Dear Friends,

As we step into 2018, may God bless you and keep you protected and in good health so that you can celebrate many more New Years. But first of all, enjoy this one and stay happy. May this New Year bring peace in your life, warmth and togetherness in your family and much prosperity. Happy New Year!

December was a socially busy month with weddings and parties galore for most of us. To get into the mood, we began the month with a Fellowship on the 6th December at Wodehouse Gymkhana. The highlight of the evening was a saxophonist who kept everyone enthralled with lovely music. On 13th December, we had Meeran Chadha Borwankar, IPS share her interesting experiences as a woman in the predominantly male bastion of police officers. We held our 50th AGM on 20th December and I feel honoured to have presided over this milestone

AGM. Members were happy to note that the leadership of the Club is well charted out for the next few years and with younger members on the ladder. On 27th December, fitness expert Nawaz Modi Singhania shared many tips and secrets for wellness, especially on issues that nag our body as we get older.

I was happy to attend the Charter Night celebrations of our very active Inner Wheel Club on 9th December. It was nice to see the men accompany their member wives for a lovely evening at the Bombay Gymkhana. 15th December was a busy Rotary day with two events. Like every year, Piyush Khaitan and the Somani family distributed mobility aid appliances at NASEOH under our Club’s aegis. The recipients, though given the short end of the stick by life, were happy to receive these appliances which help their mobility and maintain their dignity. Later that day, the Rotaract Club of Kundnani College had their Installation and the team for the year took over. This Rotaract, inactive for some time, can hopefully become as active as ever with their enthusiasm and our support. On 16th December, our Senior Citizen Committee had organised a visit to the St. Anthony’s Home for the Aged where we distributed toiletries and eats lovingly put together by Dr. Vimal and Dr. Arvind Kasbekar. Rotaractors from Lala College were also present and sang carols for the residents.

There is a very interesting Rajasthani Night Fellowship planned in January. Many of us Rajasthanis have met more than once in these past few weeks to plan for this and I am sure this evening will be remembered for a long time to come.

Cheers,Pres Rtn Manoj Jalan

From the President’s desk...

1. Erdal Sabri Ergen, the Turkish Consul General in Mumbai, has completed his tenure here and has now been posted as an Ambassador in Chad. He thanks the Rotary members for the support and encouragement received during his time in Mumbai and says that he will miss Rotary and this city. He can be reached at his official email [email protected]

2. Rajen Patel, with the Club since 1970, has been unable to come to the meetings for a long time due to ill health and has now resigned from the Club.

3. Inge Krueger, with the Club since 1994, has been unable to come to the meetings since a long time due to health issues and has now resigned from the Club.

4. Rajesh Tandon, member of the Club since 2004 has been busy travelling due to business commitments and has chosen to leave the Club.

6th Dec: Fellowship at Wodehouse Gymkhana

The first Wednesday of December beckoned us to a lovely Fellowship evening at Wodehouse Gymkhana. As always, there were great drinks, good food and to top it up, there was a live saxophonist who played songs after songs from yesteryear Hindi films and all time Western classics to which members swayed on the dance floor. December has always been a busy month with many weddings so we have many anniversaries falling in this month and of course, birthdays of members and spouses. Cakes were cut to celebrate the birthdays and anniversaries of the month. Generous contributions were given by Rotarians Raju Barwale, Tilak Mehta, Suruchi Chand, Kiran Shah, Vicky Punjabi and Anne Hansa Kejriwal. The Club is grateful to them for the same.

On 13th December we had the privilege of being addressed by Meeran Chadha Borwankar, IPS who spoke on The Disruptive Gender - My Career in Police.

Meeran has had a long and distinguished career in the IPS and has held some very important posts. As a young DCP in-charge of the Port Zone she went head-on with the port mafia and curbed pilferage and theft. She spent some years with the CBI and later was appointed the first woman Chief of the Crime Branch of Mumbai and later the first Police Commissioner of Mumbai. As Chief of Prisons, she oversaw and witnessed the hangings of Ajmal Kasab and Yakub Memon. She was appointed as Director General of Bureau of Police Research and Development with the Union Home Ministry from where she recently retired. Meeran recently released her first book, ‘Leaves of Life’, highlighting various experiences from her career and learnings from the same, aimed at young girls as her target readers.

13th Dec: Speaker Meeran Chadha Borwankar, IPS

Speaker Meeran Chadha Borwankar

Highlighting her topic, she emphasised that women were not the disruptive gender they are made out to be. They are capable, creative, productive, equal and inclusive. In fact, a study by Harvard has concluded that women are better than men in 12 out of the 16 characteristics that define a leader.

Some of the highlights of her talk were: Women have great communication skills, team building abilities, leadership capabilities are skilled at building relationships and problem solving, etc. Meeran gave several instances of her being a winner in difficult situations.

Resentment against women is a lost battle as women now occupy high posts unlike in the past. Secure men value competent leaders but insecure men consider capable and confident women as disruptive. People like Meeran Chaddha Borwankar truly epitomise women empowerment and are role models. We hope more women follow her footsteps.

The AGM, though an annual affair, was special this year as it was our Club’s 50th AGM. Chartered in 1968, our Club has come a long way since and it is our proud privilege to reach this milestone. Though few members were present, the discussions were enlivening. Many senior members came up with ideas and suggestions to improve the attendance, vibrancy and membership of the Club. At times serious and at times laden with wit, the formal part of the meeting went off smoothly. The highlight of the meeting was the nominations received for the Office Bearers for 2018-19 and the following were elected:

Fitness Guru and style icon Nawaz Modi Singhania was the speaker on 27th December. Nawaz is a certified fitness expert and deeply into wellness. She began her talk with the basics of health and fitness and then took the audience through simple exercises to counter the effects of ageing on our face.

Most of our facial muscles are not used that much, and as one grows older, they slacken and begin to sag due to under-use. The skin droops, forming pouches, bags under the eyes, wrinkles and a double chin - all signs of ageing!

Facial workouts can help you counter these signs of ageing. Without surgery, you can now slow down the ravages of time, while maintaining your youthful looks for much longer. These exercises take off a good decade from your face.

Get into all of the below described exercises gradually, stage by stage, for a count of 3, hold or freeze in the eventual position for a count of 5, and then release the exercise slowly, on a count of 3. Breathe normally throughout.

1 Eyebrow presses (to strengthen the muscles of the eyelids and reverse the droop): Place your forefingers just under the eyebrows,

27th Dec: Nawaz Modi Singhania on ‘Forever Young’

press upwards and then backwards into the skull. Hold this position while trying to shut the eyes.

2 The eyebrow lift (to get rid of furrows and lines on the forehead): Lift the eyebrows upward and open the eyes wider and wider with each count.

3 Double chin lift and jaw line tightener: Tilt the head back, lower lip covers the upper lip. Stay in this position while curling the tongue up inside the mouth, and pressing it against the upper palette, and then smile as you come back to the start position.

4 The muscles around the mouth: Advanced facial exercises work from inside the mouth. Wearing gloves, for hygiene’s sake, place the entire length of the thumbs inside your mouth, between the teeth of the upper jaw and the upper lip. Press/suck the upper lip back into the teeth so that the thumbs feel squeezed.

Do these exercises twice each, 3 - 4 times a week. Defy the laws of gravity with these exercises & enjoy the new, improved & ageless you!

Rotarians make a trip to Amritsar

The Golden Temple in Amritsar

Recently, the Tours and Travels Committee decided to organise a tour to the holy city of Amritsar. Initially, one had estimated that 15 people would join the tour. Ultimately, 22 persons lapped this interesting offer. The tour operator had arranged the bookings at the Hyatt Hotel, which is situated close to the temple. Rtn Om Degan was allocated a suite which also served as a lounge for the participants to enjoy during their off-hours.

The tour operator had arranged for two luxury buses which were to remain with the group right from the time we were picked up from the airport to the time we were dropped off at the airport on the return journey.

The party was divided into two groups, each with its own leader as per convenience of the Rotarians and their spouses (and a guest).

The first group, of which I was the leader, visited the Golden Temple during the late afternoon to evening time slot, whilst the second group, led by Rtn. Rohit Mehta visited the temple late in the evening. The second group got a chance to partake in the langar, which is prepared by volunteers from all walks of life including many from well-to-do families.

Each group stopped at the temple’s office which were kind enough to provide a guide to escort the visiting Rotary family round the vast temple premises. This was a wise decision. The complex is so huge that it took

us several hours to go through the various nooks and corners of this holy place. We also paid our obeisance to the holy Granth Sahib was being read at the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The second day was reserved for a visit to the iconic Wagah Border (see separate report).

Amritsar is famous for its culinary delights. Most of us had lunch at the adjoining mall where two restaurants were chosen — The Dhaba for the vegetarians and Sher-e-Punjab for the non-vegetarians. It goes without saying that the food was delicious and was enjoyed by one and all. The ladies decided to go on a shopping tour of Amritsar. Rtn Om Degan took a side tour to the Partition of India Exhibition which was one-of-its-kind.

We made another visit to the Golden Temple on the third day. It was worth it. A visit to Jallianwala Bagh was also arranged.

In 1578, Guru Ram Das excavated a large tank which subsequently became as Amritsar (pool of nectar of immortality), giving its name to the city around it. In due course, Harminder Sahib or The Golden Temple was built in the middle of this tank and became the supreme centre of Sikhism. It is also revered by Hindus in equal measure.

One can proudly say that all of us had a soul- satisfying experience.

naseohDistribution of Mobility Appliances

Pres Manoj Jalan with members of the Somani family at NASEOH

Like every year Rtn. Piyush Khaitan and the Somani family in association with Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town distributed mobility aids to the needy and

deserving persons with disabilities at the distribution camp held at the NASEOH premises on 15th December. Five tricycles, 2 wheelchairs, 10 calipers/crutches and 5 Jaipur prosthesis were distributed.

President Rtn Manoj Jalan, Rtn Gaurav Kapadia, Rtn Ajay Bhatnagar and Rtn Piyush Khaitan were present at the event and distributed the appliances. Mr. G. K. Somani, Mr. Sanjay Somani, Mrs. Shruti Somani and friends of the family were also present.

The Somani family's support for the last several years has helped NASEOH to fulfill one of its core objectives of providing basic mobility aids to the disabled year after year. NASEOH extended its thanks to the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town and the Somani family for their sustained support.

The military drill at Wagah Border

A visit to Wagah Border

Ever since the partition in 1947, India and Pakistan have continuously played the game of one-upmanship. Nowhere is it as evident as it is at Wagah Border, a midway point along the straight road between Amritsar and Lahore.

The lowering of the flags ceremony at the Wagah border was one of the most awaited moments in the itinerary of our tour to Amritsar.

The delegation of Rotarians, Rotary Annes and a guest left the Hyatt Hotel in Amritsar for the Wagah Border. It took almost an hour to reach the place. Here, we had to dismount and start trudging along the patchy footpath towards the Indian side of the amphitheatre. Thanks to Major Srivastav, a friend of Rtn Om Degan, we were given access to the VIP enclosure close to the iron gates

separating the two sides. It provided a bird’s eye view of the events that unfolded in front of our eyes.

As India and Pakistan celebrated their twin 70th birthdays in 2017, the frontier came alive with shouts of patriotic slogans and music to match. Pakistan has built a multi-tiered structure for the crowd that comes to watch from their end. The Indians have done even better with a half stadium that can seat 15000 people. Hats and flags are sold by the vendors to the visiting crowd and we, too, purchased some as souvenirs to take home.

At sunset, rival squads of splendidly uniformed soldiers strutted and stomped an ancient military drill known as Beating the Retreat or Changing of the Guards. Ferocious commandos with fierce glares and dangerously high kicks signalled the rivalry between the two units. Then, suddenly and in unison, the two national flags are lowered. What looked like a violent confrontation at the start ends with the opposing guardsmen shaking hands. Thereafter, the border gates on both sides roll shut for the night.

The entire function was marked by a patriotic flavour that is difficult to match. We left the venue with our hearts swollen with pride and felt proud to be Indians.

We returned to Hyatt Hotel deeply satisfied at having visited the Wagah Border and a chance to celebrate India’s 70th birthday in a memorable way.
