From the President’s desk...

It is a great privilege for me to update my Rotary family of the events and activities during the month of July. We had a hectic month in June since many of us were busy preparing for the Installation. July marks the start of the new Rotary Year and also the start of business in right earnest for the new team.

We lost two dear members of our Rotary family this month. Dr. Pratap Sapat passed away on 5th July. He was a senior member whose silent reassuring presence at the Club gave us a huge amount of confidence. We lost Dr. Badrinarayan Barwale on 24th July. A doyen of the Indian seeds and agro industry, his contribution to Rotary and the society around him is beyond the scope of imagination for most of us. May their souls rest in eternal peace.

There have been a couple of additions to our tribe. Jigisha Parikh and Jagar Thakur were inducted as members this month. Jigisha has been loaned the classification ‘Jewellery Designing’. Jagar is

Vice-President of Fariyas Hotels & Resorts and has been loaned the classification ‘Hospitality’.

On 1st July, RCBMT conducted a Blood Donation Camp at YMCA, Lamington Road. Saifee Hospital Blood Bank team and Rotaractors of Lala Lajpatrai College were present in full strength to conduct the Camp. Some of us Rotarians visited the Camp to encourage and support them. Tree plantation is being propagated not just by our Government but our RI President Ian Riseley is also encouraging each Rotarian across the world to plant a tree. The aim is to have at least, if not more, 1.2 million new trees planted across the globe every year by Rotarians. On 11th July, RCBMT organised ‘Green Guardian’ tree plantation drive at Maharashtra Nature Park, Dharavi. This 35 acre piece of greenery in the middle of the city is an oasis in the concrete jungle around it. Many Rotarians from RCBMT and Rotaractors of Lala Lajpatrai College came to plant saplings at this park. We hope that the rains and caretakers of the park nurture these saplings well and they will turn into big trees over time.

We had some interesting speakers during the month. Capt. Rishabh Kapoor, a pilot of Air India, who flew a plane into the strife-torn, dangerous skies of Yemen in 2015 to evacuate stranded civilians, mainly Indians, shared his experience of this ‘Operation Raahat’. Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat, former Chief of Naval Staff, spoke on the changed perspective of national security in the new world which is very different from the traditional security mindset that predominantly meant military might. Dr. Pradnya Saravade IPS, Addl. Director General of Police of Maharashtra belied the typical image of a police officer with her soft-spoken, calm and composed demeanour. Her talk brought to the fore the fact that a lot of work and training, physical and in terms of sensitisation, is going on behind the scenes to help improve the police and policing around us. Mr. Satish Mathur IPS, Director General of Police, Maharashtra, showed a sharp analytical mind behind his affable and jovial nature. In a talk interspersed with wit and humour, he shared events and incidents from his long career in police and the learnings from them.

For the last several months RCBMT has been working on tying up a Global Grant of US$99,000 for conducting Paediatric Heart surgeries. This GG has many international Rotary Clubs as partners and as contributors. The submission of the GG application was stuck as one of the international Clubs, which was on board earlier, seemingly had some internal problems in their Club and finally informed us in July that they are withdrawing. We reworked the application and scaled back the GG to US$92,000 to fulfil all criteria of RI and finally uploaded the application.

This summarises the month of July for us all. I look forward to your wholehearted participation in our Club’s events and activities in August.

Pres Manoj Jalan

Sad demise: Dr. Pratap Sapat

It is with great sadness that we announce the sad demise of our senior Rtn Dr. Pratap Sapat who passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at the age of 82 years. Dr. Pratap Sapat was one of the most preferred dentists in Mumbai. He had extensive dental training and experience and treated all dental problems with efficiency, dedication and precision. Dr. Pratap joined Rotary in April 1974.

He will be lovingly remembered by his friends at Rotary for his soft spoken nature. He offered his expertise time and again at several medical camps held by the Club. He was a star cricketer in his early days for the Rotary Bombay Mid-Town Club and participated in Inter-Rotary Club tournaments. He leaves behind his wife Shobha and his children, Krishna and Brinda.

Rtn. PDG Dr. Shirish Sheth fondly shares a few words: "It was a pleasure knowing Rtn Dr. Pratap Sapat, a member of Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town for 43 years. However, it is sad and shocking to have lost him from this world. A gentleman to the core, he was straightforward in all dealings and would call a spade, a spade without any hesitation. He was a fine person and a dental surgeon whose manners, etiquette and unbelievable punctuality while attending to his patients and otherwise, were well appreciated.

He attended our Rotary Club meetings with interest and participated in promoting fellowship. R/Ann Mrs. Shobha Sapat, an active member of the Inner Wheel Club of Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town, is always willing to participate and contribute. Incidentally, Pratap’s mother ’s brother, the active and vibrant Mr. Kishore Mariwala, was a member of our Club many years ago."

We lost another dear member Rtn B.R. Barwale on 24th July. Rtn Badrinarayan Barwale was a great gift from the Rotary Club of Jalna in Dist. 314 to the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town. He was someone to emulate, someone who exemplifies and someone who exhibits principles of Rotary. Indeed, he was a great Rotarian. He was quiet, and soft-spoken and had vibrant grey cells.

I recollect his promptly accepting to become an Arch Klumph Society member in Rtn Raju Barwale’s presence. His photograph will be on the 16th floor of Rotary International, One Rotary Centre, Evanston, Illinois, USA. Whenever, a significant amount of charity was required for service, Badrinathji was immediately thought of and he promptly responded; he did not have ‘no’ in his dictionary.

Badrinathji founded Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Co. Ltd. (Mahyco), in 1964.

Today it markets 200 hybrids and 35 crop species and is a doyen of thehybrid seed industry in the country. The company received the 12th World Food Prize for agricultural mastery by The World Food Prize Foundation, Iowa, USA in

1998, a prize that is often called the Nobel Prize for the agricultural industry. Through Mahyco, Badrinathji worked for elimination of hunger and poverty. Crop Science Society of America recognised him as the Father of the Seed Industry in India as he was The Star of Asia.

The Government of India, too, recognised his endeavours and achievements and conferred the prestigious PadmaBhushan Award for his distinguished service in the field of trade and economic activity in 2001. Rtn B.R. Barwale also received an Honorary Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) from Tamil Nadu Agricultural Universityand an Honorary Doctorate in Literature from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.

Rtn B.R. Barwale founded several institutions to help the community in Jalna, Maharashtra. He founded the Badrinarayan Barwale College and Golden Jubilee School. Based on and linked with Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai,Dr. Barwale established the world-class Shri Ganapati Netralaya, a state-of-the-art eye hospital with 141 beds andnine operating theatres with the capacity to perform 25,000 surgeries annually in Jalna, Aurangabad. The hospitalis recognised by the Government of India.

His affectionate wife R/Ann Gomtidevi and their son Rtn. Raju have been big supporters and instrumental in his mighty success. He has given Rtn. Raju Barwale to our Club, who I am sure will make his presence felt and fill the huge gap.

'Green Guardian' - The Tree Plantation Drive

The Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town participated in a Tree Plantation Drive on 11th July. Members of RCBMT and of Rotaract Club of Lala Lajpatrai College visited Maharashtra Nature Park (MNP) in Dharavi to plant trees. MNP is a lush green patch of land of about 40 acres between Dharavi and Bandra-Kurla Complex and provides the much needed green lung to the city.

MNP has trees that date back to many years ago as well as saplings, planted over the last few years, growing into trees. It was a unique experience for all of us to actually dig a pit, plant a sapling, move

some soil over it and then water the plant. There is an instant feeling of bonding with that plant and one wants to ensure that it survives to grow into a huge tree which can provide a reason to the many species of birds that abound MNP to visit there every season.

President Manoj Jalan, IPP Sucharita Hegde, Rtn Deepak Mehta, Rtn Rajendra Mane, PP Ashok Sharma, PP Anil Ambo and Devansh Jalan (son of Manoj Jalan) along with Rotaractors from Lala Lajpatrai College visited MNP and planted saplings.

We had the pleasure of being addressed by Retd Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat, PVSM, AVSM, former Chief of Naval Staff of India, who had a brilliant career in the Indian Navy, marked with many milestones

The talk was indeed an eye opener about National Security and the many dimensions that it encompasses.

Some highlights of what Admiral Bhagwat mentioned :

- A major issue is "Conflicts over Water in South Asia" as the coastal security along with the border being secured by the armed forces is just as critical as internal security. Citizens need to feel safe and protected.

- Wars are not just a conflict between nations but also "Food Wars" as Henry Kissinger talked about. A nation needs to be self-sufficient in food which India used to be but unfortunately no longer is – edible oil and oil seeds are indeed a great example of how India used to be self-sufficient .

Admiral Bhagwat complimented Dr. Verghese Kurien on the White Revolution – as we all know of the success by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation and the Amul brand.

- National Security also implies being secure from water and food contamination.

- While information technology has relocated the world order by connecting and linking people the world over, the state of the economy has a lot to achieve as in India we unfortunately see growing poverty and destitution in villages.

- Renewable sources of energy is another important issue.

- The global media has concealed more than they revealed on various activities by mafia groups which means that issues are deeper than what the layman understands.

- Western banking systems could be declared insolvent but are protected and kept solvent due to vested interests. Wars are also created by certain vested interests like the repeated bombing in Afghanistan.

- India's defence budgets need to be better utilized — Russia is a great example of a well organized military force with lesser spends than India. China is also reducing its military forces but increasing naval security.

While India is a democracy, religion is being used to create divisive politics with politics of hate. This only hampers the progress of a nation like India

To conclude: "Without Unity there can be no National Security". - Rtn Prasanna Bhagat

Dr. Pradnya Saravade

Dr. Pradnya Saravade (IPS), Additional Director General of Police, Maharashtra joined the Indian Police Service in 1989. She is the fourth woman IPS officer in Maharashtra. In her career of 28 years, she has held many important posts with Maharashtra and Mumbai Police, CBI and SEBI.

Dr. Saravade spoke on ‘Policing in Maharashtra’. She gave a brief overview on policing and then turned the talk into an interactive Q&A session, saying that the concerns and questions of the people are the source of feedback for officers at her level. The diverse questions posed by our members were eloquently answered with ease and humour. Had time not been a limitation, the meeting would have continued well past the closing hour.

She admitted frankly the limitations the police force has to grapple with, be it the lengthy court trials or decisions based on prioritising between complaints involving a law and order situation vis-a-vis other complaints of social and environmental nature like a fight within a household, sound pollution, encroachment of public spaces, etc. Addressing our Rotarians who are predominantly part of diverse businesses, she said problems pertaining to white collar crime are handled by the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police, a special department set up for this very purpose. After the horrific Mumbai attacks, a special 'Force One' has been set up to tackle terrorism and other such extreme situations in the fastest possible response time. ‘Force One’ has come a long way since then and is so well trained that even the

central paramilitary forces come to train with them.

Training and sensitisation of police force is an ongoing and evolutionary process and despite the never ending complaints that the public may have towards the Police, they are doing an extremely effective job in trying situations with limited manpower and infrastructure. The police deserve our accolades and appreciation as well and not just brickbats. This is extremely heartening to hear and be proud of. More power to our Mumbai Police.

PP Atul Premnarayen introduced Director General of Police, Maharashtra, Satish Mathur as a very good human being and a capable and well respected police officer.

Mr. Mathur joined the IPS in 1981 and was the first IPS officer to undergo training by National Security Guard. He is also an avid golf player.

A soft-spoken and pleasant personality, Mr. Mathur went down memory lane, sharing events and experiences from his 36-year journey as a police officer with a pinch of humour.

In 1983, he was involved with the execution of JNPT, then known as the Nhava Sheva Port. The port was planned by the Japanese and was to be based in Nhava and Sheva areas of Raigad district, areas that had the impression of being notorious and turbulent in those days. Of course, over time, both JNPT and Navi Mumbai have developed phenomenally.

He shared events such as chasing the dreaded terrorist Jinda from Punjab and events leading up to the assassination of former Army Chief General A. K. Vaidya. The learning from that experience he said was that one cannot be presumptuous and leave anything to chance, especially when it concerns security and safety. Mr. Mathur went on to say that the 1993 bomb blast changed the city of Mumbai. He also praised our country’s judiciary system. During Sanjay Dutt's trial and subsequent conviction, the department was able to convince the courts that possession does not necessarily mean physical possession alone.

While he was Joint Commissioner of Police - Traffic of Mumbai, he took the revolutionary measure of

removing the Haji Ali roundabout and insisted on making the Bandra-Worli Sea Link as a four lane bridge. He said he raised his objections regarding the sea link ending in a T Junction at Worli. He started the installation of CCTV cameras and now there are over 5500 cameras across the city, accessed by police control room 24/7 for surveillance and maintaining law and order.

"As a society we need to foresee problems and will have to think forward to implement solutions before it’s too late. That’s the only way we can develop faster as a country," said Mathur.

The Maharashtra Police has come out with many services on the mobile app and website for the convenience of civilians. They also have facility of voluntary work and community policing for civilians. Mathur also mentioned that the police department is coming out with a new app specifically for women travelling in trains which has a panic button that is connected to the control room. He was proud to acknowledge the accomplishment of the Force One team created after 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai. This commando force based in Goregaon, has become a force to reckon with. They have even started to train CRPF teams for Kashmir operations.

He concluded by saying that he will put his best efforts to make the police force well trained and well equipped to serve the city and state better. A lively Q&A followed the talk and the session ended with formal vote of thanks by PP Ajit Kamlani.

Mother, I was born here,to my heart, mother, you’re very dear.

When you were finally free, everyone’s face was filled with glee.

Mother, you made sure I had all I need, but some took more, because of their greed.

You were always alert for my security, but everywhere I see is impurity.

Mother you treated all of us as equal, but now some aren’t even looked at as people.

You taught us to speak our hearts out,but why aren’t we heard, even when we shout?

Mother you told us to be open minded, but there are so many who by wrong are blinded.

You did what was right all the time, but mother, people still do commit crimes.

Mother tell me why?Why are people left to die?

Mother tell me why?Are we not given the wings,

yet expected to fly?Mother tell me why?

No one is even ready to try?Mother tell me why?

Why did people betray you?Why didn’t they say what was true?

Mother, when are things going to be,as you wanted to see?

Well, mother only you can answer those questions,

But Dear mother, you need not fear,

mother your other children and I are here, mother change is near.

So what if the others could not, mother we will do what you taught.

I love you mother even after what others made of you,I promise mother not to be like them too.

Mother I’ll always listen to what you saymother I’ll do it no other way.

Mother I’ll be the best that I can bealong with your children who are with me.

Independence Day is not only about the good. It’s the good, the bad and everything else in between.

I love my country, I love India. This nation has given me everything. But it’s not perfect.

We have come a long way, we’ve worked very hard to get where we are today. But, we need to work harder. We need to move with the times. We need to open our

eyes to the truth and see what’s happening around us, we need to question things. We need to segregate

culture from regression. We need to accept that gender inequality, racism, and classism is still present in

society. We need to be the best we can.

We need to give our best.
