Direct Instruction Today, we’ll be reading more than one informational text on a shared topic. We’ll think about the
information we find in each text and in both.
Distribute copies of the first informational text, “The Biggest Whales.” Have students read aloud the title and tell what question the author, Suzanne Weeks, is probably going to answer in the text. Encourage varied questions, such as “What are the biggest whales?” “How big are they?” “Why are they so big?” Then, tell students to read the text silently to see whether any of their questions are answered.
After reading, prompt students to think about the answers that the author provides and the text structure and visual information. Possible prompts:
Look again at the first paragraph. In which sentence does the author answer the question, “What are whales?” (in the first sentence, “Whales are mammals of the world’s oceans.”) What does the last sentence of that paragraph get us ready to learn about? (the topic of the text, gigantic whales)
The topic of the text is shown in the title, “The Biggest Whales.” What does the author tell us about that topic in the second paragraph? (Sperm whales are the biggest of the toothed whales. They eat fish and other sea animals. Males can grow to be 60 feet long.)
In Paragraph 3, what does the author tell us about the topic of the text? (The biggest of the baleen whales is the blue whale. It grows to an enormous size eating tons of tiny animals that it filters through its baleen. A blue whale is the biggest animal that has ever lived. It can be 100 feet long and weigh nearly 200 tons. )
What added information can you find in the illustrations and captions? (how the sperm whale and blue whale compare in size)
DescriptionThis lesson is designed to help students understand that different texts on similar topics may complement each other and that answers to questions can be put together from more than one source. Comparing and contrasting information in texts and in additional text features, such as captioned pictures and sidebars with illustrations, are required for doing research on a topic.
TEACHER TIPS
Preview the texts to determine if your students are likely to need support while reading them. You may prefer to do a first-read together, reading aloud while students follow along.
During discussions, remind students to listen to others, take turns, and speak in complete sentences. Some students may benefit from targeted oral language support to better understand and apply this concept. See the Adaptations section for suggestions.

Copy a page from a math, science, history, or geography text. Challenge students to locate as many learned prefixes as they can on the page. Then, spend time discussing findings as a class.

Latin PrefixesLatin prefixes are word parts that come at the beginning of the word and change the meaning, and occasionally the form, of a base word. The ability to recognize Latin prefixes helps students understand the structure and meaning of words (prefix, root/base word, suffix), allows students to develop word identification strategies for multisyllabic words, and serves as a foundation for understanding the most common spelling rules.
Teach or Review As necessary, teach or review the definition of a prefix. Show students how to break down words with prefixes by displaying example words (e.g., return) and having them circle the prefix, underline the rest of the word and read it, and then read the whole word.
Listening Lab Say words that contain prefixes aloud. Ask students to repeat the words first; then, have them say or write only the prefix that is contained in the word. Provide visual references (such as prefix words cards) as necessary.
Super Sort Write a number of words that include Latin prefixes on cards (or dictate them to students). Have students sort the words by prefix and then read each word. If necessary, provide a limited number of prefixes at a time.
Brainstorm Write a newly learned prefix (e.g., pre-) in the middle of a circle. Ask students to generate as many words as they can that contain the prefix (e.g., preview, preheat); add those words to the outside of the circle. Then, assign students to their own prefixes and have them repeat the exercise. Provide resource materials as needed.
Beat the Clock Provide students with word cards that contain a variety of prefixes (e.g, in-, mis-) and base words (e.g, take, lead). Challenge them to combine the prefixes and base words to create and record as many real words as possible in a set amount of time.

Many children want a pet. Cats and dogs are great pets.
Other animals can make fine pets too. One animal that is
friendly and likes to play is a budgie. A budgie is also called
a parakeet. It is a small, lively bird. Wild budgies live in flocks
in Australia. A pet budgie comes from a pet store. But like all
budgies, it doesn’t feel happy alone. It wants to be with its
human family.
A budgie needs proper food and care. Its cage should
have a wooden bar for a perch. A swing can give a budgie
something to do in its cage. But a budgie also needs to
fly freely every day. With training, a budgie will perch on a
finger. Many people choose budgies as pets because these
birds can copy the sounds of a human voice. With training,
a budgie can learn to talk!

I. Warm-up: Introduction to Theme (approximately 3-4 minutes) To begin, use a warm-up activity to briefly introduce the topic or theme that the words relate to and explicitly connect to student background knowledge. Choose one of the following options or create your own warm-up
A. CHARADES
• Tell students to watch carefully while you do an action related to today’s lesson. Choose an action that introduces the words/phrases you plan to teach. For example, to introduce the vocabulary from the Tools Flashcard set, pretend to build something.
• Explain that they will each tell a neighbor what they think you’re doing, and model how to construct a relevant phrase (e.g., he’s cooking, she’s running).
• Direct students to “turn and whisper” to a neighbor what they think you’re doing, modeling an example again if necessary.
• When everyone has whispered to a neighbor, reveal what you were acting out and the topic or theme of today’s lesson.
B. CLUES
• Tell students to listen carefully while you give you some clues about today’s lesson.
• Give clues about something that introduces the words/phrases you plan to teach. For example to introduce the Ocean Animals Flashcards, I’m thinking of a very big body of water with sand and waves. Many plants and animals live in it. Many people go there to swim or go fishing. What am I thinking of?
DescriptionThis resource is designed to help guide teachers as they introduce students to key vocabulary. In particular, this resource is designed to benefit students with limited vocabulary knowledge, especially English language learners (ELLs), by providing explicit word meaning instruction and opportunities to use new vocabulary in conversation. Meaningful interaction with new language improves both word learning and reading comprehension. The routine consists of four steps: a warm-up, direct instruction, an expressive turn-and-talk activity, and reinforcement.
PLANNING TIPS
This resource provides a basic routine for teaching vocabulary along with several types of interactive and expressive activities. You may also substitute your own activities for any part of this routine. Solid vocabulary instruction relies on meaningful student interaction, so this suggested routine is most effective when delivered to more than one student at a time. Choose a set of four to six words or phrases to teach in a single session. As a general rule, choose vocabulary items that relate to a common topic or theme.
MATERIALS
Create a set of picture-word flashcards for the target vocabulary you will teach, one for each word or phrase. Several thematic picture-word flashcard sets are available on the Support for Instruction page of the Core5 Resources Hub, accessible from the Core5 section of the Resources tab in myLexia. The octopus is unusual: It has no bones, eight arms, a huge
head, and a mouth like a parrot’s beak. It can change colors,
squirt poison, and lift four times its own weight. And, scientists
are learning, it seems to be smart!
Here are some behaviors that scientists know about:
• They’ve filmed small octopuses in the ocean carrying two halves of a coconut shell. When the octopus is in danger, it darts inside one half and pulls the other half over itself.
• Sometimes in the morning, aquarium workers would find fish missing from a tank. Then they’d see watery trails on the floor. They realized that octopuses were getting out of their tanks at night. They were crawling to the fish tanks, eating fish, and returning to their tanks.
• Curious octopuses are interested in toys dropped into their tanks. Scientists at the Lorenz Institute note that octopuses become attached to certain toys. They carry them around like a child with a stuffed animal.
• A giant Pacific octopus was being studied at the Seattle Aquarium. She was given a glass jar with food inside. She figured out how to screw off the top to get to the food all by herself.

If you listen to the news these
days, you know that everybody
is concerned that kids aren’t
eating enough nutritious food. If
any of these concerned citizens
ever visited our cafeteria at
lunch time, they might worry
even more! Yes, the daily hot
lunch features healthy food, but
the vegetables taste terrible.
They’re either overcooked frozen
vegetables, or if they’re in salads,
they are not very fresh. And then
what happens? Kids leave the
vegetables untouched. Who
wants to eat mushy broccoli
or wilted lettuce? So the
school spends money
on food that gets thrown away,
and we kids don’t get a complete,
nutritious meal. Everybody loses.
But there’s a way for everyone
to win: Our school could set
up a farm-to-school program.
Over 2,000 schools all across
the country already have farm-
to-school programs that are
running successfully. Here’s how
it works: The school sets up an
arrangement with local farmers,
who sell certain fresh fruits
and vegetables to the school
every few days. Farm-to-school
programs also include classroom
visits from farmers, who help kids
understand what’s involved in
farming, and field trips for kids
to see real farms firsthand.

Direct Instruction Today we’ll be reading to learn information. When we want to find out about a true topic, we can read more than one book or other text on it. We can ask ourselves questions about what the author tells us and think about the answers we find.
Cut out the six pages of the first informational text, “Balancing.” Show students one page at a time, until all six pages are displayed. For each page, read aloud the text, and ask questions to prompt discussion about the text and the illustration, as shown below.
Read aloud page 1, the title page. Then ask:
What is the title? (Balancing)
What did Mason Kolley do? (wrote the words and drew the pictures)
What does the picture show? Have students briefly tell what they know about balancing on a beam.
What do you think the book will tell about? Encourage varied predictions.
Read aloud page 2. Then ask:
Read the first sentence with me. Remember we read the words in this order, starting at the top and going this direction.
Show where to begin and left to right sequence and then read aloud together.
How does the picture help you understand what steady means? (The child is balancing on one foot and is not wobbling.)
Read the second sentence with me. Read aloud together. What do you see that matches that sentence? (The child’s body is balanced and is not tipping to the side or falling.)
DescriptionSupplemental Lexia Lessons can be used for whole class, small group or individualized instruction to extend learning and enhance student skill development. This lesson is designed to help students recognize that the words and pictures go together in an illustrated text, and that both provide reasons and other details supporting the author’s main points. The lesson presents two texts on the same informational topic, and students look for similarities and differences in them.
Teacher Tips
Students are introduced to each text in this lesson by listening as you read it aloud. Preview the texts to see whether students will be able to reread with you, echo-read, or read selected words independently. You may also want to pre-introduce necessary vocabulary, such as balance and weight.

What are Lexia Skill Builders?Lexia Skill Builders are paper-based practice materials created for students to build automaticity, promote generalization, and expand expressive language. After completing an activity in the Core5® online program, students are encouraged to work on a corresponding set of Lexia Skill Builders, either independently or with a partner.
Why are Lexia Skill Builders important?Core5 provides teachers with actionable data, and Lexia Skill Builders are a next step in that action plan. This resource is designed to give students the opportunity to engage with the material in ways that are not possible online—drawing, writing, oral expression, and peer collaboration. Many questions and tasks are open-ended, requiring students to generate a written response that reinforces and extends the online learning. At the same time, students are developing writing skills, such as constructing sentences, using precise language, and supporting analysis with evidence from the text. Each page includes a starred extension activity that promotes peer collaboration and higher-order thinking.

Core5® Home ActivitiesReading Skills ListUse your child’s Core5 level as a guide and build reading skills through these at home activities!
Level 1Play games to practice rhyming and categorizing! Say a word, like log, and see if your child can come up with words that rhyme, like dog and hog. Or, give him a category, such as animals, and see how many he can think of.
Level 2Play games to build sound awareness and vocabulary as you look for objects around you. Say a sound, like /m/, and see if your child can find something that starts with that sound. Or, describe an object (I see a small, soft toy.) and see if she can guess what it is!
Level 3Continue to build sound awareness and vocabulary as you play at home. Count the sounds of objects around you (/d/-/i/-/sh/ has 3 sounds!), look for common sight words in books, and describe objects with interesting adjectives, like “I want an enormous cupcake!”
Level 4Go on a sound treasure hunt. Pick a sound, like /p/, and see how many things your child can find that begin or end with that sound. Afterwards, have him describe these objects with adjectives, like “I found a shiny and flat pan!”
Level 5
Read together! Find consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, like lap and hat, and common sight words, like said and come, for her to try reading on her own. If she gets stuck on a CVC word, help by sounding it out, one sound at a time. When you finish reading, have your child tell you what the story was about!
Level 6Practice spelling consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, like hop and run. Then, have your child tell you how the words are related (Hop and run are both actions!) or have him make a sentence with the words (It is fun to hop and run!).
Level 7Write silly sentences together using new words and patterns. Try using word families, like -ack, and contractions (Don’t pack a tack with my snack!). Have her read them back to you. Choose the best ones to act out or illustrate!
Level 8Share notes with each other so that your child can practice reading and writing compound words (pancake) and words with vowel teams (boat, treat). Leave messages for him throughout the day, like “Pack the sunscreen!” or “Sweet dreams!”
Level 9Practice as you cook! Choose a recipe and read it together. Have your child write and categorize the ingredients (dairy, grains, fruit). When you are done, have her tell someone else the steps of the recipe using sequence words, like first, then, and finally.

Art Studio
Figurative language can be tricky for some kids. Take similes and metaphors. Authors make these comparisons between two things to help readers form pictures in their minds.
My room is a pigsty.
You are my sunshine.
My brain is a sponge.
He’s as sly as a fox.
It’s as light as air.
She slept like a log.
Have your reader illustrate these examples, and talk about why an author might use them. Look for more examples of figurative language the next time you read together.
Photo Booth
Support your reader’s growing understanding of story structure with this fun photo-taking activity. Talk about a familiar story, taking time to discuss these key elements:
setting – where/when the story happens
characters – people or animals in the story
problem – what motivates the characters
major events – what happens in the story
solution – how the problem is fixed
Have kids create their own story by taking photos to show the setting, characters, and major events. Then, look at the pictures together, and listen as they tell the story.
For an extra challenge, urge them to write it down to make a mini book!
Work with your reader to learn the irregular plural forms of nouns like person/people, foot/feet, tooth/teeth, child/children, mouse/mice, and wolf/wolves. Support this skill by making pairs of word cards together.
Then, shuffle the cards, and play Go Fish! Urge kids to use each word in a sentence after collecting a related pair. If this game is a hit, try it with more plural nouns or with these irregular past tense verbs:

a book, and try to find at least one word that ends with each of
these suffixes: -ous, -ive, -tion, -ize, -al, and
-ness.
Read a new book, and write a review. Describe what you liked and what you
didn't like. Share your review with a friend or
family member.
Write at least one word for each of these
Latin roots: ject (to throw), port (to carry), tact (to touch), rupt (to break), form (to make), and vis (to see). Use a

In a book you’re reading, find five words you don't know. Try to figure out the meaning by looking for clues in the words around it.

Find a poem you like, and practice reading it aloud. Then, create a beat to go with it. (Try tapping a pencil on a
table!) Record yourself reading the poem in rhythm to the beat.
Read two books by the same author. Draw a

Supporting Families with Remote LearningThis fall, you and your students may be logging into a virtual classroom or navigating a mix of face-to-face and online learning. Here are some ways that you can help families support their readers all year long.
Communicate Clearly and Concisely Families are likely receiving information from many different sources as they work to support their children this school year. As much as possible, try to streamline communication while also providing families with various options and modalities for learning. Consider posting resources in one place so families can easily access important information when they need it. The following are some suggested Lexia resources for families:
• Families can visit the Remote Learning Center for at-home resources and materials, including pre-recorded webinars. Access to Technical Support and the Help Center is also linked on the page.
• Guidance for Using Lexia Programs at Home during extended school closures is available in multiple languages.
• Home Use Letters provide more specific information about logging in to Lexia programs.
• The Lexia Help Center offers self-serve resources with information about our programs and family support. The Help Center can also connect families to the Lexia Support team if they need additional help.
Provide Meaningful Learning OpportunitiesKeep in mind the challenges of supporting school-like learning in a home setting. Look for meaningful experiences for students to build literacy in a fun, hands-on way that also provides a break from screen time. Lexia provides At-Home resources to support this learning, such as the Lexia Read @ Home newsletters. These newsletters include hands-on activity ideas to promote literacy development at home with fun games and projects can be completed with items that families may already have.
Consider Flexible Solutions and ResourcesWhen planning for remote learning, choose flexible programs and resources to support families with varying degrees of access to devices and internet connectivity. Even if households have one device available, they may not have multiple devices available for children to use simultaneously.
Lexia can support this in the following ways:
• When students are able to access Lexia online from home, use the weekly recommended goal to guide program use but be flexible with how families schedule this time. A weekly target of 60 minutes, for example, could be met by completing four 15-minute sessions or two 30-minute sessions depending on a student’s family schedule.
• Lexia offers printable materials, such as Lexia Skill Builders, that reinforce and enhance literacy skills. Consider ways to share these printed materials with families when access to devices and internet connectivity are limited.
Celebrate SuccessDuring times of remote learning, it may be more important than ever to celebrate success. These celebrations — sending a special email, recognizing a student’s accomplishment during a virtual class meeting, or mailing written letters of encouragement — may look a little different than ones in a typical classroom but are all ways to acknowledge progress and motivate students. Lexia Achievement Certificates can be used to recognize success and strengthen school-to-home connections.

Summer Reading TipsSupporting Literacy at Home
Looking for ways to help families support their readers at home this summer? Follow these tips to reinforce school-year learning.
Encourage use of Core5 at homeIf your students did not use Core5 at home during the school year but you think they’d benefit from continuing to work online this summer, the Core5 Home Use Letter explains to families how to log in and support their reader at home. Available in English, Arabic, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
Suggest practicing learned skillsLexia’s instructional support resources can be used to reinforce and build literacy skills from home. Share these resources based on your students’ current Core5 level.
• Lexia Skill Builders allow students to apply and generalize online learning with engaging tasks that promote written expression. This student resource is available in digital and printable formats. Consider sharing Skill Builders from previously completed levels as a way to review skills that were covered during the school year.
• Phonics knowledge is important for developing accurate and automatic word identification skills. Share the Lexia Decodable Readers to give your students additional opportunities to apply and practice foundational reading skills.
• Being able to read high-frequency words automatically is integral to fluent reading. Share the Core5 Sight Word Flashcards with families to practice over the summer.
• Support students in recognizing and understanding meaningful parts of multisyllabic words, particularly those derived from Latin and Greek, by sharing Structural Analysis Flashcards to boost their vocabulary and comprehension this summer.
Promote literacy building activitiesLexia offers Read @ Home newsletters with hands-on activity ideas to promote literacy development at home. With options for all levels, foundational through adolescent readers, these fun games and projects can be completed with items that families already have at home.
You can also encourage your students to try the Lexia Summer Reading Bingo Challenge. With bingo boards for every grade level, these fun activities can help boost literacy skills all summer long.
Celebrate student successYour students make progress toward their reading goals every time they log in to Core5. As you wrap up the school year, be sure to acknowledge these efforts and share the celebration with families. Achievement certificates are available in several languages to mark summer reading accomplishments. Or, use the Core5 Stickers in your print or digital communication with students over the summer.
