LANGA
PROBLEM?
PROBLEMS
Rapidly increasing population size
Lack of space to build new houses
Vegetable patches are being converted into land for residential purposes
Due to lack of wealth, food is not easily afforded
Vegetable gardens are constantly being vandalized
POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES?
POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES
Reduction in arable land may result in overuse of remaining land
Reduction in vegetable gardens will result in less food being produced within Langa
Overuse may result in loss of core minerals (which can not be replenished)
POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES
Runoff from pollution and litter will pollute the existing water sources, resulting in less drinking and farming water(It may also cause diseases such as cholera)
Once the effects of land misuse have occurred, the land will effectively become useless for agricultural purposes
This will result in a lack of food for a large number of people in the community
SOLUTIONS?
SOLUTIONS
Use land management techniques to manage farming procedures and natural resources
The Honeycomb Project
LAND MANAGEMENT
Allocate certain farming zones
Change to a different farming zone after each harvest in order to allow the soil to recover.
Monitor the conditions of each zone
Establish watering systems that are able to operate when needed and save waterwhen not needed

HP
Vegetables can be farmed in a greenhouse to provide food for people
We estimate that 1 unit will be able to feed between 3 to 5 families
A unit will be able to produce fish and vegetables
Our self-sustaining unit will allow more land to be used for houses
Families can sell excess food in order to buy other foods in order to have a balanced diet

FINANCESHouseholds that do grow their
own food, spend on average R350 per month on food purchases
Each family can save R300 per month if they grow their own food
We estimated that our unit can provide food for 3-5 families. This means that our unit can save approximately R1200 per month.
Which is approximately R14400 per year.
HP
Households that don’t grow their own food, spend on average R650
per month on food purchases
Therefore, after 3 years, the unit will have saved just under R45000, which is how much it cost to build the unit.
SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?
