In a street filled with stereotypical beer bars,

its refreshing to come across Monsoon Cafe

and Restaurant, a sleek and stylish bistro.

Although located in the heart of the city, it feels

more like a place to eat and drink at a casual

beach resort - the perfect place for those moments

when you want to go out for a meal and really

don’t fancy either a pub or a snazzy restaurant.

Just a short walk from the Nana BTS station,

Monsoon is popular with expats, tourists and

locals. If you’re going with a group or dining

alone, there’s something here for everyone.

The scene is vibrant, relaxed and fun.

In front, there is a terraced area with mod-

ern patio furniture, fringed by palm trees

and vibrant orange sun umbrellas. It is ideal

for al fresco dining and people watching. A

sliding glass door separates the indoor seat-

ing area, a room with dark wood tables and

chairs contrasted by orange cushions and

burgundy tablecloths and individual choco-

late place mats.

When the restaurant opened four years

ago, the owners brought in a consultant

American Chef to put together a menu

and train the local staff. Due to the multi

ethnic community on this part of Sukhumvit

Road, he created an eclectic menu – which

has recently been updated – offering European,

Pasta, Burgers, Mexican and Thai dishes. There

is a partially open kitchen so it’s possible to see

how the food is being prepared – there are no

hidden kitchen secrets at Monsoon.

Santa Fe Nachos, a dish of crispy corn

tortilla chips smothered with green chill,

cheddar cheese, refried beans, sour

cream and salsa is a signature item. The

dish dates back to 1943 when the wives of ten

to twelve U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Duncan,

Texas were in nearby Piedras Negras, Mexico

on a shopping trip. They arrived arrived at the

restaurant of Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Anaya after it had

closed for the day. Nacho Anaya invented a new

snack for them with what little he had available

in the kitchen: tortillas and cheese. Anaya cut the

tortillas into triangles, added shredded cheddar

cheese, quickly heated them and then added

sliced jalapeño peppers. From this emergency

improvisation Nachos have become a fixed item

on the world’s Tex-Mex menus.

The Bacon Swiss Burger is also noteworthy. Served open with a

large beef patty topped with melted cheese and crispy bacon and

tomato and lettuce on the other half of the bun, it is accompa-

nied by a mountain of curly fries and a small bowl of coleslaw.

What actually defines a Bacon Swiss Burger and its precise origins remains

unclear. One school of though is that in an attempt to serve a premium

burger, a fast food chain used Swiss cheese and topped it with crispy bacon.

It has now become a generic name for a premium burger even if the cheese

isn’t Swiss

The dish that most caught my attention was the Seafood paella,

short grain rice baked with saffron, white wine, lobster, shrimp,

squid, mussels, chorizo sausage, sweet pepper, onions, garlic and

peas. The dish is synonymous with Spanish cuisine. The secret to a good

paella is to use short grain rice as it easily absorbs liquid. During the cooking

process, there is absolutely no stirring. The test of a well-cooked paella is the

brown crispy layer that forms on the bottom of the pan – a highly prized

delicacy.

The final dish Fajitas which by definition is any grilled meat served with a

stack of tortillas for wrapping the meat and other ingredients. At at Mon-

soon the meat choices include pork, chicken shrimp or Australian beef,

served on a classic sizzling hotplate. On a separate white square plate there

is refried beans, Mexican rice, sour cream and tomato salsa served in a corn

ship bowl. Customers take a tortilla and wrap it around the ingredients, that

they prefer.

Monsoon also has a wide selection of authentic tasting Thai dishes and a

specials menu that changes every three days.

Good food, affordable prices and a relaxed an casual atmosphere are the

hallmarks of Monsoon.

PERSONALITYOF THE MONTH

After a gap of two years, we caught up with David Bell, Manager of Charley Brown’s

Mexicana, for an update on what’s happening in his restaurant/bar and on one of the

most popular hospitality streets in Bangkok.

“Our Margarita Madness on Tuesday is still very popular,” David tells us with a smile.

“It is always good to book to avoid disappointment. The latest addition to our drinks list is

our homemade sangria which we make fresh daily. As our neighbour Cheap Charlie’s is closed

for business on Sundays, we don’t want his customers to go thirsty, so we offer low prices on

beer, 70 baht, and wine by the glass, 100 baht. They can still look at where Charlie’s was located,

but now have the advantage of a bathroom and wait staff.”

“Bangkok is attracting a whole new set of tourists,” he continues. “We have noticed a

big increase in guests from Japan, Korea and Russia. The only problem we have encountered

is communicating what’s on our menu properly. Too many times we find people simply choose

the well-known dishes – nachos and tacos – and never try any of the more interesting ones. To

combat this, we designed a digital menu which we give to guests who may not know Mexican

food well. It contains photos of each dish and symbols to denote ingredients. It’s very easy to

use and we have people requesting it on a regular basis.

“There seems to be a fairly even split between shredded chicken or beef as the most

popular taco filling. Personally I prefer the beef, it’s imported from Australia and has

a great flavour. Whatever a guest decides, I recommend our signature ‘Double Decker’. We

coat a soft, flour tortilla with our refried beans and then wrap it around a crispy, corn taco shell

stuffed with meat, cheese, salad and Pico de Gallo. It’s not just delicious; it’s practical as it

doesn’t fall apart in your hand while eating it.

“We serve more of the original lime flavoured Margarita than any other,” he says, but

the passion fruit, a refreshing blend of sweet and sour, is addictive. For the past year

we have been pouring the popular tequila, Patron XO. Among other things, it makes a

great coffee/tequila shot. We have just introduced chili beer which is bottled in Mexico with a

Serrano chilli inside. The first mouthfuls are strangely refreshing. Then the chilli kicks in – and I

do mean kick! I’d say about 90% of our guests enjoy it and the remaining 10% need a water

to cool things down!

“Our beer can collection currently has 284 cans on display including some very rare

ones,” he says. “We will be renovating upstairs in the near future so we will have even

more wall space to expand the collection.

“Soi 11 is booming but not entirely in a positive direction,” he concludes. “Bed Sup-

perclub’s closing was a sad loss for the soi and the increase in the numbers of beer

vans has meant a worsening traffic problems. On the positive side, there are new hotels

and condos being built and that means lots more people to love our food and our margaritas!

The running of The Melbourne Cup is said to be the day Austra-lia comes to a standstill. The Australian-New Zealand Women’s Group organise a charity lunch for Bangkok’s desperate house-wives to put on their glad rag and get together to watch this amazing race.

To celebrate Universal Children’s Day enjoy the fun of the fair, entertainment, music and food, plenty of rides and games and performances to keep the family entertained for the whole day.

The Northern Irish trio of Alex Trimble, Kevin Baird and Sam Halliday quickly caught the attention of indie kids the world over with their debut album, Tourist History (2010), which contained bouncy and melodic tunes like “What You Know” and “Something Good Can Work.”

Enjoy year-end 2013 festive season with your loved ones at the spectacular “Romantique Sensation Night with Richard Clayder-man” concert presented by Universal Music (Thailand) Ltd. and Blackberry.

52 boats with 100s of oarsmen dressed in Ayutthaya-styled uni-forms partake in the celebration of the King’s 85th birthday. The Chao Phraya River will play host to this ancient tradition that will start at Rama VII Bridge before ending at Wat Arun.

Possibly Thailand’s most beautiful festival. It held on the full moon night of the eleventh month. Krathongs are made from a slide of a banana trunk, decorate with flowers, incense and a candle stick. Light the candle, float your krathong, make a wish and all your problems will flow down the river.
