Is our dam leaking? For those who have no been to Baroon Pocket Dam for some time you will not have noticed that the water levels have fallen to quite a low level. The present official level of the dam is just 57%, after the recent rain.

Photos below show the same area, one when water level was higher and the main photo shows the water level today.

Water has been being pumped of recent times to supply Brisbane water users. At the same time the Somerset dam is over 100% and the Wiven-hoe Dam is at 79%. Both the latter dams have dual purposes, water supply and flood mitigation for both Ipswich and Brisbane.

Rainfall in both those catchments occurs mainly during the summer months.

It is surprising that the Baroon Pock-et Dam water level is so low coming towards the end of the wet season.

School is back this week

With students returning to school this week police have urged mo-torists, including parents drop-ping their students to school to obey road rules, especially around schools.

Drivers not only need to take extra caution with obeying speed limits around schools, parents need to obey parking restrictions in and around their school because cars parked in appropriate locations re-stricts vision of student pedestrians.

It is important to remember that many of the younger children are excited and may not always act in a predictable manner thus the onus is on drivers to take that extra care to reduce the possibility of a tragic event.

Police have confirmed that in the safe interests of students there would be little tolerance shown to motorists exceeding the speed limit or parking inappropriately in school zones.

May this be a safe school year.

Some good news for beer drinkers

More often than not a tipple of that favourite drink - beer is frowned upon.

It is said to lead to many anti-so-cial behaviours, however there are some good reasons to have a bit of a tipple of your favourite ale.

Scientific medical research report-ed in “Neurology”, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology has demonstrated that the moderate consumption of beer reduces the risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers studied 7,983 people aged 55 of age or older over an average period of six years. Those who consumed one to three drinks of beer per day had a significantly lower risk of dementia.

A study of older women found that those who drank alcohol in moderation, defined as consuming up to two drinks of beer per day performed better on memory tests than did abstainers.

It was found that Xanthohumol in hops lubricated the brain and helped to reduce neurodegenera-tion.

So hop to it and have those one or three beers a day for your healths sake.

Hinterlandgrapevine OnlineThe “NUT” Award

It matters little what the monetary penalty is or how much education is given there are some drivers who just will not take notice of the road rules. Sometimes this is because they are not aware that road rules change from time to time. One of our readers suggested that we should have a quick refresher of some of those rules. The most dangerous thing about travelling in a motor vehicle is still the “NUT BEHIND THE WHEEL”.

Mum’s favourite RecipesChicken Nuggets

- something that the kids like....

Ingredients2 cups cornflakes - 2 tbspns plain flour - 2 egg whites - olive oil - 500g chicken breasts - Tomato or BBQ sauce for dipping

MethodPreheat oven to 200c. Process cornflakes in a food processor until mix-ture resembles breadcrumbs.Place in bowl. In another bowl place flour and season with a little salt and pepper. In yet another bowl whisk the eggwhites with a fork until just a little foamy.Remove any fat from chicken and cut into bite size pieces. Toss pieces in flour then dip in eggwhite and roll in the cornflakes until completely coated.Grease a baking tray with the olive oil and place nuggets on the tray. Bake in the oven for 10 - 15 minutes until crisp and cooked through.Serve with tomato or BBQ sauce. Makes approx. 12.

Rear End AccidentsMany accidents are caused because drivers are driving too close to the vehile in front of them.

A driver must drive a sufficient distance behind a vehicle trav-elling in front of the driver so the driver can, if necessary, stop safely to avoid a collision with the vehicle.

The driver of a long vehicle must drive at least the requiredminimum distance behind an-other long vehicle travelling infront of the driver, unless the driver is driving on a multi-lane road; or a length of road in a built-up area or overtaking. Generally, that distance is for a long vehicle in another area is a minimum of 60m.

Changes at Green Park, ConondaleGreen Park, Kenilworth Road, Conondale has been a community asset for decades with administration being handles by community trustees.

Many local people will remember the country race fun days that were run as a fund raiser on behalf of the Conondale State School.

Following some disputes over the use of Green Park between the commu-nity trustee group and the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club who has been using the Green Park for nearly 30 years to hold motor bike racing events there has been a change to the administration of the park.

Some of the original local trustees have expressed some disquiet about how the change of management came about and what is the reason for the changes after the local community having administered the park over many decades. Green Park users still have a long way to go to ensure an amiable takeover of administration.

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council took over the trusteeship and administration of the park as from the 12th January 2015.

The Council will be renegotiating a sub lease with the Sunshine Coast Motor Cycle Club which will also ensure that the Park remains available for other community uses.

If you are interested in accessing and using Green Park for whatever reason please contact the Office of Andrew Powell M.P. in Maple Street, Maleny or local Sunshine Coast Councillor, Ms Jenny McKay.

Truthful Jones Tells... us that he was at the Maleny Bowls Club last week just having a small drink with Bob, a mem-ber who is 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Bowls Club with a breath-takingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman who knocks everyone’s socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm. She hangs over Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word. Ian, the bartender is all aghast.

Ian asks Bob; ‘Bob, how’d you get the trophy girlfriend?’

Bob replies, ‘Girlfriend? She’s my wife!’

Ian was astounded and asks; ‘So, how’d you persuade her to marry you?’

‘I lied about my age’, Bob replies.

‘What, did you tell her you were only 50?’

Bob smiles and says, ‘No, I told her I was 90.

Last week saw the now annual Maleny and District Australia Day Ceremony at the Maleny Show-grounds and the weather turned out almost perfect for the day.

Originally the Maleny Apex Aussie Day Breakfast it has now grown into an event that showcased just some of the recreational and community opportunities that exist in our lucky community.

There are so many community organisations that anyone of any age living in the area could not honestly say that there was noth-ing for them to do in our area.

Following the Naturalisation Ceremony to induct new Aussies into the Australian community, not only was there information on many local sports and recreation-al organisations there was a pro-gram of typical Aussie activities such as running backwards races, gumboot throwing and demon-strations of various club activities.

This great event shows the true friendly nature of our special community and is a true welcome for newer residents to the area.

Those groups such as the Maleny Apex Club, The Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club and the various service clubs who all worked towards putting on this great day should not only be well pleased with the results of the day, but should be praised for their efforts.

For those who may have missed the day then make sure that it is a must do event for 2016 and start preparing for it now.

The Musings of an old codger!

Maleny Film SocietyThe next screening of the Maleny Film Society will be on SaturdayFebruary 7th th at 7.15 p.m. The Movie will be “Force Majeure”

Force MajeureSweden/FR/DM/Norway – drama/comedy

M – 120 mins Force Majeure is a cinematic gem expertly crafted. All aspects of filmmaking – cinematography, music, editing, screenplay, acting and directing – are impeccable and balanced to create a film that is beauti-ful to look at with close to painterly images and always absorbing.

A “normal” Swedish family, Ebba and Tomas and their two children, are on a five day ski holiday in the magnificently

rendered European Alps. Everything is quite normal, although there is a bit of modern day

tension – too much talking on the cell phone – when an extraordinary event occurs that

gradually calls into question notions of masculinity, heroism, and the security

within a family.

Force Majeure is at times thrilling and other times very funny. The acting is naturalistic and the reviews have been unanimous-ly positive. Directed by Ruben Ostlund..

Whilst the number of parliamentarians was increased to 72 in 1892. Whilst women were able to vole as from 1905 it was not until 1915 that women were able to be elected to parliament, but it was not until 1929 that the first woman was elected to the Queensland parliament. It was not until 2013 that the parliament had the first woman speaker, Ms Fiona Simpson M.P.Whilst British subjects of Asian or African descent could vote as from 1959 it was not until 1965 that

Australian aboriginal and Torres Strait people could vote, albeit on a voluntary basis and in 1972 they was required to registed and vote. In 1973 the voting age was reduced to 18 years of age.Today there are 89 electorates throughout

Queensland and their size is predicated on voter numbers rather than area of electorate. To ensure this from time to time there are electoral re-distributions to ensure that the electorates remain within the required average numbers.

Queensland Election date January 31st, 2015

State Governments are responsible for domestic affairs within their jurisdictions and as such are said to be closest to the day to day affairs of most of the states residents. At the first Queensland Elections to be able to vote the voter had to be an adult male, at least 21 years of age, three year residence qualification or six months if owner or lessee of property.Multiple registrations to vote were possible through the ownership of multiple properties. Members of the Military and Police were disqualified. Voting was first past the post meaning that the person with the most primary votes was the winner - no deals done to get another candidates preferences.Initially thre were 26 Members from 16 electorates for the Legislative Assembly and 11 nominees to the Legislative Council. The electoral term was five years. The term of parliament was subsequently changed to a three year term in 1893. Queensland again led the world with the first elected Labor leader in the world when in 1899 Anderson Dawson, a journalist became Queensland Premier.

2015January

Queensland Election date announced!

Queensland was due to go to the state polls in the first half of 2015 and the Queensland Premier, Mr. Campbell Newman has now announced that the 2015 Queensland Election will take place on January 31st, 2015.To be able to vote a person has to be registered on the Queensland Electoral Roll for the seat in which they reside.Queensland has only one Chamber of State Government whilst most other states have an Upper House which acts as an overseer to the legislation that passes through the parliament. As at the 2015 election there are 85 members of the Queensland Parliament, one member each for each of the 85 electorates.Construction of The Queensland Parliament house commenced in 1864 and was not finally completed until 1889. Parliament first met in the Old Convict Buildings in May 1860, however during construction part of the Parliament building was available for meetings of Parliament as from 1868.In the path of future governments the original building was designed as a result of a contest throughout the colony and one of the conditions was that the building had to be constructed for no more than 20,000 pounds. The most suitable plans were rejected because the construction costs would be about 38,000 pounds. The then Premier and Colonial Secretary Robert Herbert completed a plan for the building and so construction commenced. The final cost for only the first stage of the building exceeded 80,000 pounds thus creating a precedent for all future governments to overrun costs.

Queensland has only one Chamber of State Government whilst most other states have an Upper House which acts as an overseer to the legislation that passes through the parliament.Queensland did have an Upper House until 1922 when it was abolished by the then Labor Government under Premier Theodore.Dating back to 1915 under the Labor Premier Thomas Ryan there was an active campaign to abolish the upper house of Parliament. The reason for abolition was said to be the inability of the Government of the day to get legislation through. The last Upper House parliament meeting was on October 27th October, 1921.Ever since varying governments have argued for both sides - should we have an Upper House or not and depending where the particular political party sits in parliament generally indicates which side of the argument they undertake. In 1859 Queensland becomes a separates from officially separating from the colony of New South WalesIn 1860 the first Queensland Parliament of eleven members convened the Legislative Council. In 1893 – A Bill providing for an elected Council makes it to the committee stage but is aborted with the prorogation of Parliament.1900, 1902, 1908– Bills aimed at modifying the power of the Council or its method of election are introduced but not passed.1915 – June – the Labor government of T J Ryan is elected and in November the government introduces a Bill to have the Council abolished. It is rejected by the Council, as is one introduced in the 1916-17 session.1917 – a referendum to abolish the Council is held, but is defeated.1918 – Labor adds 13 new members from its party to the Legislative Council. However, the Bill to abolish the Council is defeated.1919 - Labor adds 3 new members from its party to the Legislative Council. However, the Bill to abolish the Council is defeated.1920 – Lieutenant-Governor William Lennon, lately the Labor Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, appoints 14 more Labor members to the Council, giving it the numbers in the Upper House for the first time.1921 for the fifth time, the Labor party introdues a Bill to abolish the Legislative Council. It is successful an on the 27 th October – the Council meets for the last time, adjourning at 8.37 pm.1922 - The Act abolishing the Legislative Council is proclaimed.1934 – The Constitution Act is further amended, pr oviding that the Legislative Council can not be restored without a referendum.1981 – the reintroduction of an Upper House becomes National Party policy.

This informaion was obtained from the Library of the Queensland Parliament.

As it happened!..abolition of the Upper House

When an election is in the air in Australia today out comes the big cheque books and money appears to be no concern when needing to spend it to get voters into the right frame of mind to vote for any given party.

Whilst this has always been so today television and radio plays a big part of the advertising blitz. Everything today is clinical and made for television, including the timing of major announcements.

Who can remember well into the 1950’s when aspiring politicians would take to the “stump” and address the common man. Centenary Park in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane was a very popular place on a Sunday. Politicians and would be politicians of all colours and Trade Unionists would take to Centenary Park and address the multitude. No electrical equipment was needed as they all knew how to project their voices and get their words out.

For a Sunday’s entertainment many younger people would go to Centenary Park to heckle the sprukers. Usually it was sprukers 6 hecklers 0 such was the speaking skills of the sprukers.

Many politicians today could learn a lot from many of those older politicians who were quick witted and could turn objections thrown at them by observers into a comedy routine.

It was during this time that political intrigue in Queensland was at its best, with much of the dissension caused on religious grounds. It was during this period that Labor was in power in Queensland with Rockhampton born Vince Gair, a catholic as Premier. He received much of his support from the Trade Union movement. Following a split of personalities within the Queensland Labor government after the 1956 elections and into 1957 Gair was deposed which led to a split and he formed the Queensland Labor Party.

This split led to the fall of the Labor Government in Queensland and the new government was led by Frank Nicklin from Caloundra and the Labor party would not return to power in Queensland until 1989.

Gair was subsequently elected in 1964 to the Federal Senate as a member of the DLP of which he was then leader.

Until this long period of a conservative government in Queensland the state had been ruled mainly by Labor governments.

Many people also forget the actions of Gair that were designed to help Labor under Gough Whitlam gain power of the Senate federally in 1972. Gair was subsequently appointed as Ambassador to Ireland.

Intrigues of the various governments are not things of modern day. Ever since Adam and Eve have backroom deals been done by governments simply to keep their feet under the table of power.

Now with a new election next weekend is there another era of Queensland history about to begin. Who knows what is in store for Queensland and Queenslanders after January 31st, 2015.

Only one thing is for sure and that is that all politicians will rule in favour of their specific followings.

Bombarded with information!…it has always been so

Vikings! People either admire them or think they’re nothing but barbar-ians. The hit TV series “Vikings” has increased the interest in them over the past 2 years however many people don’t real-ize that Viking (and other historical) re-enactment has been taking place in Australia since the mid 1970s.

Queensland is actually the home to the largest Medieval Festival in the Southern Hemisphere – “The Abbey Medieval Festival”.

Held at Caboolture’s Ab-bey Museum, the Festival is an annual July event. 2015 will be it’s 26th year. It certainly is an event not to be missed for anyone interested in Viking or Medieval cultures. You never know what it will lead to!

In 2006, local Maleny resident Elizabeth Sek visited The Abbey for the first time and the result was life changing! She ‘discovered’ a group called “Saga Vikings” and felt like she had “come home”. Within a year Elizabeth had joined her new family, becoming a Viking re-enac-

tor and had found her true passion – leatherwork.

Over the next 8 years, Elizabeth became more involved in Viking

re-enactment, join-ing 2 other groups as well as co-founding one herself.

In 2012 she decided to turn her passion for both Viking re-en-actment and leather-work into a business and started “The Happy Viking”.

She has taken part in a number of festivals/events including The

Abbey Medieval Festi-val, NEMAS, Ironfest, St

Ives’ Medieval Festival, History Alive and Viking Village Solstice.

The Happy Viking creates unique leather pieces influenced, natural-ly, by Viking, Celtic and Medieval art. The majority of her clients are Viking re-enactors themselves so her work includes items that would have been used in the Dark Ages such as pouches, drinking horn holders, knife sheaths, leather board games and belts.

The Happy Viking also specializes in custom orders and Elizabeth has created a variety of products from guitar straps to Eowyn’s Dernhelm costume from Lord of the Rings. Her work is now being sold worldwide.

Viking re-enactment is

a more than a hobby – it’s a way of life.

There are over 50 Viking and/orMe-dieval groups and about 15 Medie-val Festivals happening every year within Australia.

Other than explorers, Vikings were farmers, inventors, skilled craftsmen and efficient traders. A lot that can be learnt and this is what Viking re-enactment groups focus on – keeping the old skills alive. Some join for the combat and others join for the craft. It seems, whatever the reason, all who become part of the Viking re-enactment family feel that they have also “come home”.

Rollers work well with smooth surfaces such as gyprock or fibro. If you are doijng the whole room start with the ceiling and work down. Do one room at a time to keep your sanity.

Australia Day in Maleny has now become Maleny iconic event which included the Maleny Apex Club Aussie Day Breakfast and a Citizen-ship Ceremony.

The Maleny Rural District Fire Service also is involved through the Aussie Day Sports Expo. The Maleny Unit handed out fire infor-mation and answered questions. Blazer, the QFS Fire Mascot was present and took a walk about around the show grounds meeting the youngsters and having a photo taken with them.

Olin, see photo below left, is our junior fire brigade member and he went on walkabout with Blazer.

Maleny RFB also handed out bro-chures on being bush fire prepared, badges and colour books for the little ones.

The RFB would like to thank all of you who stopped by to have a chat.

Our community is still in the fire danger period with the high tem-peratures and lightning storms.

Blazer says stay safe and be sure to have an escape route from your home before you need to use it.

Don’t forget fire safety is primarily your responsibility.
