Otro medio de transporte público de Sevilla es elTranvía Metro_Centro, en funcionamiento desdeoctubre de 2007 con un recorrido que une la PlazaNueva, en el corazón de la ciudad, y SanBernardo, con paradas en la Avda. de laConstitución, frente al Archivo de Indias, en laPuerta Jerez, junto al Hotel Alfonso XIII y en elPrado de San Sebastián. Dispone de un Sistemade Acumulación de Energía (ACR) que le permitecircular sin catenaria entre Plaza Nueva y elArchivo de Indias. Su capacidad es de 260 perso-nas, con una frecuencia de paso de 6/7 minutos yuna duración del recorrido de 19 minutos.

METRO_CENTRO. T1 (TRAM)

Another of Seville’s public transport systems isthe Metro_Centro Tram, which has been in ope-ration since October 2007 and runs betweenPlaza Nueva, in the heart of the city, and SanBernardo, stopping at Avda. de la Constitución(in front of the Archive of the Indies), PuertaJerez (next to the Alfonso XIII Hotel) and Pradode San Sebastián. It has a Rapid ChargeAccumulator system which allows it to runwithout overhead lines between Plaza Nuevaand the Archive of the Indies. It can carry 260passengers and runs every 6/7 minutes, with ajourney time of 19 minutes.

Sevilla toda es monumento. Desde siemprefue así. Los restos de las culturas y los pue-blos que la han habitado se acumulan. Pasanlos hombres, los siglos se suceden y Sevillacambia sin cambiar. Restos y presencias quese viven en cada calle, a la vuelta de cadaesquina. Sevilla monumento de monumentos.Columnas de la calle Mármoles sorprendendesde el suelo que un día lejano fué temploromano. Trozos de la muralla musulmana, tan-tas veces reconstruida, quedan junto a laPuerta y la Basílica de la Macarena. La Torredel Oro, junto al río Guadalquivir, que losromanos llamaban Betis, era el fin por el sur dela muralla que rodeaba la ciudad. En losReales Alcázares lo islámico se refina y con-funde para trastornar los sentidos de los rudoscristianos de la Reconquista. También laGiralda es mora y cristiana y hasta romana ensus cimientos; vigilante y esbelta junto al Patiode los Naranjos, entrada de lo que era la mez-quita mayor de Sevilla, sobre la que se edificóla gran Catedral gótica, el tercer mayor templode la cristiandad.

Palacio culto y renacentista de la Casa dePilatos cerca de la ruta secreta del mudéjar, igle-sias de Santa Catalina, San Marcos, SantaMarina y San Gil, Palacio de los Marqueses de laAlgaba. Pero más que nada, en la Sevilla cuna deartistas, la explosión barroca de sus grandes tem-plos, El Salvador y la Magdalena, pero tambiénotros más recogidos como la Iglesia del Hospitalde la Caridad, decorada por Murillo, o el Barrocogalante y elegante de San Luis de los Franceses.O iglesias reformadas una y otra vez pero que nohan destruido su pasado, como Santa María laBlanca edificada sobre una antigua sinagoga enlo que era la Judería, tan cerca del pintorescoBarrio de Santa Cruz.

También iglesias y conventos transformadosen edificios civiles como el Convento de laMerced hoy sede del Museo de Bellas Artes, lasegunda pinacoteca nacional tras El Prado deMadrid. La Iglesia de los Venerables Sacer-dotes donde se asienta la Fundación Focus deintensa actividad cultural, o el más antiguoHospital de las Cinco Llagas, donde se reponíanlos marinos que volvían de las Indias, conver-tido hoy en Parlamento Andaluz.

And every church, convent and palace is a monu-ment woven into the fabric of streets and plazas.The cultured Renaissance palace, Casa de Pilatos(Pilate’s House), close to the secret route of theMudejar churches: Santa Catalina, San Marcos,Santa Marina and San Gil. But more than anywhe-re else, in this Seville that has been the cradle ofartists, the Baroque explosion of its great chur-ches, El Salvador and Magdalena, but other lesswell known churches, such as the Church of theHospital de la Caridad, decorated by Murillo, or theGalante Baroque of San Luis de los Franceses. But also churches and convents that have beentransformed into civil buildings, such as theMerced Convent, today the Fine Arts Museum,Spain’s second most important art gallery afterthe Prado in Madrid. The Venerables SacerdotesChurch, today the home of the FocusFoundation, or the older Hospital de las CincoLlagas, where the sailors returning from theIndies recovered, which is today the site of theAndalusian Parliament.

CATEDRAL

Sobre la antigua mezquita aljama construida porlos árabes en 1198 se levanta el tercer mayortemplo de la Cristiandad. Una catedral del sigloXV que ofrece al visitante verdaderas maravillasen su interior y entre todas el gran RetabloMayor. Tanto contenido como continente mere-cen una visita. Desde el exterior vamos a obser-var la mezcla de estilos, desde el almohade algótico, del renacimiento al barroco pasando porel manierismo. Por supuesto hay que subir a laGiralda, equilibrada mezcla de estilos arquitec-tónicos entre lo islámico y lo renacentista, coro-nada por el Giraldillo (vigía y veleta de la ciu-dad), con 35 tramos de rampas para ascender y,desde arriba, disfrutar de una espectacular vistade la ciudad.

CATHEDRAL

The third largest Christian temple sits over a for-mer mosque built by Arabs in 1198. This 15thcentury cathedral dazzles visitors with its truewonders, in particular, the magnificent mainaltarpiece. Both the interior and exterior areworth a visit. The outside is a mix of styles inclu-ding Almohad, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroqueand Mannerism. A climb up the Giralda is a mustto enjoy spectacular views of the city. The tower,a balanced mix of Islamic and Renaissancearchitectural styles crowned by the Giraldillo(vane and eye of the city), has 35 ramps.

REAL ALCÁZAR

TORRE DEL ORO

Torre albarrana avanzada sobre la orilla del ríoGuadalquivir, antiguamente conectada a laTorre de la Plata y, a través de ésta, al Alcázary a todo el cinturón de murallas que rodeabany defendían la ciudad.

De planta dodecagonal fue construida por losárabes almohades a comienzos del siglo XIIIpara protección y control del Puerto, pareceser que mediante una gruesa cadena que cru-zaba el río hasta alguna fortificación de la ori-lla opuesta.

Repetidamente restaurada a lo largo de los siglos,la últma vez en 2004-2005, en la actualidad alber-ga entre sus muros interesantes colecciones perte-necientes al Museo Naval de la ciudad.

TOWER OF GOLD

An Albarrana tower on the River Guadalquivir,that was originally connected to the Alcázar andthe walls that surrounded and protected the citythrough the Torre de la Plata.

The 13th century dodecagonal tower was builtduring the Almohad period to protect and con-trol access to the port, apparently with a thickchain anchored to some sort of fortificationacross the river.

Repeatedly restored over the centuries, mostrecently in 2004-2005, it now houses interes-ting collections that belong to Seville's NavalMuseum.

A masterpiece of the Sevillian architect AníbalGonzález. The square was built to house theSpanish Pavilion at the 1929 Ibero-AmericanExhibition. More than 200 metres in diameter, itis by far the largest square in the city, and hometo various government agencies.

Built in Regionalist style, the eye is dazzled bythe wealth of intricate cut brick ornaments,sculptures and Triana tiles. The spaces dedi-cated to the Spanish provinces are undoubtedlythe most impressive.

Nearby is Plaza de América, with a small cen-tral lake and magnificent gardens surroundedby the Mudejar Pavilion, Royal Pavilion andArchaeological Museum.

ARCHIVO GENERAL DE INDIAS

Situado junto a la catedral, es un edificio de esti-lo renacentista construido a partir de 1584 comoLonja de Mercaderes durante el reinado deFelipe II, según planos de Juan de Herrera,arquitecto del Monasterio de El Escorial.

En 1785 se transforma en Archivo General deIndias para centralizar en él toda la documenta-ción conservada del periodo colonial español enAmérica y Filipinas, siendo hoy día el mayorarchivo existente sobre ese periodo de laHistoria al que acuden investigadores e historia-dores de todo el mundo. Entre sus muros seguardan textos autógrafos originales deCristóbal Colón y Magallanes entre otrosmuchos personajes históricos.

GENERAL ARCHIVES OF THE INDIES

Located near the Cathedral, the construction ofthis former Merchants' Exchange, built inRenaissance style, began in 1584 under KingPhilip II. The original design is by Juan deHerrera, architect of El Escorial Monastery.

The General Archives of the Indies were housedhere in 1785, bringing under one roof all docu-mentation from the Spanish colonial period inAmerica and the Philippines. It is today the lar-gest repository of documents from that historicalperiod available to researchers and historiansacross the world. Within its walls are originalautograph materials of many historical figures,including Christopher Columbus and Magellan.

BARRIO DE SANTA CRUZ

Lugar de la antigua Judería, es uno de los luga-res más románticos de la ciudad. Entre suscalles estrechas, no hay que dejar de visitar lacalle Agua y la Plaza de Santa Cruz, sus coque-tas plazas, sus bellos patios abiertos al exterior,que le dan tanta calidad al barrio que en unapequeña área se concentran auténticas obrasde arte del urbanismo típico andaluz.

IGLESIA DE SANTA ANA

Construida en el barrio de Triana durante el sigloXIII en estilo gótico mudéjar, es una de las iglesiasmás antiguas de Sevilla. El retablo mayor, recien-temente restaurado, es una obra maestra del artesevillano con la hornacina central dedicada aSanta Ana y a la Virgen María. Sus capillas latera-les exponen obras de arte de importantes autores.

Built in the 13th century in Triana in Mudejar-Gothic style, it is one of the oldest churches inSeville. The main altarpiece, recently restored,is a masterpiece of Sevillian art with a centralniche dedicated to St. Anne and the VirginMary. Works of art by famous artists can befound in the side chapels.

SANTA CLARA CONVENT

Founded after the reconquest of the city, thespaces are arranged around a light-filled cloister.

Closed for years, it has now been restored andadapted for cultural events and exhibitions. It isnow used as the Santa Clara Cultural Centre.

It is one of the most notable stately homes of thecity for both its architecture and its works of art.

PABELLÓN DE LA NAVEGACIÓN

Edificio singular construido para la ExposiciónUniversal de Sevilla de 1992, fue uno de lospabellones que tuvo mayor éxito entre los visi-tantes de aquel recordado evento.

Situado en la ribera del Guadalquivir, en laactualidad remodelado y acondicionado, exhibeuna interesante exposición acerca de la historiay evolución de la navegación por el OcéanoAtlántico y su relación con la ciudad.

Así mismo, en los últimos años, se han dotado yhabilitado diversas salas para la celebración deeventos, conferencias, reuniones y congresos queresultan únicos, en éste espacio excepcional.

NAVIGATION PAVILION

An iconic building completed for the 1992 SevilleWorld Exhibition, it was one of the most visitedpavilions of this memorable event.

Located on the banks of the Guadalquivir, ithas since been renovated and adapted tohouse an interesting exhibition about the his-tory and evolution of Atlantic navigation and itslink with the city.

FÁBRICA DE ARTILLERÍA

Creada en torno al año 1565 enel barrio de San Bernardo y pos-teriormente renovada en 1720,el edificio responde a un modelobarroco tardío con incorporacio-nes neoclásicas. Durante siglosla fábrica ha sido uno de los prin-cipales elementos del desarrolloeconómico del barrio.

MONASTERIO DE SANISIDORO DEL CAMPO

Fundado en 1301, se encuentraen el municipio de Santiponce, apocos kilometros de Sevilla.Declarado Monumento Nacionalen 1872, albergó una de lasmejores bibliotecas de España.En este singular monasterio for-taleza se yuxtaponen el estilogótico y el mudéjar.

The new Majaravique GoodsTransport Centre, to be located in the north ofthe city, is another important facility.
