Making good use of your Winter 'time'

So the daylight is ending and the winter monthswill soon spell out the reason not to venturetoo far from the house. So what’s the plan forwinter then?

Perhaps decorating one of the bedrooms, after all it’sneeded a makeover now for a long while, some brightdécor, new linen and carpets along with a builtin wardrobe to round it off. Or maybe you fancytaking on a larger project, namely the hall stairsand landing which completely disturbs the bodyof the house everyday for weeks! Or as youcan’t get the daylight in these shorter days towork outside and that garden needs some TLC or apatio, retainer wall or fencing needs replacing.

tradesman that can carry outjobs for you that you just can’tseem to complete or have thetime to do.

Summer time ends at 2.00amBST(1.00 am GMT) onSunday 31stOctober 2010 theclocks will move back an hour as civil timemoves from British Summer Time (BST) toCoordinated Universal Time (almost identical toGreenwich Mean Time).

The ninth European Parliament and Council Directiveon Summer Time arrangements states that summer (fordaylight saving) time will be kept between the last Sundayin March to the last Sunday in October. The changes willtake place at 01.00GMT, so there is nothing like planningahead – a note for the calendar is 27th March 2011 asthis spells the end of the winter and time and yes, youguessed it summertime begins all over again……

Summer time ends at 2.00am BST(1.00am GMT) on Sunday 31st October 2010

All of these jobs can be completed quickly efficientlyand professionally by looking through the advertisers inthis Focus Towcester magazine and finding your local

The Real Arts and Crafts Fairs are held onthe first Saturday in every month (exceptJanuary) in Towcester Town Hall. Theemphasis is on supporting local handmadecraft and design so the goods on sale are

The first 100 days of the coalitionGovernment have been characterisedby a surprising harmony between theConservatives and Liberal Democrats andalso a staggering amount of proposed

legislative change. Significant changes are alsoproposed for pension benefits. The headline beingthat the Government is currently consulting on changesto remove the requirement to take benefits by the ageof 75. Currently pension investors are required to buyan Annuity at the age of 75 or invest in AlternativelySecured Pension (ASP) which is unattractive for most.Interim rules are in place for those approaching75 until 77 and after this time there will be norequirements purchasing an Annuity.

This means you will be allowed to retain your pensionfunds and simply draw an income keeping the fundsinvested in whatever assets you wish. This mayproduce a better return than the low Annuity rates weare experiencing at present.

The other significant benefit are thechanges to Death Benefits.Currently on death in drawdownbefore aged 75 there is a 35%tax charge if benefits are paid outto the surviving spouse as a lumpsum. After age 75 an Annuity isincapable of returning a lump sum, only a regular income stream andwith an ASP a lump sum payment ispotentially subject to buying tax charges of up to 82%.It is proposed the tax charges will be replaced witha single tax charge of 55% for those in drawdown orthose over 75 who have not taken their benefits.

These proposals should come as a relief to manyinvestors approaching age 75 and facing currently apotential reduction in their income and the loss of theability to pass benefits to the next generation.

How to help your dog through Bonfire Night

Many dogs are scared of sudden orunusually loud noises, often mostapparent in their response to thesound of fireworks. In general if dogs

are exposed to a variety of sights and sounds from anearly age, they are less likely to have adverse reactionswhen they grow up. There is, however, no guaranteethat even the calmest of dogs won’t display anunexpected reaction later in life – it only takes a singlescary event to induce a fear response.

reinforcing the fear, set a goodexample by not reacting tothe noise and try to ignoreany fearful behaviour. Closethe curtains and put on thetelevision or some music to drown out some of thenoise. Divert your dog’s attention by providing foodfilled toys. Provide a safe haven or den but make sureyour dog is used to the space well in advance.

Your veterinary surgeon can prescribe sedatives forthe worst affected dogs but more importantly willbe able to advise you about treatments that may beuseful in the months leading up to Bonfire Night.Sound therapy can be used to teach your dog not tobe upset by the noises. Pheromone diffusers, collarsand sprays are available which can have a calmingeffect on dogs in stressful situations. There are alsosome natural and herbal remedies available withoutprescriptions.

Winter Flu viruses‘swine flu’ – yes, that swine flu. It may have been outof the headlines, but it remains active elsewhere in theworld, and is expected to be a cause of flu this winterin the UK.

If you have a chronic health condition and feelunwell with it, best to see your GP or practice nurse

So what’s the best thing to do when you get a coldor flu? If you have a chronic health condition andfeel unwell with it, best to see your GP or practicenurse. If you chose to self-treat, the best medicationsare Paracetamol (this settles your temperature andmakes you feel better) and a decongestant (whichunblocks your nose). These two combined are themain ingredients in most over-the-counter cold andflu remedies. Chose one brand and take it regularly, along with plenty of fluids (as a fever will dehydrateyou), and I hope you get well soon.

Having been on a gap year with auniversity place confirmed sinceFebruary, it hadn’t really hit me that Iwould actually be moving away in thenext academic year.

It is only recently, within the last 8 weeksor so, that it has dawned on me that Ihave done absolutely nothing to preparefor the next major step in my life! Whenreflecting on it all, a mix of emotions andthoughts hit me; anxiety – I still need to getcrockery and cutlery, learn how to cook,

Looking forward to the University life...going to make many of newfriends and most importantly,no more getting woken up atstupid O’clock by the dogs.

So as the last month at home bares down on me, Ihave realised that this year out has been a blessingin disguise. I am better prepared, more willing andfar more excited to embrace university life as anindependent person. I am looking forward to thechanges ahead, instead of a quiet pint at the BraveOld Oak- a few Jägerbombs in Eastbourne Townor, instead of a Saturday afternoon at TowcestriansRugby Club, a social on a Wednesday night with the

As moving date gets closerand closer, I feel the negativeapprehensions of university fadingaway and being replaced by sheerexcitement.

Asbestos - The hidden killer

More people die every year throughAsbestos related illness which ismore than are killed on the UKroads. Each week approximately8 Joiners, 6 electricians and 4

plumbers die from asbestos -related diseases.

These statistics do not take into account non tradespeople who perhaps do a “bit of DIY” we are also atrisk. If you live in or work on a house which has beenbuilt or refurbished before the year 2000then Asbestos could be present.

If you identify Asbestos then call in experthelp. Good practice is to isolate the area;use hand tools not power tools and keepmaterial damp in order to reduce airbornedust. Wear a suitable face mask andprotective clothing as an ordinary face mask will notsuffice. Don’t consume food or drink whilst workingand clean up as you go. Wear boots without lacesdon’t wash the protective clothing especially at home.

Double bag with labels inmarked asbestos waste bagsand correctly dispose.

Common hiding places forAsbestos are Ceiling Tiles,Pipe Insulation, Boilers, Sprayed coatings, Boardsaround windows radiators and fireplaces. Soffitboards, Textured Coatings, The insides of some firedoors, Fuse Boxes and Electrical Switchgear.

If you live in or work on a house which hasbeen built or refurbished before the year2000 then asbestos could be present.

Good practice is to be trained in the correct handlingof Asbestos, plan the work properly and ensure youhave the right equipment. If in doubt don’t startwork before you find out more at Asbestos Essentials.Download the FREE Task sheets at www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/essentials

Repairing damaged exterior renderedsurfaces such as cracked steps, chipsin patio or paving, all call for a firm nononsense fix that withstand both the hotand cold elements of Summer and Winter.

With the right materials the fix can be simple andeasy. So a Multi Purpose Exterior Filler is tough againstsun and frosts and sets in about 60 mins. Moreimportantly it doesn’t shrink or crack.

Quick Set Cement which is ideal for resetting bolts orbrackets into walls can also be used for making goodrepairs to drains, underwater, in and around ponds.

Tip- for both concrete fillers add a little PVAadhesive to improve adhesion.

For the hard to get at gaps where conventionalfillers are more difficult to use then try a Foam Filler(Expander). There may be a small hole but a deeplarge cavity. A pipe might pass through a wall andthe hole requires filling but be careful not to over fillthe cavity, when set the foam can be trimmed, thenplastered over and finally painted.

It happens every time of the year and someof the most spectacular autumn scenes areavailable for all to see locally. The garden, woods and forests are all there to view in theirsplendour and beauty. It always seems to come

as a surprise to people that leaves fall off the treesin the autumn. I do reassure them that this happenedbefore and that the phase will pass. However it’staken as a personal affront that the leaves have fallen

At this time of year a new ritual takesplace “Leaf herding”, it takes priorityover washing the car on a Sundaymorning. The whine of the twostroke motors can be heardpowering the leaf blowers whichtriumphantly gather leaves from thefour corners of the garden from earlymorning to the failing light. Goldenbrown, crimson red, water drenchedand rotting leaves resemble wounded butterflies beingherded like strays to a convenient spot. The sound onlysilenced by the last leaf to fall victim to the blower andthen laid to rest in the recycling bin until next Sundaywhen it starts all over again! Happy collecting.

Great Ideas - Here today gone tomorrow

Great ideas and sometimes at greatexpense both financially and socially. But what is change for, is it for thebetter or worse? Is it a way to createnew jobs just to keep the social and

economic wheel turning and to keep schoolleavers at school for as long as possible so thatthe unemployment figures look good?

Look at our health and safety standards, perhaps the highest in the world. Neededof course but do we go over the top? Children’sschool trips being cancelled because Teachers fearthey may break health and safety rules and facelitigation if a pupil has an accident. Our fire fightersstand by and watch buildings burn down restrictingthe fire to the immediate vicinity as they can no longerenter the building to fire fightunless there is a life risk.

Take ASBOS (Anti-social-behaviour orders) for example,

the new government say that theywant to move beyond them, The homesecretary Theresa May says policeshould be able to use their “commonsense” to deal with anti-socialbehaviour, come on, get a grip, this isthe real world out here, not your ivory tower Mrs May.

Only in May this year HIPS (Home information Packs)were scrapped 33 months after being introducedbuilding an industry from nothing and then castingaside 3000 jobs overnight. That’s progress. Maybeit’s just an admission of a something that achievesvery little.

Theresa May says police should be ableto use their “common sense” to deal with

anti-social behaviour

So what’s next? Perhaps another Scrappage scheme, this time for motorbikes, bicycles, toasters or even yourdentures? Who knows!

Just call me… Grumpy Grandad!!

Well, that’s thedaughtersfault you see,she started

this, it’s new to mebeing a Grandad.

Kids, they are not all bad butthe best way to communicatewith them is by mobilephone or a raspberry or is it

blackberry? Forget good old fashioned plain speakingEnglish as a text is the most likely way to grab theirattention, oh and forget spelling words correctly; theyjust won’t understand it.

Mopeds resemble the sounds of garden Strimmersbeing ridden past my house 10 times an hour becauselittle Johnny can and has nothing better to do. LittleTommy, three doors away starts up his car ten times aday enacting the day when he can be free to roamthe roads but yet to pass his driving theory test.

I started a new collection the other day, the aim is tocollect 6 vouchers off discarded drinks cartons thatblow onto my drive (which shouldn’t be hard) andwhich litter the road outside my house. With them Ican collect a free coffee from the “Big Chain” drivethrough. At least they can buy me a FREE coffee forclearing up after their customers mess!

kids, they are not all bad but the best wayto communicate with them is by mobile

phone or a raspberry or is it blackberry?

Where do I stop? Well, for now it’s all about a nonnegotiable council local building development and arecent central government grant given to extend a newfootpath by about one metres width the breadth ofTowcester at a cost of £300k.

Now Winters on its way and energy and petrol priceincreases loom. Is Great Britain still Great? Of courseit is but why was it “Great Grandad”? Oh no, notagain… perish the thought!!

Towcester driver, Rob Barnett, continueshis campaign in the 750 Motor ClubChampionship with recent outings at BrandsHatch and Silverstone.

One of a large field of 34 drivers, Rob did well tofinish 5th in the first race at Brands Hatch, from astarting position of 12th.”It’s a challenging circuit asmany parts of the track are quite tight, but I got agood start. There were some hard fought overtakingbattles out there. I really enjoyed it and I was pleasedwith the result,” he commented after the race. In thesecond, event-filled race Rob once again worked hisway up to 5th. However, contact with another carwhile overtaking on Druid’s hairpin left Rob’s MR2 inneed of some attention before Silverstone.

The team were looking forward to their ‘home’circuit on August Bank Holiday. The car ran wellin testing, lap times were encouraging. It seemedthat little could stand in the way of another top sixfinish. Local sponsors, Julian Hunt and Briar Hill

Only 4 lapsfrom the finish Rob retired the car with head gasketfailure. “It’s frustrating, but that’s motor racing,” saida philosophical Rob. “Now we have to get the carback into shape for the Birkett Relay in October.”

Getting to grips with new car finance

This time we explainthree productsoffered whenpurchasing a caron Finance.

Payment Protection InsurancePPI is the insurance that covers payments if you are unableto work through accident, sickness or some instances ofunemployment.

It can be a valuable insurance, but has become notoriousfor being costly, difficult to claim on, difficult to canceland often sold when it is inappropriate. The total cost ofthe insurance is often rolled up into the amount borrowedso policyholders end up paying interest on the premiumsand find it difficult to cancel.

Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP)If your car is written off through accident, fire or theft, acomprehensive car insurance policy will pay out its currentmarket value, but it will not pay for any outstanding

finance deals you have signed up to.GAP is designed to cover this possibleshortfall, so it can be a valuable extra.Read the policy to make sure that allcosts are taken into account as it hasbeen known for some GAP policies not

to live up to expectations.

GaP is designed to cover this possibleshortfall, so it can be a valuable extra.

Vehicle Replacement CoverThis is designed to top up your car insurance so you canhave a brand-new replacement if it is written off. It canbe useful if your car insurance pays out only the currentmarket value of the car. Some policies will actually payfor a brand new replacement so check before you takeVehicle Replacement Cover.

Remember that you are entitled to obtain independentquotations for similar or improved products when buyingyour new car. Next Time: Car Insurance Basics.
