2012 Force Open Day

Following the huge popularity of the event lastyear, Northamptonshire Police will be holdingthe 2012 Open Day on Saturday 12 May,from 11am to 4pm, at Wootton Hall Park.

Inspector Nick Lyall said: “We had great feedbackfrom the crowds that came along in 2011 andwe’ll be adding even more attractions to last year’sfavourites so it’s certainly a date for people to put intheir diaries.”

This free event is a fantastic opportunity to find outmore about the work of Northamptonshire Police,who are currently planning a host of excitingdemonstrations and scenarios to make sure everyonewho attends will be guaranteed to have a fun-packedday and to learn about the many aspects of policing.

There will be stands and displays offering a widevariety of information and advice, fun activities forchildren, refreshments and Safer Community Teamsfrom across the county will be there for people tomeet their local officers and PCSOs.”

This event is currently in the planning stages sothe detail of all activities are yet to be confirmed,however the following demonstrations and scenarioswill be taking place:• Armed response vehicle and dogs demonstration• Petrol bombing demonstration• Off-road motorbike demonstration• Taser demonstration• Emergency response scenario• Mock trial scenario• Force Control Room demonstration• Collision investigation teamInformation about the open day will be publicised asit becomes available. Raising fundsfor “4Seb”

Seb was born on the 15thJune 2008, he was 14weeks early and from day1 he had a battle to stay

alive but overcame everything thatwas thrown at him. At 3 days old the news camethat Seb had, had a massive bleed to the brain andthat this was likely to paralyse him, and that the extentof the damage wouldn’t be evident until he wasolder and started to develop. A year later he wasdiagnosed with Cerebral Palsy which meant that hewould probably never walk alone again.

After some really hard work from members ofhis family and the generosity of local people,through fundraising £45,000 was raised to

take him to America for an operation.

After some really hard work from members of his familyand the generosity of local people, through fundraising£45,000 was raised to take him to America foran operation. A procedure called Selective DorsalRhyzotomy (SDR) which could mean he may be able towalk independently just like other children of his age.

No miracle cure but a great success however Sebneeds a minimum of a year’s intensive physiotherapyand probably for the rest of his life, so in order that thisoperation was not a waste and he get the best chancefor independence there will be a Charity Ball for familyand friends at Potterspury Lodge in June to raise funds.

T he warm spring sun combined withApril showers usually provide thebest growing conditions of theyear. All hands on the pump

as you try to keep up with the massivegrowth of your plants, and of coursethe weeds. It’s not too late to coveryour shrub bed with 50mm of mulch.This will keep in the moisture and suppressthe weed growth. The only weeds that getthrough 50mm of mulch would be the really perniciousweeds: docks, nettles and couch grass.

With the lack of rain over the last 15 months there arefears of drought and hose pipe bans. Save your waterin a butt and rig up an automatic water system.

When sowing your vegetable seeds don’t sow thewhole packet at once. Stagger the planting, sow themliterally in bite size chunks. Sow some every 1 or 2

weeks otherwise they will all be ready foreating at the same time. This is especiallyrelevant to lettuce, radish, beetroot, peas,etc, the faster growing vegetables. It isnot so important with the slow maturingvegetables, like Brussels sprouts, potatoesand the root vegetables.

Though my asparagus and veg usually geteaten on the way to the kitchen!

Herbaceous plants grow vigorously in the spring.Don’t forget to place the plant support over themso that they grow through it. It gives much moreunobtrusive and natural support rather than tying themup after they have blown over or collapsed.

Towcester is pleased to announce the 10thMidsummer Music Festival. The Rotary, Lionsand Centurions Clubs of Towcester are combining

once again to put on another sparkling event, whichwill be hosted by the Mayor at 11 separate locations,all within a short distance of the Market Place.

The official start is Saturday 23rd June at 7.15pm bythe Mayor from the Town Hall steps, but several of thevenues plan to have live music playing even earlierthan that. The music will continue until 10 or 11pmdepending on the venue. Many of the venues will beserving food and drink.
