PRESIDENT’S REPORT Our Christmas Party was a wonderful night with the vocal talents of Tim Madden entertaining us as we enjoyed Tapas plates and catching up with many of our longtime Friends such as Don Robertson, Di McCormack and Margot Davies. It was with excitement that I attended the launch of the new name of The Arts Centre Gold Coast -HOTA- and the opening of the long-awaited, new outdoor performance area. The internal flexible space is fitted with state of the art technical features that will attract many top-level performers and directors. It was with excitement that I attended the launch of the new name of The Arts Centre Gold Coast -HOTA- and the opening of the long-awaited, new outdoor performance area.

Friends Movie Night – This was held on Thursday the 25th of January in our Friends Meet Up Area at the Cinema. 75 Members attended the showing of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and enjoyed their pre-movie drinks & cheese platters. It was a wonderful night and a chance to catch up.

On Average, $20,000 per year has been given to HOTA for their Youth Theatre Project. We have also contributed to “Bumpy Angels”, “Jazz Jam at The Arts Centre with James Morrison”, “Immersion Day 2016”, “Energies 2017”, the

Rossini Project, “Mary Poppins the Broadway Musical” and Youth Theatre Project “Flood”.

We also initiated Jazz on Sundays which was held on the first Sunday of the month from January to September 2017 on

The Terrace.

As like-minded people sharing an appreciation of the Arts, you are always welcome to suggest a Cause or Special Interest that you would like us to consider in the future. We are always open to hearing about new ideas on how to further support our Cause, with a special focus on our thriving and talented youth on the Gold Coast from grassroots to graduates! $25,000 Donation to Griffith University Queensland College of the Arts last year establishing The Friends of the Gold Coast Art Centre Gift Fund Honours Scholarship in the Visual Arts.

The creation of this scholarship is in line with the Mission and Vision of the Board of the Friends of the Arts Centre Gold Coast Gift Fund to develop young and talented Gold Coast visual and performing artists.

Thanks to your Membership Contributions and Tax Deductible Donations, for over 32 Years we as the Friends of the Arts Centre Gold Coast have been proudly supporting Visual and Performing Youth, with awards, scholarships, and grants.

Whilst is has been a fairly quiet time, we are working on some great functions for the post Commonwealth Games 2018 period. Aboriginal Exhibition – Guided Viewing Thursday, April 26 at 4pm sharp – $15 Meet and pay at the Gallery Entrance This exclusive Guided Viewing includes a Post-Viewing Event on the Café Veranda, a Gift Bag of Goodies, a Glass of “Bay of Stones” Wine, plus Artisan Breads and Dips. More details will be provided for this event.

Award Ceremony for the Friends of the Arts Centre Gold Coast Gift Fund Griffith University Scholarship Friday, 4 May at 5pm in the Lakeside Terrace, HOTA Join us for this auspicious and inaugural occasion where the winner of the 2018 Scholarship will be announced. More details to come.

Special Friends Fundraiser Movie Event Early June Keep an eye out for more details to our Special Fundraiser Movie Event at HOTA Cinemas. It’s in aid of the Friends of the Arts Gold Coast Gift Fund, which provides Grants and Scholarships to our local thriving and talented performing arts youth.

Max Boyd was one of the very first Friends dating back to 1986, and in following years Max served as President of the Friends. He was a major influence in the establishment of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, now known as HOTA. Max was an eminent Gold Coast Artist and was

Members mingled with old and new friends before watching the all-time classic – Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

best known for his beautiful Australian landscape and homestead paintings, some at HOTA itself. Featured on our cover and in its entirety below, is one of Max’s rare seascape paintings commissioned in 1974 and entitled “Seascape Serene near Little Burleigh”.
