For the first time in January 2014 we helped the RSPB

to identify what wildlife is living in our green spaces and how many there are. For example only 3% of people saw red squirrels in their garden whereas grey squirrels were seen in 73% of gardens. By taking part this year you can really help to expand the RSPB’s knowledge of wildlife in our country so they can do more to protect the most vulnerable species.

How can I help?Over the weekend of the 24th and 25th of January, pick an hour and tell the RSPB what you can see in your garden. Simply use the online bird watching tool at www.rspb.org.uk and record the birds directly as you see them on your computer.

If you’ve got bird food available in your garden at least a week before Birdwatch weekend you should be able to attract birds to your garden so you can take part.

Now the cold weather is upon us, you maybe preparing your car for winter. Did youknow that antifreeze can be deadly toour pets?

that your pet may have been exposedto antifreeze contact a vet as soon aspossible (even if they are showing nosymptoms). The sooner treatment is giventhe more likely it is to be successful.

Symptoms that may be seen includevomiting, loss of co-ordination and fits.Later on a fast heart rate and breathingproblems can be seen. Kidney failure is alsopossible and makes recovery much less likely.Unfortunately a lot of pets that are poisoned byantifreeze do not survive.

So, when handling antifreeze this winter pleasebe extremely careful to store it safely away frompets and clean up any spills immediately, makingsure no pets can access the area until clean.

Ethylene glycol (sometimes known as ethanediol) isfound in many products such as screen wash andbrake fluid as it prevents freezing. It is also found inengine coolants. It is a particularly high risk to pets

as it is very sweet tasting so they willreadily lick any spillages. Even asmall amount (especially in cats but itis also very toxic to dogs) can causesevere problems.

Be Inspired!As a child, Anne was mad on horses. Her

favourite book was ‘Wish for a Pony’, astory about a girl who wins a pony in araffle. Anne always wished that it was her

as she longed to have riding lessons but her parentscouldn’t afford it.

However, in her early 60s she saw a Horse Ridingfor Beginners course advertised in the Adult Learningbrochure and wondered whether this might be herchance at last! She was a little concerned about herage (and the fact that she wasn’t as supple as sheused to be) but after speaking to the tutor, Anne wasthrilled to learn that the course was suitable for allages and abilities.

Anne thoroughly enjoyed the six week course andlearnt about the horse, the theory as well as the actualriding. She said ‘The tutors were friendly and alwaysencouraging; they pointed out the improvementsthat you were making which really boosted myconfidence’.

History states that St Valentine’s Day is known tohave been an official ‘feast day’ in the AnglicanCommunion. Since the Middle Ages it has beenassociated with romance and love where lovers

presented gifts of flowers, chocolate and cards. Whatbetter way to express this than with these delicious redvelvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.For the Cupcakes• Preheat oven to 165C degrees. Line a muffin pan with 12

paper cases.• Mix flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt in

medium bowl. Set aside• Beat butter and sugar in large bowl with electric mixer

on medium speed 5 minutes until light and fluffy.• Beat in eggs, one at a time. Mix in soured cream, milk,

food colouring and vanilla.• Gradually beat in flour mixture on low speed until

blended. Do not over beat.• Spoon batter into cases, filling each 2/3 full.• Bake 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted into cupcake

comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire rack 10 minutes.Remove from pans, cool completely.

Cupcakes Ingredients(makes 12)150g plain flour20g unsweetened cocoa½ tsp baking powder½ tsp salt125g butter200g sugar2 eggs115g soured cream60ml milk5ml vanilla extract½ tsp of Red Extracolouring paste

Frosting Ingredients200g pack cream cheese75g butter125g icing sugar½ tsp vanilla extractFor the Frosting• In a medium bowl, cream together the cream cheese

and butter until creamy. Mix in the vanilla,gradually stirring the icing sugar.

T he Oldest purpose built garage in the UKhas re-opened in Towcester. The garage wasoriginally built in 1908 and was previously runby Ralph Kaby up until 2006.
