What a great time to be a Chamber member! Our lunch meeting attendance is hitting new record numbers every month and the buzz in the air continues to mount. If you missed the first of three Connect Over Coffee events, I would seriously consider making it a point to attend the next one. There were roughly 50 people in attendance, several of which I had never met or had not had a chance to connect with at other events. I personally took that opportunity to introduce myself and my business to many people, while learning more about some of our other members and what tools they use to succeed in business. As you evaluate your personal and professional goals for 2013 along with the track you are on thus far, I encourage you to examine how the Fenton Chamber can play a vital role in that plan. There are countless opportunities for net-working such as the lunch meetings, Connect Over Coffee breakfast networking and our upcoming Business After Hours. Many of our members take advantage of the wide range of marketing options within the Chamber, including sponsoring a monthly luncheon, volunteering at or sponsoring upcoming fundraisers or advertising in the monthly Fenton Focus Newsletter. Perhaps one of the best chances for you to promote your business is to participate in the Chamber‘s hugely successful Business & Community Fair coming up on May 29th at Rockwood Summit High School. As you can see, not only is there a plethora of ways to gain visibility in the community, but the Chamber also adds value to your membership by offering you tools to assist in obtaining your goals for this year. The fact that you can use Chamber Nation as a landing page for your website, build your own website within Chamber Nation and even offer coupons is amazing; and better yet, this technology is available to all Chamber Members! If you would like more training with this tool that drives the Chamber‘s website, consider joining us for the first of three webinars on Friday, March 1st from 12:30-2:30pm at Maryville University-Sunset Hills. For those of you that may need or want the help, the Chamber Office can help you at any time and will even create your coupon for a small fee. We also encourage you to download the Fenton Chamber App which is available across most mobile platforms. It‘s free, user-friendly and I can say that I use it often. As the Chamber has evolved to meet the needs of our members, we are now accepting online payment for membership dues, event registration and marketing opportunities! Considering all that the Chamber has to offer and the level of service committed to our members, it is wise for all of us to examine how we utilize every opportunity presented by the Fenton Chamber to play a role in the achievement of our business and personal goals. Together we can all succeed and remember, SHOP CHAMBER FIRST! Sincerely, Greg Bresler President-Fenton Chamber Area Chamber of Commerce General Manager-Andre‘s Banquet Facilities and Catering

Dennis Sommer, President & CEO, announced his retirement plans to the Alliance board a year ago. Sommer‘s last day at Alliance‘s Fenton Administrative Center will be March 1, 2013. His retirement ends a 40-year career in the credit union industry – 28 years as Alliance‘s President & CEO.

As he reflected upon his time at Alliance, Sommer said that he is most proud of the early years when he was challenged with steering the credit union through some significant problems that existed when he was hired. ―I truly appreciate the leadership opportunity that I was given, I‘ve tried to make the credit union the best that it could be,‖ Sommer said. ―I‘m happy to be leaving Alliance in excellent financial condition.‖

Sommer joined the credit union, then called Emerson Community Credit Union, in 1985 as President & CEO. At the time, the credit union had $18 million in assets and served about 9,000 members, the majority being employees of Emerson Electric. Today, Alliance has over $196 million in assets and serves more than 17,000 members. Alliance is the 11th largest credit union in Missouri.

Under Sommer‘s leadership, Alliance expanded from an employee-based credit union to one that extends membership to those who live or work in 4 Missouri counties and 4 Illinois counties. During his tenure, Alliance grew its branch offices from 1 to 6 locations. The credit union‘s growth has been driven by a full menu of financial services and market leading rates and terms on consumer loans, mortgage loans and business loans.

Sommer will be succeeded by Tim Stephens, Executive Vice President. Stephens is a 1990 graduate of Bradley University with more than 22 years of credit union experience. Stephens was President of Healthcare Family Credit Union for 14 years prior to joining Alliance‘s management team. He has been working closely with Sommer preparing for his transition to Chief Executive Officer.

Sommer said he has enjoyed his tenure at Alliance and very much appreciates all of the member support that he has received over the years. Sommer said that Cristina, his wife of 36 years, and he have a long bucket list of things to do now that he is retiring. First on his list is attending Cardinals spring training in Jupiter, Fla.

Emergency Communication Center Project Update Construction of the new Emergency Communications Center, located in Ohlendorf West Park, is scheduled for completion on June 30, 2013. The ECC will be the heart of public safety and health communications for more than 150 agencies responsible for coordinating help as quickly as possible for citizens in need, whether that "need" arises from a tornado, ice storm or earthquake. As part of the project, the Department of Parks and Recreation will make several improvements to Ohlendorf West Park for the benefit of neighbors and stakeholders.

Budget Update The County Council approved the county executive's recommended 2013 Budget last December. The budgeted funding for 2013 is $569,200,282. This budget will fund all operating departments of the county, highway capital projects, the Spirit of St. Louis Airport, debt service obligations, and pass-through taxes that are distributed to Metro from the Public Mass Transit Tax Fund. The budget does not include grant funds or trust and agency funds.

Proposition P: The Safe and Accessible Arch and Public Parks Initiative The St. Louis County Council in January unanimously approved legislation to place on the April 2, 2013 ballot the Safe and Accessible Arch and Public Parks Initiative, or Proposition P. The measure gives voters the opportunity to approve increasing the sales tax that currently supports the Great Rivers Greenway by 3/16 of one cent, or about 2 cents on a $10 purchase. The purchases of food and prescription drugs would be exempt from the proposed increase.

If approved, Prop P would raise about $31.4 million a year. Sixty percent of those funds (about $19 million) would go to Great Rivers Greenway for improvements to the Arch grounds, regional parks projects, and development of a system of trails and greenways. Forty percent (about $13 million) would go to St. Louis County and St. Louis City, with the County receiving $6 million for County parks and $4 million for municipal parks, and the City receiving about $3 million dedicated to local park improvements only. Voters must approve continuation of the tax after 20 years. (The preceding information was derived from multiple sources)

Xtreme Krav Maga is offering a FREE month of self defense classes to teachers and its newly added Women’s Only class on Tuesday’s from 6 – 7 pm at it’s Fenton location in Gravois Bluffs.

Krav Maga is the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, and has been taught to hundreds of law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians in the United States.

Classes for Women focus on rape prevention techniques and tactics. Learn to spot danger signs and learn how to defend yourself when no danger signs are given. This program teaches you how to defend yourself against common chokes, grabs, bear hugs, and other attacks, including fighting on the ground and when confronted by a weapon.

They emphasize realistic scenarios and realistic defenses. Krav Maga is based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self defense in the shortest possible time. Just as important, we teach people to function during the stress and shock of a sudden, violent encounter.

In January, the Fenton Kiwanis Club introduced a program called Terrific Kids. Each month, five students at Murphy Elementary in Fenton will be chosen by their teachers for demonstrating what it is to be a Terrific Kid.

According to Terrific Kids Representative, Brooke Karns, Fenton Kiwanis Board Member, the program has been a part of the Kiwanis organization for quite some time.

It focuses on character development and leadership skills while encouraging students to practice these skills inside the classroom. Terrific Kids doesn't necessarily reward the student with straight A‘s, but is geared towards identifying those students that have worked hard to improve in these areas.

Teachers select students who go above and beyond in the classroom and exemplify what it means to be a great leader to their peers.

Then, at the end of the month, students are ―pinned‖ as the Terrific Kid for their grade level. Five students (one from each grade level) will be mentioned at each monthly assembly, where they will be acknowledged in front of their peers and given a bag of goodies that includes a Terrific Kid certificate and pin, a yo-yo and free kids meal at Jilly‘s Café and Steakhouse. One of the most exciting things for these Terrific Kids is that they each will receive an honorable mention and photo in the paper so that they can share their achievement with family and friends.

This article and others can be found in The Fenton Current News Magazine, February 2013, Issue 1.

Jeannie,

In response to your wanting to hear about fellow chamber members, here’s a Toot of the Horn for Mark Sherman of Sherman Auto Sales, Inc.

Recently one of our Retirement Plan client’s health made a sudden turn for the worse and the Trustee was in need of help. We got Mark involved because there were antique Studebaker cars that needed to be sold. He did a great job evaluating the situation for our client and he even purchased one for his business. There was also an extensive collection of very old camera equipment and Mark was able to refer our client on to another source to help in this matter as well.

Needless to say, the Trustee was very pleased and so are we. Thanks, Mark, for the great service that you provided to our client and the Trustee!
