Are you ready for some football? As many of

you are aware, I am a huge football fan! And this is without a doubt the best time of year for ALL football fans. You are full of excitement and anticipation, but most of all HOPE. Everybody starts out with the same clean record, last year’s disappointing losses are behind you, your star players are healed up and ready to take the field. Paul is a loyal Cleveland Browns fan (stop laughing at him), and I can’t help but smile each year when I hear him saying things like, “This is our year.” “I think we are going to be tough this year.” He never gives up believing that his team will one day be great again. Now, in Paul’s case, it doesn’t usually take long for his team to let him down… but I love that optimism that never fails to return each August. Last Friday we went to the opening season game of the Tavares Bulldogs. As a family, we are happy to all finally have ONE football team that we can all agree to support! I have to admit that I haven’t been to a high school football game since I graduated from West Orange High (Class of ’93). There really is nothing quite like high school football, especially in a small town. The marching band rocked and the team was pumped up and played hard (and beat Umatilla 46-3). Classmates showed their team pride, wearing the red and black, sometimes even with painted faces and bodies! It was really fun and we are looking forward to the rest of the season. I encourage all of our readers to get out and support your local high school football teams... it’s an experience you never get too old to enjoy!Whoever you stand up and cheer for, here’s to an exciting and safe football season! Go Cowboys!!! …. And Bulldogs!

A rainy afternoon did not deter Tavares residents from enjoying the Art Around Town Art Stroll in downtown

Tavares on Friday, August 20, from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM. This summer’s art stroll was presented by the Business Development Committee of the Tavares Chamber of Commerce. Art Around Town featured a variety of local artists displaying their work at eighteen businesses along Main Street and Ruby Street.

Many businesses provided hors d’oeuvres and entertainment to accompany the artwork on display. In conjunction with the Art Around Town event the City of Tavares held an opening reception for Art in the Square, “Wild Art by Wild Artists” in Tavares City Hall. The works by local artists will remain on display in Tavares City Hall through October 29th, 2010 and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of artworks will go to

a charity of the buyer’s choice.

Local business owners considered the Art Around Town event more successful than they anticipated.

Rodger Kooser of AL’S Landing said the art stroll was “an absolutely phenomenal success.” Photographer Marc Vaughn was one of the featured artists at AL’S, his “Portraits of a Small Town” collection features Mount Dora residents in a variety of settings.

Other featured artists included ink and watercolor artist Mary Ramirez at the Law Office of Judy Stewart, Florida landscape artist Lynn Herrick at Tavares Antique Mall, and sculptor Austin Clay at the Lucky Dog Gallery Café. Pete Napoles, co-owner of the Lucky Dog Gallery Café said “The artists were incredibly happy with the

turnout.” Napoles added “The art stroll was surprisingly more successful than I

would have anticipated. It shows we can do something like this again and be successful.” Napoles participated in organizing Art Around Town and is an organizer for the upcoming Tavares Youth Art Show on September 30th, hosted by the Lucky Dog Gallery Café and presented by Tavares High School Art Department.

if you live or work in Mount Dora you may have noticed unusual occurrences in the month of August. Film crews and

actors swarmed the town to begin filming the Christian youth action-adventure movie “Ryann Watters and the King’s Sword” based on the book of the same name by local author Eric Reinhold.

Scenes were filmed at downtown locations First Presbyterian Church, The Sweet Shoppe, Timeless Keepsakes, Garden Gate, and the Lakeside Inn, among others. Palm Island Park and Gilbert Park were also settings for the fantasy world of Aeliana sequences.

On August 10th TYG Studios presented a special book and movie signing session and meet and greet hosted by the Lakeside

Inn. In the inn’s beautiful lobby author Eric Reinhold was on hand to sign his “Annals of Aeliana” books. Orlando actress Erin Bethea signed DVDs of the movie “Fireproof,” in which she costarred with actor Kirk Cameron. Bethea is a special guest star in the Ryann Watters film, portraying the mother of Liddy Thomas.

At the meet and greet the cast enjoyed a break from filming and signed autographs for local fans. Justin Taubensee of Orlando plays title character Ryann Watters. Justin said “So far my favorite part [of filming] has been jumping into the lake. It wasn’t really the lake, it was big plastic tubes.” Justin remarked on the friendly reception he has received

in Mount Dora. “I love this town, I want to live here,” he said. Costarring with Justin in the movie are Taylor Boswell of Orlando in the role of Liddy Thomas, Myles Jackson of Jacksonville in the role of Terell Peterson, and Daniel Bell of Melbourne, who plays Ryann’s nemesis Drake Dunfellow.

The South Lake community kicked off the 2010-2011 school year with their traditional Teacher Appreciation

Breakfast on August 19th. The event was held in the Wesley Center at the First United Methodist Church. The fun began at 7 am with over 650 of Lake County teachers, from all levels, in attendance. The customary festivities included a hearty breakfast, prepared by a team of volunteers, speeches by School Board Officials, and recognition of many outstanding teachers. Another time-honored tradition, and audience favorite, at the breakfast is the door prizes! Each teacher received a goodie-bag, along with a chance to win one of the over 200 door prizes which were donated by local businesses. Teachers of the Year from the 2009-2010 school year and Rookie Teachers of the Year were honored on stage with cash

prizes. The annual breakfast is a joint venture hosted by the South Lake Chamber, Pig on the Pond and the Community Foundation. The event is made possible by the multitude of volunteers who help put it together each year, as well as the support of the local businesses who make generous donations to show their thanks to this amazing group of educators.

Tim Murray saw the need for a fun, safe place for children in the South Lake area along with Kendal Anderson,

pastor of The Crossing Church, who hosted luncheons in the community, Deb Steinmetz who set up fundraising events and Michelle Michnoff as well as numerous other community leaders who volunteered to be on the steering committee. Over 2 years ago, it was decided to bring the Club to the area for after school care from 2-6PM. During the summer the goal is to have it open from 7-6pm which helps many parents. They are currently taking elementary to middle school children ages 5-14 years old. This exciting program has opened in a shared large warehouse in Clermont Commons that

provides games, computers, tutoring after school, thanks to a partnership with Sylvan Learning Center. They have converted offices into classrooms and have a basketball court and pool tables in a large activity center. It gives parents a safe place to take their children. It is open to everyone and has economical rates and scholarships available to those who qualify. It took 2 years to raise the funds to open and they started with $105,000 that has been raised so far. There is a need for volunteers who have a passion to helping kids flourish in a safe environment. Donations for furniture, game tables or cash are needed. so many traits of our human organic being are taken for granted, and it isn’t until one or more of those

features are hindered, do we appreciate what we had relied upon. Each of our senses, whether sight, sound, taste, touch or smell, and even our mental faculties mold who we are, and how we get along in the environment around us, however, the loss of one or more traits presents challenges as we face the greater world around us. Most of the world is geared for populations, which operate with all human faculties present. Parents and caregivers are left to make decisions about the lives of their loved ones, and to assemble a life as close to quality as possible. Caregivers want to provide the best accommodations that will afford the most comprehensive therapy to aid abilities either lost or undeveloped so their charge lives the most quality existence in today’s world. Mount Dora is home to a facility that focuses on the psychiatric and educational needs of the deaf and hard-of-hearing, who may also be diagnosed with a mental health deficiency. Business Development Director, Joey Trapani explained further, “The National Deaf Academy is a unique residential experience for individuals who suffer from mental health related diagnosis whom are either Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or have been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum.”

Dr. Alan Cohen established the National Deaf Academy in 2000, in answer to the dissatisfaction that resulted in the attempt to “mainstream” Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals. Much is lost in the attempted transitions of

communication because of “linguistic and cultural barriers” that these populations experience. In order to place everyone on the same starting blocks, American Sign Language (ASL) is the primary language used on campus and communication across the board relies upon this language. Of the over two hundred employees at NDA, seventy percent are Deaf, and everyone working with residents is required to know ASL, or become proficient signers. It is ideal for the psychiatrists to know ASL so that, “Each resident at NDA has the unique experience of receiving one-on-one care of a psychiatrist who speaks their language, or is able to accommodate their communication deficiency,” says Trapani. The more individual attention a resident gets, the closer they are to growing and gaining more independence than they enrolled with. The numbers of children diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum have increased to 1:110. Some of these cases manifest communication in the form of negative behavior, but learning ASL helps redirect previous conduct, and provides more productive therapy sessions.

The National Deaf Academy is complex in its many facets, as it is designed to adapt residents to a more independent and advanced lifestyle. Each staff member at NDA has an important role in changing the lives of many, through their unique contributions. Trapani grew up communicating in ASL, as his parents were both deaf. He originally went to college for an education degree, but ended up wanting to work in business and marketing. When he found NDA, “It combined my experience in education, the deaf world, and marketing – it was

a really good fit.” Others, like Medical Director, Dr. Maxine Minto completed her fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL, and her ability to use ASL with her patients greatly helps to slow their negative behavior, and assists in improving their psychiatric development. One of the key points of NDA’s vision is to, “Develop innovative treatment models that utilize the most dedicated, highly educated and well-trained staff available,” and each staff member comes to the table with their own story for making this vision possible. Director of Education, Mary Augustyn brings over twenty years experience as a deaf educator to NDA. Since there is a wide milieu of residents from children to adults that may have never gotten the education they needed, the “NDA and The Preparatory School work as partners to provide quality mental health care and K-12 special education services to all NDA residents under 22 years of age who have not graduated from high school.” Through the Preparatory School and several specialized programs, including a transitional unit designed to help those who still require supervision gain vocational skills and independence; the NDA addresses this diverse population like no other organization.

Around Lake County, the NDA’s “business development and marketing department can assist both lay and professional organizations in determining the best way for our highly trained staff and unique facility to be of benefit to you and your organization.” NDA’s Trapani sits on the Board of Directors for the Mount Dora Center for the Arts,

and keeps up community involvement with sponsorships like the Mount Dora Art Festival, and the 2010 Mount Dora Police and Fire Department Golf Tournament. Hosted by the Country Club of Mount Dora, the tournament raised $7500. NDA successfully hosted the Chamber’s Business After Hours meeting in August. CEO, Deana Goldstein expresses her part in this incredible community, and what rewards her in her heart. “I came to work at the National Deaf Academy because I saw it as a great opportunity to provide mental healthcare and an education to underserved populations; the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and those on the Autism Spectrum. I work with professionals who are passionate about their work and committed to promoting independence, improved communication, and increased skill building for all the residents at NDA.”

It’s a long process. Now that my knee is getting better, I’m able to get back into a more active lifestyle, it’s just taking me a little longer. There are approximately 600,000 hysterectomies performed in the United States annually. Th e latest statistics

report that approximately 60% are performed abdominally. An abdominal hysterectomy involves making an incision in the abdomen of about 8 inches and results in a hospital stay of two to three days with a four week recovery period until a return to normal activities.

Th ere are various indications for hysterectomy with the most common being uterine fi broids which are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. Uterine fi broids are present in approximately 20-30% of women and may cause heavy menstrual bleeding with cramping, irregular bleeding, pelvic pain and painful intercourse.

Th e DaVinci robotic total laparoscopic hysterectomy allows patients to have a minimally invasive operation that accomplishes the same outcome as compared to traditional open surgery. Th ere are 5 very small incisions which results in much less pain postoperatively. Patients typically go home within 23 hrs and some may be sent

home the same day as surgery. Th e majority of patients feel well enough to return to work in 7-10 days.

Ellipticals and treadmills are two of the most popular pieces of exercise equipment on the market. While

treadmills are still the number one exercise equipment and the most common form of physical activity among people who exercise regularly, ellipticals are gaining popularity quickly. But have you ever wondered is one of these devices is better than the other one when it comes to cardiovascular and fi tness benefi ts?

When comparing treadmills versus ellipticals, one of the most remarkable diff erences is the low joint impact ellipticals off er. Th is advantage makes the elliptical

one of the best choices for older people or for individuals who are recovering from a joint injury and is one of the favorite rehabilitation exercise pieces of equipment to have. It is also a great choice for those who don’t necessary need to simulate walking or jogging but want to still get the cardiovascular benefi ts of aerobic training. Furthermore, due to the low impact nature, many who exercise perceive their workout as being more eff ortless on an elliptical.

Another element that separates the elliptical from the treadmill is the option of experiencing a total body workout when using dual action handlebars. Th us, changing the intensity and incline is not

the only variety you can get, but the dual actions handlebars can add more to the upper body as well. Ellipticals also off er the option of pedaling forward or in reverse motion choosing to work specifi c muscle groups such as the quadriceps, hamstrings, hips and calves.

In contrast, serious joggers or runners would rather workout on the treadmill because of the specifi city of their training and the realistic running experience it off ers. However, since treadmills off er mainly a lower body workout, those using a treadmill would have to work their upper body carrying weights and swinging arms while jogging or walking. Th e treadmill’s variety comes from changing the speed and incline. However, it is diffi cult to achieve a reverse motion and to work specifi c muscle groups unlike the elliptical trainer.

According to a study published by the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, eighteen healthy males and females with no history of participation in structured strength or aerobic training volunteered to participate in an experiment. Th e purpose was to investigate energy

expenditure, heart rate and oxygen consumption during a single session of exercise on an elliptical and a treadmill. Surprisingly, the fi ndings suggested that using the elliptical as an element of an aerobic training program will provide the same stimulus for developing cardiovascular fi tness as using a treadmill.

If your biggest challenge is to stay motivated and interested in your workouts, using the elliptical can be a great way for increasing the amount of calories burned, for producing cardio respiratory health and for training benefi ts. Th erefore, for runners, triathletes and experienced and novice people that are looking for some variety in their training program, don’t worry about it! You will still get the same exercise stimulus and adaptations whether you work on a treadmill or an elliptical. What it comes down to be is personal preference. Whether you chose to workout on a treadmill or an elliptical trainer, you will not go wrong; just pick the one that is more comfortable and enjoyable to you!!

gUarDianship fOr mY elDerlY parenTsyour elderly Mother previously went

to an attorney and had “all” of the documents drafted and executed when

she was competent for a future time in case she becomes incompetent; the plan was to allow you, the adult child, to care for her. She properly executed a Durable Power of Attorney (“DPOA”), giving you the ability to take care of many legal affairs and manage her possessions, that is, her “property.” Your Mother also properly executed a Designation of Health Care Surrogate (“DHCS”) form, giving you the ability to make health care decisions for her in the event that she becomes incompetent. She even properly created a Revocable Trust, which may also allow you to manage her property. Since your elderly Mother took the time and care to have these documents in place, will you, the adult child, still need to seek a court Order naming you the Guardian of your Mother? Maybe. Maybe? Yes, that is the typical attorney answer, avoiding the clear cut yes or no. It’s aggravating but unfortunately, many times there are just no black and white answers.

With the proper documents, it may not be necessary to seek a court Order naming you the Guardian over your Mother’s “property,” however, you may need to seek the court’s intervention and ask to be named the Guardian of the person, the body, of your Mother. A DPOA can be created to come into effect immediately or to come into effect only upon one being declared incompetent. Although the DPOA and a Revocable Trust may allow you to control or manage your Mother’s property, such documents do not allow you to control your Mother’s “person.” Also, the DHCS is limited to health care and to those times when your Mother has actually been “declared incompetent.” Without being declared incompetent, your Mother has full right to make health care decisions on her own. By now you are starting to pick-up on the word “declared.” For many documents and legal functions to take effect, a person must be “declared” incompetent before the documents can be used. In most cases, only a court or doctors will be able to “declare” a person incompetent. And, since in general it must be declared that one is incompetent, many third parties such as health care workers

and banks refuse to acknowledge the DPOA or DHCS; and for good reason, it can mean legal trouble for the third party.

Another problem seems to lie with how third parties view your elderly Mother and how she views herself, such as her refusing to believe that she needs your help beyond that of the normal helpful child. Sometimes, being elderly is just that, elderly; there may be some memory loss or just obnoxious behavior but just because your elderly Mother does not want to do what you recommend or tell her to do does not mean that she incompetent. However, there are other times when an elderly person does have dementia or other form of mental impairment beyond that of the normal aging process. The tricky part is trying to figure it out on your own; it is especially true if the dementia is in the beginning stages: Sometimes Mom is okay and sometimes she is not. When Mom is “okay” or at least has periods of being “okay” it can be frustrating trying to get the doctors or others to see that your Mother truly does need your assistance, as she may seem okay in the presence of nonfamily members or others who do not

know her as well.

Even if your elderly Mother planned ahead and had “all of the documents”, you may still need the court’s help to become the Guardian over your Mother’s “person” in order to make decisions for her such as where your Mother is going to live. Your Mother may have previously designated who she desires to be her Guardian, both over her person and/or over her possessions, by executing a “Declaration Naming Pre-Need Guardian” (“Pre-Need Declaration”). Although the court does not have to abide by the Declaration, it is given consideration and can be used to assist the court in the event a Guardianship of your elderly Mother is needed. A Pre-Need Declaration alone, without a court Order, does not make you a Guardian. Therefore, although you may have “all” of the documents, you may still need the Court’s help in order to be the Guardian over your elderly Mother’s person. So, the answer to the initial question remains, “maybe.”

laKesiDe Delifor nearly eight years, the Lakeside

Deli has been serving up delicious, homemade soups, salads, and

sandwiches in the heart of Eustis. Th e downtown deli is owned and operated by Michael Sayre and is located just a short walk from the pier that juts out over Lake Eustis. Sayre has twenty-seven years in the restaurant business, honing his skill in everything from barbecue to fi ve star cuisine. He is originally from Denver, Colorado and graduated from

the Scottsdale Culinary Institute in 1989. Sayre was drawn to Lake County and specifi cally Eustis for its “friendly, hometown atmosphere.”Sayre claims his forte is Italian and Cajun cuisine, specializing in soups, stocks, and sauces. His mother is from New Orleans, and this infl uence is apparent, especially in the tasty Muff alettas on the menu. Other popular choices include the Reuben, the Chicken Salad (which some claim is the best in Lake County), the Chicken

Quesadilla, and the Chicken Panini (grilled chicken, tomato, spinach, and provolone). Th e large combo subs and the hearty Cobb Salad are also amongst the customer’s most raved about items. On our tasting, we started out with the homemade Italian Vegetable Soup. Available daily, the robust soup was full of chunky seasonal vegetables, including yellow squash, zucchini, broccoli, caulifl ower, ground beef, and Italian Sausage in a tomato based sauce. Th is is one of their staple soups, for good reason, along with their White Chicken Chili and Red Beanless Chili. Monday the featured soup is Lobster Bisque, Wednesday’s special is Broccoli Cheese, and Friday cooks up Rock Shrimp and Crab Bisque (you just might run into me there on Friday). All of the ingredients Sayre uses in his food preparation are chosen for their freshness, from the breads to the produce, which comes from local produce suppliers. Th e quality of the ingredients is apparent in our tasting. We followed the delicious soup with a simple, but perfect, roast beef sandwich. Th e newly-baked bread embraced the thin slices of roast beef, topped with tomato and lettuce. All sandwiches are made to order, with your choice of toppings, as well as type of bread (White, Wheat, Sourdough, Light Rye, Marble Rye, Dark Rye, or Croissant). For those with an appetite, the Taco Salad

will not disappoint. Th e perfectly seasoned ground beef (or chicken), lettuce, tomato, black olives, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and salsa were served in a crispy tortilla shell. Most of the Lakeside Deli’s menu choices are under $6, even with the recent increases in the cost of food. Sayre has tried his hardest to continue to serve fi lling portions, healthy food (nothing fried except the French fries), at a reasonable price during these economically challenged times. Th ere is even a Happy Hour from Noon to 1pm each day, where customers can enjoy two-for-one beer and wine. Th e Lakeside Deli is closed on the weekends to free up Sayre for the other side of the business, Presentation Catering. He is equipped to handle any type of catering job up to two hundred guests and has an off site liquor license. The incredibly popular annual Casino Night was hosted by the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce on Saturday,

August 28th at Lake Receptions. This was the fourth year the event has been held and

it continues to be a sold out event. The red and black themed evening combined good food and gambling, with the musical stylings of the Mount Dora Jazz Orchestra streaming in the background.

“Gamblers” could use their casino cash and try their luck at the Vegas-Style table games, such as Black Jack, Roulette, Texas Hold ‘Em, or Craps. Winnings were cashed in for raffle drawing tickets. One lucky event ticket holder, George Maines, won the $1500 cash prize!

The Mount Dora Casino night is a fundraising effort for the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce. The event is made possible by sponsors: The Daily
