Art Around Town is a unique art stroll being presented by the Tavares Chamber of Commerce Business
Development Committee. Artists will be located in 18 businesses allowing the public to “stroll” down Main
and Ruby Streets to view a variety of artwork. As part of the Art Around Town event, the City of Tavaes will be
opening its reception of Art in the Square at City Hall at 201 E. Main Street. Several of the downtown businesses
will have food and entertainment throughout the evening.

Some of you already know this about me or have heard me tell this story… but I feel it is worth retelling. Three years
ago, when we first looked at locations to start a new edition of FOCUS Magazine, we immediately looked at North Lake County. I was familiar with, and loved, Mount Dora, having frequented Renninger’s since I was a teenager and often visiting the quaint downtown shops and restaurants. I had even been to Leesburg a time or two. However, Eustis and Tavares were both foreign to me. I had heard of them, but had never been there and couldn’t have named one thing they had to offer. I had no idea how quickly that would change.Fast forward a few months and an opportunity presented itself for us to open an office in downtown Tavares. I remember the day my business partner, Dina, called to tell me about it. She was very excited and thought being right on Main Street was an excellent opportunity. I remember questioning, “ But Tavares?” (without much enthusiasm). It didn’t take long for any skepticism to disappear. We were welcomed to the downtown like you would never believe. City officials and other business owners stopped by just to say hello and let us know how happy they were that we had chosen Tavares. Our ribbon cutting drew nearly 80 people from the Triangle area, all eager to show their support. It was overwhelming!As the magazine has grown, so has our involvement in the community. The small town atmosphere really started to create a yearning for both Paul and I. He grew up in a small town in Ohio where everybody knew your name and my own family had multi-generational roots in Winter Garden, where I grew up most of my life. Somewhere along the line, we looked at each other and decided it was time to move; we wanted Dylan to experience some of what we had both grown up with.In some unbelievable, fate-like way, we sold our Orlando area home the day it went on the market (seriously) and the first house our realtor, Rick Gonzalez, showed me was “the one.” I am very excited to say that I am officially a Tavares homeowner and can’t help but reflect on the journey that has led us here. For those of you that live here, I hope you know to never take it for granted! The beautiful lakes, quaint downtowns, and warm-hearted, friendly residents make this a truly unique community and we are proud to call it HOME.

lisa hargrove-WoodcoMMunity rallies to help one of their own
In a moment, a local family’s life was changed forever. After suffering from a headache, 42-year-old Lisa Hargrove-
Wood drove herself to the emergency room at Florida Hospital Waterman for treatment. Within a couple of hours she was airlifted
from the Tavares hospital to downtown Orlando for brain surgery. The doctors had discovered three brain tumors, one of which needed to be operated on immediately, located at the base of the brain stem. While the surgery was labeled “successful,” Lisa’s fight was just beginning. There were still two
remaining tumors. As testing continued, the doctors discovered this young wife and mother’s body had cancer spread throughout.
Lisa was sixteen years old when her family moved to Lake County. She is a graduate of Tavares High School and currently resides in Tavares with her husband, Matt Wood, an Apopka police officer, and their fifteen year old daughter, Chelsey. Her mother, Sherrie Hargrove, sister, Laura Hargrove of G&H Law in downtown Tavares, and her brother Jason Hargrove and his family all still live in Tavares.
Although both Lisa and her husband are employed full time, Lisa does not have health insurance. The medical bills, combined with household bills, have quickly become
overwhelming in an already unbearable experience. Upon hearing of the family’s plight, many members of the community have stepped up to offer their assistance. On Saturday, July 31st, a benefit was held at Cousin Vinnie’s in Leesburg with Vinnie donating a percentage of the night’s sales to the family. Other local restaurants have already volunteered to follow in Vinnie’s steps with additional benefit nights. Items are being gathered for auction, also.
A trust has been set-up to help Lisa and her family: the Lisa R. Hargrove-Wood Family Trust. For anyone wishing to help this local family in need, deposits can be made at United Southern Bank, 1303 North New Hampshire Avenue, Tavares, Florida, or any other United Southern Bank branch.

For the unacquainted, social media is information broadcasted over social interaction channels such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc. This information includes text, images, video and music. Many social media experts stress the importance of businesses incorporating this type of media into their marketing mix. While many business owners and CEOs have taken this advice to heart, many more still have lingering questions about the efficacy of marketing via these channels and wonder if the ROI justifies the investment of time necessary to establish and maintain a presence on them. To understand why social media works, we must first understand that advertising has evolved from being primarily interruption-based to being permission-based. That is, tech-savvy consumers have become increasingly skilled at blocking unwanted messages. An advertiser’s best hope of reaching a potential customer in 2010 is to reach them with a message that is relevant to their needs and helps them solve a problem. Undoubtedly, the biggest mistake I see advertisers make
in social media is to have one-sided conversations with their customers. Social media channels are not virtual bullhorns on which to broadcast your company’s sales pitches. These channels are designed for conversation and interactivity. Customers have become accustomed to speaking to companies or their representatives directly, getting prompt answers to their questions and having their opinions taken into consideration. The companies having the greatest success with social media are those who solve problems for their customers, solicit and act on feedback from their customers and who reward them for their loyalty.
In a recent word association study, do you know which word was most associated with the word “advertising”? It was the word “false”. Consumers no longer trust the word of advertisers. They do, however, trust the word of their friends and family. This is a psychological phenomenon known as “social proof ”. By establishing and maintaining a presence on social media channels and by producing easily shareable content that your loyal customers can pass on to friends and family, you not only build awareness but also put your company in the best possible position to gain the trust of potential new customers.
Before entering into the social media realm, you should develop a strategy that targets your primary demographic. You should also be realistic about the amount of resources you will be able to dedicate to engaging with customers via these channels. Having a presence across several social media channels is the best way to ensure that you’re reaching as many potential customers as possible but if your time is limited, you’re better off focusing on one channel and using it to its fullest than establishing a presence on several channels and not interacting very much with your customers. Facebook is an extremely popular social media channel with over 400 million active users. With that many users, chances are that at least some of your target demographic is using that channel. However, if your company is primarily engaged in B2B activities, LinkedIn might prove to be a better investment of your time since that particular channel is more focused on targeting professionals. MySpace has fallen out of favor in recent years but if your target market is comprised of musicians, MySpace is still a viable channel on which to advertise and engage with potential customers. The key is to maximize the channel, or channels, most visited by your
demographic.
One of the biggest misunderstandings about social media is that it has “killed” traditional media. In reality, the best marketing plans incorporate a mix of the two. Social media marketing should complement your traditional media marketing, not replace it. A recent study suggests that nearly 40% of online searchers make a purchase after being influenced by an offline or traditional channel. In addition, Google now returns search results to users which include images and video, so producing more content that include these types of media can help increase your company’s ranking in the search engines.
For those who are still skeptical, know that there is great value in using social media as a tool for monitoring, as well as engagement. Simply listening to what your customers are saying about you and your competitors can be a great way to generate new ideas and meet your customers’ needs more effectively.

rejuvenate the body from the inside out. From the moment a patient steps in, the serenity of the sanctuary engulfs them. Throughout the office, are eclectic pieces of art, some are gifts, but all bring patients to understand that the beauty of life is attainable. Joanne M. Keller, ARNP, created her practice out of a desire to use an alternative, integrative and more holistic approach to men & women’s health. Conventional medicine works only so far in treatment, yet there is a vast array of alternative
health practices that educate patients in healing their own body. The practice is a dream come true for Keller, who is a firm advocate of patient involvement and education.
FOCUS: What initially opened your mind to other forms of health management?
Joanne Keller: I felt frustrated that all of the skills I had learned weren’t really helping people get well. The medications and the treatment plans that were standard conventional protocol were as far as you could get, and people were saying, ‘I just don’t feel good. I don’t know what it is. I’ve been to
every provider and all they tell me is they can’t find anything wrong’. The new knowledge I’ve been learning with functional medicine, attending seminars & conferences to self-learn things, allows me to pinpoint for people the underlying physiology that is causing their symptoms. By doing standard blood tests, but interpreting the results with the guidelines of functional medicine, I uncover what the problem is. The bottom line for me is that I want to educate patients on how to take care of themselves. If they are educated, then they become more invested in their own care and are more apt to participate more fully in their treatment program.
FOCUS: How did you come to the practice?
JK: I moved from Massachusetts in 1999 and I worked for a local internal medicine doctor for two years. And then I had a dream that I wanted my own place, so on August 13, 2001, I opened my own place. That practice was like any other providers’ office, you come in when you’re sick, you get prescriptions, that whole thing. But my love has always been alternative, integrative and more holistic. So I did see that there was an answer to giving people drugs, so in 2005, I started focusing really strongly on whole food and nutrition. So when
I introduced Juice Plus+, whole food concentrate into the practice it became almost like the first commitment to the patient to say, ‘we’re going to get rid of the old way and we’re going to look at trying to prevent you from breaking down so that you don’t have this mentality of going to a doctor only when it’s broken, that you can come to a wellness place that you can learn how to prevent this from happening. And so, fast forward two more years, I started seeing my patient base deteriorate because the patients had stopped getting sick. That became the motivator for our current wellness center.
FOCUS: What is a typical visit like?
JK: The first question I ask of each new patient is, do you have the intention to become well? I point blank ask them because they have to honor mind, body and spirit. Their mind has to be ready to be well. Being a nurse practitioner is all about prevention. That is my forte. I teach patients that if they go somewhere else for medical care, they need to be able to self-advocate. That’s why we take our time in our visits. They are personalized & educational. Patients don’t ever feel rushed. There is never a time where they can’t finish the end of their checklist. And I always ask, is there anything else we need to talk about? They say no, and

I love that. What I find that most people want is for someone to truly listen to them. And so I felt like if I would just listen, then I will be known for that person that listens.
FOCUS: How do you image that carrot of a healthier life?
JK: People come in with multiple problems, and sometimes they just love talking about being sick, that’s their payoff. I let them unload that and then I ask them if it would be ok if they never tell that story again. They sit back and ask, why? Because you are going to have a new story, that part of your past has not served you well. It’s the whole psychology part of nursing. That’s what makes this practice so unique. I am paying attention to that kind of stuff. We can’t work together unless you have the desire to become well and have that commitment. When you are well, what is that world going to look like for you? If I can give them that vision of wellness, they don’t have to stay on this continuum of sick/better, but that they can go from better to well. What if you knew what it would be like not to be in pain? And they say, ‘Oh my life would be…’ What? Fill in the gap. I’m leading them to develop a personal affirmation. When I’m not in pain, I’ll be able to do what? So then they begin building that dream vision board – that’s how they start building it. They affirm what they want for themselves. I am vibrant and alive!!
FOCUS: What does the future hold for your practice?
JK: We are physically adding on, and the expansion should be complete by the end of October. We’ll have a conference room where we will have group patient visits, to build support groups with the same group of men & women, to learn from each other. There will be a temperature controlled thermography room decorated with colorful thermal pictures of the body. Two rooms will be dedicated to detoxification. Spending time in the infrared sauna room causes the body to heat up and induces a therapeutic fever, helping the body detoxify heavy metals and toxins. After a shower, patients can move into the colon-hydrotherapy room designed for colonic therapy, accomplishing a total detoxification program for my patients.
FOCUS: What equipment has impacted your practice?
JK: We have exploded with the wellness
phase, because we have purchased a thermogram (DITI) machine, which is digital infrared thermal imaging. It is a way to scan the full body, specifically for women’s breasts without radiation, no contact, is absolutely safe, and it can detect changes in the breast two to five years sooner than a mammogram. I learned when I went to the training for thermography, that thermogram is the only diagnostic tool that can detect inflammatory breast cancer in women. Inflammatory breast cancer is the number one cause of death in young women. Thermograms are used as an adjunctive tool to mammograms. They work great for screening purposes. I often ask why would you screen a woman with radiation when you can use something else that doesn’t deliver radiation? I want to be part of the solution. My vision for the future is that we are going to see things like thermography be the screening tool of choice.
FOCUS: Biggest success?
JK: I feel like the biggest success has been taking the same caseload of patients I had nine years ago who were totally conventional and helping them transition into well patients. They were just as conventional as I was. Through my strong focus on nutrition and colon health, my patients stopped getting sick. The whole point in my life is I wanted to find my service. I’m doing what I know and love, and what I’m meant to do. If you enjoy running but you are looking for a little variety in your routine or if you are suffering an injury, pool running
is a great alternative. Not only can it help you beat the heat this summer but all of the various approaches to aqua jogging can be beneficial for further enhancing fitness or maintaining basic fitness levels during an injury. A significant amount of research studies has been done in support of pool running. It is quite amazing to know that if you are injured and have been sidelined from running you still have hope in the water. Listed below are a couple different approaches to aqua-jogging.
Basic Every Day Technique: This technique is to be used on steady pool runs and a majority of the time. The focus is on simulating the intensity of land running as opposed to exact form. Your knee will be kept relatively low. Regardless of your running form, your stride rate will not be as high as on land due to the extra drag.
However, your goal is to have as great of turnover as possible. You will be slightly bent forward at the waist yet relatively upright (no hunchbacks). You should have a slight tendency to move forward but not very quickly.
Research published from Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that your heart rate will drop 8-11 beats on average, and 16 beats for a maximum effort when compared to land running. It is safe to say your heart rates will be approximately 10 % lower in the water.
Advanced Technique Variations:
Full Running Cycle:Your goal is to look like an Olympic sprinter in slow motion under water. You want to reach with the lead leg and pull it through the water strongly and evenly. You will need to be very aware of your movements and actively pull your trail
leg forward. This is a very challenging movement as it takes much focus initially. It helps to visualize your foot striking the ground slightly in front of you and flex the foot at the time of push-off. Keep your arms by your side moving back and forth…..not across your body. It helps to start this form of aqua jogging with a belt on and then transition to no belt.
High Knees: For this technique, focus on driving the lead leg up as high as possible (at least hip level). Slightly lean forward and the arms need to be very active. Your legs will land directly underneath you.
Snapback Stride: Focus more on the pull through of the leg. The trailing leg will be strongly curled back to reduce the force needed to bring it forward.
Try to prevent bobbing or backward movement. This indicates improper movement patterns. The increase in resistance of the water will highlight any mechanical deficiencies in your running. For example, if you have a flip kick when you run, your first few runs in the pool could leave you with sore ankles due to this gait flaw. I point this out only so that you may focus on your mechanics especially when you first begin.
Intervals are the most effective tool in water running to maintain your fitness. You do not have the same wear and tear on the body as you do on land so it is very safe. It also passes time and is a great way to put variety in your workout. So find a pool, hop in and start running!

So, your son or daughter has just turned 18 years old, a “new” adult. Turning 18, the “age of majority”
in Florida, is one of many milestones to come and is generally when one legally becomes an adult. A person under 18 can become an adult via a legal process called “emancipation.” Emancipation is not exactly an easy process, however, once completed the minor, regardless that he is under the age of 18, will also be an adult without the benefit of being protected under the laws as a minor. Parents and new adults should be aware that along with the joys of being an adult, there are many new legal responsibilities.
What can new adults do? Well, they are still legally too young to drink alcohol, as you must be 21 years old in Florida. However, the new adult may now vote, enter into contracts, make a Last Will and Testament, consent to medical treatment without the approval of the parent and may live independently, outside of the parent’s control. Sounds great. BUT, slow down,
stop and think. The new adult will also be responsible and charged as an adult for any crimes he commits, even if they are with their buddies who are still only 16 or 17 years old. Although minors could be charged as an adult depending on the seriousness of the crime, what may be a slap on the wrist for the 17 year old for “kids horsing around” may end up being big trouble for the new adult, leading to a criminal record which can follow the new adult around for the rest of his life. For example, illegally setting off a fire extinguisher could actually lead to felony charges. Additionally, the new adult is also now required to support himself as it is no longer the parents legal responsibility unless there is a court order stating otherwise. For the 18 year old new adult, males must also register for the selective service.
Just because a new adult “can buy a car” without the parent’s consent, does not mean he should not seek the parents advise. New adults may not always be experienced enough to understand that
buying a car is a legal contract, binding, with legal ramifications. The new adult can sue on his own behalf and be sued. Samples of the types of contracts a new adult can enter into when just a day earlier he could not included school loans, car loans, employment contracts and rental contracts. The new adult needs to know that to be legally binding, some contracts may be verbal with nothing in writing. Whether written or verbal, the new adult needs to be sure that he understands the terms of what is expected of him prior to entering into the contract.
The new adult also needs to understand what it is to have “good” credit and the importance of good credit. Unfortunately, many new adults enter into car contracts
and credit card contracts without the experience necessary to understand the full responsibilities, having ruined their credit ratings while still in their teens! Bad credit can often take 5 to 7 years to clear up, sometimes even longer. Fortunately, there are ways in which the new adult can start building good credit: Working, paying bills on time, starting a savings account and using credit cards wisely.
New adults should enjoy their new found “freedom” but understand that with freedom comes responsibility.

The same holds true for a real estate company…that is they should strive to be better not bigger.So, in selecting the right Realtor for you, consider what is truly important, not just the size of the organization he/she works under.Real Estate: Choosing the Right Agent Finding the right real estate agent to help you with your home sale or purchase is everything. Partnerships Are Not EternalUnlike a corporation, a partnership does not have an unlimited life. When a partner dies, the remaining partners legally become liquidation trustees. This obligates them to sell off the deceased owner’s share of the business. But to whom? At what price? That’s why business succession planning is so important. You’ll want to put into writing a formal plan of action that will allow a smooth transition of ownership and protect your family’s interest as well. A buy-sell agreement is one way to help assure the continuity of your business and give your family peace of mind.
Benefits of a Buy-Sell AgreementSometimes called a “business will,” a buy-sell agreement is a legal contract among business owners that states what will happen should a partner leave the business due to death, disability, or a lifetime situation such as retirement. The agreement obligates the remaining owners to purchase the business interest of the partner who has left the business, and the departing partner (or heirs) is obligated sell. This type of arrangement benefits your family in a number of ways: it will help free them of business worries at a time of crisis, guarantee a purchaser, and, if kept up-to-date, ensure a fair price for your business interests. Remaining owners also benefit from a buy-sell agreement: they know the
purchase price of the business interests in advance; they don’t have to worry about new, perhaps unwanted partners; and the smooth transition will help the company retain the confidence of clients and creditors. With the help of an attorney, these agreements are easy to draft and flexible, allowing for alterations with the consent of all parties involved.
How You Can Fund Your PlanOnce a buy-sell agreement is in place, the next challenge is funding it. Where will remaining partners get the funds to purchase the business interest in question? There are a number of available options:
• PayCash-Ifsufficientfundsareonhand, cash may be used to purchase the business interest in question. However, using savings that were earmarked for future ventures could endanger the long-term goals of the business.• TakeALoan-Ifcashisnotreadilyavailable, funds could be borrowed. The downside is that the extra expense of loan repayments may put a strain on cash flow and the debt increase may negatively affect the company’s credit rating.• SellAssets-Anotheralternativeisliquidating assets to raise the money. This method could have a devastating effect on the business’s future, and should be considered only as a last resort.
The Sensible SolutionIt becomes clear that a proper funding vehicle is needed to make a buy-sell agreement as effective as possible. With its many advantages, insurance can be a convenient means to fund the agreement without incurring a large financial burden. Insurance creates a guaranteed source of funds to purchase the business interest in question. Proceeds are immediately available exactly when they are needed: in the event of the death or disability of the insured. In effect, it could be said that the cause that creates the need also creates the funding. Those proceeds are, in most instances, free from federal income tax,
and may help avoid the delays of probate. A buy-sell agreement funded by insurance may be structured in a number of different ways to suit particular needs.
Now’s the TimeIt’s best to consider your options now while you’re still in the position to direct your business. Speak with your partners and your family, as well as your legal and tax advisors and your insurance agent. If you’re like most business owners, your business and your family are the two most important things in life. You don’t want to gamble with the future of either one. A
buy-sell agreement funded by insurance is a convenient way to put your business affairs in order while protecting your family’s interests. It can give you the peace of mind you need to focus your energies on the continued success of your firm.

Lake County’s SMS Productions has a unique philosophy when it comes to promoting local musicians. “We find out
what the artist wants and we promote them,” said Susan Snell of SMS. “We want to help
local artists move up a notch.”
Founder Steve Ellis began his career in the music industry as a sound engineer for local artists and venues. He soon moved into management and promotion when he
discovered there was a need; many of the talented musicians in Lake County didn’t know where to turn to further their careers. SMS handles everything from management, artist image, marketing, advertising, and booking local venues as well as state fairs, festivals, and full-blown concerts, such as the recent House of Blues Orlando Rocks Country concert.
It took Ellis close to two years to convince the House of Blues to try a country spin on their Orlando Rocks series. Over 2400 fans showed up for the sold-out concert that featured local artists Michael Ray of Eustis, Patrick Gibson of Apopka, Whiskey Basin of DeLand, and April Phillips of Apopka. The event was hosted by radio personality
Bubba “Whoopass” Wilson, who said “It was a spectacular night. I had so much planned and ended up winging it because the crowd was feeling the good vibe.”
Ellis said House of Blues is ready to do it again; another Orlando Rocks Country concert is in the works.
