FOCUS

1

Editorial

Time is a force we cannot control. It marches on ruthlessly, not heeding our request to slow down. Whether we like it or not, we have to surrender to a world in the cloud and on an intangible presence in the digital era. We have to give up the luxury of being able to touch and feel the silken glossy pages of a printed magazine and inhale the scent of a freshly printed book; just as we have surrendered to the emails and e-cards. Our longing for the old fashioned letters delivered by snail mail and colourful cards to decorate the mantle shelf is just a pipe dream.

Our school annual magazine ‘FOCUS’, too, has now to be stacked in the shadowy, virtual world as an e-Magazine. On the flip side, we can take heart that like Keats’ Grecian Urn it will remain forever fresh and young; it will not become dog-eared by constant turning of pages by youngsters eagerly searching for their articles or pictures.

Just like Time, Meridian’s success is progressing at a mind boggling pace. The C.B.S.E. result announced in May 2017 was stupendous. All students who appeared for the 10th class got distinction marks! Kartic Baradwaj, the topper in 12th MPC group scored the highest marks in the city! He has also been accepted for an exclusive certified programme at CERN in Switzerland, the epicentre in the field of research in particle physics. The school has won multiple National awards from various educational surveys. Science department has kept the flag flying by winning the CBSE National Science Exhibition for their model which controls machine with the mind! Our students have won International recognition on environmental and social issues in New York, and for Sustainable Education in Japan. They have also won International laurels in Tennis and Equestrian sports.

The global connection continues to flourish with student exchange programmes with France and International School Affiliation from the British Council. New frontiers in pedagogy are opening in our school with the launch of the Primary Years Programme as a candidate for International Baccalaureate Diploma.

The approach to education has radically changed with the advent of digital revolution. In the future, educational activities will increasingly take place away from traditional classrooms. The challenge is to empower teachers with adequate technical skills and accept the fact that new ways of learning will lead to holistic growth.

Meditating Meridian

While we definitely use our mind each and every day, very few of us take time to cultivate a deep understanding of its nature and function. So, to cultivate our mind and body, an enlightening yoga session was organised at Meridian School, Banjara Hills by Isha Foundation.

It is quite difficult for most people to recognize states of mind as they arise. Therefore to be truly free from suffering and enjoy happiness every moment, it is imperative that we possess a thorough and profound understanding of the mind and how to retain control over it. Yoga is the best, most reliable way by which we can greatly improve our quality of life both now and for years to come. The teachers were briefed about the ways and means which

Yoga helps in maintaining both mental and physical health. The resource person took the participants through a rigorous ninety minutes of Yogic experience. Various postural exercises of Upa Yoga Asanas helped the teachers relax their body and mind. It was quite an elevating experience for one and all. Mrs.Ritu Mody. Teacher

TYE THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS

TYE Young Entrepreneurs is a Global programme aimed at fostering future generation of entrepreneurs. TYE focuses on teaching entrepreneurship to high school students.

The Chief Guest, Rajiv Sharma I.A.S., Chief Secretary of Telangana State, shared his views on the importance of entrepreneurship for the future of our country and economy.

TYE teaches students about the real world, how it actually works rather than teaching theory from books. TYE is an application based programme which helps students to understand the real world scenario.

Workshop Spree at Meridian The new academic year began with a spree of workshops for teachers at Meridian Banjara hills. A workshop was conducted on 2nd April, 2016 at Meridian School, Banjara Hills on ‘Different Learners, Different Approaches’by Ms. Afshan Jabeen, the Director of Ripples. The session was very interactive with question answer rounds and presentation of visual clippings. The purpose of the workshop was to drive home the fact that children with disabilities must be accepted by the society and a teacher is the first person to recognize symptoms in a child and provide assistance by putting it across to the parent. The workshop was attended by teachers who handle children of all age groups right from Pre-primary to Senior Secondary, including counsellors and co-scholastic teachers because it is necessary that a child with learning difficulties at any age group has to be taken care of at school by all teachers as a unit. Her advice to a teacher is “A child with a disability needs support. Stand behind him, and back him! Believe in him and have expectations!

On the 3rd June was an interactive workshop by Ms.Spandana Kommuri, a Counseling Psychologist from Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The workshop dealt with many issues related to teachers and parents the two fundamental factors for the overall development of the child. It came as a

25

respite to those who face day to day challenges with tough parents. The workshop was highly interactive as teachers collectively worked upon how their expectations from parents vary from those of parents from teachers. Ms.Spandana also touched upon two important theories in Human development- Erikson’s stages of psychological development and Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. Some characteristics of a ‘Cool Teacher’ were also listed. It motivated the teachers to look at each student as a unique individual in the process of development undergoing various transformations every moment seeking support from parents and teachers as mentors.

The workshop By Dr.Sai Kiran, the creator of the Guinness World Record, 4 world records and two National records for being the fastest calculator on how to enhance one’s memory through mnemonics dealt in detail with multiple intelligence and how each student has a different learning style. Dr.Sai Kiran is

also the founder of IMPACT – Institute of Memory Power And Calculation Techniques. He talked at length about the structure of human brain and different functions of the left and the right brain. He also hinted at how their roles can be reversed with a little practice. He defined Mnemonics as a technique to remember new information with already existing information in the brain. He called the present century as the era of infinite possibilities. He demonstrated the a rt of using Mind maps and clustering as an important tool to create visuals in the minds of the learner to help him learn quicker and retain longer. The workshop was a beautiful learning experience for teachers which taught them how to make their classes more interesting and student-t centric.

Design, Deploy and Transform Workshop for Educational Leaders was conducted on 4th June by Mr.Pranshu Singhal, the Director for Digital Learning Strategy, Microsoft. It was designed to prepare education leaders and teachers to envisage, plan, implement, evaluate and expand 1:1 digital learning. The 5-phase workshop focused on the right intention to use technology in schools to equip the students with 21st Century skills. Mr.Singhal discussed in detail the compelling case for change, redesign learning and teaching, leading the shift, implementation and evaluation of the initiatives taken by the schools towards

26

introduction of digital learning. The session began with fundamental queries like - How do students learn? What does digital richness now make possible for modern learners? What building blocks are necessary for a modern learner? At the end, functions of some handy software tools like One Note, Sway.com, Office mix, Welcome Educator, Kaho etc were briefed to the teachers tenable them to connect to the teaching fraternity across the globe.

On 6th June, the staff of Meridian was enlightened to the significance of experiencing silence by a workshop conducted by Sister Radhika, from the Brahma Kumaris. She emphasized on connecting with one’s true inner selves. She explained that the Innateself is pure and radiates happiness .She conducted an activity to reinforce spread of happy thoughts. Radhika Behn conducted a meditation session that was a refreshing experience. She reiterated that good thoughts precede and evolve positive results. At the end of the workshop the sisters distributed sweets to all the attendees, symbolic of the need to practise sweet talk and a card, the message on which, surprisingly matched with the personality of the one who received it with thanks. Meridian Celebrates Its Founder’s Day and Investiture Ceremony

Meridian School for Boys and Girls, Banjara Hills celebrated its 21st Founder’s Day and Investiture Ceremony on 12th July 2016. The programme started off traditionally with an invocation shloka rendered by the school choir while the founders Mr.B. Neelakanta and Mrs.B.Renuka lighted the ceremonial lamp along with the Principal Dr D.Usha Reddy. This was followed by the hoisting of the school flag to the rendition of the school song. Mrs Rahat Rashed warmly welcomed the guests with the opening address of the day.

The entire programme was thematically woven around the Sun – it being the symbol of the school and the five Houses which are also named after it in various languages. An Indian classical dance,“Salutations to Surya’ in praise of the Sun God, and the depiction the stately chariot drawn by horses was greatly applauded by the audience.

To promote Environmental Awareness and the Go Green initiative taken up by the school, it was decided, for the first time ever, to give soft copies of the school magazine instead of printing it. The Annual School Magazine CD ‘Focus’ was released by the founders, Mr Butta Neelakanta and Ms Butta Renuka.

Taking another leap into the present digital age, the management released and presented to the parents and teachers the ParentZapp and the TeacherZapp – the official School Apps which will certainly make communication very convenient. Amineni Shivani, ITF and AITA Topper of U/16 girls Tennis in India was gifted with a 2 lakh scholarship in recognition of her achievements in the field of tennis.

Investiture Ceremony is that occasion where the school respects and acknowledges its budding leaders and reposes trust in them. It is a defining moment for the newly elected young leaders as the school entrusts responsibilities to them.

The school has grown immensely popular in these 21 years and so has the size of the school student council comprising 43 prefects. All the proud prefects marching with their heads held high and hearts filled with new aspirations was a splendid sight for the audience to witness. Dr.Usha Reddy Principal, administered the solemn oath to the Student Apex Body to uphold the values, philosophy and doctrines of the institution. In her speech to the

46

audience and to the newly elected cabinet, Drl Usha Reddy encouraged the students to work hard and keep their eye on their goal – for it is through focus and determination that one can achieve his aspirations. This was followed by messages from Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Mrs Renuka Butta and the MD, Mr Butta Neelakanta.

To enliven everyone’s spirits, a contemporary dance ‘Tryst with Colours’ was gracefully performed.

The programme culminated with the vote of thanks given by the Head Boy, Karthic Bharadwaj and the Head Girl, Syeda Shagufta followed by the National Anthem.

Ujwal Kumar proud Aluminus of Meridian , writes to Meridian

Hi Ma'am, It was nice to hear from you the other day. It's great to see you're involved with the Meridian family. I can't wait to be back in school one day to see how wonderfully it has evolved! You asked about what I've been up to after Meridian, so here's a detailed account. I'd always wanted to experience hostel life after school, and I went to Sri Chaitanya in Hydernagar. I took Maths, Physics and Chemistry as my main subjects with an aim to get into Engineering. Like most other peas in the pod. After having done well there, I was admitted to VIT University in Vellore, where I completed my B. Tech in Computer Science and Engineering. I was selected to work with a Professor at TU Dresden in Germany on my Bachelor's thesis, which took me overseas for the first time in my adolescent life. I spent about 6 months in Dresden, played cricket for a club there and we traveled to the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Switzerland, competing against other clubs. All this alongside the research work of course. In the mean time I'd been accepted to a few good schools in the US in Master Programs for Computer Science. It was time for me to do the not so usual this time. After my wonderful experience in Europe, I decided that I'd rather stay in Europe than head to the US. I applied to the 3 best technical universities in Europe. ETH Zurich, TU Delft and EPFL. I figured if I got in to any one of these I'd stay. Luckily enough one day, I ended up packing my bags and found myself heading to the Netherlands to make Delft my home for the next 2 years. Those were two of the most amazing years of my adult student life. A plethora of new experiences and cultures, colored my time in hues I never knew existed. It was beautiful. It was during my Master's research thesis that I was inspired and captivated by the opportunity to solve important Computer Science problems through research. Long story short, I decided to pursue a PhD in Computer Science and moved to Germany after getting accepted to a research lab that was a great fit for my interests. Just over 3 and a half years later, here I am writing my thesis on a topic I love (Human Computation and Crowdsourcing). I'll defend my work within 3 months of submitting it to the jury. Through the course of these last few years, work and my zest to discover as much of the unseen as I can, has taken me to over 35 countries around the world. I've loved every bit of it and yearn for more. At some point this year, when I will successfully defend my dissertation and culminate the amazing journey towards 'doctor-hood', I'll still be that little kid in school who recited "I knew a man from Petushkee". Do you remember The Muddlehead? As for what's to come, I can't wait to find out! P.S. > Thanks for being a wonderful teacher. . I know Vijay, in fact we were housemates while I lived in Dresden 7 years ago. My German isn't all that fluent since I work in an international environment and don't need to speak the language much. I can speak enough to get by quite well though. Do convey my regards to Usha Reddy ma'am as well. It will be a pleasure to meet you all again. I look forward to that. Take care ma'am, and I wish you great health and joy.

MERIDIAN SPELLATHON - 2016

Spelling has always been a complicated matter for anyone trying to learn the English language. It's no wonder that spelling can be a competitive event!

Meridian Spellathon -2016 was organized by Meridian Middle School in the school on 18th July. Five teams each from classes 5, 6 and 7 participated with great enthusiasm and they dueled through the tough rounds. Two written rounds of spelling were conducted before the finalists were selected for the final round. Parents of the finalists also attended to cheer their children who have put their heart and soul in learning the spellings.

The teams were named after dictionaries, flowers and different bees. The contest consisted of six rounds: Spell well- a general round, Shuffle & Spell- a round of anagrams, See & Spell- a visual round, ‘Letterature’ – a round of guessing the word with the uncovered words, Guess

& spell- a dumb Charade round and finally Quick Spell – the rapid fire round.

The conference hall turned into a busy bee hive with the participants, parents, students and teachers with a striking ambiance created with balloon arches, trees and hives, flowers and creepers. All the rounds were appreciated by the parents who actively participated in the dumb charades.

The final round the rapid fire round indeed set the hive ablaze as the Speller of the Year was Selected. It was a tough win as even the final rounds had two rounds of ties. Bhargava Nimishakavi, Aditya Ojha and Ishya and were declared the Spellers of the Year, Chambers, Daffodils and Queen Bees were the winning teams and Websters, Pansies, and Worker bees were the runner up teams for classes 7, 6 and 5 respectively.

The Principal, Dr.D.Usha Reddy, the Head Mistress, Mrs.Rajkamal and the Middle School Incharge, Mrs.Geeta Shyamsunder, Mrs. Gouri Sircar, the Resource Person appreciated the efforts put in by all the participants and congratulated the winners and spellers of the year. The students were all well trained by all the teachers of the Department of English and they all worked as a team in making this event a grand one.

This competition was a wonderful learning source for the participants and helped in enriching their vocabulary bank. The chief objective of the competition was to

help students to learn to spell quickly, accurately and with comprehension. encourage students to explore the English language.

57

awaken excellence, promote values and provide an opportunity for students to meet and compete with their peers in an atmosphere of fun and friendship.

The competition was well received by the students and they participated with great enthusiasm and zeal. Kudos to all the super spellerz !

The Joy of Giving

Giving is the master key to success, in all applications of human life. For it is in giving that we receive. Happiness can be doubled when we spread it. We all know how great it feels to receive gifts. However, the joy of getting is short-lived. Our lives are richer when we share, and that great inner joy comes from helping others to better their lives. Thus the 3rd graders of Meridian School , Banjara hills along with their class teachers Sherley, Uzma, Kalyani, Sushmita, Vibhuti and Rajyalaksmi wanted to give a small token of love, appreciation and happiness to all the Kitchen, Security, Housekeeping and Transport staff of the school. Their initiative was put into action by Sailaja, Incharge Primary Section, and the children looked delighted and happy. The sheer experience of the feeling of satisfaction and joy in giving was visible on each of the little ones’ faces .

Uzma, Teacher

Yoga, the way of Life

The traditional definition of yoga is ‘union’ and to us it means when we bring all our parts and many layers of ourselves together, we know ourselves in a deeper way. We feel supported inside, united, we feel more complete and self-confident and this leads us to a sense of connection with our divine nature. With this integration, we magnify our power to create more beauty, more awareness, more elevated

58

consciousness, more love. Yoga is more than an activity, it is a way of life. We align our bodies, our minds and hearts. We celebrate life no matter what. Students of classes 1 to 4 celebrated World Yoga Day with a lot of enthusiasm. Meditation was something they enjoyed the most. At the end of the celebration we realised that the kids wanted to celebrate life. They wanted to align with nature. They wanted to express their true gifts and so we at Meridian celebrated the kids’ pure wisdom.

Rajyalakshmi, Teacher

Pledging Green Shailaja K.

Green is the predominant color in nature, and today it's often associated with environmentally-friendly choices and lifestyles. What does it mean to “Go G.R.E.E.N.”? Generate less waste. Recycle everything that cannot be reused. Educate the community on eco-friendly options. Evaluate the environmental impact of actions. Nourish discussions and activities that integrate environmental education into the existing curriculum. The 4th graders of Meridian School, Banjara Hills as part of their Go Green Initiative pledged their solidarity by creating a tree with hand prints. The Pledge was administered by Dr. Tarun Joshi, Group Commander, Grey Hounds and The Awareness Rally was flagged off by him, along with Mrs. Suman Malic, Joint Comissioner, Income Tax. For the students it wasn’t only a tree plantation campaign but a widespread programme bringing lives to the planet in the form of greenery.

Rhyme Time, a musical evening for preprimary children

On World Farm Day, the little ones sang all the new rhymes they had learnt about animals, birds, animal products and transport. The most loved rhyme is, of course, Old Macdonald. They put up a splendid performance in front of their parents. At the end, a child dressed as the farmer joined the singers.

The Little Spellers

Here are two reasons why spelling is important: 1. Communication: good spelling facilitates communication. 2. Comprehension: good spelling avoids confusion. Spelling words help lay the basic foundation that every child will

65

need throughout his/ her education and life. The Preprimary section too conducted the ‘Spell Bee’ for PP2 on 10th February. A month earlier saw the first round being conducted, where each child was given 50 words to learn. Three best spellers from each section were selected for the finals. Parents were invited for the Grand Finale, which consisted of three rounds, to decide the best out of the best. A rapid fire round was also conducted and the parents who were the special invitees had a great time. The children showed good spelling skills and enjoyed themselves. The three winners were given mementos and every participant was given Participation Certificate. Ms. Usha, the Preprimary In charge, while thanking the parents for their gracious presence said that ‘Spell Bee’ definitely increases the child's memory, vocabulary and team spirit.

Spell Well

We have spell-checkers on our computers, so why is it important that our children learn to spell? Is it important our kids learn the spelling rules we learned at school? Remember? When -ing comes to stay, little e runs away. Experts point out that teaching spelling systematically dispels the myth that spelling is unpredictable and confusing. That English is too chaotic to make sense is a myth. Sure, spelling is not simple, but when people understand its structure, it can be decoded. Spelling is important because it aids in reading. It helps cement the connection that is shared between sounds and letters. Spelling and reading also have a common factor, proficiency with language. The Spell Well preliminary round was conducted for the students of Classes 1 to 4 of Primary section, Meridian school, Banjara Hills, way back in the month of December. The Competition witnessed 100% participation and focused on the vocabulary awareness towards the English language skills. It was an

66

enriching and learning experience for the students. Around the same time watching and seeing the excitement and enthusiasm of the students some animals like the Orangutan, Panda, Seal, Rhino and a cute little bird , the Sparrow came to Meridian and requested us to conduct the finals in their forest. They wanted to witness the event and wanted parents, students, staff and most importantly the contestants to enjoy their hospitality.

So the forest ambience was created by Ms. Rumana and the event took

place successfully. All the participants, the winners and the Champion Spellers went back home with gifts.

Mystery Reader

Storytelling can sound like a lot to take on but with some basic information and a bit of practice plus a leap of faith you’ll start telling stories like a pro in no time. Storytelling is central to us as human beings so even though it isn’t

something we do very often in modern life. There is a part of us that already knows how to do it. Children enjoy hearing stories all day, every day from all around the world. They are especially captivated by fairy tales because these stories mirror the developmental struggles of children who are transitioning out of early childhood. Children all over the world love listening to stories. They want to know more about their favourite characters and often try to emulate them. By telling a child stories that come with a meaningful message, you can definitely inculcate qualities like wisdom, courage, honesty, etc. from an early age. Listening to a story helps a child imagine the characters, places, plot etc. This also enhances creativity, making them more imaginative and open to ideas and free thinking. Keeping this in mind, Anita Jetley, Coordinaor and Sailaja, Incharge Primary Section, invited Ms.Chitra and Ms. Nidhi to narrate a story to the students of the 1st grade. It was an instant success. In fact, they wanted the Mystery Reader to continue and the hall echoed with the kids asking for more.

Global Tiger Day

On 29th July, students from the Middle School visited KBR Park situated at Banjara Hills. A special programme was organized to spread awareness about our National animal – Tiger. This day is known as Global Tiger Day as well as International

Tiger Day.

It is celebrated annually to raise awareness about tiger conservation. The goal of the Tiger Day is to promote protection and expansion of the wild tiger habitats and also to gain support for tiger conservation.

At present the number of wild tigers is at its lowest. In the last 100 years, around 97 percent of the total tiger population has been lost.

The students enjoyed every bit of the programme. They were motivated to take initiative to promote tiger conservation. It also helped to enhance their curiosity and interest. It was indeed an impressive programme.

We Recite

The English group Recitation Competition of classes 3 and 4 was held on 28th July. As we all know, poems are meant for enjoyment. Beauty is the realm of poetry and children enjoy the beauty of expression, thoughts, feeling, rhyme, rhythm and music of the words. Taking all these facts into consideration, children got an opportunity to exhibit their talent and confidence. The themes were ‘Humour ‘for the 3rd graders and ‘ Animals’ for the 4th graders. Right from the crocodile visiting the dentist to the journey of the Owl and the Pussy cat, children chose a variety of poems on the theme of animals for their recitation. They recited with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Two judges were invited to witness, appreciate and applaud the participants in the competition.

Music in their hearts.

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life and inspires one to live a lofty life. There is absolute tranquility and harmony, when the magical notes of music enter one’s heart. Such experiences are beyond words and can only be sensed. Music has a magical power. This is testified by the fact that Orpheus, a legendary Greek musician could make stones dance to his music. The stories of Tansen and Baiju Bawra are not unknown to us. They could light lamps, melt stones, blossom flowers in autumn, cause rain just by the accurate use of melody. World Music Day was brought in by the Primary School children; ably guided by the music teachers, Mr. Gomes and Mr. Sunny, along with the Coordinator, Ms.Anita Jetley and the In charge Ms.Sailaja, The retinue of enthusiastic facilitators and children crooned many a song and enjoyed the melodies. It truly was a day of celebration.

A SHORT STORY

Hope Is Where the Heart Is

I am one of three. The middle. Second of three brothers. We are your enemy. Your weakness.

Let me tell you who we are.

My younger brother: Shame. The voice in your head. The devil on your shoulder. The mischievous one. He tells you that you’re not good enough. He brings you down. He feeds on pity and humiliation, buried deep in your mind.

My elder brother. Fear. Decked out in a long black cloak. Old and wise. He holds you back from your true potential. Guides you through the wrong path. Disguising a better one with obstacles that seem greater than they are. He resides in the pit of your stomach, feeding on pain and anger.

And finally, me. Your worst enemy, but you see me as a friend. I am the one you always look to when there is no other way. I do not feed on your emotions, I give you strength. I make you get up, when all is lost. Make you keep going when there is no light at the end. Force you to try again. Yet I know you will fail.

I am the worst by far. Because I live in your heart. Without me you will die. Without me there is no light, however false. I am your worst enemy. You call me your best friend. The final option. The safety net.

I am Hope.

Poetry is to the heart, what music is to the soul’

This was the motivation behind the Inter-Section English Recitation Competition for class III. Reciting poems and rhymes are very important for the development of children as it improves their vocabulary and helps in their cognitive development. Children who memorize poetry

73

learn a wide range of descriptive words that they might not encounter frequently while reading. Children also love songs and rhymes with actions. This encourages them to be involved in group activities. They not only learn the song but the actions too, which in turn help in the gross motor and fine motor development.

My Teacher

Teacher is a person who provides many important things along with education. A teacher guides us throughout our life and helps us find the correct path to success. A teacher moulds us into a perfect human being capable of living in the society. I cannot have only one favourite teacher in my life. There are many teachers in my life who helped me throughout my school life till now but I would like to mention one name among all my wonderful teachers and that is Suneetha Ma’am . She was my class teacher for two whole years and we all love her as our mother. She is a marvellous teacher. She taught us many things. She taught us to be the right human being. She taught us to be ourselves. I think there are many wonderful teachers but very few like her. I thank her for everything she has given me and I will love her till my last breath.

Ahana Sarkar, IX B ,

Much loved teacher

To teach is to love. It is to unconditionally give knowledge, affection and respect to the children you teach in your classroom. To love your children is easy, but to be loved by your children is a difficult task. However, for the teacher who walked into our very first class with a smile on her face when we were in the fourth grade, and walked in again in the eighth with the same cheer, it wasn't so difficult after all.

English, as a subject was always my favourite because of my love for the language, so naturally I believed I could not love it more. However, on the first class, I was greeted with a pleasant surprise. Sailaja Ma'am not only understood what would get us interested in the topic we were to discuss, but also made sure we never got off track. The already beautiful image of the subject I had in mind was further embellished by the numerous activities and discussions we had in class. A 10-page long drama which everyone believed monotonous suddenly made us laugh and giggle as Ma'am read it out, dramatising the sarcasm and satire. Sailaja Ma'am ensured our involvement in all classes while never seeming pushy, and her classes became something we would eagerly wait for.

Ma'am has always recognised the individual talents of every child and made sure that they get recognised for it. She has been a source of motivation and support for all of us as she will never stand for anything below our standards, but at the same time, helps us raise them. Sailaja Ma'am will always be one of

74

the best teachers our class has had the honour of being taught by, and she will be remembered for that long after we graduate.

I truly believe that teachers like her are what the future depends on.

Who is a teacher ? Anushree Bang , Grade 12,

A teacher is a storehouse of knowledge and wisdom. A teacher is a person who inspires students. A teacher is the most responsible and important member of society. A teacher is a person who brings out the best in students.

Teachers have always played an important role in my school life. They have always supported, motivated and encouraged me to choose the right path. One of my favourite teachers is Mrs. Sailaja Koduri. She was my English teacher in grade 6 and then taught me for four consecutive years. She is a strict disciplinarian in class, conscientious about her work in school and a pleasing and delightful person at heart. Her dedication and determination to teach her students is limitless. She inspires by the way she explains and enhances the love for the subject through her pre - reading and post - reading activities. I remember the days when I was not well and she took care of me as my mother would. She is the one admired and loved by all. On the occasion of Teacher's Day, I would like to express my gratitude towards her and would like to say that she is not only an ideal teacher but a great philosopher, friend and guide. With her blessings I know I will shine anywhere in the world. I will always respect her for what I am today. Thank you for everything ma'am and I love you the most. HAPPY TEACHER'S DAY!

MUSIC IN MY LIFE

By Armaan Jetti, VIII E

“Music is like a dream. One that I cannot hear,” said Ludwig van Beethoven, the German composer and pianist who produced some of the best

75

compositions when his hearing capacity had completely deteriorated. Impairment was never a hurdle for his creativity. When I was small, I would repeatedly hear and play Beethoven’s ‘Symphony Number 9 – Ode to Joy’ on my keyboard and would feel immensely happy. My exposure to music went beyond Beethoven, but my admiration towards the maestro, never diminished.

I can hardly recall when exactly I developed interest in music. My parents say I had an ear for music even when I was a baby. I’ve heard all kinds of music being played at home. I remember the drive in the car with my dad has always been an exciting outing and it was mostly because of the music he would play while driving.

Attending Bryan Adam’s live concert in Hyderabad when I was seven, was a turning point in my life. The power of his music, his stage presence and his amazing vocal and guitar skills blew my senses away. Constant conversations with my dad on the nuances of the songs I would listen to, helped me learn more about various instruments and their dominance in a composition (that the piano/keyboard is connected to the mind, string instruments touch the heart and drums are the heartbeat of an orchestra, I grasped early). My interests varied from Hard Rock to Heavy Metal. For example I discovered the magic of Gun’s N’ Roses, Pink Floyd, Queen, Led Zeppelin and Van Halen — who is my current favourite. Most of the people, find my choice of bands which belong to the 70s, 80s and 90s weird. But I’m glad I discovered the magic of these great artistes and am able to cherish their music and can even play some of their numbers.

Getting myself enrolled in keyboard classes in school further helped me hone my skill. I started to enjoy playing drums and guitar too with the same gusto.

One need not be a Beethoven or a Mozart or even an Ilayaraja or AR Rahman to keep the music going. You can make space for music in your life and allow it to motivate you.

I truly believe when ‘Willy Wonka’ Johnny Depp said that “Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can’t.”

A GOTHIC TALE Samyuktha Nandineni VIID

A Midsummer Nightmare

I felt the cool breeze caress my face. My feet pedal involuntarily as the street whips by in a blur. WAIT! Street?

My body barely has time to tense before I relax. I’ve had this dream before. My mind slips into a foggy dreamlike state, as I allow my body to lead me.

Never have I made a worse decision.

My bike lay abandoned on the street and a hand digs into my shoulder. I feel my breathing accelerate. No matter how many times I have dreamt this, I never lose the feeling of impending doom. My body betrays the fear I harbour, as beads of sweat lick down the side of my face. A shudder ripples down my back as his warm breath hits it, seeping into my icy skin.

I wait for it to come. The moment when I have to look into his eyes. I miss him so much, that a part of me longs for this dream. But the dominant part dreads it. I begin to shake as I hear a rustle of movement behind me. The man dangles the worn photograph before my face. It comes closer, brushing my nose, but I am lost. I drift away as the photo awakens memories I had buried deep in my mind. I hear a faint laughter. I see his eyes, boring into my soul. I feel his hand slide down my arm, like the flow of water. I smell the scent of the sea that lingers on his skin. I taste his lips on mine.

His bronze hair falls elegantly into his eyes. His green eyes are vibrant against his smooth, tan skin. Those eyes haunt me every second of the day.

I am brought back to reality, when a hand slams onto my mouth, forcing tablets down my throat. The world blurs around me, in synchrony with my

77

mind as it shuts down. I slide down to the ground and feel relief as my eyes slide shut.

“It’s over. The dream is over” Is my only thought, before the drugs take me under.

My hands are tied behind me. I barely begin to panic before I feel a searing pain on my forearm. The man has a sadistic smirk on his grimy face as he cuts a pattern into my forearm. I squirm as the pain spreads through my body, closing my mind from everything else. I watch as his name emerges. FINNICK. Engraved into my arm forever. A memory of my mistake. Of my betrayal. Of my crime.

A burning ache spreads in the vicinity of the cuts. It burns into my skin. I can tell the torture is just beginning.

And then it hits me. The dull ache I felt as the hand dug into my shoulder. The sharp pain that shot through me as the rope around my hands cut into my skin. And the searing agony I felt as the knife tore through my forearm.

PAIN

You aren’t supposed to feel pain in a dream. And that’s when reality slapped me in the face.

This wasn’t a dream.

‘ANNA DAAN’ at Ramakrishna Math Shabana Rahmath

"It takes a kind heart to give the needy what they need". Big careers, great height and wealth do not define your character; it is defined by the acts of your generosity. Meridian has been closely associated with the Ramakrisna Math’s Institute of Human Excellence. The eighth graders were motivated and inspired by Awakened Citizen programme. They donated blankets to the old and needy and participated in "Anna daan service" at Math.

AWAKENED CITIZEN PROGRAMME -AN INSPIRING ONE

Motivated and inspired by The Awakened Citizen Programme which is going on in our school,we, the students of Grade VIII along with our value education teacher Ms.Shabana Rahmath visited Ramakrishna Math recently.

When we stepped into the premises of the Math we felt the holy aura of the Math which soothed our naughty minds. First we entered the library and read a few good books like, ‘ Awakening Citizens of India ‘ ‘ My India- Eternal India ‘ and noted down the quotes from Swami

Vivekananda and other famous personalities. We even read a sloka from the Bhagawat Geeta. We distributed blankets to the needy and also participated in the ‘Ann adaan’ service. When we wrapped the blankets around the shoulders of the needy, their eyes filled with tears of thankfulness and they blessed us with long life. We felt very elated at that moment. Then we participated in ‘Anna daan’ service which serves a full meal to the underprivileged people everyday. Our sincere thanks to Meridian School and our Teacher Mrs.Shabana Rahmath for conducting this fantastic programme which has created nostalgic memories that we will cherish forever.

Picnic at Palm Exotica Navya. M – VI A

It was a beautiful and bright morning. We were all so excited to get up early in the morning and get ready for the class picnic to Palm Exotica. The very thought of going for a long drive with friends and teachers, away from the regular school gave me a sense of joy and happiness. We had our bags packed with junk to munch on and cool drinks to soothe our throats. Our bags were filled with happiness and excitement.

We boarded the buses with our teachers and we started ‘Shuru Karo Antakshari’. The one hour drive was filled with claps, loud shouts, tick tick and what not. We finally reached the most sought after resort, ‘Palm Exotica’. It was a beautiful 60 acre sprawling meadow and the greenery was fascinating and refreshing to the eyes. We ran to explore what it had in store for us. We saw two huge swimming pools, water slides, an adventure park and a play pen. We could not contain our excitement and enjoyed almost everything till we were exhausted. The games made us terribly hungry.

Lunch was served in a huge hall and the variety of the food spread out was mouthwatering. There were delicious Noodles, Manchuria, roti and dal. We had ice cream for dessert. We had a last look at the beautiful campus and took some pictures to capture its beauty. It was then time to go back to school. The enjoyable trip had come to an end and we wished we could stay there longer. But all good things must come to an end. With that thought we boarded the buses

and started playing ‘ Antakshari’ again till we got back to school.

A VISIT TO LEONIA SUHASINI DUBE CLASS: VIII-E

I could barely contain my excitement the previous night. I was jumping up and down with joy, packing my bag and checking the constant messages from my friends who were just as excited as I was. After about an hour of packing, messaging trying not to become hyper due to the excitement, I went to bed. Well, going to bed is one thing and getting to sleep is another story. I couldn’t wait till the break of dawn. I woke up the next day with a squeal of joy and got dressed in a flash, all ready to go to school. After reaching the school and chatting nineteen to a dozen, all of the eighth and seventh graders couldn’t wait to start for the event. All of us boarded the buses that were allotted to us, and off we went. Although the ride was supposed to be long, but with friends, rocking music, dancing and laughter it seemed very short. After all it is said that time flies while having fun. Once we reached our destination, the resort Leonia, all of us hurried out of the bus and rushed towards it. We stared at the picturesque resort nestled in rocky but green surroundings. We went in and the one thing that caught everyone’s eye was the inviting water rides at the cool blue sparkling swimming pool. Making a splash, slithering down the slippery water slides and dancing gleefully in the rain with my friends was an unforgettable experience. All this excitement made us hungry. Happily, we were called to eat lunch. Mm…noodles, soup and an array of dishes awaited us. After our scrumptious meal we went go-carting. It was a ton of fun. I felt like a racing car driver gearing up, picking up the pace and almost flying. Well, all good things come to an end; it was time to go home. I wasn’t sad that it was all over instead I was happy to have memories that would last a lifetime. Academic Fair Shriya Velvadapu – VB

We had the Academic Fair on the 18th of February 2017. It was a beautiful and a bright day with a lovely weather, suited for an activity like the Academic Fair. Different students participated in different activities and showcased their ideas in various classrooms. The topics ranged from social reformers, obesity in children, word games, to France. Our parents went around all the rooms and their presence gave us the confidence to showcase our interests and talent. My parents were very happy to see me be a part of Graphology, which was analyzing people’s handwriting based on the patterns of handwriting.

We had worked very hard to put up this show and made it an interactive learning experience. It looked like the entire school had come alive with information and learning. Our Principal, Dr. Usha Reddy Ma’am also visited each room and boosted our confidence. We also learnt many new things from the other classrooms that had presented diverse topics in innovative ways, such as the mechanism of a grinder, Archimedes Principle, a fascinating play on ‘The Yellow Brick Road’ and much more. We also had the various characters of Shakespeare’s plays come alive to woo us. It was an educative, fascinating and brilliant experience .

The Academic Fair finally came to an end and we were very exhausted after such a long and tiring day. The day was well spent and we hope to see many more of such fairs in the future.

Meridian Winter Carnival – the Gateway to Entertainment Galore

Meridian school for Boys and Girls, Banjara Hills organized the Winter Carnival on 21st January with great merry making. Put up by the school staff, children and their parents, the gala event attracted huge crowds.

The school went cashless that day as all transactions were carried out through coupons of Rs.25, Rs.50 and Rs100. There was plenty to keep every age group entertained in some way or the other. Small kids enjoyed the Jumping Castle, Inflated pool, Zorbing, Giant Wheel and pony rides whereas the older ones challenged themselves with brain teasing games, jigsaw puzzles, horror house while the fun lovers hit the dance floor and grooved to the juke box. The presence of parents added to the festive spirit. Every floor of the building was well planned with refreshment corners, fun games, beauty stalls and entertainment.

The game of Tambola had the entire crowd on pins and needles with each one aspiring to grab the attractive prizes which included a Gold Coin as the first prize, meal vouchers, gift vouchers and many more. Some parents took the initiative in putting up stalls of fashion accessories, dress materials and stationery items. While the girls visited nail art, tattoo, mehendi stalls and face painting, the boys had all the fun at the Horror house and ‘Ring the gift’ stalls. The dance floor was a sight to watch where the young and even the old didn’t stop to shake a leg. The foodies had sumptuous feasts at chat bhandars, ice golas, Biryani points and appetizing drink stalls.

A big thank you goes to everyone who came along and contributed. “The proceeds of this grand annual event will be directed to charity activities that will be taken up by the school”, said the Principal, Dr D Usha Reddy. It was a memorable day for everybody who was a part of this entertainment extravaganza designed for a noble cause.

Student Exchange Programme Meridian students have an ongoing Exchange Programme with Lycee Caousuo, a school in Toulouse in France. It was great to meet their French friends who had come down to Hyderabad the previous year. This year they visited the school and the surrounding places of importance. A renowned space centre was an instant attraction. They also visited Paris. A ride down the River Seine, climbing the Eiffel Tower, seeing the famous Mona Lisa in Louvre and visiting the grand Versailles Palace are a must in any tourist itinerary.

On the return journey, the soccer loving students had a brief halt at Barcelona, Spain. The Magnificent Barcelona Football Stadium is the Mecca of all football fans. Walking on the beach at night was another thrilling experience.

At the end of the year, the French students came to Hyderabad . They had a truly fulfilling experience. Visiting the famous Salarjung Museum, visiting the historical fort, interacting with the students of both in Meridian and our adopted village school gave them a glimpse of India’s diversity and culture. They participated in the Sankaranti festival and learnt to play the local percussion instrument. Indian film music and dance too captivated the youngsters. They returned to France with bagsful of memories which would surely add to their personalities and broaden their outlook on global ethos.

A Trip to the Grand Canyon of India

“To travel is to live” Hans Christian Andersen once said. I am sure all of us agree with him. During the Dasara vacation my school took us to Pune, Lonavala, Panchagani and Mahabaleshwar. The names of the places itself is enough to tell you what an amazing trip it must have been.

We started off for Lonavala by train. Train journeys are always fun and entertaining with friends around. Lonavala was a beautiful place with its natural beauty. The sightseeing locations-Khandala, Tiger point, Duke’s nose and Rajmachin Garden were truly mesmerizing and the sweet-corn and chikki were icing on the cake. Imagica was our next destination. It was a thrilling experience. Panchgani was yet another eye-candy being no less of a soul food. It is a traveller’s paradise, resplendent with amazing natural beauty and picturesque locations. Our final destination was Mahabaleshwar – the Grand Canyon of India. It is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy honey and strawberries. Besides the many restraint paths, boating, horse riding, and golf facilities, fishing spots, trekking trails and pretty waterfalls, the town is full of lookout points like the Mahabaleshwar Temple, Arthur’s seat, Monkeys point, Savitri Point and Echo point. We also got to visit the Mapro factory. The trip awakened all our senses; one could feel a connect with nature, dance along with the rhythm of the winds and enjoy the lip-smacking gourmet.

The excursion was a major break for all of us from our monotonous routine. We were able to be one with nature and bond with one another.

Senior students had a taste of corporate life when they spent a day in Microsoft Campus. It was a mix of learning with fun. They visited the different departments where they were mentored by able Resource Persons. They enjoyed playing chess, X-Box, and other games. They learnt about APPs and other Microsoft products. A quiz competition to test their learning and observation skill followed by a sumptuous lunch was a fitting finale. It was indeed a memorable day, a mix of learning and fun!

Old Age Home Nidhi Srivaths,

On the 26th of July, students of Meridian School Banjara Hills, ranging from Grade 7 to 12 were taken to an old age home. With all the money collected and some essentials for the home which included soap and toothpaste, we were excited to meet the residents- for we already thought of them as our grandparents.

Nothing could have prepared us for the love and affection we received from every senior resident; the sheer joy that our simple actions could bring was overwhelming. Some clapped to the beat when the senior students danced for them, some hummed along when the juniors sang for them, but I believe that we brought joy to everyone present. We invited some of them to join us on stage, and they truly enjoyed themselves.

After our presentation, we helped the Sisters at the home clean up and went around the home to interact with the residents. We split up into groups so we could speak to more residents and hopefully give them all joy.

It was heart breaking to see that they still loved their children even after being abandoned by them and wished them nothing but the best in life. Some of them broke down in front of us, but said it was heartening to see young children like us care about the elderly. They asked us to never do the same, and to love our parents with all our hearts.

I believe this was an eye opening experience for all the students involved in this project and I was honoured to take up a project that benefited so many people not only financially, but also emotionally. Not only were we able to make them happy, but we also donated a substantial amount of money that would help pay for any repairs or resources they require. The Interact Club of Meridian Banjara will always strive for the betterment of our society and will always believe that every person’s contribution is essential to the larger picture.

Self-Defence Akshita Triparthi

In today’s world where violence against women is on the rise, it is essential to train the younger generations to be able to defend themselves. Taking up this initiative, as a Director of the interact club,I along with my fellow members were

trained by ex-Interactor Semanthika Reddy who had taken up this project in the year 2014-15. We had three training sessions to prepare for this project. We, the Interactors of Meridian Banjara went to two schools, namely, St.Alphonsus and a Government school (Gati). We held two types of sessions, first being the theoretical one and the second being practical demonstration. The students were very cooperative. They learned and understood very quickly.. I am thankful to the school to give me this position, because of this project, now; even I can walk through the streets with no fear.

Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital

The Awakened Citizen Programme emphasizes on inculcating good values in children. It is true that today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens of the country.

As a part of the awakened citizen programme and an initiative of the value education department, a small batch of eight graders accompanied by value education teacher, Mrs. Shabana Rahmath visited the Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital.

It was a tall white structure which had no hint of the terrifying world that was confined within the walls of the building.

We entered the dormitory hall with the assistance of Mr. Vinay Gupta, the father of Pranay Gupta of IX E. He organised the programme very well and helped us distribute blankets and some food to the patients who accepted them with joy and happiness. While we gave the blankets to them we could see their eyes fill with tears and we were deeply touched.

This trip instilled great values in us as we learnt that it is not just about learning the values, it is about implementing them and practising them for the benefit of society.

We are extremely thankful to the school and the teacher for the enlightening and fruitful trip to the hospital. It was a life changing and a memorable experience and we cherished every moment. We would also like to thank the school management for having value education as a special subject for us. It has brought about a positive outcome by making us responsible students of an even more responsible school.

It’s the character, not the circumstances that make a person.

The End of School Days

Eight years in Meridian School, Banjara Hills and it feels like a lifetime! And now, the time has come, not only for me but for all my batch mates, to say ‘Goodbye’ to our dear Alma Mater.

Memories roll down as tears from my eyes as I remember the days of innocence, days of failure and success, from being strangers to friends and from childhood to adolescence. Who says the school is just a building with deaf walls? – They echo with the joyous moments of our second home. With friends as family and teachers as care givers, I am surely going to miss everything about school life – from waking up early in the morning, finding excuses to not go to school, to wearing my school uniform, the gossips in the cafeteria, the times where I would be locked out of class for not doing my work, to the activities with friends and the discussions with my teachers – Oh my! All these will be locked in my little treasure box – my heart and I will cherish them forever.
