Jazz pianist John Chin, who was born in Seoul, South Korea and grew up in Los Angeles, leads his own trio and quintet and has shared the stage with such jazz legends as Ron Carter and Benny Golson. His music ranges from intimate, with subtly shaded pianism and intoxicating melodies, to exuberant, with dazzling keyboard pyrotechnics and propulsive rhythms. Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Concerts is a program of the Weill Music Institute.

DANCE WORKSHOP AT 1 PM$7/$4 Children/Free for members with tickets to 2:15pm show

Join Thunderbird American Indian Dancers for a music and dance workshop on the Robin Dance from the Iroquois Nation. This is a group dance suitable for adults and children. If time permits, Thunderbird will also introduce the Kiowa round dance.

PERFORMANCE AT 2:15 PM$13/$10 Members/$8 Children/$6 Member Children

Under the direction of Louis Mofsie (Hopi & Winnebago tribes), Thunderbird American Indian Dancers began over 35 years ago as a group of teens who learned the songs and dances of their tribes in order to preserve them. Their teachers were their elders and relatives. Performers use the traditional movements, clothing, and instruments of the Iroquois, Northeast Woodlands and Southwest tribes and the Great Plains people.

Open to anyone with a true story to share on the night’s posted theme: GOSSIP. When the doors open, storyteller hopefuls put their names in The Moth Hat. A half hour later, names are picked, and storytellers take the stage. Each person has just five minutes! Rennie Harris RHAW company members will introduce you to movements and techniques used in hip-hop, including: popping, locking, stepping, break, house and other styles.

RHAW (Rennie Harris Awe-Inspiring Works) features today’s hottest and brightest young street dancers who explore the evolution of street dance and hip-hop through innovative choreography. RHAW performs various styles of hip-hop and illustrates hip-hop’s roots in African tradition and culture throughout the Diasporas. These include African American, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican cultures from the early sixties through today.

Celebrate the Year of the Monkey with Asian dance and much more. Curated by Dr. Hsing-Lih Chou, this year’s sampler will present demonstrations of dance from China, Korea, Taiwan, and India. The New York Classical Players presents a program which showcases the collaborative musicianship that each member brings to the ensemble. Programs include Schubert’s Quartettsatz which requires razor-sharp precision, superlative ensemble and a heightened sense of drama; Enescu Octet, the composer’s Romanian answer to the octet of Felix Mendelssohn; and Schumann’s Cello Concerto as performed by Peter Wiley of the Guarneri Quartet.

Welcome the Year of the Monkey with a calligraphy workshop led by Asian arts specialist Dr. Hsing-Lih Chou. Learn basic calligraphy to write your new year’s wishes. Participants will begin by writing on paper and then write their messages of good fortune on Chinese silk fans. Every time you wave your fan you’ll be spreading your positive message into the New Year!

Annie Chen is a female Chinese jazz vocalist and composer in today’s New York jazz scene. Her original septet incorporates many different types of music into a modern jazz setting, with influences from Chinese traditional, gospel, classical, middle-eastern, and even alternative rock. It features extensive improvisation and strong arrangements to support Annie’s beautiful compositions and her powerful voice.

In this creative and engaging workshop, children will discover the beauty of Korean culture while crafting and dancing. After a brief introduction about Tal Chum (Korean traditional mask dance), children make their own Monkey Tal to celebrate the Year of the Monkey and learn Tal Chum moves. This workshop will stimulate your child’s eye-hand coordination, movement skills, and most importantly, curiosity about new cultures.

National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Award winner Mick Moloney and Lenwood Sloan join forces for a dynamic performance of Irish and African-American music and dance. Queens Jazz OverGround Spring Jazz Festival 2016SAT, APR 16, 12-10 PM, FREE

The fourth annual QJOG Spring Jazz Fest is a free event that features 10 hours of music. The evening concerts are a celebration of jazz musicians from Queens, featuring jazz legends to up-and-coming artists performing in both the theater and gallery. The afternoon will feature masterclasses by top Queens-based music educators and performances by local middle and high school jazz ensembles.

The lively, joyous sound of Matuto entwines Brazilian folk music with the flatpicking guitars and fiery fiddling of American bluegrass. Matuto (Brazilian slang for “country boy”) beautifully embraces Brazilian forró rhythms and the folk traditions of the American South with accordion, guitar, bass, triangle, and zabumba, a bass drum often used in Brazilian music. Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Concerts is a program of the Weill Music Institute.

Nominated in the “Best Female Artist in Eastern Africa” category at the 2015 All Africa Music Awards, Sudan-born and Yemen-raised, Alsarah is a singer, songwriter, and ethnomusicologist who gives voice to a narrative of displacement that encompasses her Sudanese musical canon. Based in Brooklyn, The Nubatones blends a selection of Nubian “songs of return” with original material and traditional music of central Sudan, and – with a distinctly urban sensibility – create a musical journey through diaspora and migration.

PERFORMANCE:

A Symphony of ChimesSUN, MAY 1, 2 PM, FREE

Only ten spoons but thirty forks in the kitchen drawer, and so one of the first instruments EtM Con Edison/FCCA Composer-in-Residence Skip La Plante built was a windchime made from that excess of forks. The next hundred include chimes made out of bed springs, bicycle gears, broken lobster traps, belt buckles, obsolete house keys and many more. And now, in collaboration with choreographer Andrea Skurr, he presents this unique orchestra: A Symphony of Chimes.

Presented by Five Boroughs Music Festival, the exciting mixed-period ensemble The Colonials takes a new look at an old favorite with their innovative program, The Trout Variations. Six new variations on Schubert’s famous theme are seamlessly interwoven into the fourth movement of his Piano Quintet in A Major, courtesy of commissioned composers Brad Balliett, Lembit Beecher, Jonathan Dawe, Paul Epstein, Molly Joyce, and Gity Razaz.

MUSICAL THEATER:

Disney’s Aladdin, KidsTHUR, MAY 12 & FRI, MAY 13, 6 PM, FREE

Join the students of JHS189, Flushing, for their magical production of Aladdin, directed by their musical theater teacher Mr. Daryl Ware. All your favorite characters return, including Aladdin, Jasmine, Iago, Jafar, the Genie, and more, in the Broadway Jr. version of this classic. Come support young artists in this unique arts education experience. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Special thanks to Councilman Peter Koo.

Ba Ban Chinese Music Society: Along the Yangtze River SAT, MAY 14 $16/$10 Members, Seniors & Students

LECTURE & DEMONSTRATION AT 5:30 PMParticipants will learn about Chinese music and the philosophy behind it. Get hands-on experience with Chinese instruments.

PERFORMANCE AT 7 PMThroughout Chinese civilization, a rich musical culture flourished along the southern banks of the Yangtze River. Beginning in the Tang dynasty, the pipa travelled along the Silk Road from northwest China. When the pipa reached the Jiangnan region, its unique timbre blended with melodious southern music. INTERACTIVE ARTS WORKSHOP AT 1 PM$7/$4 Children/FREE for members with tickets to 2:15pm show

This two part workshop will take the participants on a journey through the solar system with learning games about the planets and beyond! After the future astronauts have completed their trip through space, they will come back to Earth for an interactive, fun and engaging activity that will teach them the basics of autism awareness and anti-bullying.

Celeste is having a hard time at school; she can’t seem to make any friends in her class, so she decides she must be from outer space. With her hand-made spaceship, and a new boy in school, her adventures take a new turn. From the award-winning Green Thumb Theatre, Celestial Being explores the world of a young girl with a big imagination and her struggle making social connections. As we see the world through her eyes, and the tremendous color and joy that her inner world presents, we realize that seeing things differently can be a wonderful gift.

PUPPETRY WORKSHOP AT 1 PM$12 Children/$7 Member Children (supplies included)

Master puppeteer, Lee-Chiu Kuang, leads this children’s workshop where participants can paint their own hand puppet based on classical Chinese puppetry designs. Participants get to keep their puppet. Master Lee also instructs participants on manipulating Chinese hand puppets for maximum drama.

Fourth generation master puppeteers from Taiwan, I Wan Jan presents a mesmerizing, traditional hand puppet show based on Peking Opera. This non-verbal piece tells the tale of a young couple’s chance meeting at a festival that has puppets juggling, performing martial arts and much more.

Vijay Kumar presents etchings made over his lengthy career as a printmaker. His prints incorporate diverse etching techniques and a wide range of subject matter. Some prints are whimsical, others quite serious. Some etchings reflect his interest in alphabets and calligraphy, though none of these can be read. One series is based on images of horses. Other etchings are imaginary cityscapes, exploring the intersection of geometry with the urban landscape. Still other prints comment on religious extremism, or on modern life and the human condition.

To help kick off Queens Pride week, Flushing Town Hall presents a program featuring established and up-and-coming performing artists who identify as LGBTQ, and brings the event to the heart of the LGBTQ Community in Jackson Heights. Artists will be selected via an open call to performing artists of all disciplines, including music, dance, spoken word/poetry, theater, and performance art. Visit our website for details. “Dizzy Revisited” is a tribute to a musician who was one of the major contibuters to the language of the jazz vernacular and a prolific composer. It is the melodic world of John Birks Gillespie the tumpeter from Cheraw, South Carolina who moved to New York City and lived in Corona, Queens around the corner from Louis Armstrong. Conducted by NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath, The Queens Jazz Orchestra will pay homage to Dizzy Gillespie performing his classical compositions.

Directed by Pan Asian veteran artist Ron Nakahara, this powerful and timely story is relevant to anyone searching for their place in an unsettled world and following one’s conscience.
