    Flowered Heart TutorialBy: Jacquie Heffner

While surfing the net a few days ago I happened to stumble on a great card made by Katrina M(Watermelon Sugar). Katrina's card utilized flowers punched out of watercolor paper that had beencolored with a soft wash of color, and the results just amazed me! Here is a picture of her card(http://thecreataholic.blogspot.com/2008/06/something-new.html ):

I absolutely fell in love with the soft colors and design of her card and thought that since Valentine's Day is just around the corner, I might be able to use her technique to make a flowered heart. So today we aregoing to make a flowered heart, just in time for Valentine's Day.

Katrina's technique uses water-based markers as her watercolor paint for the wash. I decided to trysomething a bit different and used a mixture of Glimmer Mist, Shimmerz Spritz, and H20's for a sparklyeffect. I also decided to punch out the leaves rather then stamp the leaf images, and of course I used aheart shape for the flowers rather then the oval.

Any flower shape will work for this technique; I just happened to have the Martha Stewart Hydrangea punches on hand, but be creative and use any flower punch or cut out.

    Supplies you will need:

Glimmer Mist (or any similar product)Watercolor Paper (I used 90 lb cold press)Large paintbrush (to blend your color)Water (I used a spray bottle)Flower punches/flower cut outs in various sizesHeart cut out (s) (I used my heart shaped Spellbinders)GlueDimensional gold/yellow for flower centersGlitter for flower centersEmbossing tool (to shape the flowers)Soft pad to use with embossing tool

    Step One:

Spray your watercolor paper with water; make sure toget it nice and wet.

    Step Two:

Spray your paper with your Glimmer Mist colors, Iused green (so I could cut out the leaves) and thensome mauve, white with gold, pearl, pink and red.

NOTE: You can choose to have a "gold" sheen or a"pearl" sheen if you use a "pearl" or "gold" as your last color, make sure to spray the entire page with thespray, covering your previous colors (the gold or pearlwill not change the colors you have put down)

After spraying your colors use your large brush to blend the colors

NOTE: Be very careful that you do not over blend because you will end up with muddied colors insteadof a soft blend.

And while I used reds/pinks/greens, be creative anduse blues, oranges, even brown/beige.

    Step Three:

Let your paper dry (I hurry up this process by usingmy heat gun), when the paper is dry punch out your leaves and flowers.

I punch out the leaves from the green areas, theflowers from the areas that have the other colors.

    Step Four:

To give your flowers some "shape" use the embossingtool to push in the center of the flower, you can alsouse a scoring tool to make more indentations on theflower, I choose not to do this step.

For the leaves you can use the embossing tool to makean indent for a vein.

Take your dimensional paint and put a center into eachflower, then sprinkle with glitter (or you can useglitter glue instead of both the dimensional paint andthe glitter)

    Step Five:

Start placing your leaves on your heart shape, when

you are happy with the placement put a small amountof glue on the leaves and glue in place.

Arrange your flowers on top of the leaves, once youare happy with your design glue the flowers in place.

    Step Six:

Take your flowered heart and layer on top of other hearts (or just use your heart as it is).

As you can see from the close up under the fullheart, the colors, shimmer and sparkle of theflowers is really cool and will give that added"wow" factor to your card.

NOTE: You can also distress ink the edges of your heart for more dimension, but even withoutthe distress ink the heart is amazing.

I hope you have liked this tutorial, andremember that you can also experiment with this

technique, use other shapes, other coloringmediums, and above all have fun.
