Introduction

Welcome to the 2017/18 academic year at Brent Start. We help provide more opportunities for local people to develop skills, confidence and careers by running our adult education courses in community areas across Brent.

Those studying with us have gone onto a variety of careers including: Project Managers, Teachers, Florists, Accountants, Secretaries and Nursery Nurses. Others have gone onto further education, found local employment or

started an apprenticeship. Some have even started their own businesses.

You can hear from some of our students in this booklet, and I look forward to hearing your success stories this year.

Fulfil your potential…

Let’s get started…53 year-old Brent resident Ibrahim is taking Brent Start’s English course at Harlesden Library:

“I was born in Somalia in 1963. I came to this country in 2004 with my family because there was a civil war in Somalia.

“I have lived in Harlesden since 2006. I decided to do a Brent Start course because I wanted to improve my maths and English.”

As well as gaining more fundamental skills to help in his day to day life, Ibrahim is working towards career goals: “My qualification will help me to prepare for interviews and find jobs more easily. My plans for the future are to get further qualifications and develop more learning skills.”

Ibrahim is enjoying his class, and what they are studying: “The best part of the English course is reading, writing and learning new things. I would recommend Brent Start courses because they will benefit people who want to have a better education.”

50 year old Katerina is a hairdressing student, taking part in a course as a new hobby:

“My children are grown up, and I’ve been a housewife for a long time. I always liked doing my hair and my daughter’s hair, so it seemed interesting.”

As part of the course, she’s learned a variety of styling techniques “I can now travel light when I go away! It’s nice to do something for myself; styling my hair makes me feel good, even on bad days.”

As well as practical skills, it’s helped Katerina’s confidence: “It’s brought me out of my shell. At first I was so nervous, it took a real effort to leave my house for class. But now it’s something I look forward to each week!

“I’ve met people from all over the world who I wouldn’t have met otherwise. The group is really kind and fun. It’s great to have made new friends.”

Katerina is enjoying the classes so much, she’s looked into doing something else with Brent Start. “This shows you can keep learning at any age. I’d definitely recommend a Brent Start course; I’m so happy I joined.”

32 year old Willesden resident Deborah took a Brent Start course when beginning her jewellery business:

“I had experience but decided to attend a jewellery-making course to learn additional techniques. This was a great decision, as I developed my knowledge further.”

By doing this course, Deborah found other learning opportunities: “I heard about a Creative Enterprise course which seemed helpful, so I enrolled. It was fantastic, containing lots of useful information such as pinpointing your USP, selling online and holding stalls.”

Deborah also found her business base: “The course included a visit from the South Kilburn Trust, through whom I discovered the South Kilburn Studios, where my business is now based and where I receive free business advice.”

Deborah recently received the Successful Start-Up of the year 2017 award at the South Kilburn Enterprise Awards.

She is also currently taking a Stained and Kiln-formed Glass course with Brent Start, to add glass to her range of jewellery.

Through Brent Start, Deborah has developed many new skills which have helped her achieve her goals:

“My experiences attending courses at Brent Start have helped me develop my business tremendously. I would strongly recommend courses as the skills and support you receive are high quality.”
