RECOVERY FROM A SHOCKING
DEFEAT: FLAGONS 0 RUSSIA TODAY 3
Prepared for the Flagons Post Match Analysis 25/10/2010
• Opportunity to move to 3rd in the league ... yet no-one was taking the game seriously
• Pre-game preparation … everyone thought that it was going to be an easy game
• Flagons lined-up with many good individual players and subs … but no team
• First half order of play was fairly equal with RT gaining slight upper hand towards the end
• Second half order of play was unfocused and scatty … no real Flagons order nor control
• Individual and team failings were clear … there was not a single category in which Flagons did
better than RT and several/most players who should have made more effort
• We improve as a team by playing as a team with established partnerships of players across the
field, working harder when off the ball and always communicating
• We will win the next match by playing to win from the start with strength to beat the Cloggs
2
... mathematically we can still finish 3rd with a good performance against the Cloggs
Executive SummaryFailings throughout
• Flagons sitting 4th in the league one point behind the
Cloggs
• Having won 5 out of the last 6 games
• And with a shiny new kit and two new decent players
• Cloggs had just drawn 3-3 with the Bhoys
• In coldest conditions this year - 6oC overcast,
Westernly wind at 4 mph and humidity at 57%
• A win would take the Flagons to 3rd in the table
• And above the Cloggs for the first time in 2-3 years
• But with no consistent striker to replace Oleg to date

• A few people turned up just before kick off which was 25 minutes late! as the Cloggs vs
Bhoys had overrun
• Several people turned up drunk from the night before and therefore played shockingly
• The Match Reporter wasn't nominated which didn't effect the performance, but showed the
lack of intensity for the game
• Nobody knew if we even had a team when we turned up - it was a shock to most people
when we eventually had 16 players
• And there was no build-up at all throughout the week which may be expected against
previous RT teams but they showed up with at least 5 good players this week and with a
completely different intensity
4
... everyone thought that it was going to be an easy game

Misha
Mike’s talents are wasted on the wing - he should be playing as striker
Gaps on either side can be exploited by overlapping players as Pasha did
Lack of height and strength in midfield
New pairing in attack – two v similar players
Flagons lined-upBut the team had immediate weaknesses
Drawn into centre to cover gaps
Very late arrival
• Flagons win the toss and decide to play with the wind. RT kick-off
• Initial Flagons pressure with good position in the RT half but amounts to nothing
• RT regularly turn over the ball in defense and quickly counter-attack
• Flagons make some good defensive interceptions but defenders are often caught one-on-one with RT
strikers, just like the Pasha game
• Misha turns up half way through the half and goes straight on
• Flagons create several chances but they are falling to the wrong players and each one blasted wide …
where’s Mike, Per and Paul?
• RT gaining confidence and have several attacks end from last minute challenges or are parried away
• RT have the upper hand but Flagons are lucky they haven’t scored
7
... half-time score 0-0
Order of playFirst half
• Flagons kick-off into the 4mph wind and RT start with confidence from the end of the first half - RT
are increasingly winning the 50:50 challenges, gaining many more attacking opportunities
• Rene makes two decent saves early on but Flagons are unsettled
• The wind has been having an effect on Rene’s goal kicks and a miss-kick goes straight to the RT
right attacker. He passes left and it’s neatly slotted home for RT 0-1
• Two RT goals follow in a similar format as RT find themselves in greater numbers against our
defense, easy passes and a few tricks later they shoot past Rene to go 0-2 and 0-3
• Flagons increase pressure and a RT substitute running on the pitch to save the ball on the line
results in penalty for Flagons … is there time to save the game?
• RT’s keeper is playing well (despite being 3 feet tall) and saves Misha’s penalty destroying any hope
8
... full-time score 0-3
Order of playSecond half
9
So what went awry?Individual and team failings were clear …
... there was not a single category in which Flagons did better than RT
10
So what went awry? The snooze factor; higher the score lazier/slower the contribution
… there are several/most players who could have made more effort
• Give advance notice to the Troika that you will play so they can put together the best team together
• Troika to provide an “IN” list before they game and preferably with a starting line-up
• Troika to play players in their best role, not put good players in any role
• All to have some idea about the opposition before the game and be aware of weaknesses in our
team in the context of the opposition
• Prepare formation to suit and prepare a subs bench game plan to not expose ourselves later
• We need to play with established partnerships of players across the field
• We could do some warm ups so that right back and mid work together, centre back and the dog, etc
• Make substitutions when we have control of the ball (i.e. our goal kicks) so can ensure everyone
knows who is playing where before re-starting the game
11
... move when off the ball, communicate and work hard
How can we improve as a team?Play as a team
12
How will we win the next match?Play to win from the start with strengths to beat the Cloggs in each role

Chase Rainer and block shots/passes
Support Raul and block crosses
Win the headers in midfield
Support Pat and block shots/passes
Support Mike and Matthew. Look for the passes and shots
Run the defense and dogs
Support Mike, Paul and Gwyn and overlap Paul
Set calmness and intensity for the team
