26THE RED FLAGS CAMPAIGNWriter / Marcia Vigren

Is it possible to be a victim and not even know it? Yes it is…especially if you are relatively new at this “life” thing (i.e., teenager). Many teenagers just don’t have enough life experiences or con dence to realize that a bad gut feeling they have might really be something important that needs to be addressed. e Red Flags Campaign began as a way to meet the kids where they are, in social media, to identify the red ags of victimization.

SPARTA (Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction, Training Academy) is an elite training facility in Fishers best known for services that include sport-specific coaching, performance training, fitness programs, and sports counseling. Local and regional athletes, sports teams, families, and individual members are improving their performance and fitness levels at SPARTA.

In addition to the sports and performance aspects of SPARTA, owner and boxing coach Luke Dunnuck had a vision to create a leadership program for junior high and high school students. The goal is to empower youth leaders by giving them the tools and confidence for personal and organizational purposes. These youth will positively influence their friends, families, and communities. It’s peer pressure in the most positive format: great leaders creating more great leaders. That vision became a reality this summer when the pilot group began their first-level training. Created in partnership with Will Drumright, sports psychology coach, the SPARTA Junior Mentor Program was born.

The program is designed to be a journey through three levels of certification

beginning with the I5/C5 level. This first level of training includes 10 sessions of personal and organizational leadership development (I5: Identity, intentional, influence, interpersonal, inclusive; C5: Character, competency, capacity, chemistry, culture). After participants are certified in this first level of training, they will move to the second level where they inspire other students to join the program and develop their leadership skills. This second level ensures that training gets put into action and participants are able to mentor new participants. Level 3 certification will complete training for participants to achieve Senior Mentor status. Dunnuck shared, “You can count the seeds in an apple, but you can’t count the apples in a seed! Senior Mentors will significantly impact the world. These great leaders will build other leaders, not followers.”

The pilot participants are already praising the impact of the SPARTA Junior Mentor Program on all aspects of their lives. “This program builds leaders. It made me think about who I am at my core, which I had to figure out in order to become a great leader,” said Patrick Lehmann, Class of 2015 Culver Military Academy. The program is also gaining praises from successful adult leaders. Senator Jim

Merritt, Majority Caucus Chairman, said, “SPARTA’s Junior Mentor Program is putting young people on a path to leadership. These kids are finding their purpose and being equipped to not only lead but to build new leaders. I couldn’t be more excited about the young leaders coming out of this program who will have a positive impact on their families, peer groups, sports teams, and the schools they attend.”

Drumright encourages interested students to contact SPARTA for more information: “Take action in your life and don’t just be a bystander. The positive influences of this program will impact your school performance, sports performance, and performance in life.”

Contact Luke Dunnuck or Will Drumright at SPARTA, located at 10080 E. 121st St. in Suite 157, or at 317-842-2933. Additional information may also be obtained at spartaindy.com or by email at [email protected].

For Lindsey Bockhorst, living in Fishers is de nitely a di erent way of life a er growing up in Boston and living in New York City. In fact, it was in New York City where she met her husband, Ma , who brought her to the Midwest, and it was Ma ’s job that connected her to Living Without’s Gluten-Free Food Allergy Fest.

Lindsey has been married to Ma for four years. ey have a 2 ½-year-old and a newborn. Needless to say, they are quite busy. A er moving to Fishers three years ago, Lindsey decided to be a stay-at-home mom, but still continued to do freelance public relations and marketing. Ma ’s job that brought them to Indiana was with Boar’s Head, which happens to have gluten-free products, and is what led to Lindsey’s connection with Shelia Ca erty and Living Without’s Gluten-Free Food Allergy Fest.

Shelia Ca erty, who is gluten intolerant and has a nursing background, started the Gluten-Free Living Now Expo four years ago. It is a not-for-pro t business that started as a local grassroots expo and has grown tremendously over the years. is could be due in part to the many people who have been diagnosed with celiac, gluten sensitivities, or gluten intolerance, or who are just wanting a healthier lifestyle.

Enter Lindsey, who became involved last year when her husband’s company was asked to be a sponsor at the Expo. She started working PR and marketing for the show, which included advertising, social medial and press releases. However, she didn’t stop there. You might be familiar with the magazine Living Without, which just changed its name to Living Without’s Gluten Free & More. It is a national publication that not only caters to those with celiac, gluten intolerance, and gluten sensitivities, but also to those who have other types of food allergies. Having been diagnosed myself as having celiac, I have been a subscriber for years. Living Without, which is based out of Norwalk,

CT, is not known to go around buying small expos. According to Lindsey, “Last October, Living Without became interested in ge ing into the consumer show world.” Lindsey was instrumental in this process, which took a few months, as she helped pitch (PR-wise) the idea of having Living Without buy Indianapolis’ expo.

Not only did they buy Indianapolis’ show, they expanded to include other shows across the country. ey just had a show in San Diego in May, and they will be having a show in Portland, Oregon in September. In 2015, they have seven shows planned, which will keep Lindsey busy, as she is continuing to work under the Living Without umbrella as Public Relations, Marketing, and Volunteer Coordinator. Each year, the Fest has grown, and this year it will be held at the State Fairgrounds since outgrowing e Fountains in Carmel. e vendors have increased, too, from 80 last year to 100 this year. Not only did the name change this year, but also new at Living Without’s Gluten-Free Food Allergy Fest will be an authors’ and bloggers’ booth at every show, which Lindsey was responsible for adding.

Lindsey herself does not need to eat gluten-free; however, a er working in the gluten-free community, she has learned a lot about the implications of gluten and has taken a di erent approach to how she and her family eat. Lindsey has realized that her quiet Midwest life has become a lot busier than what she had imagined, but she said she wouldn’t change a thing.

RUTH’S CHRIS STEAK HOUSENORTHSIDE2727 E. 86th St., Indianapolis317-844-1155ruthschrisindy.com

A er 20 years, local franchise Ruth’s Chris is closing its Northside Indianapolis doors. e notably gorgeous building that has been home to the impeccably prepared let will no longer don the world-famous Ruth’s Chris logo—nor will the vintage building serve up the area’s best steak. But this isn’t the end for the Northside staple: Ruth’s Chris is reopening mid-August in the innovative Ironworks Keystone building just blocks from where the famed restaurant has made Indy salivate for ne dining for two decades.

is is not your daddy’s steakhouse. e new Ruth’s Chris will be right at home in the Ironworks Keystone location. e ve-story building encompasses the new “live, shop, eat, do” lifestyle, o ering modern apartments, shopping, dining and activities

in one stunning building at the corner of Keystone Avenue and 86th Street.

“It’s an honor to shut down such a historic place and open a groundbreaking location,” says operating partner and general manager Ryan Craig. “Change is inevitable and we couldn’t ask for a be er scenario.” e Carmel native insists the combination of the Ruth’s Chris reputation and high standards will help take the Northside location to the next level. “I feel like a kid in a candy store,” he gushes when discussing the elaborate design boards that have peppered the lobby on Keystone Avenue for months.

Teasers of elegant scrolled iron, rich vibrant fabrics, splashes of Art Deco wall sconces and a hint of glam have created an excitement among the sta and restaurant

patrons. An inviting lounge area will tempt guests to sit and enjoy one of the famed restaurant’s trendy cocktails and the dining area rich in warmth and sophistication is breathtaking.

Craig admits there is a standard that Ruth’s Chris has created, but goes on to discuss these changes come with enough autonomy to create a local staple tailor-made for the Indianapolis area. “When you surround yourself with this much quality and experience,” he says of the highly trained veteran sta , “it’s going to be good.” e restaurant team holds a wealth of wisdom of the Ruth’s Chris way. e seasoned management leads each night into success alongside the waitsta , kitchen and front-of-the-house sta . e level of training each employee, down to the hostesses, must master is a testament to the Ruth’s Chris standards. Yearly recerti cation for each employee helps enhance every guest’s dining experience.

In the new location, Craig is con dent Ruth’s Chris will continue to deliver a high quality dining experience despite a high saturation of other high-end restaurants in the Keystone area. “Ruth’s Chris has always found ways to lead the market, cater to the guest, and maintain our high expectations.” On-site meat cu ing, a 3,000-square-foot patio and the ability to cater parties of 200 or more are just some of the new amenities o ered later this summer.

One of the new elements coming to the revamped location is cocktail service. Tableside iPads help hone in on speci c tastes of the guests, and liquid chef Jordan Ward is on sta to make sure Ruth’s Chris is the leader in the Indianapolis bar

experience. Tasked with keeping up with cocktail trends, the craft beer explosion, the trendy infusion market and the wine experience, the Ruth’s Chris liquid chef rises to the challenge. Wine on tap and partnerships with Fuzzy Vodka and Elijah Craig bourbon keep an excitement around the bar. Events like blending seminars and “Women of Whisky” push the restaurant beyond the limits of steakhouse.

Admitting the beer market has changed dramatically in the past few years, Craig knows the younger generation of knowledgeable bar patrons desires a beer and wine selection tailored to the region instead of what a franchise will dictate nationwide. When a guest asks what local beers are on tap, Ruth’s Chris proudly calls eleven of their twelve nitro taps local gems. Seeing their craft beer sales soar from 1 percent to 20 percent of total sales in the past six months is proof positive to local management that now is the time to expand this portion of their bar experience. Having a few popular light beers on tap is no longer acceptable. “We have to be different, creative, and willing to grow,” Craig insists. Northwest Indiana’s

3 Floyds, Midwest favorite Thr3e Wise Men and central Indiana’s Sun King have claimed taps at the Ruth’s Chris bar, along with Switzerland brew Storm & Anchor, which has Indiana ties.

Along with top-notch beverages, the new era of Ruth’s Chris Keystone will cater to the gastronomy movement. “We’ve got things up our sleeve that will blow you away,” Craig says. Patrons will still be able to enjoy a perfect filet, but also be able to munch on smaller portions and a more gourmet, modern cuisine. BLT sliders, salmon chips, and Filet Oscar are just the teaser to a menu that will make the longtime Ruth’s Chris patron happy, as well as lure a new generation of foodies. An emphasis on local organics helps round out a new dining experience at Ruth’s Chris. “After four record-breaking years, it’s time for a business change. This new location will be a destination restaurant,” Craig says.

Ready to experience more from Ruth’s Chris than just a meal and a great beverage? Try one of the quarterly wine tastings with 40-50 handpicked wines.

Celebrity bartender nights (where a portion of sales goes to a local charity), evenings featuring a three-course experience at a great price, Wine Down Wednesdays and live music on the spacious patio will continue to add variety to the dining experience unlike any other restaurant in the high-end area.

Beyond the Ironworks Keystone location, the catering offered via Ruth’s Chris brings the dining experience to any guest’s off-site event. From a backyard BBQ to a large wedding, the local franchise will take over a home kitchen and bring the Ruth’s Chris experience, including the 500-degree plates, to your home. “We’ll take over your kitchen and leave it cleaner than when you left it,” Craig chuckles.

Whether it’s a date night, a girl’s night out, an anniversary celebration or just Wednesday, Ruth’s Chris at Ironworks Keystone will satisfy every dining need and special occasion.

WHAT THE LIFELINE LAW COULD MEAN TO YOUR FAMILYWriter / Kara Reibel

A teenager is at a party with friends, drinks in excess and passes out. His friends freak out, afraid they would get into trouble with their parents or the law, so they all ee the scene. As a result of not receiving any medical assistance, their friend dies. is scenario has played out over and over again—in fact, since 2004, 21 Indiana kids under the age of 21 have lost their lives to alcohol poisoning.

It unfortunately takes horrible statistics such as these in order to save the lives of others. As a result of these young Hoosier lives lost, and many others across the country, states are passing laws to encourage the necessary call for help, allowing immunity to those who contact the authorities.

Senator Jim Merri is at the forefront of this movement with the laws he has wri en to protect the lives of teens who have made foolish choices—deadly choices, in many cases. “If these kids could reach out and call for help for someone who has made a mistake, lives would be saved, lessons learned…and hopefully eliminating the tragic outcome if help is not sought,” states Senator Merri .

ese preventable circumstances are only made worse when someone is afraid to seek help. e Lifeline Law removes these hurdles to encourage seeking help with the goal of avoiding tragedies. As taken from the website indianalifeline.org, the Lifeline Law provides immunity for the crimes of public intoxication, minor possession, minor consumption, and minor transport to persons who reveal themselves to law enforcement while seeking medical assistance for a person su ering from an alcohol-related health emergency.

In order to receive immunity, individuals must demonstrate that they are acting in good faith by completing ALL of the following: (1) provide their full name and any other relevant information requested by law enforcement o cers, (2) remain on the scene until law enforcement and emergency medical assistance arrives, and (3) cooperate with authorities on the scene.

e law will not interfere with law enforcement procedures or limit the ability to prosecute for other criminal o enses such as providing to a minor, operating while intoxicated, or possession of a controlled substance.

E ective July 1, 2014, the law was expanded to allow immunity for those individuals who are underage and under the in uence while reporting certain crimes. Removing disincentives will hopefully save more lives by reporting incidents without prosecution concerns for those calling 911. “We want

kids to do the right thing and make a good decision,” says Senator Merri .

Michele Whelchel of Indiana Youth Services has been working with the senator to aid in the awareness campaign of this law under Make Good Decisions. “Indiana Youth Services Association is honored to help in the awareness of this life-saving law. Make Good Decisions strives to educate teens and young adults about the dangers of underage drinking and destructive behaviors, and the Indiana Lifeline Law,” states Whelchel.

Senator Merri consults with other legislators across the country, encouraging similar legislation modeled a er Indiana’s statute. “Alcohol-related teen deaths happen everywhere: the goal is prevention. If we can’t prevent kids from underage drinking, we need to provide a literal lifeline when they get into trouble with drinking,” says Senator Merri .

Education is the key. Teens need to know about the law, and understand that if/when they are placed in a compromising position, there is help available. is help is designed to protect them and to save lives. It’s time to make the call and save a life.

ere is always excitement that surrounds a new construction project…especially one that has the intent to serve the community. Driving south down Olio Road, just across the street from HSE High School, you now see the permanent home of Crosspoint. e 16,000 square feet of e ciently used space contains some traditional amenities that we have come to expect in a church, including a space for the tribe to gather (as the congregation is referred to at Crosspoint), as well as extensive children’s environments and some basic o ce space.

ere are some nontraditional areas here, as well. is is where you start to get a glimpse into the culture driving this organization. As you enter, you immediately encounter a generous lobby that includes a co ee bar and comfortable seating, and it will soon include a small indoor kids’ play area. e intent behind this design is what is uncommonly known as “ ird Space.” Most people tend to spend the majority of their time either at home ( rst Space) or work (Second Space). Curt Walters, Lead Pastor at Crosspoint, told me, “We speci cally intended to create a comfortable space inviting the community to conduct meetings, share a moment with a friend or just relax in solitude for a few minutes in the middle of a hectic day.”

In addition to the nontraditional ird Space, there are conventional areas with unconventional applications. Sunday Service takes place in a space that can best be described as resembling an auditorium, which has been named e Venue. is space comes equipped with a stage, sophisticated lighting, concert quality sound system and a 465-person seating capacity. Curt explained to me that this space was designed a er carefully considering a void in the community for handling productions and events of this type and capacity. In addition to Sunday Service, the community has the ability to take advantage of this facility by contacting the church and making arrangements to secure the space.

We are closed on Sunday.

is organization has a di erent vibe, as evidenced by small things that are done a li le di erently, resulting in big impacts. e co ee (provided free during Sunday Service) is purchased from Land of a ousand Hills Co ee where proceeds are helping restore dignity and combat poverty in Rwanda. e music is progressive and it isn’t uncommon to hear a song or two from U2, American Authors and other pop culture groups that are tied into the service message. e lights are intentionally kept low, which provides an atmosphere of shelter and protection.

Another unique approach to re-enforcing the weekly message has been giving people who have found connection at Crossspoint an opportunity to share their story. is has been accomplished in a variety of forms, including inviting people to the stage to talk with Curt (pre-planned, of course) during service. People have also told their story while being lmed and had the resulting feature played during service. I have come to discover that sharing your story honestly is an impactful way to connect with the people around you. Also by sharing these stories, the people listening have found solace knowing that other people have experienced (and survived) something they may be going through. I have personally bene ed from the sharing of others’ stories during service.

Crosspoint’s mo o is: “We don’t have it all together And we’ll never

expect you to either. Crosspoint is a place where it’s OK not to have it all together. Sure, there are holes in this. But we’re OK with that.” Regular a endees come back week a er week for the real-world topics that directly relate to life…building into people, ge ing more out of friendships, entrepreneurship, and supporting signi cant others, to name a few.

What really sets a good organization apart are not the four walls in which it resides, but rather the people inside those same four walls. As the saying goes, “Here is the church, here is the steeple. Open up the doors and see all the people.” Whether it’s the lead pastor on the stage, the other members si ing right next to you, or the volunteers in the children’s environment, reinforcing values to your children…the strength and longevity of a church is in its culture. Regardless of the reason you decide to walk through the doors, my guess is that you will nd a reason to stay. Although the building has gone up rather quickly, the foundation has been 389 weeks in the making.

Matt Quinn moved to Fishers in 2008 along with his wife and two children. Based on the family friendly lifestyle they determined that Fishers would be their permanent home. Matt graduated from Miami of Ohio and Xavier University and has grown multiple small businesses.

Writer / Hans Maldonado with assistance from Dr. Joe Lauer Photographer / Eric Meyer

Once a year, Optimus Park in Broad Ripple plays host to a spectacular gathering of both craft beers and craft beer lovers in the form of the Indiana Microbrewers Festival. Located a few blocks north of Broad Ripple Ave. near the Indianapolis Art Center, this event becomes better organized every year. Lines for food, beer, and lavatories were as minimal as can be expected at a beer festival with approximately 5,000 people in attendance. Both Dr. Lauer and myself were in attendance, as usual. While Dr. Lauer found some new and interesting local/regional breweries, I must admit that it was difficult to ignore the tried and true breweries I know and love. It is also nice to know someone who can walk onto the back line and get beer more quickly.

JOE: For those who make it beyond Indianapolis, there are some interesting new breweries worthy of attention. 18TH STREET BREWERY (Gary, IN) got their brewer from PIPEWORKS BREWING (Chicago, IL), which was named the best new brewery of 2013 according to ratebeer.com. Grapefruit Dead Imperial IPA and Hunter’s Double Milk Stout were both quite good.

BARE HANDS BREWING (Granger, IN) was serving a Thai p.a.(sic) with hints of lime, ginger, and tea. It was quite interesting, and their other IPAs and Pale Ales were good, as well.

EVIL CZECH BREWERY (Mishawaka, IN) poured a Bohemian (that means Czech-style as opposed to German) Pilsner that took me right back to Prague. Pilsner

may seem boring to some, but good representations of the style are not exactly abundant in Indiana.

ZWANZIGZ BREWERY (Columbus, IN) served a golden blueberry ale that was full of blueberry flavor and aroma and yet was incredibly dry and refreshing.

HANS: I had that blueberry ale, and it was indeed delicious. For those who think fruit beer means sweet and cloying, read: It does not have to!

JOE: From DANNY BOY (soon to be open in The Village of West Clay in Carmel, IN), there was a solid black IPA. NEW DAY MEADERY (Fountain Square) does not make beer, but their mead ranges from sweet and fruity through bone dry. They even make a mead with hops! Imperial Raspberry Breakfast Magpie was an outstanding mead.

SCARLET LANE BREWERY (McCordsville, IN) won a Brewer’s Cup award for their Vivian Red IPA, which showed as well as advertised over the weekend. Their coffee coconut stout was dry and balanced.

HANS: My friend Leah from TAXMAN (Bargersville, IN) was pouring a Belgian Dubbel that was bone dry and incredibly attenuated (this means that there was no leftover sugar after yeast finishes its meal), as I have come to expect from this brewery. When people think that Belgian style beer is either too sweet or too syrupy, it is usually because of left over sugar, or under-attenuation. The Dubbel had the typical

raisiney character of a Dubbel, but it was truly multidimensional in its flavor.

UNION BREWING (Carmel, IN) focuses on cask-conditioned beer (meaning that the beer is carbonated in the keg) served from traditional hand-drawn beer engines (handpull). I’ve never visited England (home of cask-conditioning), but tasting the Monon Mild, with its grassy hops and soft mouth-feel, from Union is probably the next best thing.

BARLEY ISLAND (Noblesville,IN) was serving a Saison (Belgian) that was crisp, dry, and refreshing, and yet was packing around 8% abv. Owner/Brewmaster Jeff Eaton is a more-than-competent brewer and a highly regarded judge.

BRUGGE BRASSERIE (Indianapolis, IN) rarely fails to bring a little sourness, and their Diamond Kings of Heaven 2014 did not disappoint. While the exact recipe varies from year to year, Owner/Brewmaster Ted Miller had been using the same wine barrel for some time, and it is populated with the appropriate microfauna to produce the lactic acidity for which Diamond Kings is known. After witnessing inexperienced festivalgoers spitting out Diamond Kings at a previous festival, there is always a password required to sample Diamond Kings. When it comes to sour beer—If you know, then you know.

On the American side of beer styles, Ted Miller also produces beer under the Outliers label. From Outliers, there was a strong Blonde Ale brewed with botanicals, Chinese rice

wine yeast, and then aged in a brandy barrel for about a month. This beer had stunning complexity and a very refreshing quality.

JOE: That was also one of my favorite beers this year!

HANS: TRITON BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) produced two incredibly unique and outstanding beers for the festival. French Toast Stout and French Toast Stout with Strawberries could not have been more aptly named and either one would be a showstopper on most occasions.

I have said before that BIER BREWERY (Indianapolis, IN) makes the best and only pumpkin ale that anyone should drink. For the festival, they came with a barrel-aged Pumpkin Porter worthy of a best-in-show award.

UPLAND BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) came with a bunch of their Lambics, of which I was only able to taste the 2014 Peach Lambic, poured by the brewer himself, Caleb Staton. His Lambics have gotten better and better over the years.

BLACK ACRE BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) was pouring Bitter Life Coffee IPA. It was a blend of American IPA and locally roasted coffee, the result of which was slightly citrusy from the hops and roasty and slightly bitter from the coffee.

TOW YARD BREWING (Indianapolis, IN) came in strong with their Horsepower Double Pale Ale, which is mildly citrusy but restrained enough in its bitterness that it could be a crossover beer for those hop-haters out there. It hides its 8+abv very well. Owner Mike Deweese also brought some gems from his cellar, which are certainly not available anywhere other than in his company, and rest assured, the right beer improves over time just like the finest of wines. I tasted 12-year-old World Wide Stout from Dogfish Head and 10-year-old Double Bastard from Stone. And remember that 2004 Beast from Avery that you thought would never mellow? Well, it did, and it was pretty good. Thank you, Mr. Deweese!

TIN MAN BREWING COMPANY (Evansville, IN) was serving a stout that had been aged in a Maker’s Mark barrel, and it was outstanding.

This festival has gotten better with each passing year. The available space has more than doubled since 2007, while the attendance is still pretty much the same. It rarely feels crowded, and there are plenty of

food and washing facilities. Thankfully, we dodged the 90+ degree heat that is usually a factor at the Microbrewers Festival. Joe and I agree that it would not be possible to taste even half of what is typically available at this event, so please understand that this article is inherently incomplete. Just know that this is the premier beer event in Indianapolis each and every year.

I’ve had back pain off and on most of my life, not debilitating…that is, until about the age of 40. The pain eventually became unbearable. With a very demanding job and little time to focus on my health, I sought the help of a few doctors. This is when I discovered most doctors want to pat you on the hand and tell you to “learn to live with it!” Reality is…you have “lived with it” and if you weren’t at the breaking point you wouldn’t be in their offi ce!

I began to wonder if I could bear to live the rest of my life in this much pain…was it possible or even worth it? Dr. Hall is unaware, but he probably saved my life…I was very close to giving up.

After the fi rst appointment at Midwest Pain & Spine, I knew I was somewhere special.

Suddenly there was hope and an actual plan! Dr. Hall went straight to work to fi nd the source of the pain, which actually turned out to be a birth deformity. He discovered the source of pain that no other doctor ever took the time to. Then Dr. Hall worked with me to fi nd the most effective treatment for my particular spine issues.

Now my pain is managed. I still work too hard, but now I’m not miserable…plus I live a more active lifestyle, which is a much unexpected blessing.

Thanks, Dr. Hall and wonderful staff, for giving me my life back!

Balance, Agility, Strength, and Endurance: these four words summarize the experience at B.A.S.E. Fitness Inc., Parkour. Popularized by American Ninja Warrior and popular action movies such as Casino Royale, e Bourne Legacy, and Brick Mansions, Parkour training is now available in Fishers!

Ayren Steuerwald combines his skills as a professional dancer, 4th degree black belt, and military veteran with a desire to push himself into realms of unknown physical boundaries. He became the rst U.S. citizen living in the USA to become certi ed to instruct Parkour through the rigorous London-based A.D.A.P.T. program.

What is most impressive is that the facility is not the least bit intimidating. e age range of their clients is vast, as are their backgrounds and body types. “Anyone may participate in Parkour; on TV you see the extreme participants, not the average enthusiasts,” says instructor Michelle Hewi .

All participants must pass safety tests as they advance through the levels. e foundation of Parkour is safety and progressions. “We build upon the basics, and through the method and strategic physical principles of Parkour, participants realize their depths of inner strength,” says Tammy Steuerwald, Ayren’s wife and co-owner.

e B.A.S.E. Parkour course is movable, with a miniature version of the equipment on the front table. e instructors create and re-design the layout, allowing for endless possibilities for the Parkour experience. Assistant coach Eve Eggleston adds, “Changing up the course expands and feeds the creative element for those who participate.”

Working alongside local police and re ghters for safety and emergency evacuation drills, B.A.S.E. Parkour is developing a Parkour-based program for individuals with impaired vision, as well as injuries requiring prosthetic aid.

Parkour is a great experience that allows you to dig deep within yourself and draw strength and support from fellow practitioners while under careful monitoring from the instructors. “ e more you’re into it, the more avenues you nd to challenge yourself in ways you hadn’t thought of before. We have clients who have lost a lot of weight through Parkour; we have kids who love the discipline and challenge, and entire families love doing this together. is is a sport that is open to all who wish to challenge themselves and still have fun,” says Tammy.

ere are many levels of classes for Parkour, including a special curriculum designed for 5- to 8-year-olds. In addition to Parkour, B.A.S.E. also o ers fundamental MMA classes (mixed martial arts), hip hop dance classes, birthday parties and Capoeira (Brazilian form of martial arts).

Is it possible to be a victim and not even know it? Yes it is…especially if you are relatively new at this “life” thing (i.e., teenager). Many teenagers just don’t have enough life experiences or confidence to realize that a bad gut feeling they have might really be something important that needs to be addressed. It is for this reason that the Red Flags Campaign was started, over a year ago, through Advocates for Children and Families (AFCF) in The Cherish Center in Noblesville. This campaign began as a way to meet the kids where they are, in social media, to identify the red flags of victimization.

Amanda Calvin was the innovator for this idea, under Wendy Rayburn, the Executive Director. “I knew they were looking for an education part [of victimization]. The light bulb [for the idea] was ‘warning signs.’ That translated to creative posters that would identify the red flag. All the posters are black and white with the red flag.” A unique warning sign is individually addressed in each poster. “Visually, we wanted to show the raw emotion of how one feels when these warning signs or red flags find their way into a relationship,” says Calvin. “The intent is to get their attention with the visual and then educate through additional resources and on-to-one mentoring.” Calvin adds that this initial series focuses on how the unhealthy behaviors make you feel. Another series will illustrate the positive things you can do to self-protect.

Wendy Rayburn explains: “The best prevention tactics are not scare tactics. We, as people, tend to gravitate toward the fun and happy stuff. Okay, well, in prevention, that is the best way to promote any educational piece. What’s the ‘good’ side of it? What does the ‘good’ look like?” stated Wendy. “You’re talking about encouraging ‘good.’ That’s what mentoring supports.” Teaching the kids what is good and reinforcing the good will make those things that are actually “bad” more obvious to them.

e genius piece of this equation is that they have created a leadership group called the Advisory Board and Mentoring Program, consisting of 10-12 kids, ages 14-18 years old. Who else would know the issues and relevant media be er than kids the same age as the target group? ese kids work closely with Amanda and Wendy to send a relevant message at the appropriate time. e campaign is able to make an impact because it focuses on social media as a platform to communicate.

Since technology and teen issues are constantly evolving, this leadership group is intended to keep the campaign ever-changing and current. ese individuals are also advocates for this campaign in their own schools and with their peers, spreading the message through word of mouth and just by being knowledgable to recognize and speak out if they see these red ags.

“ ey create the campaign, keeping it from being ve years behind the times,” says Rayburn. “Kids wearing T-shirts saying ‘this is where you get information’ is more e ective than adults lecturing to them. Kids listen more to other kids than to adults,” says Rayburn.

e Red Flag Campaign focuses on harmful behaviors and unhealthy relationships. ese areas include: Fear/Intimidation, Dating/Relationships, Boundaries, and Social Media Intimidation (also called cyber bullying).

Relationship issues manifest in many ways, in addition to sexual or

physical abuse. ey can include: excessive texting and phone calls, name-calling and threats, isolation, jealousy and possessiveness. ey are demeaning, threatening or intimidating. “Teens need to learn to trust their gut in all things in all ways,” says Rayburn, “and we need to help them not be afraid to ask for help.”

What makes the campaign so invaluable is that it is empowering teens and their parents. All parties need to know the signs of victimization so they can steer the person toward ge ing the proper help, ultimately eliminating it from happening again.

Research shows victimization starts young. It could be as simple as: “Somebody took my backpack.” How it is dealt with can set a tone for how intimidation triggers later in life. Le ing things slide or ignoring early signs can encourage that cycle to continue into more complex issues with age and situations.

Red Flags posters have been created for use in schools. Each poster identi es a safe place to report or seek help for victims, most o en the guidance counselors. e campaign images placed on social media direct victims to hotline numbers or links to resources. ere is also a presence on Instagram, led by the Advisory Board and Mentoring Program. Within the rst year of the campaign, posters and yers have been distributed to libraries and schools within Hancock and Madison Counties. AFCF will continue to grow the campaign within additional libraries and schools in Hamilton County.

“We want to educate the kids without being in-your-face or implementing a stu y curriculum,” says Rayburn. “We have a naturally ing partnership with Prevail, a victim advocacy group, with a prevention curriculum that we weave in, but Red Flags is the social connector. It’s a fast, relevant and non-invasive approach to sharing information. is is what makes Red Flags a campaign,” says Rayburn.

How can you get involved? Advocate for the Red Flags Campaign to be in your child’s school or community. Everyone can be a voice in preventing unhealthy relationships. For more information about ge ing involved, please call the AFCF o ce at 317-773-3275 or you can go to afc ndiana.org or check out Red Flags on Facebook.

When asked, near the end of the interview, what is the important message that they want to express, Rayburn and Calvin replied: “To reach kids, where they are, to help empower them to know what kinds of things are harmful in relationships and what is healthy. We want kids to advocate for each other, looking for red ags of victimization.”

We hope to earn yourtrust too!!!

Sadly, summer break is coming to an end, but the back to school fashion fun is just beginning. Although students will soon be hi ing the books, that doesn’t mean they have to hit the mall to nd the ho est trends. Fishers residents only have to look right in their backyard for a fresh new local boutique—Lily & Sparrow. is boutique, owned and operated by two 20-something sisters, prides itself on promoting and accenting natural beauty by o ering quality trends at a ordable prices.

With Lily & Sparrow’s budget-friendly prices no cause for ba le with your teen, let’s talk modesty. Yes, modesty, the dreaded word that strikes resistance into almost every teen girl’s heart. So o en this term conjures up images of being covered from head to toe and devoid of any personality or style. is doesn’t have to be the case. Modest fashions don’t have to be anti-mainstream. It o en just means being more creative with the styling. Here are two great looks from Lily & Sparrow to demonstrate how easily this can be achieved.

BACK TO SCHOOL TRENDS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES

We don’t want to forget about the boys! Vardagen is just the answer for teen guys looking for ECLECTIC tanks, t-shirts and hoodies. This emerging brand is also located in the heart of Fishers and is strong on design. They print everything themselves on quality, hand-selected garments. Their styles are perfect for guys who don’t want to look like they’re trying too hard but also don’t want to get lost in the masses. Vardagen also has fashions for women and children. The t-shirt modeled is unique with its HIPSTER FLAIR and true American pride—perfect for standing out in a crowd.

This look is BOHO CHIC using dark skinny jeans, a long neutral tank and a beautiful sleeveless open-front crocheted vest. To complete this look, a purple and turquoise STATEMENT NECKLACE that isn’t too over-the-top for school was added to make the outfi t pop.

Another look combines a simple summer fl oral dress with a cropped denim and lace vest. Because dresses are so comfortable, they are perfect for all-day wear. The vest gives this outfi t a LITTLE EDGE and it’s another great piece that can be used YEAR-ROUND. For this ensemble, a shorter gold Aztec-inspired necklace was paired with a longer mint and brown lucite statement chain. Sweet little neutral ballet fl ats like the ones paired with both outfi ts are wardrobe staples as they continue to be a fashionable alternative to heels.

The Miss Indiana Pageant, held June 18-21 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center, included 34 contestants. Only one young lady earned the title of Miss Indiana 2014: Audra Casterline of Fishers. Within hours of winning, she began making appearances and will eventually make about 50 in all. She stays busy preparing for her next competition in September when she will represent Indiana in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, NJ.

“I was completely shocked, thrilled and overjoyed,” says Casterline after hearing her name as the winner. “I have always dreamt of holding the title of Miss Indiana.” Her humbled reaction was embraced by thousands of followers on YouTube (youtube.com/watch?v=UZjeBaLcoBQ.)

“I love how the pageant encourages growth as a whole person,” says Casterline. “For example, the swimsuit competition isn’t about being thin but rather being physically fit. The only way to develop a winning swimsuit figure is by working out at the gym and gaining muscle mass. I also love having a platform that I am passionate about. And the judges’ interview encourages us [contestants] to have a thorough and robust understanding of current events.”

The Miss Indiana and Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen are both official state pageants of the Miss America Organization. The Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant operates at the local, state, and national level. Locally, Casterline won the title Miss Hoosier Heartland prior to competing for Miss Indiana.

“The Miss America Organization is the number one provider of scholarship assistance to young women in the world,” says Casterline. In fact, last year, this organization, along with its local and state affiliates, provided more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.

The Miss Indiana Pageant consists of young women from all around Indiana between ages 17 and 24 who compete in three preliminary nights of competition in these areas: evening wear, lifestyle and fitness in swimwear, talent, onstage question, and a 10-minute private interview with judges.

PLATFORM WITH PERSONAL PASSIONCasterline’s platform is titled “Food for Thought: Increasing the Awareness of Eating Disorders.” “I want to help young men and women relate to food in a healthy way, to understand that calories should not be restricted. Instead we should work to incorporate food calories in our diet. Carbohydrates and fats, for example, have been demonized in the media. But carbs like whole grains and fats like nuts and olives are actually essential to several important bodily functions.” She is eager to help others by sharing her real-life struggle with anorexia.

“I didn’t realize I was following a prescription of our culture,” admits Casterline, who lost 30 pounds between her freshman and junior years at college. She said it was a gradual process that began with her cutting calories so she could feel more in control. Yet, in actuality, she was losing her grip without ever realizing this downward spiraling cycle. Some of her symptoms were headaches, inability to focus, lack of energy, and trouble sleeping at night.

Her wake-up call came about when her parents intervened. They started questioning her about her daily intake of calories. She hadn’t realized how few calories she was consuming. She explains how one of the state pageant directors also spoke up because he was concerned about her weight loss. Casterline says, “This organization really cares about women and it helped me get away from my eating disorder.”

VOCAL TALENT RESONATES IN FAMILYFor the talent portion of the pageant, Casterline sang “Over the Rainbow.” She says, “I’ve always loved communicating with people and performing allows you to impact and communicate with people. I’ve been singing since I was two years old.” She recalls singing her first solo on stage at the Fortville United Methodist Church where she sang “Jesus Loves Me.”

Music is a common bond within her family. Casterline has often sung four-part harmony with her older sister and parents in

churches and nursing homes. Casterline never took voice lessons but did learn by mimicking her mom, studying the way she’d sing a particular note. Ironically, her dad, David Casterline, teaches voices lessons in Fishers at Michele’s Studio. michelesstudio.com.

Coincidentally, Casterline’s sister, Ashley (Casterline) Schacht and her mom, Anita Casterline, each competed in the Miss Indiana Pageant at 19 years old. ey both were contestant number 8, they both placed 3rd runner-up, and yes, just as you’d guess, they both performed vocally for the talent portion.

One year, Casterline and her sister competed for Miss Indiana simultaneously; her sister placed second runner-up. ey represent the rst pair of sisters ever to compete in this event.

In retrospect, Casterline cherishes her past when she says, “Our best home videos and my favorite memories include being able to sing with my family. is is one piece of our family dynamic that I will always hold very dear.”

Crowned at 23 years old, Casterline turned 24 one week a er the pageant. She graduated from Anderson University with honors in Bible and Religion with a minor in Spanish. Her career ambition is to become a physician assistant.

She is training thoroughly for Miss America, including the swimsuit portion. She’s been sponsored by Core Pilates and Fitness in Carmel (corepilatesand tness.com) and works out four days a week, two hours each day.

Be sure to watch Audra Casterline, our Fishers neighbor, as she represents Miss Indiana competing for the Miss America title on the ABC network, September 14. She will sing her song once again: “Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.” Her dream of winning Miss Indiana came true. Winning on the national level resembles the feat of bluebirds that y beyond the rainbow. Her renewed vision may include winning Miss America as she asks, “If happy li le bluebirds y beyond the rainbow, why, oh why can’t I?”

Writer / Elizabeth Blosh

Summer is winding down and that means it’s time for the kiddos to be back in school. Lots of schools o er wonderful hot lunch programs, but maybe it’s time to consider the bene ts of packing your own lunch. Besides being cost e ective, packing a lunch can give you many dietary bene ts. To help you get out of your brown bag blues, I have some helpful tips.

PRE-PLANKeeping your refrigerator and cupboards stocked with the groceries you need for packing a healthy lunch will keep you on track. Pre-plan your week’s meals and get everything in one trip before the week begins.

BALANCEPacking a lunch allows you not only to control the portions, but it ensures your kids (and yourself) are ge ing a balanced meal. I recommend two servings of veggies, one serving of fruit, a healthy protein and appropriate carbs to keep the brain and body alert throughout the day.

SPICE UP YOUR SANDWICHUsing oil and vinegar in your tuna salad or chicken salad instead of mayo creates a tasty sandwich that doesn’t run as big a health risk. See recipe for sandwich switch-up.

DITCH THE RANCHUsing ranch dressing to get your kids to eat vegetables is a thing of the past. Make your own dressings at home with oil and vinegar and some seasoning, and put that in the lunchbox. Besides being used for the kids’ veggie dip, you can use it on your adult lunch salads.

LEAVE A NOTEWrite on the brown bag or leave “XOXO, Mom” on the napkin inside. Leaving words of love and encouragement to be found during the day is a great way to let your loved ones know you are always thinking about them. Consider it a brown bag text message.

Hopefully, these tips will keep you and your family happy and healthy this school season!

NO MAYO TUNA SALAD SANDWICH (Serves 4)

INGREDIENTS- 2 (6 ounce) packets of tuna- 1 T red wine vinegar- 1 T extra-virgin olive oil- 1 t grated lemon peel- 2 t fresh lemon juice- 2 T diced red onions- 2 T finely chopped Kalamata

olives- salt- Fresh ground black pepper- 8 slices seven-grain bread- sliced avocado- sliced tomato

DIRECTIONSIn a bowl, mix together the tuna, vinegar, oil, lemon juice, onions & olives.
