  • 6 shers COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER | AUGUST 2013

    | Whitney Mucha

Do you remember Election Day, November 6, 2012? If you were living in Fishers, you likely are still recovering from the confusion surrounding the two

questions found on the ballot. With several scenario outcomes, heads were spinning as voters contemplated how to answer each question to vote, town or city for Fishers. Question #1 stated, Shall the Town of Fishers and Fall Creek Township reorganize as a single political subdivision? Question #2 stated, Shall the Town of Fishers change into a city? There were compelling reasons from each side offered to residents for several months before the election. After this hot button issue was put to a vote, a majority of Fishers residents answered no to Questions #1 and yes to Question #2 resulting in a combination that sent Fishers on its journey from town to city.

Now, Fishers must quickly prepare for the rst election of its city government. The rst Mayor, city council members, and city clerk will take of ce on January 1, 2015 when Fishers of cially becomes a city. Changes to Indiana State law code IC 36-4-1.5-3 effective this July pushed the transition date up from a previously exible option of a 2015 or 2016 effective date.

Since year 2000, the population in Fishers has more than doubled in size to approximately 80,000 residents. The transition from town to city will include dividing the town into city legislative body districts. What wont change when Fishers becomes a city? Indiana Code 36-4-1.5-6 clearly states that the acts, contract, and obligations of the former town will continue and remain unchanged. In addition, all ordinances, rules, and regulations of the former town will continue to be in place for the newly transformed city until amended or repealed.

Since the town verses city controversy has been decided, residents can now focus their attention on potential candidates and their pros and cons. The primary election, held in May 2014 prior to the November general election, will likely serve up exciting debates and opportunities to interact with the candidates. Because the area has a historically high number of Republican supporters, many Republican candidates run

uncontested races in Hamilton County or win a large portion of the votes against their Democrat counterparts. Residents will have a unique opportunity to be a part of the history of governmental change in Fishers, Indiana. Whether you enjoy politics, despise politics, or fall somewhere in the middle; the next 18 months are sure to offer loads of local news highlights, opportunities to get involved in your candidates campaign, and plenty of Vote For Me signs to read while on your daily travels through the Townstrike that City of Fishers.

Most girls only dream of walking down the runway after winning a pageant, wearing a beautiful sequined crown. Many wish they had the courage to audition for the school musical and land a respectable role each time they try. Some teens desire a reputation for not only making great grades in school but also leading others with dignity, appeal and utmost composure as they serve their community.

One such teen seems to have all this glory and more Lauren Boswell, a fteen-year-old resident of Fishers. I knew I wanted to be in pageants when I received my rst post card in the mail in fourth grade, said Lauren, who recently won the USA National Miss title on June 29th in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Although she has won four state titles in the last six years of competition, this represents her rst national title. Prior to this feat, she won Miss Hoosier State Junior Teen. My mom and I went into these pageants without knowing anything about them, said Lauren, who will be a sophomore at Hamilton Southeastern High School, adding with a laugh, She is my momager, and has stuck by me since the beginning. Together, weve learned a lot along the way.

In talking with Lauren, she made it clear that pageants represent so much more than what people may stereotype them to symbolize. She said her favorite motto is, Its not how you wear the crown; its what you do with it. She added, Wearing the crown is not about beauty but rather helping others. Its about being con dent and helping others to become con dent. Its about bringing out the best in others.

Lauren spends much time volunteering. Her chosen platform is breast cancer awareness, to which she feels emotionally

tied because both of her grandmothers are breast cancer survivors. So far, she has helped raise $1,500 for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. She plans to create a new fundraising event titled, Volley for the Cure because she has a passion for playing volleyball and supporting breast cancer awareness. Last year, she played on the HSE freshman volleyball team, served as team captain and earned the MVP title.

Pageants help with lifelong skills like interviewing and public speaking, said Lauren, who credits these experiences with giving her the con dence needed to audition for school musicals the last three years. She tried out the rst time in seventh grade and got the leading role as Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. Then, she made the spotlight for the next two years in school productions. She plans to audition again next spring as a sophomore.

After winning the USA National Miss title, Lauren is expected to make twenty

appearances within the year. Already, shes visited the Geist Blast on the Bridge wearing her crown, sash, and a genuine smile as she handed out ribbons supporting Susan G. Komen.

Someday, she hopes to compete in the Miss America Outstanding Teen for Indiana and the Miss Teen USA. She has a supportive family including her sister, Taylor, and parents, Kim and Justin Boswell.

Lauren asserted that, These pageants help prepare girls to gain con dence, articulation, poise, and attention to academics, community involvement and volunteerism. Ive made so many friends all over the country. These girls are not catty like you see in the movies. Everyones genuine. Were all American and real.

There is much discussion and reporting today about autism its possible causes and how best to treat a condition affecting as many as one in 50 US school-age

children. This is a 72 percent increase in the diagnosis since 2007. That, in turn, has prompted two relevant questions: Are we experiencing a marked increase in the incidence of autism or, are physicians and others doing a better job of diagnosing the condition, helped in part, by a rising comfort level in talking about autism publicly?

While these conversations continue in academic and medical circles, Damar Services, Inc., has extended its highly-effective autism treatment protocols to serve the Geist area. In early June, Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Autism Services by Damar Specialized Services LLC opened a new clinic at 9905 Fall Creek Rd (intersection of 79th St and Fall Creek Rd).

Damar is the leading provider of treatment, education and other services designed to build better futures for individuals with the most severe and complex intellectual and behavioral challenges. The new Geist clinic speci cally addresses outpatient autism services, and the organization said in a recent news release that its move to northeast Marion County was a recognition of the demand throughout central Indiana for therapeutic services in accessible locations.

ABA is recognized as the best-practice treatment for children with autism, helping them address the challenges with communication, social interaction, and restricted and repetitive behavior common in autism. We recognize that treatment for children with autism extends well beyond the walls of a clinic site and long after the doors are locked for the evening, said Dr. Jim Dalton, child psychologist and Damar president and chief of operations. The most critical component in shaping the behavior of a child with autism takes place in the family home, guided by the parents and caregivers. ABA Autism Services by Damar ensures that

the family is not only engaged in treatment, but guides the treatment of the child, he said in the news release.

With highly trained and experienced staff, a focus on evidence-based treatment and the use of technology, ABA Autism Services by Damar delivers cost-effective treatment that leads to measurable results for each client. Services include ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, parent training, summer programs, evaluations, diagnostics, and evening and weekend hours. In a recent interview with GeistTV.com, Dr. Dalton explained that families increasingly are nding nancial help to cover treatment costs. Many ABA programs are now covered under Medicaid and private insurance programs, he noted.

With more than 97% of those served [all diagnoses] experiencing greater levels of independence and success, Damars innovative and research-informed services have consistently resulted in individuals of all ages acquiring essential communication, social and behavioral skills allowing them to return to their family homes, return to their local schools, return to their communities, and gain greater levels of independence and opportunity, according to the release. We look forward to welcoming new children into our programs and working with their parents, schools and communities to ensure their success, Dalton said.

At a time when museums are struggling to attract visitors and remain relevant in peoples lives, Connor Prairie Interactive History Park has skyrocketed to national attention. Authors Anne Bergeron and Beth Tuttle recently designated

Conner Prairie as a magnetic museum in their book Magnetic, The Art and Science of Engagement. Based on three years of research, the book explores the secret sauce of how Conner Prairie and ve other museums

are succeeding in critical areas including attendance, membership, community, people, nancial stability, and programming.

Curiosity-Driven LearningEllen M. Rosenthal, Conner Prairie president and CEO, credits a shift in policy based on market and visitor research for turning things around. Driving this research was a desire to understand the needs of the community, and who was and wasnt coming to the museum. In 2006 Conner Prairie implemented a new strategic plan based on its research:

Create engaging, fun, and exciting exhibits Add new experiences every year, moving beyond their

original 1836 focus Focus on families and children

While a focus on families and kids may seem obvious, Rosenthal disagreed. For historians this is harder than you would think, she said, because they want to share history, and really, people and kids are interested in experiencing and being hands-on. Weve [since] become masters at what we call immersive history, which is putting people in the experience.

For example, Connor Prairie eliminated most of the breakable items that prevented people from being able to interact with an exhibit. Now they can lie down on the bed or sit on the chair. It changes the entire approach about how you make the visitor feel like theyre part of the experience, Rosenthal said.

This type of curiosity-driven learning also strives to make history a well-rounded experience by incorporating STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) along with nature and the arts into activities whenever possible. All of theses changes were a hit with the public, causing a surge in attendance (322,710 visitors in 2012 alone.)

Community and National LeaderBut Conner Prairie didnt stop there. Management knew that to make these changes long-term, they had to have their volunteers and employees on board. So they developed a new training DVD for their frontline staff, a customer-service approach that focuses on the visitors needs rather than on just delivering information. The training was so successful that the DVD is now being used by 1,500 other museums across the nation to train their employees.

Conner Prairie also realized the importance of being rmly entrenched in the community. We provide a sense of place for Hamilton County, Rosenthal said. Conner Prairie is the second largest tourist attraction in Hamilton County and the eleventh in the region. All of those visitors means that Conner Prairie has a big economic footprint, generating 28 million dollars a year in revenue for Indiana.

As for the future, Rosenthal knows that integrating technology into exhibits, as it has successfully done with its 1863 Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana exhibit, will be key. Its also exploring ways to connect with empty nesters while continuing to foster strong family ties.

Ultimately, Rosenthal sees the result of years of hard work paying off. We had become just the fourth grade eld trip, she said. We were stagnant; we werent thriving. Those days are gone, replaced by a magnetic attraction between Conner Prairie and the visitors and community it serves.

Want to experience Venice but not go far from home? Well, here is the experience for you. Old World Gondoliers in Indianapolis at 337 W. 11th Street, offers fifteen-minute rides for fifteen dollars per person (ten dollars for eighteen and under) along the canal downtown. For seventy five dollars you can also take private rides for two to eight people.

They have two gondolas that accommodate one to eight passengers more if set up for a wedding. Each boat took four years to make, weighs 2,000 pounds empty, is forty feet long, and were constructed by one of two gondola makers still living in Venice.

I rode on il cigno nero one of the first gondolas to leave Venice. There are walk ways and apartments along each side of the downtown canal giving an Italian feel to the tour. We saw many people walking, biking, jogging, and enjoying the sights. The first song the gondoliers always sing is venne-sula-mar which is a well-wishing song for a good voyage.

The gondoliers voice echoes as you pass under a bridge.

One of my favorite songs they sang was caromebien Italian for my dearly beloved. Its a lullaby which our gondolier, Antonio, said his grandmother sang to him as a child. I really enjoyed the ride I took along with my parents, my brother, the publisher of atFishers and her family. We brought some snacks, the parents drank wine, and the kids had chocolate milk and soda.

Gondolas have been around for a thousand years and there have been thousands of gondoliers. Today, just over 300 remain. Gondolas are the taxis for Venice and most are four-person gondolas. Though the grand city of Venice still stands, its facing some rough times. When Leonardo da Vinci designed the city, he predicted it would sink a centimeter every year and he was right! In fact, lower floors are becoming flooded and have pontoon bottoms in order to keep them afloat.

To have a full experience, you can purchase an Italian picnic to eat as you ride along the canal and listen to the music. The gondoliers use long oars to move and steer, and there is a small flag on the bow they use to tell the wind direction so they can adjust their stroke.

If youre looking for a fun family outing or a romantic date, Old World Gondoliers is the adventure for you.

My biggest impression was how peaceful it can be within the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Our gondolier, Antonio, was rowing the entire time but you could hardly feel the boat move. Actually you couldnt feel the boat move at all; we only knew we were moving because the scenery along the canal was changing ever so slowly.

My wife Deidra and I, and our friends Matt and Laurie Quinn, enjoyed a glass of wine along the way, and it was truly peaceful even though we had four kids in the back of the boat. Perhaps the cookies and beverages the kids enjoyed along the way helped create that peace, but I am grateful any way you slice it.

Contrary to the usual scenes of hustle and bustle in downtown, we made our way from point A to point B, and it was very refreshing to see others strolling, biking, running, walking, relaxing on a bench and enjoying the

view of the canal, or having a drink with friends on their balconies along the route.

I have known Jeff Gofredo Hutson, the owner of Old World Gondoliers, for many years and I will tell you, Jeff is

the consummate host who is always attuned to making sure his guests are having the best possible time and experience. This includes the quality of staff he hires in both courtesy and singing ability.

Our gondolier, Antonio, provided a wonderful assortment of songs for us that enhanced the peacefulness and relaxation. I highly recommend you give Old World Gondoliers a chance to show you a wonderfully tranquil experience in the heart of an otherwise very active city.

Fermented Foods & Probiotics| Elizabeth Blessing

By Elizabeth Blessing, MSN, co-founder and chief nutritionist of Green BEAN Delivery

A growing number of foods on the market today claim to improve our health. These items are called functional foods, meaning that they promote health beyond their basic nutritional function. Probiotics, which are live microorganisms found in or added to fermented foods that optimize the bacterial environment of our intestines, are an example of a functional food.

Our intestines contain a mind-boggling number and variety of bacteria, many of which are vital to maintaining a healthy body and supporting digestive function. Some of these bacteria can also be harmful, which is why it is important to maintain an environment in the intestines that favors large numbers and activity of healthful bacteria while limiting the damage caused by harmful bacteria.

How do probiotics work? When a person consumes a product containing probiotics, the bacteria adhere to the intestinal wall where they get to work to benefit the body. The activity of these bacteria is short-lived, and they need to be consumed daily to benefit

human health. The exact mechanism of how probiotics work is still being researched, but one possible benefit is the enhancement of the immune system. Probiotics may also increase the amount and activity of immune cells that help fight infections. Other conditions that may be successfully treated with probiotics include:

Diarrhea in children caused by a rotavirus

Diarrhea associated with use of antibiotic medications in children and adults

Travelers diarrhea Urinary and genital tract infections

    in women

Gastrointestinal conditions such as in ammatory bowel disease, Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis

Infections from Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria associated with conditions such as peptic ulcers, gastritis and gastric cancer

Food allergies and asthma Body weight and obesity Energy levels Autism, ADHD, ADD, dyslexia,

    dyspraxia and obsessive-compulsive disorder

In the U.S., most foods that contain probiotics are forti ed milk and fermented yogurt. They can also be found in fermented ke rs, kombucha, lacto-fermented fruits and vegetables, as well as in supplement form.

The most frequently used probiotics in the food market today are species of Lactobacillus or Bi dobacterium. Because these live cultures can only survive for a limited period of time, foods and supplements containing probiotics have a shorter shelf life and must be properly stored and consumed within a relatively brief period of time to receive maximum bene t. In general, refrigerated foods containing probiotics have a shelf life of 3-6 weeks, whereas the shelf life for supplements containing probiotics is about 12 months.

However, the probiotic content of refrigerated foods is much more stable than that of supplements. Healing with food is always the rst choice and often the best. If capsules/supplements are chosen, make sure the brand is reputable and the viability of the probiotics has been independently veri ed.

A handful of local and regional farmers and artisans, including Fermenti Artisan, Hidden Pond Farms, Traders Point Creamery and Organic Valley, offer yogurt, lacto-fermented vegetable

products, beet kvass, kombucha, cultured butter and cottage cheese. Look to these producers to not only build up and create a healthy gut ora, but also to support local farmers and artisans.

Functional foods in the form of probiotics can do the body good. By seeking out these foods and applying a few safety tips, you will be well on your way to promoting a healthy body and immune system.

Many of us have a nighttime routine we do with our children. My routine with our seven-year-old daughter is going into her room after daddy leaves to talk about what happened during her day. Usually our talks are about a frog dying in her classroom, or the amazing art project she is working on at school. One night during this past school year she said, Mommy, we had a drill today! A drill? What type of drill? was my response. Thinking that it might be a fire drill or tornado drill, my mind wondered what made her bring this up out of the blue. It was a drill that involves a bad man coming into our school, she replied.

My heart stopped, flipped around inside and then sank. After the horrible tragedy that happened at Sandy Hook, I had taken it upon myself to go over what I thought she should do if such an event should happen at her school. One of the scenarios I spoke to her about was to stay hidden until she hears my voice calling out for her. Not a policemans voice, not a teachers voice, but my voice.

She then continued to tell me about the drill. Mommy, if a bad man broke into our school, I wont come out of my hiding spot until I hear your voice calling for me even if it means I pee my pants while I wait for you. I cant tell you my spot Mommy, but I know you will come for me. I squeezed her extra tight and gave her a kiss and said, That is exactly what I want you to do, baby. We said our goodnights and argued over who loves who more. I closed the door then collapsed to my knees losing control of the tears and sobs I had held inside.

Many times since that conversation, I have wondered what goes on during these drills. I understand the need for secrecy but my curiosity could not be quelled. Then one day, I received an email from the Fishers Area Preschool Directors Group informing me of their upcoming meeting on preschool safety. As many of my readers know, I have one kid in elementary school and one in preschool. I jumped at the chance to attend this meeting.

First to speak was Ryan Taylor, HSE Safe Schools Coordinator and Assistant Principal of Fishers High School. His focus was on communication and access control of the aggressors. He taught the three Ds of optimizing the safety in our schools: Detect, Deter, and Delay. Using technology that most schools have in place, front desk staff can get a good read on the people entering and exiting the schools. Keeping communication a priority during all hours of the the school day empowers the staff to feel prepared. By empowering the staff with knowledge of what to do in a crisis, you can save the lives of the children with whom you have been entrusted.

Captain Ron Lipps, Captain of the Life Safety Division with the Fishers Fire and Emergency Services, spoke next. He helps schools/preschools with their emergency plans, and makes sure all building inspections are up to date. Ron encouraged everyone to read the emergency protocols before a crisis happens (its too late to read it while the crisis is in progress.) Ron also emphasized that all emergency plans be reviewed by local authorities. This will ensure that they are correct, and that the local authorities know about you and your location. This is especially important for the private preschools and daycares. Practice drills as though they are playing a game so that in the event of a real emergency the children do not panic. During these drills, change up the scenario a bit. Have the fire start in a different place each time. This will help teachers and children to know what to do and how to react in case their exit is blocked.

The final presenter of the discussion was Lt Mike Johnson, School Resource Operator with the Fishers Police Department. His part was powerful. He explained what the kids are boing taught, and went step by step through what an active killer drill includes for all ages, including preschoolers. He emphasized not to scare preschool children with too much information. The most important part is to teach them to listen in an emergency situation.

Preschool lockdown drills are completely different than those for higher grade levels. For security reasons, I wont reveal details about what I learned, but was overwhelmed by what our children are being taught to survive. I forced an image of my daughter doing some of these actions. My emotions from

Tips on Talking with Your Child About Emergency Situations

q First and foremost, do not scare your child. The younger the child is, the more important this tip is.

w Talk to your child about how there isnt a single plan that covers all emergencies. Tornado drills will have a different plan than a fire drill. An active killer drill will have yet another plan.

e Talk to your child about listening to the teacher. Listening can save lives!

r If you see something, say something to an adult. Students are the eyes and ears of the school. If something seems odd, encourage your child to seek out an adult to share the information with.

t Let your child talk about his/her feelings. Talking about being scared or feeling cowardly is not an easy topic. Be there for your child. Just being there and being a support system will be taken to heart by your child.

Please note that Ryan Taylor does not necessarily want you to approach your child about active killer situations, but having a plan about what to say in case they bring it up is highly recommended.

the night of our original talk ooded back to me. When I was growing up our biggest worry was getting the car windows soaped. These babies are worried about dying at the hands of an active killer.

While I wish there was no reason for Taylor, Lipps and Johnson to have such a job, I am glad these men put their hearts and souls into keeping our children safe. Saying a simple thank you just isnt enough to suit me. Having met these men, and knowing how theyre spreading the word for HSE schools and preschools to adopt safety measures warms my heart. I hope that sharing this story expresses how much I appreciate them. Since my conversation with my daughter, I now know that these of cials are going to our schools and

discussing appropriate ways to talk to our children during these drills. The older the children, the more knowledge the children receive. The younger the child, the less scary details he or she receives. There is no value in scaring a seven year old with too many details. Indeed, it could have the opposite effect causing them to freeze and not listen, perhaps even panic.

Statistics show how slight the chance is of a child being killed by an active shooter. However, such statistics are no reason not to be prepared. For more than two hours, these men taught us how they are helping keep our children safe while at school. The next time my

daughter asks me about bad men at school, I will share the knowledge shared by these three dedicated men, and tell her to follow their lead.

Will the fear ever leave? Probably not. But, I can help our children by teaching my child what to do in a crisis situation, and she in turn will share with her friends.

They come around every year always on the same date. Still, planning your childs birthday party can sometimes catch you by surprise. Planning the perfect party for your child can be difficult for several reasons including two scenarios you may be familiar with: Your child is determined to go to the same place every year and the adults are over it, or your child changes his interest, hobbies and likes just about every three months!

For whatever reason, if party planning has you in a rut, I have a few tips to get you started. The first big decision to be made is the venue. When choosing the party location there are a few considerations including age and gender of the guests. Not only is it necessary to think about the age and gender of the birthday child, you also need to consider the age and gender of the guests who will be invited. For example, if your child is celebrating a first birthday but all the children in your family are school-aged, youll want a few activities that will interest them too.

A second consideration is time of day. If you are planning a party for preschool-aged children, you want to avoid nap times usually mid-morning or early afternoon. If your party goers are school-aged, mid-day is perfect because they are full of energy at that time. For tweens and pre-teens, choose a later start time.

Thirdly, consider the party package. Be sure to look at what the venue provides in a party package. This is extremely important if you arent interested in doing any additional work. Some places have all inclusive packages complete with favor bags, decorations and cake, while others do not.

Lastly, theres the party theme. If you already have a theme in mind for your childs birthday, choose a venue that works well with the theme. If a theme isnt screaming at you, you can also use the venue as the theme (e.g. Lets JUMP for

Alexs 5th birthday!) Here are a few great party spots to consider.

Noblesville Golf and Batting CenterHave a sports lover? Noblesvillle Golf and Batting Center is the party place to be for the child who loves sports and being outdoors. Noblesville Golf and Batting Center is open March through October, located at 17400 Willow View Rd, Noblesville. Check them out at www.golfandbattingcenter.com or call 317.773.2909 for more information.

Sky ZoneIf you can walk, you can jump! is the philosophy at Sky Zone. Sky Zone is an indoor trampoline park featuring trampoline courts (the floors and walls are trampolines), 3-D dodgeball, and Sky Slam trampoline basketball courts and the Foam Zone where you can jump into a pit of foam! This is the ultimate party location for children who are adventuresome and love to jump, flip and have a good time. Sky Zone is fun for ALL ages (including adults.) Party packages starting prices range from $160-$429 depending on the day of the week, amount of kids and the amount of amenities you want.

On the of ce wall of HSE Transportation Director Jim White is a motivational print of a young boy standing in front of an enormous aircraft with the phrase, Dream Big: you never know where dreams can take you, printed beneath. Its actually a photo of Whites grandson standing in front of a plane that White has own that is now on display at the Wright Patterson USAF museum in Dayton, Ohio. White jokes, You know youre getting old when planes youve own have been retired to a museum. The giant C-141 cargo plane isnt the only plane at Wright-Patterson that White has own. There is an Air Force One hangar across the grounds that houses one of the back up planes when White was a presidential support pilot. In fact, its the Air Force One plane that Kennedy had own to Dallas on that fateful trip.

Jim White grew up in Lafayette, where he attended Purdue University. There he met his wife, Ann. After graduation they married and White enlisted in the Air Force. The year was 1971 and the draft was still in place. Being near the end of the Vietnam War, White took the initiative to join the Air Force to become a pilot.

Whites Air Force experience was both unique and record setting. Initially White began training in a T-38, a supersonic ghter type aircraft, transitioning then to the C-141 transport aircraft. His rst assignments were airlifts in and out of southeast Asia, at the end of Vietnam. White was involved with many humanitarian missions as well as top secret missions.

White was trained as an expert nuclear pilot and evaluator. White was the rst commanding pilot of a nuclear laden aircraft for air refueling while ying across the Atlantic. According
