CALL TO CONFESSION “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Let us confess now our need for mercy and grace: PRAYER OF CONFESSION When we lose patience, when we are unkind,

when we are envious, when we are rude or proud, when we are selfish or irritable, and when we will not forgive: have mercy on us, O God.

Help us not to delight in evil, but rejoice in the truth;

help us to protect, to trust, to hope and to persevere: then shall we see you face to face,

and learn to love as you love us In Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE (from Romans 5:1-2) Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Jesus Christ we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. Glory be to God!

LEAVING FOR SERVICE

THE JOY OF BELONGING

Would you like to learn more about Ames First UMC and join with us as a church member? We make it fairly simple for folks. Visit with Pastor Fred about it. He will be holding a get-together at 10 a.m. TODAY, October 18 in the church’s fireside parlor, located just off of the sanctuary. The next gathering will be held on November 15.

A DATE FOR YOUR CALENDAR: NOVEMBER 22---Our Annual Church/Charge Conference

All full members of this congregation are invited and encouraged to attend our annual Church/Charge. It will be held on Sunday, November 22, at 3 p.m. in our multiple purpose room. Our district superintendent, Rev. Harlan Gillespie, will preside and our field outreach minister Rev. Katharine Yarnell will be present for teaching and resourcing. All full members of the church have a voice and a vote. The theme of this year’s conference is “DISCIPLESHIP: It’s All About Relationships.” Come and celebrate what God has done and is doing with us!

OCTOBER IS HEALTH AND WHOLENESS MONTH

This week of October 17-24 let us remember our INTELECTUAL WELL-BEING. A mind is a terrible thing to waste! Using our minds keeps them alert and active. Stay curious. Ask questions. Seek answers. Explore new responsibilities, experience new things and keep an open mind. And remember, knowing when and how to let your mind rest is as important as keeping it active. (Shared with by the Isaiah 40 Wellness Ministry Team)

A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY

Today, October 18th, we are inviting all members of the congregation and the greater Ames community to come and hear resident historian, Margaret Vance, speak about our 150 years of history. The program will begin at 2 p.m. A reception featuring goodies made from “Autumn’s Bounty” and apple cider will be served. Please invite your friends and neighbors to this day’s event.

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL CLOTHING DRIVE

Don Wall and Roy Cakerice will be making there annual trek to St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, S.D. with clothing donations for the children. Cutoff date is October 28th. Please bring your clothing donations in plastic bags and leave them outside of the music room.

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH YOUTH?

Confirmation Class: The class meets on Wednesday at 4:45 to 6 p.m. In October, the youth will be talking more about “Who is Jesus?” and “What is the Holy Spirit and the Spirit’s gifts and fruits?” There is no class on October 28. The students and their parents/mentors are being recruited to assist with the Holiday Fair that is being held on Saturday, October 24. Each month the students try to meet with their adult mentor from the church to discuss some specific “talk points”.

Middle School Youth: Much of October will be planning and getting ready to host the annual “All Hallows Eve” Carnival for our church’s children and family on Wednesday night, October 21. No midweek youth group on October 28. In Sunday Morning Middle School class, we are studying some of the major Old Testament stories and how they relate to our lives today. COME AND JOIN US!

Senior High Youth: On Wednesday, October 21, we are going to have fun together at “Perfect Games” here in Ames. No midweek youth group on October 28. In Sunday Morning High School class, we are continuing to link our faith with matters and events happening in today’s world. COME AND JOIN US!

CEMT will host a “Trunk or Treat” Halloween Party beginning at 6:00pm on Wednesday, October 21. We will have pizza and Halloween themed sides from 6-6:30 in the multipurpose room and then head to the south parking lot of the church for some “trunk or treating” fun! After trunk or treating, we will come back inside the church where the middle school and high school youth groups will have some games and fun activities. Wear your

costumes (please leave the scary masks and weapons at home). Everyone is welcome to decorate your trunk and come join the fun! If you have any questions about this event, please contact Nicole at 232-2750 or [email protected]

This week the Kids' Club kids learned about the prophets. As part of that study, they wrote down messages they think God wants you to hear and have posted those messages on speech bubble and envelope shaped post-it notes throughout the church. If you see one, you are welcome to take that and keep that special message just for you! The kids will be looking to see if anyone "received" their message.

“Angels are making their rounds” for Holiday Fair

Do you have items that you wish to donate to Holiday Fair but can’t get them to the church? Or do you need a ride the day of Holiday Fair because you don’t have transportation?

Angels (UMW Circle of Faith) will be making their rounds by picking up those items on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th. If you need a ride, the Angels will also pick you up the day of Holiday Fair and take you home. If you are interested in the Angels helping you, please contact Cami McColley at 232-5301 or [email protected] to schedule a time.

Each church family is asked to bring a homemade pie for serving at lunch. If possible, pies should be in disposable pie pans. Pie Patrol volunteers will be available at the south entrance to pick up your pie by 7:00am the day of the Fair.

BISHOP’S IN GATHERING NEWS

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Give a person a fish and they will eat for a day. Teach a person to fish and they will eat for a lifetime.” United Methodist missions do both. They take care of the immediate needs of people who are suffering, and they also teach income-producing skills that will help them out of poverty. The three kits featured below are used in classes where women learn to sew and knit. These skills allow them to provide clothing for their families and sell items on the market. The income made will feed their families and allow their children to go to school.

If you wish to donate a kit or kits, please put the completed kits in the “mission closet” (Bethany’s old office) across from the office.

Sewing Kit (UMCOR) 3 yd. cotton or cotton-blend fabric (one piece) 1 new spool matching thread (medium to large) 1 package of hand sewing needles 1 pair of sewing scissors (Please note: Cheap craft scissors are not a good choice as they do not cut fabric well. 5-8 matching flat buttons (on card or fastened together)

Wrap sewing notions in fabric, Seal in zip-lock bag. (Value: $28 + $2 postage) Knitting Kit (INP) 2 7-oz. skeins of yarn (acrylic worsted, solid color, same dye lot) 1 pair 10” knitting needles, size 8 1 crochet hook, size E 2 yarn needles, size 16 1 pair small scissors, size 4 or 5

Place needles in skein of yarn and place all supplies in appropriate size zip-lock bag. (Value:$15 + $2 postage) Tailoring Kit (INP) 1 package hand sewing needles 1 card white flat buttons (at least 6, 1/2”) 1 package non-rusting straight pins 1 spool white thread (200 - 300 yards) 1 spool dark thread (200—300 yards) 1 tape measure with centimeters (5/8”x60”) 1 quality pair of all-purpose/sewing scissors (8”)

Place in appropriate size zip-lock bag. (Value: $14 + $2 postage)

(Personal Energy Transportation) aids persons with leg disabilities IF you make a financial donation be sure in the memo line to put “for 2015 Bishop’s Ingathering) Please bring your completed kits and/or financial donations to the church office no later than Sunday, November 1st.

Health Kits (UMCOR) 1 new hand towel (15x25” up to 17x27”) 1 new wash cloth 6 band aids (3/4”) 1 bath size bar of soap in wrapper-3 oz. or larger 1 large sturdy comb (not pocket size) 1 new toothbrush in wrapper (no child-sized) 1 nail file or fingernail clipper (no emery boards or toenail clippers)

First United Methodist Church Affirmation of Welcome

As a community of the people of God, we are called to minister to all people of the world, knowing that the world is often an unloving place, a place of alienation and brokenness. Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness, and we are challenged by the Gospel to be agents of healing within our society. We stand in affirmation with the apostle Paul that in Christ "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female." Christ has made us one. We acknowledge that this reconciliation encompasses all within the community of faith who exhibit differences in race, gender and ethnicity, as well as age, culture, physical ability, educational level, economic status, personality, marital status and sexual orientation. In response to the often hostile social climate with respect to diversity within our society and the resulting feelings of alienation from the Church, we wish to make known our caring and concern. It is for this purpose that we affirm the following: ·all persons share the worth that comes from being unique individuals created by God; ·all persons are welcome within the membership of this congregation upon making affirmation of faith; and that as members of this congregation, all persons are expected and encouraged to share in the sacramental and general life of this congregation.
