Observations Walking in Wonder

May 7 - July 4 Lost Valley Visitor Center, Glacial Park

Artist Reception: Sunday, May 16, 3–5 p.m.

Local artist Barbara Schneider uses nature as the starting point for creating abstract, sophisticated interpretations in mixed media. Her work is meant to make you view nature with new eyes and provide the opportunity for physical, mental, or emotional reflection. She walked many Conservation District sites and recorded what she saw, heard, smelled and experienced. She used those observations to create hand stitched textile maps that create a record of her natural journey.

Barbara began quilting in 1996 and discovered the pleasure of working with cloth, paint, dye, and thread. Her interest in the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi strongly influences her work. She teaches as well as exhibits nationally and internationally. Her artwork is in both private and public collections.

Join Artist-in-Residence, Barbara Schneider for a discussion about how she uses nature as the starting point for creating abstract, sophisticated interpretations in mixed media. Her work is meant to make you view nature with new eyes and provide the opportunity for physical, mental, or emotional reflection. After the short talk, Barbara will continue the discussion during a walk through her exhibit.

“It was a wonderful experience to see both the large sweeps of prairies and woods but also the smaller, more intimate treasures the sites have to offer. When I look at the artwork and read the accompanying text, I am transported back to the walk itself. I hope viewers will enjoy the art for the art's sake and then be enticed to go walk one of the many beautiful conservation sites in McHenry."
