SUMMARY

On the 18th of February 2009 a fire resistance test was carried out on electrical services penetrating 800mm x 800mm x 60mm thick VERMICULUX® barrier within a 120mm thick concrete slab. Each specimen satisfied the performance requirements as specified in AS1530.4-2005 and AS4072.1-2005 for the following periods. For all specimens the main fire-stopping system was 60mm thick VERMICULUX®. 1. Introduction

1.1 Fire resistance test carried out in accordance with AS 1530.4-2005 and

AS 4072.1-2005 to measure the fire resistance of AN Sealant protecting electrical services penetrating 800mm x 800mm x 60mm thick VERMICULUX® barrier. See Table 1 on page 7 for details.

2. Scope 2.1 This test report evaluates the fire performance of all specimens for integrity and

insulation criteria according to AS 1530.4-2005 and AS 4072.1-2005. 2.2 The results of these fire tests may be used to directly assess fire hazard, but it

should be recognised that a single test method will not provide a full assessment of fire hazard under all fire conditions.

2.3 This report details methods of construction, the test conditions and the results

obtained when the specific element of construction described herein was tested following the procedure outlined in AS 1530.4-2005. Any significant variation in respect to size, construction details, loads, stresses, edge or end conditions, other than those allowed under the field of direct application in the relevant test method, is not covered by this report.

2.4 Because of the nature of fire resistance testing and the consequent difficulty in

quantifying the uncertainty of measurement of fire resistance, it is not possible to provide a stated degree of accuracy of the result.

3. Manufacturer

3.1 PROMASEAL® AN Sealant was manufactured by Promat International.

3.2 VERMICULUX® was manufactured by Intumex Pty Ltd.

3.3 Electrical cables manufactured by Prysmian Power Cables & Systems Pty Ltd and

Olex Pty Ltd.

4.2 Australian Standard™ 4072 Part 1-2005

Components for the protection of openings in fire-resistant separating elements. Part 1: Service penetrations and control joints.

Deviations from Test Standard 4.3 The percentage deviation in the area of the curve of the average temperature

recorded by the furnace thermocouples versus time from the standard time-temperature curve was at times throughout the test lower than the standard permits. Given the nature of the test specimen and the results achieved it is the opinion of the testing authority that this would not have affected the results in a manner significant enough to alter the outcome of the test.

5. Instrumentation 5.1 Temperature measurement obtained with Intech Micro 2100 - A16 Analogue input

(serial no.'s 0813423, 0811140, 0813415, 0811139) temperature logger. Temperature range of 0°C to 1200°C.

5.2 Furnace pressure differential measured with Magnehelic pressure gauge. Pressure

range of 0 Pa to 60 Pa. 5.3 Test environment measurement obtained with FLUKE 971 Temperature Humidity

meter (serial no. 2418208). Temperature range of -20°C to 60°C with humidity range of 5% to 95%.

6. Test Procedure 6.1 General

Fire resistance test carried out on the 18th February 2009. Initial ambient laboratory temperature recorded to be 31°C.

6.2 Furnace Heating Conditions

Furnace temperature controlled so that the average temperature followed the time/temperature curve [T =345 log10 (8t +1) +20].

6.3 Furnace Pressure Differential

Furnace pressure measured with Magnehelic pressure gauge, with probe located 100mm below the exposed face of the separating element. See Table 4 on page 14.

6.4 Specimen Temperatures Specimen temperatures measured with type K thermocouples soldered to 12mm copper discs. Each thermocouple covered with 30 ±0.5mm x 30 ±0.5mm x 2.0 ± 0.5mm thick Millboard squares. Initial temperatures taken from the average measured on the unexposed face for each specimen are listed below.

9. Test Specimen Description

9.1 Specimen A

Bundle of 10, 3-core cables penetrating a single layer of 60mm thick

VERMICULUX® board protected locally by AN Sealant. Service extended 500mm

from the exposed face and 500mm from the unexposed face, supported twice on

unexposed side at 200mm and 300mm. AN sealant was built up around the

penetration on the unexposed face of the main fire-stopping system in a conical

shape that extended 75mm along the service from the main fire-stopping system

and 50mm from the edge of the service penetration onto the main fire-stopping

system. AN Sealant was used to fill an annular gap of approximately 5mm between

the service and main fire-stopping system, to the depth of the VERMICULUX®

barrier.

9.2 Specimen B

Group A configuration cable tray penetrating a single layer of 60mm thick

VERMICULUX® board protected locally by AN Sealant. Service extended 500mm

from the exposed face and 500mm from the unexposed face, supported twice on

unexposed side at 200mm and 300mm. AN sealant was built up around the

penetration on the unexposed face of the main fire-stopping system in a conical

shape that extended 75mm along the service from the main fire-stopping system

and 50mm from the edge of the service penetration onto the main fire-stopping

system. AN Sealant was used to fill an annular gap of approximately 5mm between

the service and main fire-stopping system, to the depth of the VERMICULUX®

barrier.

10. Separating Element 10.1 Separating element consisted of a 1860mm x 1860mm x 120mm thick concrete

slab with a 800mm x 800mm opening for test purposes at its centre.

10.2 VERMICULUX® barrier was mounted above the opening, on top of the slab and

overlapping the opening by approximately 100mm on all sides. A bead of 10mm x 10mm PROMASEAL® AN Sealant was applied to the perimeter of the VERMICULUX® barrier on both the exposed and unexposed sides, as well as the interface between the VERMICULUX® barrier and concrete slab overlap.

See drawings in Appendix C for details.

11. Orientation 11.1 Assembly tested in a horizontal orientation with furnace opening of 1100mm x

1100mm.

12. Environmental Conditions 12.1 Test specimen was stored in an indoor environment for 5 days.

14. Performance Criteria Structural adequacy Structural adequacy for service penetrations is not considered in AS 1530.4-2005. AS 1530.4-2005 states that integrity and insulation failure shall be deemed to have occurred if the following occurs; Integrity A failure of the test construction to maintain integrity shall be deemed to have occurred when collapse or sustained flaming on the unexposed face occurs or the criteria given below are exceeded. Failure shall be deemed to have occurred when one or other of the following conditions prevail. For situations where the cotton pad is suitable, failure shall be deemed to have occurred when flames and/or hot gases cause flaming or glowing of the cotton fibre pad. Sustained flaming on the surface of the unexposed face for 10 seconds or longer. *Note: Gap gauges are not used for service penetrations Insulation The fire resistance of the penetrated element as built within this test has already been established. As a result, insulation criteria have only been measured at the penetration seals. Insulation failure shall be deemed to have occurred when; Temperature at any location on the unexposed face of test specimen exceeds the initial temperature by 180°C

15. Field of Direct Application

Separating Elements results obtained for sealing systems in various types of masonry and concrete construction may be applied as follows: For elements manufactured from similar types of concrete or masonry, the results of the prototype test may be applied to materials of density within ±15% of the tested specimen. For greater variations, the opinion of a registered testing authority shall be obtained.
