BUBBLE CLOUDS

The sculpture presents a fictional, man-made species of tree. Bubble Clouds is

characterized by a crown made up of large oxygen bubbles that, after the ripening

period, detach from the trunk and dissolve in the atmosphere. The second

characteristic feature of this tree is the night illumination in all RGB colors, which

makes the crown look like a multi-colored cloud.

Viewers have the option of programming the color palette of the illumination, so they

can instantly experience their influence on the trees and at the same time be the

subject to the inspiration based on its reactions.

In an abstract way, the sculpture highlights the two most common human

expectations of the plant world: oxygen production and decoration. Other aspects of

the life of Bubble Clouds are left to the reflection and interpretation by the viewer.

The sculpture is an expression of the tension between biological sciences, art, and

technology. This relationship on the one hand is the path to abstraction, on the other

hand it is the inevitable return to nature. The sculpture reminds us of our need to

breathe and look, and encourages doing it consciously.

LETTER OF INTEREST

For this project I would like to propose my new concept – “Bubble Clouds”. The sculpture would emphasize the importance of nature and oxygen production.

I am an artist with interest in public art. I have previously completed successful projects in the public realm, ranging from public parks, to shopping centers. Most of my sculptures are made from acid resistant stainless steel, I illuminate the sculptures with RGB LED lamps because the illumination is very important for the reception from the viewers. I am especially fascinated by the floral patterns, such as constructions of flowers and plants. I treat a sculpture as a composition of space.

I am interested in place-making artworks that share values with sound urban design. In past projects, I have successfully collaborated with managers and general constructors of large buildings, consulting professionals and several fabricators. Some projects I have done include coordinating with civic professionals on the municipal level. My artworks are engaging pieces that carefully fit, without necessarily seeming so, into their spaces by using a creative logic.

As an artist I have successful track record of urban-sited and integrated public artworks in multiple cities with municipal and private clients. The body of works includes public art projects around the world public, art plans for municipalities, and public urban installations. My projects have been completed in Seoul, Dubai, Chicago, Istanbul. In my work experience there are several noteworthy public art projects, among others:

Realization of Bubble Forest, Nice, CAP 3000, Saint Laurent du Var

• Realization of „Dandelions” near Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE;

• Realization of „Dandelions” for Zorlu Center, Istanbul, Turkey;

NARRATIVE: UNFOLDING CROWN

The proposed design for Inspiration Plaza was inspired by origami paper folding and the image of a crown. The sculpture not only recalls the image of a regal crown, but also evokes an uplifting and inspiring sense of striving for a higher good.

In addition to being symbolic, the artwork creates an inhabitable space that invites imaginative interaction, reflection, and togetherness. The artwork offers a community space that people of all ages can discover. The sculpture’s center is open to sky, allowing sunlight to pour in.

Reminiscent of leaves or wings, each panel helps to support the adjacent panels. As the panels rise to a narrow point, they “unfold” outwards to create a crown. Since the sculpture can be viewed from the upper rooms of the surrounding buildings, people will be able to see the shape of a bursting star. The panels are perforated with leaf-shaped patterns, that will create ever-changing shadow patterns on the ground. At night, the sculpture will be internally lit with in-ground uplights, which will create a lantern-like effect.

The sculpture will be fabricated from steel (stainless steel if the budget permits). The perforated patterns on the panels will be cut by water-jet cutting techonology. The sculpture will be approximately twenty feet high by twenty feet in diameter.

James Dinh Letter of Interest

Dear Selection Committee: It is an honor to submit my qualifications for the Inspiration Plaza Public Art Project. Working at the confluence of public art and landscape architecture, I am interested in this project because of the opportunity to integrate art into a public space that will serve as a central gathering space for the neighborhood and community. The themes addressed in my creative work are rooted in my family's experience of being refugees, who had to create a new home here in the U.S. after leaving Vietnam in 1975. Based in Southern California, I explore notions of community, identity, and historical narrative within the context of public space. Because I strongly believe that the context and requirements of each project inform the final form and materiality of the artwork, I do not believe in a one style fits all approach. As such, my portfolio offers a diversity of approaches, interventions, and forms. My design process involves asking working with stakeholder groups, conducting research, and drawing on the unique aspects of each community in order to develop design narratives that heighten the experience and understanding of place. In 2014, I completed a public art project for a new community center in Hacienda Heights, commissioned by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. The art piece utilized stockpiled earth to construct a landform that creates an outdoor room where people can gather. Three long concrete benches showcase historical images that I gathered from community members and historical societies. The benches not only serve a pragmatic purpose; they also help to educate people about the history of the area. I also designed the landscape, which utilized native plants to evoke a deep sense of place. In 2017, I completed a public art project in Little Saigon, Orange County, the heart of the largest Vietnamese community in the U.S. The artwork is a contemporary re-telling of a traditional Vietnamese origins legend. It celebrates the immigrant story about a people taking roots in a new land, exchanging cultures, while growing and evolving, yet connected to the ancestral land through myth, traditions, and family. At night the sculpture is illuminated from within like a lantern, symbolizing the resiliency and hopes of the community, while serving as a distinctive beacon for the area. Surrounding the central sculpture are benches that showcase 100 portraits of everyday Vietnamese Americans, a collaborative project with the University of California at Irvine. I believe strongly in the word "public" as when used to describe the type of art intended for civic enjoyment and engagement. Public art should reflect the aspirations of the community. If selected for the Inspiration Plaza Public Art Project, I would look forward to collaborating with key stakeholders to further refine the design proposal. I envision an artwork that will be evoke an uplifting sense of striving for a higher good, while also being an inhabitable space that invites imaginative interaction, reflection, and togetherness. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, James Dinh

Working Title: The Flame of Inspiration“The Flame of Inspiration” would be a 22’ tower made of polished stainless steel and thick cast, colored glass. To be “inspired” is to be filled with an animated, quickening, or exalting influence. It arouses strong feelings, intense thoughts and new ideas and has been often been related to spiritual experiences. The Flame of Inspiration is meant to invoke these feelings. The towering size and the colored glass insets would are reminiscent of the luminescent stained glass windows of ancient cathedrals, but the shiny stainless finish and twisting shapes are decidedly contemporary. The steel and glass are both low maintenance, long lasting, and very strong. The glass would be 1” thick castings, much thicker and stronger than the average window, with a shatter resistant coating. With up-lighting or possible LED strands running down the stainless strips, the piece would both gleam in the daylight and make a striking beacon at night.

Amie Jacobsen Art and Design

Dear City of Fremont, Please consider my proposal for a public art sculpture for Inspiration Plaza. I am applying as the lead artist on a team with Dierk Van Keppel of Rock Cottage Glassworks. Together we can build a glittering tower of stainless steel and colorful cast glass (outdoor quality) that would truly become a beacon to the community and the heart of the neighborhood. My specific interest in this project came as a result of seeing the renderings of Inspiration Plaza. The tall, twisted stand-in art piece in the rendering made me think of my style of work and I literally felt inspired by the name “Insereration Plaza” itself. I call my concept “The Flame of Inspiration”, and believe it captures the spirit of development. Though I have been an artist all of my life, for the last half decade I have been working in steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. I began this journey working in a metal fabrication shop in the Kansas City area as the in-house designer and resident artist while learning metal fabrication skills. In 2016 I was awarded my first solo large scale sculpture for Genesis Hospital in Davenport, IA and moved into my own studio and workshop space. I have now completed several large commissions including public art pieces for Overland Park, Kansas, Crested Butte, CO and am in the process of completing a piece for Coral Springs, FL. I share an 8000 sq. foot shop space with Dierk Van Keppel and his company, Rock Cottage Glassworks. Dierk has been creating custom art glass for the last 25 years. He has produced public art commissions for companies such as The Kansas City Chiefs, H&R Block, Lawrence Public Library, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, and Children’s Mercy Hospital. Combining my work in steel and his work in glass allows us to create unique pieces of large scale outdoor sculpture that are durable, colorful, and can incorporate innovative lighting. Both Dierk and I have experience working with public art committees, architects, designers, contractors, and municipalities and would be honored to work with the City of Fremont, CA to create a stunning piece for Inspiration Plaza. Thank you for your consideration, Amie Jacobsen and Dierk Van Keppel

Inspiration Plaza, Concept Proposal.Patrick Marold Studios Inc. 12/19

I envision a pair of arced stained-glass walls that create a colorful and luminous passage while presenting an iconic form visible from afar. The transitioning colors will project and reflect onto the landscape and surrounding architecture. The color scheme is open to adjustment, as is the scale.

City of Freemont, Public Artwork for Inspiration Plaza

Attention Selection Committee, I am submitting my qualifications and proposal sketch for the Inspiration Plaza

Opportunity, with an interest in creating a sculptural concept that introduces a chromatic environment to enter and pass through, while casting colors across the landscape and nearby buildings.

I have been creating sculptural works in the public realm for two decades, in a wide range of scale and site conditions. My experience of working directly with design teams, and community representatives has informed my artistic approach so that I can provide integral works of art that remain actively engaging beyond their inception.

Seasonal dynamics and daily shifts in natural light qualities will introduce a range of characteristics and experiences for the viewer. The steel and glass walls will provide a distinctive visual component to the development and Warm Springs area. The art’s evening presence will welcome the public, greeting the community.

Working closely with the design and construction teams, I will develop the concept to integrate with the plaza design. Input and feedback from the stakeholders will help guide the proposed concept into a final work of art that contributes to the overall character of the new development.

I appreciate your consideration,

Patrick Marold

Dear Committee Members,

I will create an iconic, luminous artwork for the Inspiration Plaza Project. My installation will activate and elevate the experience of the plaza as a flow of light and landscape. The proposed artwork will continue the language of light and organic form in my successful public art installations, while enhancing the beauty of the area and responding directly to the site experience. The artwork has the potential to be an area of high impact, becoming a central moment in the day and night, an oasis for reflection, contemplation, and rejuvenation. I intend for the artwork to be the epicenter for the creation of ideas and community building.

As a member of the Bay Area community, it would be an honor to create an artwork for the City of Fremont. To this day I have completed over 50 large, permanently installed, public art works around the world. My installations range from suspension sculpture to wall relief as well as free-standing. My practice utilizes sustainable and durable materials, making my process sensitive to the surrounding environment and ecosystems.

By creating a piece that reflects the beauty and innovative nature of Fremont, I aim to channel and embody the essence of the environment and the community residing within it, commemorating its energy in the formation of a large-scale, three-dimensional work. The resulting art will be both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually thought-provoking, honoring the people that built the town and paying homage to the community that will sustain it.

In the past, I have collaborated with a range of people including architects, structural engineers, state employees, and community members. Listening to and learning from the members of the community, I will tailor the public artwork to the wants and needs of the people of Fremont.

As an artist, my public artworks are vibrant, memorable, and engage all ages with heightened sense of wonder and play. If selected, I will work closely with planners, architects, engineers, and community groups to create a piece that will activate visitors to Fremont with a sense of energy, uplifting their spirits and integrating fully and seamlessly into the Inspiration Plaza Project.

Thank you,

Shan Shan Sheng Visual Artist
