A few words from our Producer Sas Selfjord A shuffle....a flap.....a ball change....this is where it all begins. And, then it morphs into something else when tap masters put their own stamp on it. Tap dance becomes a magical message of rhythm and rhyme. Welcome to this evening of innovative creative expression, featuring stellar artists- who will transcend any mortal thoughts you have ever had about tap dance. The rhythmic conversation will engage you, while illuminating the intri- cacies of tap. Hopefully, the performances will shape new concepts of tap dance and vivid images are implanted. After the curtain has closed, I am confident you will be left with a sense that you have just experienced something very special-the cutting edge of tap dance. On behalf of the artists, the festival, and staff at Vancouver Tap Dance Society, thank you for taking the time out on a sum- mer evening, to be part of this percussive musical experience. Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Derick K. Grant, and Jason Samuels Smith are three of the world’s most influential ambassadors of tap. They come together in the world premiere And Still You Must Swing, which captures the heart and legacy of tap dance and honors the influence of jazz roots on this outstanding art form. Don’t miss this rhythmic feast of live music, dynamic choreography, and stunning improvisation.

Received a Tony Nomination, Drama Desk Nomination, and Outer Critics Circle Award for his role in Jelly’s Last Jam. Ted was also awarded an EMMY AWARD for his performance in the PBS Special Precious Memories, and appeared in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X.

Billy SiegenfeldBilly is the founder, artistic director, principal choreographer, vocal arranger, and en-semble performing member of the quarter-century-old, Emmy® Award-winning JUMP RHYTHM® Jazz Project.

Terry BrockTerry has shared the stage with the likes of Gregory Hines, The Nicholas Brothers and Ben Vereen. She’s created repertory and appeared with major symphonies. Her background includes multiple choreographic works, and an international performing career.

Derick GrantRecipient of a Princess Grace Award, a Helen Hayes Award, two Ovation Awards, Best Chorography Award, Best Ensemble Performance Award, and the Lester Horton Dance Award as well as a New York Dance and Performance Award for the Blues Project.

Travis KnightsParticipated extensively as a tap consultant for Cirque du Soleil in Montreal, and in the Opening Ceremonies to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Most recently, he embarked on a self-produced world tour, teaching and performing with the Tap Love.

Jason Samuels SmithRecipient of an Emmy, a Dance Magazine Award, an American Choreography Award, a Joyce Foundation Grant, and New York Dance and Performance (“Bessie”) recognition. Smith is also the director of the annual LA Tap Festival.

Dormeshia Sumbry-EdwardsA two-time New York Dance and Performance (“Bessie”) Award (as performer and chore-ographer), Princess Grace Award and Astaire Award recipient. Some of Sumbry-Edwards’ choreography credits include Michael Jackson’s personal tap instructor.

Joel HannaHe was selected by the NY Times as “Pick of the Year”, and as a performer, shared the stage with legends such as Pete Seeger, Andrea Bocelli, Charles “Cholly” Atkins, and many more. Known for his mixture of tap dance, percession, Irish dance, and martial arts.

Andrew PrashadAndrew is an award winning actor, composer and writer, and as a singer, actor, dancer and choreographer. Currently he is a rotating cast member for the North American and International tours of RIVERDANCE as a featured dancer and singer.

Claudia RahardjanotoNamed one of “25 To Watch” by Dance Magazine and featured on the cover of Dance Teacher Magazine. she has had the honor of dancing with and learning from Dianne Walk-er, Ted Levy, Dormeshia Sumbry- Edwards, Michelle Dorrance, and so many more.

Allison MillerMiller has been named “Top 20 Jazz Drummers” in Downbeat Magazine. Her band, Boom Tic Boom, is a 2014 recipient of Chamber Music America’s “Presenter Consortium for Jazz Grant” and is proudly sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation
