Although the first International Choral Festival was presented in1987, Professor Donald Carey had the vision of a non-competitivechoral festival in Missoula years before. Carey was conductor ofThe University of Montana Chamber Chorale in 1983 when thegroup performed at the Festival International de Chant Choral inNancy, France. Two years later the Missoula Mendelssohn Club,a community men's chorus directed by Carey, toured Europe performing concerts in various countries. Inspired by the old-world hospitality that the University Chorale and MendelssohnClub enjoyed in France, Carey and the choristers envisionedMissoula hosting an international choral festival of its own. Theyset about inviting world-class choral groups to Missoula.

After returning from Europe, organizers set a Festival date in July1987, still not certain if the invited choirs would attend or if localaudiences would support such an event. That summer everyonewas elated when performing groups arrived from Austria, France,Germany, Italy, Latvia and Poland, as well as groups fromMinnesota, Montana and South Dakota. The fledgling InternationalChoral Festival attracted more than enough host families, contributors, volunteers and audience members. In fact, the organizers were surprised when concert halls overflowed withpeople, making it necessary to move the location of the Finale concert from a high school gymnasium to the largest venue at theUniversity. It was obvious to all that the International ChoralFestival was to continue.

Three years later in 1989 the Festival became a non-profit organization overseen by a volunteer board of directors.Thatsame year, in light of a changing geo-political world, it became clear that the International Choral Festival was much more than ahigh level musical event. The second Festival in July of 1990 helpedbridge political boundaries when audiences were delighted bychoirs from Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Scotland,Uruguay, Oregon and Montana. Celebrated entertainer JesterHarrison, known for his arrangements of Negro spirituals, was the special guest conductor at the Festival Finale Concert.

In July of 1993 hundreds of volunteers were involved in fundraising, housing guests, selling merchandise, serving meals andmanaging concert venues. The countries represented that yearincluded Austria, Botswana, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, South Korea and Spain.Arizona,Montana, Oregon, and Wyoming represented the United States.A much-loved and anticipated Missoula tradition by 1996, theFestival attracted choirs from Argentina,Austria, Belgium, Canada,Hong Kong, South Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore,Taiwanand Thailand. They were joined by choirs from Washington State

History of the Festival and Montana. Enthusiastic audiences once again packed the concert venues.

“Music for the Millennium,” the 2000 Festival, was especially memorable. Due in large part to the diligence of the Festival co-chairs, the prestigious Cuban choir Coro Exaudi received visasto perform in the United States for the first time. The KennedyCenter and national choral organizations tried to secure visas forExaudi, but were unsuccessful. The Cuban choir was joined bychoirs from Austria, Botswana, China, Denmark and Spain in addition to the states of Georgia, Montana, Oregon andWashington. As part of the millennium celebration, the AmericanComposers Forum awarded the 2000 Festival a grant for an original composition by composer and conductor WilliamMcGlaughlin of NPR's St. Paul Sunday. To conclude the FestivalFinale Concert, McGlaughlin conducted the world premier of his“Walt Whitman's Dream,” featuring all of the Festival singers in the University's Adams Center.

The momentum of the International Choral Festival continued tobuild in 2003, as choirs from Angola,Austria, Bulgaria, Canada,Colombia, Finland, Latvia, Malaysia, Peru, Slovakia, South Korea,Spain,Taiwan and the states of North Carolina, Oregon,Washington State and Montana thrilled audiences despite record-setting high temperatures. With the largest number of children's choirs to date, the Festival invited guest conductorChristine Jordanoff to lead the International Massed Youth andChildren's Choir in a special youth concert.

The seventh International Choral Festival in 2006 attracted a totalestimated audience of some 30,000 people from all over theUnited States. Outstanding choirs from Australia, Czech Republic,Estonia, India, Slovenia, South Korea,Taiwan and Wales participated, with U.S. choirs from California, Kansas, Montana, North Dakotaand Washington State. Diane Loomer, one of Canada's leadingconductors and clinicians, was the guest conductor for the FinaleConcert. Overflow concert venues and standing ovations werethe norm at the 2006 Festival, which some say was the best ever.

Much in the world has changed since the start of the ChoralFestival over twenty years ago; however, its mission of promotinginternational friendship, understanding and goodwill through musicremains as meaningful and appropriate as ever. The ChoralFestival has gained a reputation world-wide for excellence andhospitality. Having evolved from its grassroots beginnings into aprestigious international event, Missoula's International ChoralFestival continues to “bring the world a little closer” through song.

The founders, under thedirection of Badri Jimsheleishvili, are a group of professional conductors who came together to research and perform the ancient chantsand folk songs of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Since 1994 the membership has remained the same. The group of four “has a treasure trove of short and long tunes, at times approximating the power of an army chorus, and at other times sounding as sweet as a father's lullaby to his baby,” a reporter commented about their performance at a Canadian choral competition. According to aNorwich Cathedral of England publication,“The Chanters Group performed ancient chants…complete with their beautiful resonant harmonies and sonorous bass tones, that don't exist the sameway in western church music.” In addition to performing extensively throughout Georgia, the group has also released fouralbums. Membership is comprisedof select high school students from Missoula's public and parochial highschools. With only twelve evening rehearsals starting at the beginning ofsummer vacation, the singers, from varied backgrounds and schools, quickly

come together to emerge during Festival week as a superb youth choir. Many MYC alumni, now adults with fond memories of performing at the International Choral Festival, are now among the host families, volunteers and contributors of the 2009 Festival. The partnership of the Missoula Youth Choir with the International Choral Festival provides Missoula's young singers with the opportunity to experience diverse music and cultures from across the globe without leaving their hometown.
