The lesson “Love ‘em or Loathe ‘em” is all about the basic American idiomatic expressions that the second year students should be able to learn and employ in order to further write descriptive essays effectively.

The lesson will be opened using a song from Flocabulary.com, a website specifically made for teachers and learners. The song “The Mouth of the Horse” is full of idioms wherein the students will be asked to pinpoint them out and expose their literal and figurative meanings.

Afterwards, the students will be asked to come up with advices in certain situations through the following idioms presented.

Other idioms will also be provided for the students such as the animal idioms and color idioms through a video presentation from YouTube.com.

The students will be assessed through their exposition of literal and figurative meanings of the idioms presented in the song, their advices in each group and their individual essays with at least 10 idioms and 5 paragraphs as their assignments.Subject Area(s): Click box(es) of the subject(s) that your Unit targets

2. Noted and identified the strange phrases in the song “The Mouth of the Horse” as Idioms.

3. Differentiated the figurative meaning from the literal meaning of each idiomatic expression.

4. Utilized the given idioms to suit a situation or come up with an advice.

5. Composed a 5 paragraph descriptive essay using at least 10 idioms tackled during the discussion.

Procedures:

A. Daily Routines

1. Opening Prayer

A student assigned will lead the prayer.

2. Word, Quote and Trivia for the Day

The same student assigned will present his/her Word, Quote and Trivia for the Day.

B. Recap

1. The students will be asked about their past lessons (Royal Order of Adjectives, Participles, Adjectival Clauses, Descriptive Essays, etc.)

2. The students will be asked that from these lessons, what certain skill is being asked from them. (They are asked to “describe”)

3. The students will be taught about the relation of the next lesson to the previous lessons, which is to make a descriptive essay more colorful and fun to read and write.

C. Motivation

1. The students will be asked to listen to a song entitled “The Mouth of the Horse”. The song will be played twice.

2. The students will then be instructed to take note of the peculiar or strange phrases they will catch from the song using a note taking chart.

3. Afterwards, the students will be asked to look at the flashed sentences with underlined phrases through the PowerPoint Presentation.

4. The students will be asked by the teacher about the meaning of the underlined words or phrases that will be flashed through the PowerPoint Presentation.

5. The students will be asked about their insights about the flashed sentences with underlines phrases.

D. Introduction to Idioms

1. The students will be shown a PowerPoint Presentation about the said peculiar phrases from the lyrics of the song “The Mouth of the Horse”.

2. The students will be introduced to the topic “special expressions” or “idioms” through the PowerPoint Presentation.

3. The students will be then introduced to the two kinds of meaning of an idiom – its literal meaning and its figurative meaning.

E. Activity: “Mouth of the Horse”

1. After the quick discussion, the students will be asked to group themselves into 6 groups (each group with 6 members).

2. Next, each group will be given a set of worksheets where they will draw and present the literal and figurative meaning of the peculiar phrases or idioms they were able to get from the lyrics of the song. The song will be played again.

3. Afterwards, one representative from each group will report their answers. The first group to report will be chosen through a software called Selector Tools.

4. Then, the answers will be revealed to the students through the PowerPoint Presentation.

F. Discussion about the Activity:

1. The students will know through the activity and the discussion what each idiom really means.

2. (Optional) The students will also be presented two other sets of idioms (animal idioms and color idioms) through the video downloaded from YouTube.

G. Activity: “Give an Advice”

1. To further their learning in using different idioms, each group will be given another set of worksheets (different set each group) wherein a set of idiom is presented. There are also scenarios wherein these idioms could serve as an advice for the character in the scenario.

2. Each group will again report on their respective idioms and answers to the class. The first group to report will be chosen through a software called Selector Tools.

H. Assignment:

1. As the students’ assignment, they will be asked to write a descriptive essay (Character Portrait, Description of an Object, Place, etc.) consisting of 5 paragraphs and with at least 10 idioms, from the ones tackled, perfectly used.

I. Summary

1. The students will listen to the teacher as he sums up everything that they have tackled in this particular day by giving them the important notes to remember.
