“Within less than a week of joining the trainee scheme I was placed

on a big budget US TV drama for two days to help out with early prep. With Vicki and Tam’s advice and support I was able to make the right impression and I was asked to stay on. We’re now on month nine of the project and I know that the diary service will be invaluable in helping me make the next step in my career.” Ella O. Former CallTime Trainee 2017

“CallTime has been invaluable in helping Gloucestershire College

recent graduates make the leap from the classroom to the film set. From their excellent Runners Training Day in London through to personalized advice, the agency has shepherded students onto some of the biggest productions in the country. Providing an entry point into mainstream film and TV productions like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Sherlock and Midsummer Murders, CallTime does what they say they do. There are no gimmicks, no jobs that don’t exist, no jobs that exploit young grads. Tamana and Vicki are always accessible and quick to respond to emails. What can I say... CallTime is great.”

Over the years of running the Trainee Scheme we quickly recognised a strong desire from Heads of Department (HODs) across the industry for good quality training; transparency in the work people have achieved; education at each level and a need to open up diversity within the industry.

This led us to re-engineer our scheme to respond exactly to the needs of the Film and HETV Drama industry and of the trainees we were working with. CallTime Foundations is a nine month training programme entirely dedicated to strengthening the UK Film and TV industry from the ground up and with a simple set of objectives:

• To establish a recognized standard of excellence for trainees entering the Film/TV Industry • To provide a clear at-a-glance system of accreditation for work completed on Feature Films and HETV Drama • To increase diversity within the Creative Industries • To increase the creative opportunities for those from underprivileged and under-represented backgrounds. • To support a clear pathway for new entrants coming into an ever expanding industry.

CallTime Foundations is a Community Interest Company, with all profits re-invested into the company and trainees.

With over 25 years’ experience as Assistant Directors between them, in 2013 Tamana Bleasdale and Vicki Allen launched CallTime Company a Diary Service, supplying Film and TV Drama PAs and Location Marshals.

At the same time they started a trainee scheme to Discover, Establish and Support new entrants - which has now evolved into Calltime Foundations.

The 9 month Foundations Programme: Training the best

We want to develop the best. We interview every shortlisted candidate before selecting those with the most potential.

This is the beginning of a relationship with us that will develop over the Foundations Course and beyond.

Industry experts giving unique insight. We start with a training day where we invite leading Film and HETV Drama industry experts to talk to our new entrants. It’s invaluable, giving the trainees an insight they might never otherwise acquire. And it shows not just what their job involves but the opportunities open to them.

We are honoured to have welcomed so many talented speakers to share their experience at our training days. These are just a few…

We believe the best way to learn is hands on experience either on Set or in the Production Office. So we find work for our trainees at industry standard wages ensuring trainees receive 100% of their pay.

All trainees are graded through our unique accreditation system which accumulates days worked and experience gained. This ensures each trainee has real, professional experience at the end of the programme.

Our unique accreditation system:

How does it work?

Our grading system allows employers to see at a glance exactly what experience a new entrant has.

Every new entrant works towards a bronze, silver, gold or platinum level according to the number of days worked. They will also receive an accreditation for working with Background Artistes and with children. All this is signed off by their employer.

Future employers can trust that our trainees have exactly the experience they claim to have. And our new entrants arrive on set fully capable to do the job they’ve been hired for.

Hands on, personal support: We are perfectly positioned to provide individual professional advice and the skills to build a long term career. Every trainee receives:

• One to one help with CVs and interview technique • Face to face meetings throughout the nine months • Online and telephone support • A departmental mentor • Our training manual covering everything a new entrant needs to know • Guidance and documentation on the legal know-how for children’s working hours and the Film Artistes Association (FAA) agreement. • An online professional profile with CallTime Connect, our unique Online Database for the Film & HETV Drama Industry.

In 2017 our trainees were 20%

BAME with 10% over 30 years old

and 25% from outside London.

But we want to go further.

We aspire to offer 25% of our

places for free to trainees

from underprivileged and

underrepresented backgrounds

including work returners and

BAME applicants.

We are committed to equal

opportunities and CallTime,s

books currently have a 50:50

ratio of women and men.

Financial support

Sponsoring new entrants through the nine month training programme makes a specific and tangible difference to the quality of people rising up through the industry. It means we can attract the very best speakers and mentors and enables us to extend this programme to underrepresented groups. Your financial support will have an immediate impact on diversity.

Hands on support

We are committed to giving our trainees real and valuable experience. Could you take on one of our trainees giving an industry standard wage appropriate to their level? Any trainees we place have already received mentoring and guidance from us, and you can be assured they’ll arrive with a solid understanding of what is expected of them.

Mentoring

Could you engage with a group of diverse trainees about your chosen profession? Could you give them advice, guidance on the pitfalls and even the triumphs they may encounter and help individuals take their next step up the career ladder?

Guest Speaker

Could you discuss your career path, what led you to a career in Film and/or TV talking about how you got your break and the highs and lows along the way? Could you give our trainees an insight into what you look for in a CV and when you interview people?

Could you be a

“Joining CallTime Company’s

trainee scheme was absolutely the best thing I’ve ever done for my career. When I joined the scheme, I was a researcher in factual entertainment with only a handful of low-budget production credits under my belt. Since then, I’ve worked on big films like “Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Hunter Killer”. Currently I’m working on a Disney film, in a fantastic job that is perfectly suited to my interests and skills. I’ve found CallTime to be brilliant at matching people to the right jobs, while providing fantastic support and guidance along the way. I will forever be grateful to CallTime for taking me in and helping me to find my niche in the industry!” Amelia S. Former CallTime Trainee

“Living in rural Norfolk while wanting to work in Film

and TV can be incredibly tough. In my case I had no on set experience, no contacts and almost no clue what to do about it.

I was recommended Calltime by a friend who uses their Diary Service. I applied and joined their Foundations Trainee Scheme. A month before the scheme officially started I received an email asking for an urgent Rushes Runner in Luton, admitting that it wasn’t the most attractive job but a good place to start with a great Professional Production team. So I took the job. In taking the risk and putting myself up in hostels for 3 weeks I made serious Contacts and great friends. Cut to a month later and I’m now running with a great A.D. team on an (as yet) untitled Danny Boyle film.

As seasoned industry veterans, Vicki and Tamana are able and more than willing to provide invaluable advice in helping with these initial roles in a way that manages your expectations of the business, making you prepared and comfortable. I only wish I had known about CallTime sooner.“

“Vicki and Tam have spent the past few years working tirelessly to create a much

needed industry service, helping many young people get their ‘foot in the door’ in the Film/TV industry, while also providing a reliable platform for department heads to recruit vetted and enthusiastic daily and full-time crew members to support their teams.”

Dan Cox - 3rd AD

“Every person I have employed through CallTime Company has turned up on time,

been polite, hard-working and able to do their job well. I also get enormous support from the CallTime team who are incredibly good at matching crew with my team and for whom nothing is too much trouble. For people wanting to get into our industry and facing that notoriously difficult brick wall, CallTime Company is even more invaluable, offering training, managing expectations, getting CV’s and people into Production and ensuring that their crew are treated properly and fairly. When I need staff, they are my first phone call. I use them on every single film I work on.”

Suzie Shearer - Unit Production Manager

“Vicki and Tamana’s dedication and support has elevated me from a small,

unknown city to 1930’s New York and beyond. Their talent in finding high quality runners for the Trainee Scheme is proven by the calibre of other runners I have had the pleasure to meet on set, all of whom are quick to praise the value of Vicki and Tamana’s insight, experience and tireless assistance. We all agree that we are in a great debt to their efforts. One question remains unanswered however, do they ever sleep?”

Ongoing support The CallTime Company Diary Service

We selectively invite CallTime Foundations graduates to register with our CallTime Diary Service. We’re incredibly proud of the success of this service. Not only is it a fantastic support to industry professionals managing their availability, in just five years it’s become an essential resource for booking crew.

Page 12: Film? - Calltime FoundationsCallTime Foundations is a Community Interest Company, with all profits re-invested into the company and trainees. With over 25 years’ experience as Assistant

After graduation, I was very fortunate to have an initial gateway into the industry, and I have always been aware, however hard I worked, of my original good fortune. Consequently, I have wanted to make it easier for those who have no direct contact to find a clear path to gaining work in the Film and TV drama industry.

The aim of “Foundations”is to set up building blocks of contacts for our trainees and provide introductions to valuable connections within the Film and TV working world.

The next step then should be building a career. There is no proper guide line for this. The Film industry is not the Civil Service. However, the quality of your work on every job almost becomes an interview or an audition for the

next. For example the Production Manager I worked with on Melissa recommended me to the Assistant Directors on The Woman in White who then recommended me to the Assistant Directors on Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace....and so on.

Vicki and I are also acutely aware of how important the Role of PA is. When I was 1st AD on the 2nd Unit for 28 Weeks Later, we had 21 runners locking off Westminster for an early morning shoot. Just one tourist wandering through shot could jeopardise a whole morning’s work. Every one of those runners was essential for the safe and smooth running of the shoot. And whilst this might be just one example of many, what the Industry has taught me is the cornerstone of the CallTime Foundations: You’re only as good as your team.

‘Look around the room. These are the people that will help you get your next job’. This is one of the things we tell our new entrants on the Foundations training day. And as a perfect example of that, I worked with Tamana at the very start of my career and we’re still working together today. The idea that the people you meet along the way will shape your career is at the heart of CallTime.

Working in Film and TV production is a career that requires a strong work ethic - my second ever job was as a Daily PA working the crowd on Enigma which involved a lot of late nights and a lot of early mornings. But as the saying goes ‘choose a job you love and you’ll never do a day’s work in your life’. This was the film where I met the AD team that I would work with throughout my career on films including The Hours, The Wolfman and Around

the World in 80 days. And it was my network of PAs (now friends) that led me to work on Gosford Park, 28 Days Later and Bridget Jones’ Diary. But to build a network you have to get a foot in the door. And that can be extremely hard. We set up CallTime Foundations to change that.

Vicki Allen

BA Hons Film and Television, Salford University

“In all my film experience, there has never been an opportunity like this for young

people to be Assistant Directors and Production crew in the movie business. Now they have this because of Tamana and Vicki’s knowledge, contacts and great enthusiasm for our industry.

I would personally recommend to Production, AD’s and Locations these two wonderful experienced people who love what they do.

I know this for a fact, having worked with several of the Calltime boys and girls, who were very professional in all that they did for me and the production we were working on together.I hope that Calltime Company will be around for a very long time to come.”

Michael Stevenson - Assistant Director & BAFTA Award Winner

“One of the ever constant facts in our

industry is that a team will only last a few jobs before the PAs quite rightly want to move onwards and upwards. In the past there was always a fear of where we might find that next superstar that really makes the difference, that person you can rely on to meet an actor at 4am with a smile on their face and a hot drink in their hand, to set 50 background artists in 5 mins when you’re losing the light. A PA who can be brought into a team and instantly get on with everyone, mould and fit straight in. I really used to worry about it, but not anymore, ‘cause now there’s CallTime. Through Vicki and Tamana I’ve now met and worked with countless PAs that I might never have had the good fortune to. And now as they move forward with the next stage of their Company, CallTime Foundations, I’m looking forward to meeting the next generation of Professional New Entrants - See you at work!”

“CallTime has really opened the opportunities in the film and television

industry to a far wider group, has inspired, encouraged and supported individuals seeking to work within the industry as runners and PAs as well as representing full trained runners.

The mentoring by two excellent former ADs Tamana Bleasdale and Vicki Allen who also run the company, provides these individuals with the inside knowledge and understanding required for the “on” or “off set” requirements. Every day on every film or television series is different, and provides different opportunities, working with lots of new people, be it on a stage set in a studio, looking after the background extras in a tent in the middle of a field during the early hours , or locking down Westminster Bridge all night! The key to success as a runner/PA is being reliable, hard-working, well mannered, interacting with people from all backgrounds including actors, directors, crew, extras or the general public and having drive, enthusiasm for everything you do, giving it a one hundred percent commitment. Really loving what you do each day and making the most of the opportunities that come your way.

CallTime instils those basics and provides mentorship to new runners , and that is clearly obvious in the amount of work they handle and the level the company has grown too in such a short time. When CallTime started five years ago I said “I have little doubt that CallTime wil become a major resource in the Film and Television Industry”. It has done, and will continue to do so. Their repeat business speaks volumes.”
