May 2014 I hope that everyone had a joyful and meaningful Easter. It was good to see so many people parcipate and be involved in all the Liturgies of Holy Week. I have been in larger churches where there was less involvement. Numbers don’t mean everything but they are a good indicator of people’s dedicaon and commitment to the work of the Church. As your priest I would like to thank you for that. In some dioceses in which I have been, the priest took some me off to rest the week aſter Holy Week. I can understand that. In the diocese of Atlanta, many clergy and their spouses were invited to the diocesan camp for a retreat, and it was well aended. I took advantage of this once but since then I have not done so. Some of you may have already heard me say that taking Monday off even aſter an ordinary Sunday will put me behind for the week. My preference for a Sabbath is later in the week. What we also recognize as a paern in most churches, is that the aendance aſter Easter drops off, and I can understand that, as well, given human nature. But what I would like to draw our aen- on to is the fact that something very different occurred in the early church. Beginning those first few days aſter the resurrecon we are told that Jesus was “breathing” new life into the disciples. Even though the disciples were fearful, and actually in hiding, Jesus came to them and inspired them to go out and begin to spread the “good news” about what they had seen and experienced. They were com- pelled to do so. The life and ministry of Jesus may have come to its fulfillment and compleon in the resurrecon, but the life and mission of the church was just beginning. The reason I raise these ideas for you to consider is that in some ways we here at All Saints’ need to consider what this means for us as a church. I realize that the tempo of church life does slow down following Easter, but at the same me the call to respond to the resurrecon challenges us to find ways to share the good news in the way we do ministry. Yes, it is important for us to take a break this summer, but I would like for you to also give some thought to how you think “The Risen Lord” is calling you and our church to express the Easter Message. What you can expect is that I will be inving you into a conversaon about the vision of All Saints’. This does not necessarily mean that we will end up doing something different from what we have been doing. However, it does meant that whatever we do I hope it will be with a renewed sense of purpose and intenon. I look forward to these conversaons. I am excited about discovering what God has in mind for All Saints’ Episcopal Church. John+

May 2014

I hope that everyone had a joyful and meaningful Easter. It was good to see so many people

participate and be involved in all the Liturgies of Holy Week. I have been in larger churches where there

was less involvement. Numbers don’t mean everything but they are a good indicator of people’s

dedication and commitment to the work of the Church. As your priest I would like to thank you for that.

In some dioceses in which I have been, the priest took some time off to rest the week after Holy

Week. I can understand that. In the diocese of Atlanta, many clergy and their spouses were invited to

the diocesan camp for a retreat, and it was well attended. I took advantage of this once but since then I

have not done so. Some of you may have already heard me say that taking Monday off even after an

ordinary Sunday will put me behind for the week. My preference for a Sabbath is later in the week.

What we also recognize as a pattern in most churches, is that the attendance after Easter drops

off, and I can understand that, as well, given human nature. But what I would like to draw our atten-

tion to is the fact that something very different occurred in the early church. Beginning those first few

days after the resurrection we are told that Jesus was “breathing” new life into the disciples. Even

though the disciples were fearful, and actually in hiding, Jesus came to them and inspired them to go

out and begin to spread the “good news” about what they had seen and experienced. They were com-

pelled to do so. The life and ministry of Jesus may have come to its fulfillment and completion in the

resurrection, but the life and mission of the church was just beginning.

The reason I raise these ideas for you to consider is that in some ways we here at All Saints’

need to consider what this means for us as a church. I realize that the tempo of church life does slow

down following Easter, but at the same time the call to respond to the resurrection challenges us to

find ways to share the good news in the way we do ministry. Yes, it is important for us to take a break

this summer, but I would like for you to also give some thought to how you think “The Risen Lord” is

calling you and our church to express the Easter Message. What you can expect is that I will be inviting

you into a conversation about the vision of All Saints’. This does not necessarily mean that we will end

up doing something different from what we have been doing. However, it does meant that whatever

we do I hope it will be with a renewed sense of purpose and intention.

I look forward to these conversations. I am excited about

discovering what God has in mind for All Saints’ Episcopal Church. John+

May 4, 2014

In some traditions Easter is a “one and done” event, but not here! Easter for us is a “dynasty,” a sustained celebration of the pivotal event in our faith (not to mention Western civilization for the past two thousand years). With that in mind, the music during the Easter season will build on the momentum of Resurrection Sunday. This will include special instrumental performances by several of our youth as well as Marilyn Purkey, who has taught many area students, including some in our parish. A new anthem, Now the green blade riseth, is being written for our parish choir, organ, bassoon, and clarinet. Based on a medieval French carol, it is found in hymn form in our 1982 hymnal (#204). I must acknowledge the sustained dedication of the parish choir during Holy Week and Easter. The members of the choir made sacrifices to be at the Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, and 10:30 Easter services. In addition, there were extra rehearsals on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and 5:45am on Easter morning. Thank you!

Well, we have been busy and we have recruited new members – Yea!!!! I am pleased to announce that Judy Yates will serve as our new Community Ambassador Leader. Judy is well qualified for the job and has already made signifi-cant progress. She has appointed Edee Webb to continue to be an ambassador to the Morristown Chamber of Commerce and she will serve along with Judy and her appointees to the Chamber and other community organizations. And, as if Marylou Mauney doesn’t have enough to do, she has agreed to serve on our committee. Cindy Selby and John Hutchins are still active and I thank God for their efforts every day. Cindy will continue to write for our weekly newspaper ad and has taken the challenge to head up our College program to perhaps include Canterbury Clubs. She taught “Evangelism, Episcopalian Style” last year and there may be more of that coming. John Hutchins works with us on potential media and involving our youth and adults in exchanging information, i.e. youth teaching adults about technology and adults teaching youth about vari-ous careers and interviewing skills, etc. And how lucky are we to have Carolyn Dean on our team! The web site just gets better and better. Thank you Carolyn and I hope each of you will tell her how much you appreciate her hard work on this most important part of, not only our parish life, but in getting our message out to others who might be interested in ASEC. Father John asked us to draw a graph of our committee and thanks to Cindy, we have presented a very acceptable picture of Evangelism. More on that later. Join us on this exciting and rewarding team; we are still taking members.

UTO Ingathering to be held on Sunday, May 4

On Sunday, May 4 bring your UTO boxes, or their contents, to church to be turned in during the

regular collection. If you prefer to contribute cash or a check (made payable to UTO) put it in an

envelope marked UTO or use one provided in the pews.

Every cent that your family contributes to this fund is granted out by the UTO Committee. Administra-

tion costs are covered by other means. Examples of the grants awarded recently include:

The Anglican Church of Congo received $19,200 to renovate and equip a multi -purpose center to provide HIV/AIDS training in an area where there is ongoing civil war.

$20,000 was awarded to the diocese of Pusan in South Korea to expand a hospice program for terminal cancer patients.

The Diocese of North Central Philippines was granted $25,000 to build a new church for a congregation which had outgrown meeting in homes.

The Diocese of Haiti received $60,000 to purchase land next to the current church and school in order to expand both.

In Arkansas $7,500 was awarded Diocesan wide for the salary of a coordinator to recruit and train youth volunteers for an outreach ministry which provides food to the poor.

In Central New York the Church World Service and Episcopal Migration Ministries received $27,000 to upgrade space and equipment being used for services to refugees resettled in the Syracuse area.

Good Shepherd Ministries in Wilmington, NC was awarded $21,000 to furnish heavy duty laundry facilities for a new overnight shelter for 118 homeless people.

By giving thanks in a material way for the blessings in your life you can contribute to the aid of count-

less less fortunate people. Judy Bartholomew, UTO

Thank you to all of the ASEC members, including Father Dukes, who came out to play

in the 19th Annual Masters Golf Tourna- ment. A full report of earnings of all of our

events will be published in the Annual Report in August. We are grateful that so

many church members support the school throughout the year--by attending

events, donating goods and services and sending monetary contributions.

Before the month is over, school will be out! It’s hard to believe, but true. We would love to have you attend our

Reasons to Celebrate on Sunday, May 4, at 5pm at our campus. And please know that all parishioners are invited

our Commencement Exercises on Tuesday, May 20 in the church sanctuary at 6pm. We will be graduating 11 stu-

dents, praising their accomplishments and sending them off to high school reluctantly, but with our blessings.

I received a gracious thank you card from Carolyn Jarnigan addressed to me and all members of All Saints Episcopal Church which I have attached to the bulletin board at church. Carolyn was not at the Food on Foot warehouse when I delivered our con-tributed items; however, her husband was there and he was most appreciative of our gifts and mon-etary contributions for the purchase of Bibles. As noted in a recent issue of the Citizen Tribune, the non-profit organization more than met their goal for Easter baskets and you helped.

The Outreach committee has not met at this time; however, Father John wishes to meet with us in the near future. He has some ideas that sound very exciting.

We are continuing our support of the ASEC Youth as they work to earn their way to Washington, DC, this summer. This will be a special Outreach trip for them, so keep them in your prayers.

Also my monthly reminder of our commitment to Central Services. Food insecurity for many is still very much a problem in our improving economy…even for many who work full time, so please share what you can afford.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat…… Matthew 25:35

Blessings to all,

Ginger Goolsby

Liaison to the Vestry for Outreach

We are presently hoping to “re” form the Prayer

Shawl Ministry, which was previously under the

capable and loving hands of Terry Burke and

Peggy Brock. Terry , our dear friend, died last

year, and Peggy isn’t able to knit right now. So if

you like to knit maybe this could become “Your”

ministry. It is a quiet ministry. When the shals

are made, they are blessed and given to some-

one who is either hospitalized, maybe receiving

some kind of treatment, or maybe a veteran.

If you would like to find out more, please call me

(423) 307-8571, and I will be happy to share with

you the prayers and instructions we use.

Thank you,

Shirley DeGroff

Since our last Saints’ Alive the Youth Group has finished up the Lent Madness in Sunday school learning about many of our Episcopal Saints. The youth also did the filling of the eggs and helped run the children’s annual Easter egg hunt.

With iDYG the youth have handed out all the warm hugs they made last month for the el-derly and had movie night at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Michael “Buck”

Dwyer Eanes III

Buck will graduate in May from Morristown Hamblen West. Some of his best memories are from playing varsity football for the Trojan Nation. He also spent a lot of time with Boy Scout Troop 91, and as a result, earned his rank of

Eagle Scout last year. His favorite All Saints’ memory is the mission trip to Memphis because he had the opportunity to help those in need; in addition, he got to see a different world and that experience was truly eye opening and life changing. He plans on beginning his next adventure in August at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, where he will be working toward his mechanical engineering degree. Buck is the son of Amy and Kelly Webb and Butch Eanes, as well as the grand-son of Ann and Harold Nichols.

2014 Graduates

James Harold Gose

Jimmy Gose, the elder son of Jay and the late Linda Gose, and grandson of Jim & Sarah Gose, is a fourth generation member of his family to attend All Saint’s Episcopal Church. He was baptized and con-firmed at All Saints’ and takes part in services as an acolyte and as an usher.

Jimmy is active in All Saints’ youth activities such as the mission trip to Copper Hill in 2012, the 30 Hour Famine experience in 2013 and plans to participate in the Mission Trip to Washington, DC this summer. He has been involved with other youth activities at All Saints’ and with the iDYG representing All Saints’.

A lifetime resident of Knoxville, he is now a senior at Carter High in Strawberry Plains, TN.

Jimmy will attend Pellissippi State Community College this fall majoring in Sports Broadcast Journalism with plans to complete his Bachelors degree at MTSU or ETSU.

Allyssa Chiappetta

During my high school career, I have been a mem-ber of the tennis

and volleyball teams, and a member of the Sub Debs social club. I have participated in the All Saints’ Youth for the past four years. I have been involved in many different volunteering projects. I have been on mission trips with our youth group and with youth groups of my friends who belong to other churches. I have helped feed the Habitat for Humanity, where we made the workers lunch and got to meet and make new friendships and learn just how much those workers touch the lives of the family members they are helping. I volunteer at the Daily Bread one Saturday each month and have also started volun-teering at their new store which helps to pay the bills of the Daily Bread. I have participated in Relay for Life and the Walk for ALPS. At Christmas time I help with the toys for tots and at Thanksgiving I help make food boxes for families who are not as blessed as I am.

In our church community I am active in the Youth Group, the Altar Guild, hospitality, and greeter min-istries. In the past I have served as Acolyte and choir member. Currently I am trying to organize a fund-raiser to help build dog houses for dogs that do not have a shelter to go in.

Also during my high school years I have done babysitting for many families in our church commu-nity, I have waitressed at Java Garden, worked at Kohl’s and hosted at The Point Restaurant.

I plan to attend ETSU in the Pre-Vet program and then transfer to the University of TN Vet School to become a Veterinarian. My “BIG” dream is to open my own “No-Kill Animal Shelter” one day.

Special congratulations to Buck and

Jimmy who both received scholarships for

their continuing education from the

Whitney Blake Auton Scholarship Fund.

As the Vestry person with the portfolio of Adult Christian Formation – read Adult Sunday school and other adult learning programs– and being dumb as a stump on the concept but nevertheless terribly opin-ionated, I am soliciting members to serve on this committee with me. To this end, a) please advise of your willingness to subject yourself to this torment and b) your availability for an initial meeting in mid-May, even going so far as to suggest best meeting days/times.
