March 2018 MOVING AND LENT The process of moving your entire household from one location to another is fraught with difficulties. Timing is everything. You need to sell and close on your old home and then purchase and close on a new home in a new location. It doesnt really matter if you are moving across town or across the country. The effort it takes to pack up all of your belongings in boxes and load them up on a truck takes the same amount of effort. The hard part comes when you are unloading and unpacking everything as you try to set up a new household. On paper is looks like a straight forward process. In practice you have just entered the twilight zone. Nothing is where is should be. You find things you had no idea you owned. You cannot find items you are certain are packed. Up is down. Down is up. And everywhere you look there are boxes upon boxes. You are certain that you are dying a slow painful death as you un- pack each box with the hope that eventually this misery will end. You see, when you packed to move you didnt take the time to sort through things and get rid of stuff. No, you told the movers to pack it all up and you would sort it out when you get to your new home. That s better known as a deal with the devil my friends. So much stuff. Why do I need all of this stuff. Here is the good news about moving into a new home. It s the last chance you will get to clean houseso to speak until you move again. This is the last time you will have an opportunity to get rid of possessions that you no longer use or need. You feel lighter and more flexible. There is actually more room in your life for things that are really important to you now. Do you really need all those old VHS tapes you havent played in years? Probably not. Do you really need 40 church cookbooks when you can easily find every single recipe online? Definitely not. And of course we wont mention the skinny jeans from your college years before three children and the onset of middle age, that have been hiding away in the far corner of your closet. No, we wont talk about that. There is a time and a place to lighten up the load we carry around with us. There is a time and a place for us to let go of stuff in our lives that no longer have meaning. The same is true with our souls. There is so much we carry with us that we should have gotten rid of years ago. Still carrying a grudge about an offhand remark by a coworker that hurt your feel- ings? Let it go. Holding on to old regrets about what could have been or should have been when you chose a different path in life? Stop beating yourself up and be thankful for the blessings in life you have been given. Lent can be an opportunity for improving your spiritual life. Lent can be a gift that allows you to make significant changes in how you live. Getting rid of our spiritual baggage that weighs us down and holds us back, allows us to make room for new experiences and joys in our lives. Getting rid of the negative stuff lets us move quicker and with purpose once again. Take the opportunity that Lent presents in your life and put the things that no longer work for you out on the curb. Instead of taking on more, try doing with less. Father Mark+

MOVING AND LENT

The process of moving your entire household from one location to another is fraught with difficulties.

Timing is everything. You need to sell and close on your old home and then purchase and close on a

new home in a new location. It doesn’t really matter if you are moving across town or across the

country. The effort it takes to pack up all of your belongings in boxes and load them up on a truck takes the same amount of

effort.

The hard part comes when you are unloading and unpacking everything as you try to set up a new household. On

paper is looks like a straight forward process. In practice you have just entered the twilight zone. Nothing is where is should

be. You find things you had no idea you owned. You cannot find items you are certain are packed. Up is down. Down is up.

And everywhere you look there are boxes upon boxes. You are certain that you are dying a slow painful death as you un-

pack each box with the hope that eventually this misery will end.

You see, when you packed to move you didn’t take the time to sort through things and get rid of stuff. No, you told

the movers to pack it all up and you would sort it out when you get to your new home. That’s better known as a deal with

the devil my friends.

So much stuff. Why do I need all of this stuff. Here is the good news about moving into a new home. It’s the last

chance you will get to “clean house” so to speak until you move again. This is the last time you will have an opportunity to

get rid of possessions that you no longer use or need.

You feel lighter and more flexible. There is actually more room in your life for things that are really important to

you now. Do you really need all those old VHS tapes you haven’t played in years? Probably not. Do you really need 40

church cookbooks when you can easily find every single recipe online? Definitely not. And of course we won’t mention the

skinny jeans from your college years before three children and the onset of middle age, that have been hiding away in the far

corner of your closet. No, we won’t talk about that.

There is a time and a place to lighten up the load we carry around with us. There is a time and a place for us to let

go of stuff in our lives that no longer have meaning. The same is true with our souls. There is so much we carry with us that

we should have gotten rid of years ago. Still carrying a grudge about an offhand remark by a coworker that hurt your feel-

ings? Let it go. Holding on to old regrets about what could have been or should have been when you chose a different path

in life? Stop beating yourself up and be thankful for the blessings in life you have been given.

Lent can be an opportunity for improving your spiritual life. Lent can be a gift that allows you to make significant

changes in how you live. Getting rid of our spiritual baggage that weighs us down and holds us back, allows us to make

room for new experiences and joys in our lives. Getting rid of the negative stuff lets us move quicker and with purpose once

again.

Take the opportunity that Lent presents in your life and put the things that no longer work for you out on the curb.

Instead of taking on more, try doing with less.

To take John’s lead, “Hello All Saint’s Family”

First I want to say how excited I am to be able to serve the children and youth of All Saints’. It’s a real joy to be able to serve and work with such a great group of children, youth and leaders that support our children’s

ministries.

I see this year as an exciting and blessed adventure and hold to the truth that our children and youth programs will not just flourish but Thrive this year.

We are on track with our annual spring fundraisers. The Flamingo flocking is going well and as of Last report from John we are on target to meet our goal. So thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this another successful event at All Saints’.

We also had a wonderful turnout at our annual Mardi Gras dinner and No Talent Necessary talent show. There were more than 85 attendees and if you were not there some great talent to enjoy after dinner. We also must not forget to thank Dan for being our M.C.; great jokes with some great punch lines that only Dan could deliver, not to mention the snazzy head gear and representing for Mardi Gras. The proceeds from the Mardi Gras Dinner go to the Animal shelter for outreach from the youth each year. I also want to say what it blessing it was to see our All Saints’ family welcome those from our community and feed them not just with our lovely Mardi Gras dinner, but the warmth of fellowship. Again thank you so much to everyone who helped set up the fellowship hall, prepared the lovely meal, and participated in our talent show. Another successful event at All Saints’.

The next item on the agenda is the Easter Egg hunt for the Housing Authority. As of this date the egg hunt has been set for March 24th and additional details to follow as the date approaches. I would like to extend an invitation for those that would like to volunteer and participate in a great community outreach event. Please see either myself or John if you would like to participate.

There will be more great news and information from the Children/Youth Ministries soon.

From Your Children/Youth Vestry representative, Victor Bailey

This is an exciting time for the school and we are excited to have Mother Gigi leading us into 2018. Recently we introduced the Mission 51 scholarship program, had an open house for current and prospective families, and hosted the chamber breakfast. Upcoming events include the rummage sale 3/16-17 and golf tournament 4/20. Thank you for your continued support of the school and especially the ECW for providing lunches for the students. Father Mark, Mother GiGi, and Deacon Sarai lead chapel on Mondays and Fridays at 8. Feel free to visit and see all the great things going on at the school. Sam Neill, Vestry liaison

From the Head of School

It has been a busy month at ASES! Field trips, snow days, field trips and Valentine’s Day parties seem to have flown by! Re-enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year began February 5

th and

runs through March 5th. March 6

th begins open

enrollment. We held two Kindergarten Round-ups for presently enrolled PK students, and our Kindergarten Round-up for new students will be held February 21 at 8:15 am. We started several after-school enrichment activities and have been excited by the enthusiastic response. We are offering Volleyball camps for 1

th.

Keep in mind our annual Golf Tournament to be held at Millstone Country Club on Friday, April 20. We also want to thank the All Saints’ ECW for continuing to provide a delicious Hot Dog lunch one Monday a month. The students (and teachers!) all look forward to it!

Vestry elections are over and the new Vestry in in place. A very good group of folks excited and determined to continue our efforts to "Strive to Thrive" in all aspects of our church life. The only changes made to our ministries was the addition of an All Saints’ Episcopal School liaison to better coordinate all things church and school as we move forward. This necessitated the Youth and Children formation groups being consolidated under one liaison. Speaking of our Youth, it is great to see so many flamingoes visiting the Morristown area this year. Anoth-er great job by our youth and the adults that support them. As we are in the middle of the Lenten season, let us not forget the pillars of Lent; those being fasting, prayer, and alms giving. We have been blessed so greatly and have much to give of our time, talents, and treasure. I also ran across the following quote that meant a lot to me: "Remember that Lent and Ash Wednesday is not just about putting away the bad things. It is about creating good things and helping the poor and needy, being kind to people, and much more." - Jacob Winters Thanks you for what you do. Bill Mitrik

Adult Christian Education is proud to announce that Linda

Haas has agreed to chair this committee for the coming

year! Members have been wrestling with the ongoing problem

of how to encourage parishioners to attend Sunday

School. Linda's ideas include formal and informal surveys of

what people want to investigate and when is the best time for

this sort of spiritual development. There is no doubt that

Wednesday Bible Study and Wednesday night programming is

going strong, but the Sunday morning group has diminished to

the vanishing point. In another initiative, Henry Selby was

recently tasked by the Evangelism Committee to create a pro-

posal for an All Parish Retreat which he presented recently. It

will be shown to the Vestry for their input and reaction. If you

have any thoughts whatsoever on the role of Adult Christian

Ed (who, what, when, why, and how), please let Linda

(or Henry Selby, Vestry Liaison) know.

Parish Life has been off to a busy start! I would like to thank everyone who helped with food, setup and cleanup of Father Mark’s reception. Especially to Blue McGowan who was the calm to my storm!

Things to note for 2018:

• ECW of East Tennessee bra project…please contact

me with questions or donations…Project thru Easter Sunday (I have an informative handout from convention)

• Please return dishtowels

• New hospitality rotas with instructions for cleanup af-

ter 8:00 and 10:30 services

• We are looking at clean up crew sign ups for each

reception…please let me know if you would be inter-ested in helping

• BBQ sauce making will be April 7 with location to be

determined

• Tentative date of first men’s meeting March…Details

to be announced!

• We are exploring the option to host receptions be-

tween services to bridge gap between 8:00 and 10:30 parishioners

• Return of the Sinners and Saints party late summer/

early fall Please contact me with any questions or suggestions about Parish Life! I am looking forward to an exciting year!

Parishioners responded to the tune of $301.00 for the loose offering in January for Helping Hands Clinic. Also they filled the basket in the parish hall with items from the Helping Hands Clinic wish list. From what I understand volunteering at the Clinic is possible if you’re interested give them a call 423-581-4100 or visit their website at www.helpinghandsclinictn.com Kim Hall from Noah’s Arc was the guest speaker for February. She explained how Noah’s Arc functions and had

handouts for distribution if one is interested in learning more.

March – Serenity House will receive the loose that month and in April it will be the Mooresburg Community Association

“Meals in the Hills”. Serenity House will be opening their new (remodeled facility) in March so please keep them in

mind for the loose offering for them on March 11th. There will be a speaker on March 7th talking about the new facility

during the Wednesday Agape meal.

The filling of the bags for Food on Foot bag will be March 7th and March 21st. This of course is during the Agape Dinner

on Wednesdays. Distribution of the bags will be Saturday March 24th at 11am at Food on Foot. They are located on 1

Berkline Drive in Morristown. The fourth Saturday of the month is the day All Saints’ parishioners assist with handing

out the bags of food.

Bingo is back on the second Wednesday at noon in March. That will be March 14th. Marylou will keep us all up to date

on what is needed for the meal and the prizes.

It is starting to warm up but winter is not over yet. MATS provides a warming station for those truly homeless when the

temperate is below 32 degrees at 10pm. We will have a few more evenings like that. A few parishioners have been

providing a meal for those homeless on those cold nights. Pizza or casseroles (in a disposable pan) are a couple of ideas

for feeding these folks. If you are so inclined just call MATS during the day 423-587-9215 and let them know you want

to bring some food by. You have to deliver it between 7pm and 8pm someone even provided a loaf of bread and pea-

nut butter and jelly so sandwiches are fine too.

Larry McGowan, Vestry Outreach Liaison

Announcing acolyte training after the

10:30 service on March 4th for all current

and interested acolytes.

Food will be provided.

We are in need of more adults to serve, so

please consider joining us at the training.

“It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.”

Irish Proverb

As I am sitting and writing this, my back door is open, my kitchen floor is freshly mopped, and I am

listening to the soundtrack of Lonesome Dove. The smell of Mr. Clean Fresh Lemon Scent is permeating

the air as is my new Sweet Apple candle from Walmart. It is almost Spring. Hope is in the air. The dogs

are outside.

And I find myself thankful. Thankful for many things. Thankful for family. Thankful for my friends.

Thankful for clean food and water. Thankful for this church which I call ‘Home’. And, yes, thankful for

our house which has provided us shelter for 25 years. But, most of all ~ I am thankful for this Season of

Lent.

Lent is that time each year in which we are given the opportunity to re-engage with ourselves and, truly,

one another. To listen with our heads and our hearts to well, – our hearts – and to each other. And to that

voice of God in our daily lives. To have a clearer vision of our fellow companions ~ in this journey of Life.

I believe that it is appropriate for Lent to be during a time that is flux in the turning of the temperatures of

our climate as well as our souls. When one day we are curled up under a blanket as a cocoon to the cold and

the world outside. Then the next day, throwing open the windows and doors to the atmosphere and the

warmth of one another.

Lent is that time when we are called to just ‘Be’. To remember that dust of which we are. To dwell ~ and to

live into ~ not just our own lives ~ but, perhaps into the lives of others. To serve our souls and our bodies.

And, in turn, reflect that service out into the community. To be the hands and the heart of Christ not just

to the body within our church building’s walls. But, also to that community whom we find ourselves

listening, talking, and sharing with. Those whom we literally break bread with. Who are seeking shelter.

Who are seeking Life.

And ~ in that ~ we find shelter and Life for ourselves. Renewed.

I am so thankful for the hands and hearts of Christ within this church of All Saints’. May this Season of

Lent continue to be a Blessing to ALL who seek ‘Shelter’ ~ and Life to the Full through Him who made us

and loves us – ALL.

Truly,

Deacon Sarai
