STORYLINES

KNOW THE OPPONENT: NC STATE WOLFPACK• The Irish close out the fall break road trip with the NC State Wolfpack for the

ninth time in school history Sunday afternoon.• The Irish lead the series 6-2 all-time over the Wolfpack but it is split 2-2 for

games played in Raleigh.• Last time Notre Dame and NC State squared off, the Irish came out on top

against the 21st-ranked Wolfpack 2-1 at Alumni Stadium. Karin Muya got the Irish in front in the first five minutes but NC State quickly equalized in the 10th minute. The game-winner came from Jen Westendorf after she tapped in an Eva Hurm cross that was deflected off the bar. The win gave the Irish their first ranked win of the season.

• The Wolfpack come into Sunday’s matchup with a 7-5-4 record and a 2-2-4 mark in ACC play.

• NC State is coming off a 3-2 overtime win at home against Syracuse Thursday night.

• With two matches left for each team in ACC play, Sunday’s game will have a big impact on the standings for the upcoming ACC Tournament. The Irish currently sit tied for 6th with 11 points and NC State is eighth with 10 points. The top-8 teams qualify for the ACC Championship and heading into Sunday, teams 4-10 are separated by just six points.

IRISH FACTS AND FIGURES• The Irish are sixth in the ACC in goals against per game (0.88) and are one

of eight ACC teams that are averaging one goal or less allowed per game.• Sammi Fisher leads the team with 15 points and is tied with Eva Hurm for

the team lead in goals with five.• Brooke Littman leads the squad with six shutouts in 10 games this season.

She has allowed eight goals in 940:00 minutes of game time, good for a 0.77 goals against average.

• Littman currently ranks second in the ACC in shutouts (6) and seventh in the conference in goals against average (0.77).

• 10 different players have scored so far this season after only eight different players scored during the entire 2018 campaign.

• Sammi Fisher notched her first career hat trick in the 3-0 win over Miami. It was Notre Dame’s first hat trick since 2013 when Cari Roccaro scored three against No. 21 Maryland.

• Fisher tied a Notre Dame record for most goals in a half when she scored all three in the second half. Fisher’s goals all came in a span of 11:58 minutes of game time.

• The Irish have four players that have tallied a brace so far this season. Eva Hurm and Luisa Delgado scored twice against Northwestern and Autumn Smithers scored both goals against Western Michigan. Kiki Van Zanten was the latest Irish to tally a brace in the win over Pitt.

WINGATE’S EQUALIZER LEADS IRISH TO DRAW AGAINST NO. 9 DUKE• The Irish kicked off their fall break trip with another top-10 road matchup

Thursday night against the ninth-ranked Duke Blue Devils.• Duke struck first in the 36th minute and kept the 1-0 lead late into the

match before the Irish got the much needed equalizer.• After sustaining much of the possession in the second half, Erin Hohnstein

flicked a pass from Jade Gosar up into the box for a streaking Olivia Wingate.• Wingate got behind the Duke defense and after a touch, fired the shot past

the keeper for the goal.• Neither team scored in extra time and the Irish and Blue Devils picked up a

crucial point as ACC play is winding down in the final weeks of the season.

FISHER’S HAT TRICK CARRIES IRISH OVER MIAMI• Another dominant performance on both sides of the ball saw the Irish take

down Miami 3-0 on Thursday night at Alumni Stadium.• The Irish recorded their third-straight home shutout in the win and the sixth

shutout they have had at home this season.• After a scoreless first half, Sammi Fisher provided the second half fireworks

with three goals in the opening 15 minutes of the half.• It is her first career hat trick and the first Irish hat trick since Cari Roccaro did

it against No. 21 Maryland on Sept. 26, 2013.• Fisher tied the Notre Dame record for most goals in the second half with

three. She ties four former players, the most recent coming from Melissa Henderson on Oct. 21, 2011 against DePaul.

• Brooke Littman picked up her fifth shutout of the season and third in ACC play in the 1-0 win.

IRISH DEFENSE LEADS TO 3-0 WIN OVER SYRACUSE• The Irish continued its strong play at home with the 3-0 win last Friday

against Syracuse.• Notre Dame got up early in the fifth minute after earning a throw-in in the

offensive third. Shannon Hendricks tossed it into Sammi Fisher who flicked the ball over her head into the box. Eva Hurm beat her defender to the ball and headed it home for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

• The Irish lead doubled in the second half after Hurm’s pass into the box deflected off a Syracuse defender into the back of the net for an own goal.

• The final goal of the match came off a superb shot from Luisa Delgado. After making a run just outside the box, she sent a curling shot past the Syracuse keeper for the goal.

• Brooke Littman tallied her fourth shutout of the season after the Irish did not allow a shot for the second time this season.

VAN ZANTEN’S BRACE LEADS IRISH OVER PITT• The Irish had another strong offensive performance at Alumni Stadium in

the 4-0 win over Pitt.• It was the third game this season with four goals at home and all three

games were shutouts.• The Irish recorded their sixth shutout of the season and have only allowed

seven goals in 10 games.• The Irish defense only allowed one shot on the night and it did not reach

frame, the third game this season they have not allowed a shot on goal.• Brooke Littman was in net and tallied her third shutout of the season. She

has only allowed one goal in 360:00 of play.• Kiki Van Zanten scored twice making the fourth Irish player this season with

a brace.

STORYLINES

HURM’S VOLLEY PUSHES IRISH PAST GOLDEN GRIZZLIES• The Irish closed out their Michigan road swing with a 1-0 win over Oakland

at Oakland Soccer Field.• In the first meeting between the two schools in Rochester, Eva Hurm’s tally

in the 31st minute was the only score from either team as both defenses get opportunities at a minimum.

• The Irish held the Golden Grizzlies without a shot for the entire game to pick up their third shutout in a row and fifth of the season.

• It is the fewest shots in a game since the Irish allowed just one in a 1-0 win over Syracuse on Oct. 8, 2015.

• It is the second game this season that the Irish have not allowed a shot on goal. In the 4-0 win over St. John’s, they allowed three shots but none of them reached target.

VAN ZANTEN’S LATE GOAL LIFTS IRISH OVER WOLVERINES• The Irish faced off with one of their fiercest rivals Friday night in Ann Arbor

when they took on the Wolverines for the first time since 2016.• It was a back and forth affair for most of the match as both teams had

sustained runs with a number of chances.• Mattie Interian made two crucial stops in the first half to keep the score

level after the Wolverines mounted a strong counter-attack.• In the second half, the Irish had sustained more pressure and it paid off in

the final minutes.• Luisa Delgado contained the throw in and sent a pass up towards Jenna

Winebrenner. The pass set up Winebrenner for the cross towards the far post in the box where Kiki Van Zanten lost her defender and headed the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

• It was Van Zanten’s first career goal and she was the eighth different Irish athlete to score this season.

• Interian finished the night with a season-high four saves and the sophomore keeper has not allowed a goal in 270:00 of play this season.

OFFENSE CONTINUES TO SHINE AGAINST ST. JOHN’S• After a tough 2-1 road win at Western Michigan, the Irish returned to the

friendly confines of Alumni Stadium and the offense picked up where it left off against Northwestern.

• Notre Dame tallied another four-goal performance en route to its third shutout of the season when it defeated St. John’s 4-0.

• Camryn Dyke got the Irish started with her first career goal in the 35th minute. It was the first goal for the Irish in the first half this season after scoring all 7 previous goals in the second half through the first three games.

• The Irish had another big second half with another first career goal coming in the opening minutes of the half.

• Luisa Delgado boxed off a defender and sent a cross towards Jenna Winebrenner at the far post. Winebrenner one-timed the shot into the back of the net for her first career goal.

• Another cross from Delgado set the Irish up for their third goal of the afternoon. After a fantastic through ball from Sammi Fisher, Delgado sent

a cross to the top of the box for Brooke VanDyck. VanDyck volleyed the cross past the keeper for her first goal of the season.

• The final tally of the night came from a set piece started by Maddie Mercado. She sent a free kick towards the far post where Kate O’Connor headed it towards goal. It hit the post and was traveling on the goaline until Olivia Wingate chested the ball in for her first goal of the season.

SMITHERS LEADS COMEBACK WIN OVER WESTERN MICHIGAN• Notre Dame hit the road for the first time in 2019 to take on Western

Michigan in Kalamazoo.• It was a familiar place for both head coach Nate Norman and assistant coach

Lauren Sinacola as both held the held job of the Broncos prior to Notre Dame.

• The Irish conceded the first goal of the season in the opening half and trailed 1-0 at the break.

• A lineup adjustment by Norman paid dividends early in the second half.• Autumn Smithers moved from center back to center forward and scored the

equalizer in the 49th minute after the feed from Sammi Fisher.• Later in the half it was Smithers again, this time off an assist from Brooke

VanDyck, to put the Irish ahead in the 76th minute. • Smithers returned to center back following the second goal and the Irish

held off the Broncos to claim their third straight win to begin the season.

SECOND HALF FLURY LEADS IRISH PAST NORTHWESTERN• After the first 45 minutes against Northwestern, the Irish and Wildcats were

deadlocked at 0-0 with neither team having many offensive chances but that all changed in the second half.

• The Irish had a flurry of opportunities in the attacking third and turn it into four goals in the opening 20 minutes of the second half.

• Eva Hurm got it started in the 48th minute with an incredible goal straight from the corner kick that curled over the keeper and into the back of the net.

• Moments later, Brianna Martinez won a battle with two Northwestern defenders and sent the ball up into the box. She laid a back pass to Delgado who had stopped in the middle of the box. Delgado wasted no time and fired the pass low and into the back of the net for her first career goal and increased the Irish lead.

• Hurm was at it again in the 58th minute after Brooke VanDyck had some fancy footwork around a few Northwestern defenders. VanDyck sent a through ball in for Hurm who drew the keeper out and slotted the ball low and inside the far post for her second career brace.

• The final goal of the afternoon came from Delgado but it was all set up by Hurm. Hurm got to a loose ball at midfield and immediately sent it forward to Delgado who was on a run past two Northwestern defenders. The Wildcat keeper came out to tackle the ball away but Delgado deflected it back towards the wide open net for her first career brace.

FISHER FROM THE SPOT PUSHES IRISH OVER SAINT LOUIS• The Irish got off to a strong start to the 2019 season thanks to Sammi Fisher

providing the lone goal of the match in Notre Dame’s 1-0 win over Saint

Louis. • The Irish held the majority of possession in the match but the score

remained 0-0 heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation. • Kiki Van Zanten got it all started when she pressured the Billikens back pass

to their keeper.• Van Zanten made a play on the ball and had a wide open net after getting

by the keeper but Niehaus pulled her down to force a penalty.• Fisher stepped up to the ball and calmly struck it into the back of the net

after she caught the new Billiken keeper leaning during her approach. • The Irish defense held off the Saint Louis attack in the final 15 minutes for

the shutout.• Littman made four saves in net and recorded her sixth career clean sheet.

EXPERIENCED BACK LINE• The Notre Dame defense will be one of its strengths due to the amount of

experience that returns for the 2019 season.• The Irish will have two graduate students (Shannon Hendricks and Autumn

Smithers) on the back line along with junior Jenna Winebrenner and sophomore Brianna Martinez.

• Out of a possible 76 games last season, the four defenders started 72 games during the 2018 season.

• Hendricks started every game for the Irish for the second straight season and was second among defenders with 1,368 minutes.

• Smithers comes to the Irish from San Francisco where she started all 20 games for the Dons last season.

• Smithers earned All-WCC second team honors along with All-West Region accolades from the United Soccer Coaches.

• Smithers logged a team-high 1,793 minutes and had a career best four goals, two of which were game winners.

• Martinez dazzled in her freshman season with the Irish with 16 starts in 17 games and the only game missed was due to illness.

• Martinez was one of two freshmen to start 10+ games last season and she played all 90 minutes seven times.

• After the season, Martinez played with the U-20 Women’s National Team at the Nike International Friendlies and the La Manga Tournament in Spain.

• Winebrenner had a breakout campaign in her sophomore season, playing in all 18 games and started the last 16 games of the season.

• She was third among defenders with 1,357 minutes and played all 90 minutes nine times.

FISHER AND HURM TO LEAD OFFENSIVE ATTACK • Following strong sophomore campaigns in 2018, juniors Sammi Fisher and

Eva Hurm return as the team’s top attack options.• Fisher started 16 games for the Irish last season and set career highs in

goals (4), assists (2), points (10) and minutes played (1,145). • Fisher is the leading goal scorer returning for the Irish and had her second

career multi-goal game when she tallied both scores in the 2-0 win on the road last season against Pitt.

• Fisher was instrumental in the comeback win over Cincinnati and she tallied the assist on Karin Muya’s game-winning goal in the 72nd minute.

STORYLINES

• Hurm also started 16 games last season and set career highs in goals (3), points (8) and minutes (1,187).

• Hurm got off to a fast start in the 2018 season, scoring the first goal for the Irish in the home opener and finished with her first career brace in the 3-1 win over Central Michigan.

• Hurm tallied the assist on Jen Westendorf’s game-winning goal in the 2-1 home win over No. 21 NC State.

• Both Hurm and Fisher scored in the 5-1 road win over Syracuse. It was the highest scoring output of the season for the Irish and the most goals they have scored in an ACC road game in school history.

DUO OF LITTMAN AND INTERIAN RETURN IN NET • In 2018, the Irish saw sound production from both Brooke Littman and

Mattie Interian in goal.• Littman played in 11 games and led the keepers in minutes played with

926:05.• She played all 91 minutes in the 1-0 overtime shutout win over Stony

Brook and made a season-high five saves in the opening win against Central Michigan.

• Littman allowed one goal or less in five of her 10 starts and the Irish were a perfect 5-0 in those games.

• Interian had eight starts for the Irish in her first collegiate season and led the team in saves with 35 and a 1.68 goals against average.

• She started for two of the three shutouts the Irish recorded in 2018 and both were on the road in ACC play. The first came in a 1-0 win at Wake Forest and the second was a 2-0 win at Pitt.

YOUTH INFUSION FOR 2019 • In Nate Norman’s second season at the helm of the Fighting Irish, another

strong class of freshmen will be joining the ranks in 2019. • The Irish welcome nine freshmen to the team that has routinely had

strong production from their incoming class in their first year on campus.• The 2019 freshman class is highly touted with a number of players earning

top marks during their high school careers.• Kiki Van Zanten competed on the U17 Women’s National team, was a

United Coaches Association All-American and United Soccer Coaches High School Scholar All-America.

• Maddie Mercado was a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American and was a member of the U14-U17 US Youth National Team.

• Elizabeth Franklin was a two-time All-State selection, won the Washington State Championship at 2015 and participated in the 2018 High School All-American Game in Orlando, Fla.

• Erin Hohnstein participated in the US National team pool and camps for U14, U16, U17 and U19, played in the ECNL National Finals twice and ECNL National Championship once.
