enjoy! FIG® MEDIA

WHAT’S A QR CODE? In this issue, we have used these nifty little

Quick Response Codes for quick and easy

linking to the best food in Media. Find out what’s

for breakfast, lunch or dinner at any one of

the 12 foodie hotspots throughout the book.

phone at the QR Code and away you go.

Media. You could just eat this place from the ground up. Fat strawberries and mushrooms seduced from the earth. Bold curries and coffees percolating in the air. You can Zagat or bag it. It’s raw: the sushi, leafy chard and even the milk. It’s well-done: global, local, everywhere a fresh dish. So much fairly traded, yet so good it’s sinful. White linen on a table for two. Red gingham on a farmers’ market table for everyone. Get each day your daily bread: freshly baked. Sound appetizing? Sate your imagination with experience. It’s the best course. And far, far tastier. So, eat up. Eat down. Eat all around.

Media has great taste. Sample every one of the 40+ restaurants in this foodie destination. Start by visiting some of our favorite palate-pleasing eateries as seen on the following pages of this issue of Fig®.

HAL TAUSSIG fair trade champion

authentic

NOT DEFINING A PERSON BY HIS ONE TOWERING ACCOMPLISHMENT CAN BE A CHALLENGE. Hal Taussig, for example, is Mr. Fair Trade — to his family, friends, business associates and even Martha Stewart. He did, of course, launch the movement in Media, making it the first Fair Trade town in America. And yes, as he likes to say modestly, “Media was ready.” He even has

his own blend of Fair Trade coffee: Hal’s Blend. Might this be, though, because he’s such the real deal? Smiling broadly on each label, Hal offers “cheers” to Equal Exchange for putting “full flavor and integrity in every cup.” If he could be labeled, the same adjectives would stick to Hal with great ease. But a label is close to a brand. A brand is close to consumerism. And consumerism, insists Hal, “doesn’t make people happy.” (So what does? Read the rest of Hal’s story online at figmediapa.com to find out ... )

La Belle Epoque & Picasso “My family taught me how to cook. It’s in my genes.”

Fitting, because the moment you enter La Belle Epoque & Picasso you are warmly

greeted by friends & familiar faces—one great big family.

NATALIE GRAHAM Seven Stones Cafe The devotion of Seven Stones Cafe’s staff is making people feel good with an emphasis on fresh ingredients in a comfortable setting. “My good taste is inspired by local ingredients —and, of course, my family. My mom especially. We’re Italian, food is our life!” See us on page 10

CHRISTINA BAIR Sligo

ZAIL S. SHERGILL Shere-E-Punjab Come taste the results of a thorough education at Shere-E-Punjab. Pushpinder Singh, owner of Shere-E-Punjab, credits his father, Zail, a chef of 25 years, for his knowledge of authentic Indian cuisine. His chicken tikka masala is a palate-pleasing favorite. Broiled in the tandoor and cooked in a rich creamy sauce of tomatoes, onions and herbs, the taste—and aroma—is hard to resist. See us on page 32

hat makes a signature dish? Media’s restaurants are happy to offer you their

tried-and-true recipe. Locally grown values, fresh-picked creativity and a pinch

of global flavor all make for a very special dish that nourishes both the body and spirit.

Food is a connector. When we eat, we share time and conversation with the people we love. We consume—directly—the intimate handwork of

our chefs. We support local farmers, growers and market owners. And we reconnect with ourselves. In an age of constant stimulation, mealtime offers a break from chaos—a moment of reflection. Technology may change, but the comforting allure of a fresh-baked slice of pie remains constant.

A brisk walk through Media’ s downtown reveals a diverse tapestry of eateries and inviting aromas—a treat for the senses. Stop in for a cup at Seven Stones Cafe and you may find yourself sipping on fair-trade Colombian coffee while your ears soak up the sounds of live music. Sample the sushi at Margaret Kuo’s and you might also marvel at your plate’s museum-worthy composition and color palette.

So what is Media’s signature dish? The answer is simple—it’s all about the mix.

TYLER ARBORETUM: a sanctuary in nature

cont inue reading about Ty ler Arboretum and Media Real Estate at figmediapa.com

Cell Phones. iPods. Emails. Texts. YEARNING TO DISCONNECT? Tyler Arboretum is the antidote —650 magnificent acres of blossoms, birds, butterflies and towering trees in the heart of Delaware County. Here, the voices in your ear are the winds rustling through canopies of truly healthy forest, including over 26 of the original champion trees planted by Minshall and Jacob Painter in 1830 over a century after the land was sold to their ancestors by William Penn. Four of the trees, like the breathtaking Cedar of Lebanon, are officially the largest of their type in Pennsylvania. Or, perhaps what you’ll hear is your own gasp as you try to take in crabapples, magnolias, cherries and lilacs that exist nowhere else, or the over 13 acres of award-winning rhododendrons, all in bloom at once.

Or ... maybe, it’ll sound something like this:“Come on, MOM!” a pig-tailed tot in a t-shirt emblazoned with “Little Girls, Big Dreams” urges. “This one’s Tinker Bell!” Racing wide-eyed through the “Pixie’s House,” one stop on the Magical Habitats Exhibit running through October 30, the young girl is one of 7,000 school children who come to Tyler each year to learn about plants, environmental responsibility—and of course gnomes, fairies and their enchanted friends.

Tyler may be serene, but it’s far from passive. Tyler boasts over 100 programs, exhibits and special events annually—for both children and adults—from spring flowers to fall pumpkin days. Patrons can participate in weekly guided bird and wildflower walks; historic rambles; and woodland, wetland and meadow hikes. Or, visitors can feel free to navigate independently the over 20 miles of marked trails. Getting disconnected has never sounded so exquisite.

Like any board of directors, the one at Tyler sets policies for the staff to implement—but with one big difference, stresses third-year Board of Trustees president Jeffry Cadorette: “We as board members are stewards and privileged to be so.” Inspired by the significant, philanthropic contributions from BiIl Strine and his wife Judy—herself a previous board member for nine years—as well as by his own very personal dedication to nature, Jeffry believes strongly that “the torch has been passed to us.”

This means having a very “hands-on” board to help stimulate an understanding of our living world. As such, the board has “ramped up” education in recent years to make Tyler more of a destination for children and families and has implemented successful fundraising, like the Arboretum’s signature fundraiser begun by Bill and Jeffry nine years ago: Tyler at Twilight, an under-the-stars silent and live auction. Both of these efforts—and the board’s myriad others— are transforming Tyler from a “hidden jewel” into a regional destination. And not just with dollars.
