NEWPORTHARBOR

THE EXCHANGE CLUBOF NEWPORT HARBOR

As one of Newport Beach’s service clubs, the Exchange Club of

Newport Harbor is a cornerstone in our city’s history. Today, it is the oldest re-

maining club of its type in Newport Beach.

The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor began on December 16, 1926

as a business luncheon club. Members of the charter club were the city’s most

entrepreneurs. L.L. Isabel, Theodore Robins, Dr. Gordon Grundy, and

Chief of Police Hodgkinson were some of our club’s founders.

Over the years, it has grown into one of the premier groups in Newport

Beach. Today’s membership is a hard working group of men, dedicated to the

Americanism, youth projects and support for our community.

“When I fi rst heard about the Field of Honor event I didn’t realize how much of an impact this would have on the community. The importance and signfi cance in showing respect to our Veterans has become one of the highlight events of the year. This community should be proud of what the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor has done.”- Richard Lyon, Rear Admiral, SEAL, USN (Ret)

“The Field of Honor, as the star spangled spectacle is known. The honor that is given to the soldiers coming home today takes your breath away.”- Army Capt. R.B. Alexander

“The Newport Harbor Exchange Club does an outstanding job of commemo-rating Armed Forces Day. Our commu-nity is blessed to recognize those who serve and have served our nation in the glorious fashion.”- John Moorlach

“To be in partnership with Newport Harbor Exchange Club and have an opportunity to host this spectacular tradition in one our parks and pay tribute our nation’s heroes is truly an honor and something the City of Newport Beach is so proud to be a part of. We salute our Armed Forces for their true heroism and welcome all to Castaways Park to partake in the Field of Honor.” - Laura Detweiler, MA, Director Recreation & Sr Services Department

“Newport Beach is proud of the yearly Field of Honor’s grand fl ag display and the fi lm that you share throughout the year with other organizations, reminding us to stand proud as Americans and honor our military.” - Evelyn Hart, Former Mayor and Council-woman, City of Newport Beach

“The Field of Honor is an inspiring and powerful way to honor all the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces. I’m impressed every year by the emotional and heartfelt way the Newport Harbor Exchange Club recognizes the sacrifi ceses and the service of our military forces and their families.” - Colonel F. Lee Reynolds, US Army Reserve

Each year the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor presents a Field of Honor recognizing the service of the men and women of the American military forces. The fi eld consists of 1,776 large American fl ags proudly displayed along the paths of beautiful Castaways Park in Newport Beach overlooking the Newport Back Bay and the Pacifi c Ocean. Each fl ag may be dedicated in honor of a person who has served in any branch of the American military either currently or in the past, in peacetime or in times of combat. We have been honored to have fl ags dedicated to soldiers as far back as the American Revolutionary War and for most periods since. The name of the Honoree is attached to a ribbon and placed on the fl agpole along with any photos or other memorabilia that the Donor who dedicated the fl ag wishes to add.

The fl ags are on display for several days over the Armed Forces Day weekend which is the third Saturday in May. At the end of the event, each dedicated fl ag may be claimed by the donor to proudly display at their home or busi-ness. Event sponsors that are entitled to multiple fl ags according to the amount of their donation may collect the fl ags for display at their business or distribute them along with their Certifi cate of Authenticity to their employees or customers. They may also donate the fl ags to any charity or organization of their choice.

All of the net proceeds from the event are distributed to organizations that support military families as well as other local community charities.
