Antibiotics. Type's What they kill and substitutes

With the coming times looking kind of troubled, I thought I would start something on antibiotics. Unless yourhave a understanding doc, over the counter antibiotics are limited. Unless you think out side the box. PetAntibiotics for the mot part are the same as human. You do need to know your allergies so that you don'tgive penicillin to a cillian allergic patient. Also knowing what type of infection is good to know. One of theprimary I keep on hand is Keflex, Tetracycline and teramycin. All are available over the counter at a good

feed store. Another source is a good aquarium supply shop. Thats where I get my tetracycline. Penicillin isOK, but with the ease of getting the 4th gen drugs there are better choices. Next Vet Meds

Part 2 Dangers of Animal AntibioticsThe active ingredients of animal antibitoics are the same as for human. The main differance is what is calledthe BINDER. The chemical that binds the antibiotic to the carrier. This is where the 90% of reactions takeplace when using vet antibiotics. A good rule of thumb is to try1/8 to a max of 1/4 of the ususal dose. Wait18-24 hours and then double it. If after another 12 hours it SHOULD be safe for that patient. During thistime it is best to have Benadryl or better yet epinephrine on hand to combat possible reaction. This does eatin to time of treatment but you can't treat a dead person. If there is no reaction the doseing can be increasedto make up for lost time. As a rule an infection caught early enough will respond.

Second: the expirations on vet meds are not as closely monitored as with humans. Usually, an agent can be

okay for six months past the stated expiration (and, you sometimes can't trust the stated expiry on vetmeds); after that, no effect. Worse problem, with tetracyclic antibiotics (tetracyclines themselves, doxycycline and similar), the expiration is critical. Two weeks after the expiration date, these agents can andfrequently do becomenephrotoxic or toxic to the kidneys. Vet meds CAN save your life, but my advise is toget to know a doc that willkeepyou with an antibiotic script and renew it for you and your family members.BUT it is a good Idea tohave a stock of vetmeds on hand "for just in case"

NEXT Time Bugs and what drugs kills em

Types of antibiotics and the bugs they kill

OK folks now we start getting technical here. This is the current list of anitbiotics what they are made from

and how they kill bacteria. After this installment I'll discuss the "natural" antibiotics, Colloidal silver,

    essentiaL oils and differnet plants.

    Common Antibiotics

    http://library.thinkquest.org/25462/list.html

Beta lactum antibiotics are chemicals that contain the 4-membered beta lactum ring. They areproduced by the fungus molds Penicillium and Cephalosporium. These antibiotics inhibit the last step in thebacterium's cell wall synthesis. Beta lactum antibiotics are useful against Gram-positive bacteria. Around300-500 people die each year from an allergy to a beta lactum antibiotic. There are several kinds of betalactum antibiotic:

Natural Penicillins are produced by fermentation of the fungus Penicillium notatum chrysogenum.

They include Pencillin G and Penicillin V. They will kill streptococcus, gonococcus and staphylococcus.

They are usually not effective against Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria.

Cephalolsporins are similar to penicillins and are made from a species of Cephalosporium. They are

used as penicillin substitutes, and in surgical prophylaxis.

Semisynthetic penicillins were first used in 1959. A mold produces the main part of themolecule, which is then altered chemically. These antibiotics are usually constructed to have certainadvantages over natural penicillins. Sometimes, chavulanic acid is added to a synthetic penicillin to extendthe life of the drug. Here are some types of semisynthetic penicillin:

Amoxycillin and Ampicillin are useful not only on Gram-positive bacteria, but also on some Gram-

    negative bacteria.

Clavamox, also called augmentin, is prepared by adding chavulanic acid to amoxycillin. Clavulanic

acid is made from Streptomyces clavuligerus.

Bacitracin is an antibiotic produced by a Bacillus species. It prevents the growth of the cell wall.Because of its high toxicity, it is not systemically used. It is used in topic antibiotics, and to sterilize thebowel before surgery, since it is not absorbed by the digestive tract.

Polymyxin is an antibiotic produced by Bacillus polymyxis. It works by inhibiting cell membrane growth. It is rather toxic to humans, so is therefore usually used only as a topical antibiotic. Occasionally, it is used totreat urinary tract infections, however it must be used under close hospital supervision, for it will easilydamage the kidney and other organs.

Tetracyclines are a family of eight antibiotics, all products of Sptromyces. Some of these can now beproduced synthetically. Tetracyclines block protein synthesis on isolated ribosomes. It concentrates in certaintypes of ribosomes possesed only by bacteria, so it is not toxic to the animal. Because of their extremely lowtoxicity, they were overused in the medical community, and now there is widespread resistance totetracyclines. However, they are still useful in treatment of some diseases, such as Lyme disease. Someexamples of tetracyclines are:

    Tetracycline

    Chlortetracycline

    Doxycycline is a semisynthetic tetracycline.

Chloramphenicol is produced by Streptomyces venezuelae. It works by inhibiting translation duringprotein synthesis. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is currentlyproduced by chemical synthesis. Chloramphenicol causes aplastic anemia in a small percentage of patients, and ever since that was discovered, chloramphenicol has been used very little in non life-threateningsituitions.

Macrolides are produced by Streptomyces erythreus. Their chemical structures contain large lactonerings linked through glycoside bonds with amino sugars. Macrolides are inhibitors of protein synthesis. Theyare effective against Gram-positive bacteria and most Gram-negative bacteria, Neissera, Legionella, and Haemophilus, but not Enterobacteriaceae. The most important macrolides are:

    Erythromycin

    Oleandomycin

Aminoglycosides are products of Spectromyces griseus. They are protein synthesis inhibitors bindingto bacterial ribosomes to prevent the initiation of protein synthesis. They can be used against a wide varietyof both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Aminoglycoside usage has been limited becauseprolonged use has been found to cause kidney damage and injury to the auditory nerves, leading todeafness. Some examples of Aminoglycosides are:

Streptomycin has its primary use for treating tuberculosis patients.

Gentamicin is used against many strains of Grma-positive and Gram-negative bacteria,

    including Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Kanamycin is a complex of three different antibiotics. It is effective against many gram-positive

bacteria, including penicillin-resistant staphlococci, even at low concentrations.

Tombramycin, along with gentamicin, are the principal antibiotics used for treatments

    against Pseudomonas infections.

Nalidixic acid is a synthetic chemotheraputic agent effective against Gram-negative bacteria. It bindsto DNA gyrase enzyme (topoisomerase) and inhibits DNA duplication. It is a member of a group ofcompounds called the quinolones. It is mainly used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, and will killseveral types of Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli, Enterobacteriaceae aerogenes,K. pneumoniae,

and Proteus species, which are common causes of urinary tract infections. It is not effectiveagainst Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Gram-positive bacteria are usually resistant.

Rifamycins are produced by Streptomyces mediterranei. They inhibit transcription in eubacterial RNApolymerase. A synthetic derivative of rifamycin is:

Rifampicin is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is often used

against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It has a greater effect on the bacteria that causes tuberculosis

than most other antibiotics. It has replaced isoniazid as the front-line drug to treat tuberculosis, especially where isoniazid resistance is present. It is also used to meningitis, caused by Neisseriameningitidis. It can be taken orally.

Sulfonamides were introduced in 1935 by Domagk. He discovered that these chemicals could curemice with beta-hemolytic Streptococci infections. Sulfonamides are derived from the compoundsulfanilamide. They are effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae, beta-hemolytic streptococci, and E. coli. The sulfonamides are used in treatment for urinary tract infections caused by E. coli and in treatment ofmeningococcal meningitis. Some examples of sulfonamides are:

    Prontosil

    Gantrisin

    Trimethoprim

Isoniazid (INH) is primarily used in the treatment of tuberculosis. It works by inhibiting synthesis ofmycolic acid. It is usually given together with rifampicin. It prevents the growth of bacteria resistant torifampicin.

Paraaminosalicylic acid (PAS), is a chemotheraputic agent once used as the primary agent intuberculosis treatment. Paraaminosalicylic acid is an anti-folate. It is used only as a secondary anti-tuberculosis agent, having been replaced by ethambutol.

Ethambutol, a chemotheraputic agent used in the treatment of tuberculosis, works by inhibiting theincorporation of mycolic acids into the mycobacterial cell wall.

    Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; Community-

    acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA); Hospital-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA)

    Treatment:

Draining the skin sore is often the only treatment needed for a local skin MRSA infection. This can be done atthe doctor's office.

More serious MRSA infections, especially HA-MRSA infections, are becoming increasingly difficult to treat.Antibiotics that may still work include vancomycin (Vancocin, Vancoled), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole(Bactrim, Bactrim DS, Septra, Septra DS), linezolid (Zyvox), tetracycline (doxycycline), or clindamycin.

It is important to finish all doses of antibiotics you have been given, even if you feel better before the finaldose. Unfinished doses can lead to development of further drug resistance in the bacteria.

Other treatments may be needed for infections that are more serious. The person will be admitted to ahospital. Treatment may involve:

Fluids and medications through a vein

    Oxygen

Kidney dialysis (if kidney failure occurs)

OK so we see that MRSA is a form of Staph infection. But the normal antibiotitcs that kill Staph have noeffect IE the "cillins". This is because the cell wall has changed or mutated from over prescription ofthe cillins. Knowing your bug is the best way to kill it

Next natural antibiotics, do they work? Or not.

From a medical journal: TEA TREE OIL: THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE ANTIMICROBIAL HYPE Because ofincreasing resistance to antibiotics, interest in finding alternatives is strong. Tea tree oil (TTO) has beenwidely used in Australia for 80 years and is active against many micro-organisms.A pilot study of 30 MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) carriers comparing routine mupirocinnasal ointment and triclosan skin wash with TTO ointment and wash, showed one third were completelycleared by TTO but only 13% by conventional treatment. In another trial of TTO in the treatment of herpes cold sores, the oil was found to assist healing to a similar

degree as topical 5% acyclovir. The oil has about 100 components but 7 terpenes and their related alcoholsconstitute 80 to 90% of the whole oil. Several of these components have been shown to reduce levels ofStaphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Terpenes are lipophilic and partition into the phospholipid layerof cell membranes, disrupting normal structure and function. Allen, P., LANCET 2001, 358 (9289) 1245 or:Janssen AM et al, 1987. Antibiotics are a useful thing to have. They have saved millions of lives since the 1940's when penicillin wasdiscovered. Starting in the late 1950's antibiotics hit home hard. Every sniffle ache pain and doctors wouldprescribe something. With the starting of over prescription common bacteria started to mutate. So newer

and stronger antibiotics where made. This has been compounded by the rapid increase of resistance innormal bacteria.

This link is toa PDF document from August 2008 from the University of Fort Hare, Alice South Africa.Comparing essential oils to modern antibiotics. Overall the essential oils did as well and in some cases bettertha n their mosern counterparts.

This is lengthly but complete document. This is a must read for those that want to suplement modernantibiotics or for the time when they will not be here. It is important that only PURE and NATURAL oils beused. The "fake" oils are harmfull and could kill if ingested. I really got on this band wagon from my wife. She is a massage therapist and sells Oils. They are not cheap by a long shot but they do work

    Collidial Silver

    How CS Works:

    1) Catalytic OxidationSilver, in its atomic state, has the capacity to absorb oxygen and act as a catalyst to bring about oxidation.Atomic (nascent) oxygen absorbed onto the surface of silver ions in solution will readily react with thesulfhydryl (-S-H) groups surrounding the surface of bacteria or viruses to remove the hydrogen atoms (aswater), causing the sulfur atoms to form an R-S-S-R bond; blocking respiration and causing the bacteria toexpire. Employing a simple catalytic reduction/oxidation reaction, colloidal silver will react with any negativecharge presented by the organism's transport or membrane proteins and deactivate them.

    2) Reaction with Bacterial Cell MembranesThere is evidence that silver ions attach to membrane surface radicals of bacteria, impairing cell respirationand blocking its energy transfer system. One explanation is based on the nature of enzyme construction:Specific enzymes are required for a given biochemical activity to take place. Enzyme molecules usuallyrequire a specific metallic atom as part of the molecular matrix in order to function. A metal of higher valancecan replace a metal of lower valance in the enzyme complex, preventing the enzyme from functioning

normally. Silver, with a valance of plus 2, can replace many metals with a lower, or equal valance that exhibitweaker atomic bonding properties.3) Binding with DNAStudies by C.L. Fox and S.M. Modak with pseudomonas aeruginosa, a tenacious bacteria that is difficult totreat, demonstrated that as much as 12% of silver is taken up by the organism's DNA. While it remainsunclear exactly how the silver binds to the DNA without destroying the hydrogen bonds holding the lattice

together, it nevertheless prevents the DNA from unwinding, an essential step for cellular replication to occur.Since silver kills only bacteria that is anaerobic or nitrogen breathing, the friendly bacteria in the digestivetract are immune to it due to the fact that they are oxygen breathing, (aerobic). This is imporan to know.Silver does work on aerobic bacteria, just not as well as say on a Staphylococcus or Strepococcus aerobicbug. The way CS works on those bacteria is by starvation and cell wall weaking.

Essential Oils Found to Fight BacteriaDALLAS (Reuters Health) - A pair of orthopaedic surgeons report that two essential oils--eucalyptus and tea-tree oil--are surprisingly effective at treating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections.

Despite the positive findings, though, others say it is too soon to consider such oils an alternative toantibiotics.

The researchers presented their findings here at the 69th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of

    Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Eugene Sherry of the University of Sydney in Australia said that, applied to the skin of infected wounds anantibacterial wash derived from Eucalyptus radiata and Melaleuca alternifolia--better known as eucalyptusand tea-tree oil--can work when modern antibiotics fail.

Essential oils like these are mostly used in aromatherapy, Sherry noted.

He said that he used the combination "once a day for several months" in a series of 25 patients with MRSA.

"Twenty-two of the infections resolved completely," Sherry reported. In 19 patients, the infections resolvedwithout the use of antibiotics, while three patients required antibiotic treatment, he said.

Before Sherry applied the solution, he removed dead skin and infected tissue from the wound, a processcalled debridement. Sixteen of the infections involved the bone and three had spread to muscle.

In addition, 10 of the patients were diabetic, which "makes healing of wounds very difficult," Sherry said inan interview with Reuters Health.

Two years ago, Sherry attended a presentation about the antibacterial properties of essential oils and decidedto research the subject. He said that he discovered a wealth of 50-year-old research concerning essentialoils, but said "all that research was abandoned when modern science discovered antibiotics."

When Sherry decided to initiate a trial of eucalyptus and tea-tree oil in MRSA patients, he discovered that Dr.Patrick H. Warnke, an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Kiel in Germany, was pursuing a parallel study. So the two combined their work to produce the 25-patient MRSA study.

Warnke said they are now studying an aerosolized version of the compound in laboratory studies oftuberculosis. When they sprayed the compound on tuberculosis cultures "we wiped out TB, killed it, in 40minutes. No antibiotic does that," Warnke told Reuters Health.

Both doctors said that they have received no funding from the makers of the essential oils, nor do they have

financial interests in companies producing the substances.Dr. Harris Gellman, professor of medicine at the University of Miami and a spokesman for the AmericanAcademy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, said the new study is "interesting and exciting," but the treatment isnowhere near ready for prime time.

Gellman pointed out that although the results are positive, the authors have not provided enoughinformation. For example, he said, the information about the site of the infection, duration before theessential oils treatment, and comparison to a "control" group are all missing from the study.

The bottom line, Gellman said, is that "we don't know if these patients would have recovered irrespective oftreatment."

But even with those caveats, Gellman said he is pleased that orthopaedic surgeons are "finally going back" toevaluate traditional therapies for infection.

"Most medicinals come from plants," he noted, "so the natural progression is to look to more plants for moretreatments."

    List of Essential Oils

Essential oils are used extensively in aromatherapy and various traditional medicinal systems. Due to thenumerous health benefits of essential oils, they are being explored by the scientific community for treating avariety of diseases including cancer, HIV, asthma, bronchitis, heart strokes, etc.

There are more than 90 essential oils each having its own health benefits. Every essential oil blends well withmany other essential oils enabling herbalists prepare a number of aromatic preparations.
