DTX Fiber Test Kit

Introduction

The DTX Fiber Test Kit is two instruments: the DTX Fiber Optic Meter (DTX-FOM2) and the SimpliFiber Pro™ 850/1300 Source. These instruments let you use a DTX CableAnalyzer™ to measure optical power and insertion loss in fiber optic cabling.

The DTX-FOM2 is an optical power meter that you install in a DTX CableAnalyzer main unit to make optical power measurements at 850 nm, 1300 nm, 1310 nm, and 1550 nm.

The SimpliFiber Pro 850/1300 is an optical light source that uses LEDs. It supplies light at 850 nm and 1300 nm. To do tests at 1310 nm or 1550 nm wavelengths, use the optional SimpliFiber Pro 1310/1550 laser source.

DTX Fiber Test Kit Features

The DTX Fiber Test Kit (the DTX-FTK) lets you do these tasks:

• Lets you make sure that cabling is correctly installed. You can make loss measurements that the tester can compare with a user-defined standard.

• Helps you do troubleshooting procedures on fiber optic devices. You can measure the power from an optical source and compare the measurement against the specifications.

• Lets you save and organize test records in internal memory or on a Secure Digital Multimedia Card (SD MMC).

• Lets you manage test results on a PC and make printed reports (using the LinkWare software supplied).

How to Clean Fiber Adapters

At intervals, clean all fiber adapters with a swab and fiber optic solvent. Use a dry swab to remove the solvent from the adapter.

How to Clean Connector Ends

1 Touch the tip of an optical-grade solvent pen or swab soaked in solvent to a dry, optical-grade wiper.

2 Rub the connector endface across the solvent on the wiper, then rub it two times across the dry area of the wiper.

Note

A different procedure is necessary to clean some connector styles (for example, VF-45).

Always put protective caps on connectors you do no use. At intervals, clean the caps with a swab or wipers and fiber optic solvent.

How to Test Your Test Reference Cords

Do a test on your test reference cords each time you start to use them. To do this, use a test reference cord that you know is good to set a reference and do an Autotest on each cord. For instructions, see Appendix A.

If you must replace your test reference cords, select replacements that have these properties:

• They meet the requirements of ISO/IEC 14763-3.

• Core and cladding dimensions: the same dimensions as the optical fiber in the link under test

• Connector polish: PC or UPC. Use APC only for tests on cabling with APC connectors.

• Test reference cord length: maximum 5 m

To get the best performance from your testers, get replacement cords from Fluke Networks.

Why It Is Important to Use Mandrels with an LED Source

Fluke Networks recommends that you use mandrels when you use an LED source to set the reference and do tests.

The mandrels are mode filters. They remove the unwanted, high-order modes that are emitted from LED sources.

The high-order modes do not move in straight lines through the fiber. Because they move on a longer path, their power decreases more than the power of other modes. If you do not use a mandrel, the power from high-order modes is included in the reference value because the test reference cord is short. But when you do a test on a fiber, your loss measurements will be unusually high because of the loss of the high-order modes.

Also, changes in the position of the fiber increase the loss of high-order modes more than other modes. This can cause larger changes in measurement results when you do a test again on the same fiber.

When you use a mandrel to remove the high-order modes, your test results are more reliable and consistent.

Fluke Networks supplies mandrels that comply with ANSI/TIA-568-C standards. The mandrels are for 3 mm test reference cords. Table 2 gives some information about mandrel requirements for TIA standards.

Figure 7 shows how to wrap the fiber around a mandrel.

Put the mandrels on the fiber near the source, as Figures 7 and 8 show. When you set the reference, the DTX tester shows a diagram with loop where you put the mandrel.

About the Reference

Accurate measurements of optical power and signal loss are necessary when you install and do the maintenance on fiber optic cabling. To make accurate measurements, you first must set the reference.

The reference is the baseline level of power for insertion loss measurements. When you set the reference frequently, small changes in the source power and the quality of the connections have a much smaller effect on measurements.

Reference values will not change by more than a few tenths of a dB each time you set the reference if your connections and test reference cords are good. If you see larger changes, it can mean that there is a problem with the cords or connections. To do a test on your test reference cords, see Appendix A.

For the most reliable test results, set the reference at these times:

• At the start of each day

• When you start to use a different SimpliFiber Source

• When you connect a test reference cord to the source

• When the tester gives a warning that the reference value is too old

• When you see a negative loss measurement

When you change the Test Method (page 14) the DTX tester will not let you do a test until you set the reference.

Appendix A: How to Make Sure that Test Reference Cords are Good

Before you start to do tests, always make sure that your test reference cords are good. This appendix shows how to do a test on a test reference cords. You can also do the test on other patch cords that you think are defective.

To do a test on a test reference cord or a patch cord:

1 Get a test reference cord that you know is good.

2 Clean both ends of the test reference cord and the cord you will do a test on. See "How to Clean Connectors and Adapters" on page 7 for instructions.

Set the reference. See "How to Set the Reference" on page 18 for instructions.

3 Connect a test reference cord or patch cord for the test. See Figure 16.

4 On the tester, turn the rotary switch to AUTOTEST. Then, press P.

5 Look at the results and make sure that the loss measurement is no more than these limits:

• Multimode cord, 850 nm: 0.11 dB

• Multimode cord, 1300 nm: 0.10 dB

• Singlemode cord, 1310 nm and 1550 nm: 0.20 dB

If loss is higher than this value, clean the ends of the cord and do the test again. If the loss is too high again, the cord is defective. Replace the cord.
