Dean’s Message

I have been on Faculty now for 12 months, braved a Manitoba winter, loved the cool summer and marvelled at the rapidity of fall! I have appreciated the recepti on I have received as a new Dean by the faculty, support services staff and the community at large. I have developed many connecti ons because Manitobans believe in bringing all concerned to the table at one ti me.

I have been supported by Associate Deans Maureen Heaman (Research), Judith Scanlan (Graduate), and Christi ne Ateah (Undergraduate). In additi on the Coordinators have played a signifi cant role in program management and identi fi cati on of opportunity: Sandy Gessler (BPRN/Placement); Sandy Kluka (BN); Nicole Harder (Learning Labs); Ruth Dean (Internati onal Aff airs) and Karen Dempsey (Student Services). I have excellent administrati ve support through Lai Chun Yee, Marni Laurencelle and Jackie Dewar and all of the administrati ve staff .

In the past year much has happened for which the Faculty of Nursing can be very proud. Our partnerships with RRC and UCN remain strong and the relati onship with Norway House is being re-examined. We have worked with the Faculty of Medicine around the Physician Assistant and NP programs. We are exploring an alliance in oral-systemic health with Denti stry.

Faculty members (Fiona Jensen, Penny Davis, and Christi ne Ateah) provided leadership in the Interprofessional Collaborati ve Educati on Projects and have presented numerous ti mes. We look for their leadership as IPE moves into the next phase.

Our students were successful in mounti ng and executi ng the Nati onal CNSA conference for Canada. The conference programming was fl awless. Sarah Painter became the CNSA president for Canada!

Several of our faculty were recognized nati onally in the Canadian Nurses Associati on Centennial Awards. Jo-Ann Sawatsky was recognized by her peers with the Cardiovascular Nursing Research Excellence Award. Maureen Heaman was selected for a Chair in Gender and Health. It has indeed been a wonderful year.

The Manitoba Nursing Research Insti tute was awarded a three-year funding conti nuance and a new and more expansive focus initi ated a name change to the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research. The Advisory Board is meeti ng and professional affi liati ons with other agencies will soon begin.

The revised Graduate Master’s Program is in the process of review with an anti cipated start date of fall 2009. We conti nue in our partnerships within interdisciplinary graduate programs.

We are working toward a new and futuristi c Mission and Vision statement to guide programs and curriculum revision.

In this report you will see the scope of contributi ons our faculty members make in educati on, research, service and administrati on. I want to thank each and every one for making our Faculty of Nursing stand out on the local, provincial, nati onal and internati onal scene.

HIGHLIGHTS

Open House and Atrium Dedicati on

On May 13, 2008, the Faculty held its second annual Open House in celebrati on of Nati onal Nursing Week. As part of this year’s event, the Faculty also held a Donor Appreciati on Luncheon. Also included was the offi cial ribbon-cutti ng for the new simulati on learning centres.

The Faculty was also proud to unveil the plague dedicati ng the atrium to Mary Kathleen Ruane, a nurse who had bequeathed part of her estate to the Faculty. Ms Ruane’s total bequest of $450,000 will also establish an endowment fund to support Nursing students’ academic and research objecti ves. These include two research grants for graduate students, two scholarships for graduate students, four scholarships for undergraduate students, and four bursaries for undergraduate students.

Canadian Nursing Student Associati on Nati onal Conference

In January, 2008, the Faculty’s Nursing Student Associati on played host to over 400 nursing students from across Canada at the CNSA Nati onal Conference. The conference theme of Spirited Nursing provided att endees the opportunity to examine the holisti c side of the profession. With speakers from as far away as Europe and Japan, the Conference speakers and workshops covered topics ranging from balance and hope within the profession, how nurses can become the shapers and leaders of Canada’s health and social agendas, web-based technology in palliati ve care, and holisti c nursing and healing disconnect between mind and body.

Nightmare/Nightcare

The 3rd annual Nightmare/Nightcare event in the “Helen Glass Hospital for Sick Students” was held on Friday, February 1. This overnight event was a huge success that included 28 volunteer nursing students. Twenty students played the role as “pati ent” and 8 students were the nurses who came in for a night shift . Each “pati ent” had a problem that required them to be in the hospital and the nurses had to care for a pati ent load. The purpose of the experience was to allow the “pati ents” to have a bett er appreciati on of what their real pati ents may experience, as

well as allow the “nurses” a bit of a glimpse of what a night shift might be like as a nurse. The visiti ng hours were well att ended and saw friends, family and nursing faculty come in to visit.

Dr. H. Glass Researcher in Residence

The Faculty of Nursing was pleased to host Dr. Alba DiCenso from McMaster University as this year’s Dr. Helen Glass Researcher in Residence from April 1 through April 4. A professor in the School of Nursing at McMaster University, a CHSRF/CIHR Chair in Advanced Practi ce Nursing, and the Director of the Ontario Training Centre in Health Services and Policy Research, Dr. DiCenso is also well-known as an expert in Evidence-Based Nursing Practi ce and is the author/editor of a textbook on the topic which is familiar to us all. In her lecture to the Faculty, enti tled “Translati ng evidence into practi ce”, she talked about creati ng the environment that supports the incorporati on of research fi ndings into practi ce. She described changing practi ce in an organizati on – frameworks and approaches. The public lecture, held at the Inn at the Forks and att ended by over 50 parti cipants, was “Successful integrati on of advanced practi ce nurses into the Canadian health care system: Is it possible?”. She passionately presented an overview of the challenges and successes in integrati ng and making full use of Nurse Practi ti oners and Clinical Nurse Specialists in today’s health care system. Dr. DiCenso also met with faculty, graduate students, community health care providers and interest groups in small group discussions, demonstrati ons, and consultati ons around a variety of topics of mutual interest.

Homecoming 2007

The class of ‘77 and ‘97 held their 30th and 10th reunion in September of 2007. Members of the class were given a tour of the Faculty and had the opportunity to meet the Dean at a recepti on sponsored by the Faculty.

The University also held an Open House as part of Homecoming. Nursing undergraduate students were on hand to answer questi ons at the display table and to take blood pressure. Visitors were also given a tour of the faciliti es at the Faculty.

Annual Golf Tournament

The Faculty’s 5th Annual Golf Tournament was held September 26, 2007 at the Southside Golf Course. A total of 24 parti cipants, making up 6 groups of 4 players each, played nine holes of Texas scramble-best ball of golf.

LEARNING

Simulated Learning

The new Simulated Clinical Learning Centre and Simulated Community Learning Environment was opened for classes in September 2007. Located on the 4th fl oor of the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing, the Learning Centres provide nursing students and clinical faculty with a new opportunity that combine traditi onal teaching methods with educati on technology.

Simulati on allows instructors to teach multi ple objecti ves at once, bringing learning alive in a multi dimensional environment. It increases learner confi dence, which leads to competence. At the Faculty of Nursing, clinical faculty and students have the opportunity

to use the simulati on resource as an adjunct experience during their clinical rotati on.

The simulati on experience consists of going through a well-developed evidence-based scenario with the clinical group. An important part of the simulati on experience is debriefi ng. As a simulated clinical experience can be emoti onally stressful, educators must take the ti me to debrief about what has occurred. The debriefi ng session is incorporated into the simulati on itself, and takes place aft er in a seminar room away from the simulati on. The centre is currently being used for clinical courses in the following areas: labour and delivery, adult and pediatric surgery and medicine, as well as an insti tuti on-based geriatric scenario.

In additi on, instructors Nicole Harder and Carol Enns have created a DVD and manual ti tled How to facilitate a successful simulati on: Providing resources for Clinical Educati on Facilitators. This project was made possible through funding received from the Faculty of Nursing Endowment Fund. There has been interest from other universiti es to purchase the DVD and manual. Nicole and Carol are working with the Technology Transfer Offi ce to secure copyright protecti on and will then be looking at how to potenti ally market their product.

First Internati onal Study Tour

In the spring of 2008, twelve nursing students and two faculty members, Christi ne Ateah and Ruth Dean, travelled to Chengdu, China on the very fi rst internati onal study tour organized by the Faculty of Nursing. The study tour was a component of the course NURS3340 Providing Care in a Culturally Diverse Society.

Prior to leaving for China, the students were immersed in three full days of classes led by instructors Marilyn Seguire, Barb Goodwin, and Cossett e Taylor-Mendes. The sessions focussed on transcultural nursing, cultural competence and cultural safety.

While in Chengdu, the group lived in the Internati onal Residence at the Sichuan University campus, where the students were within walking distance of the 5000-bed West China University Hospital complex where

they were paired up with Chinese nursing students in their last year of school and assigned to diff erent wards of the hospital. The group also had the opportunity The group also had the opportunity to learn about Chinese Traditi onal Medicine, and to bett er understand its use in conjuncti on with western style medicine.

This was a sati sfying, exciti ng, and enriching experience for all. Students reported that they learned more than they had ever imagined about themselves, about living and nursing in another culture, and about the importance of cultural competence. Plans are underway to welcome Chinese students to UM in 2009, with a return visit from UM in 2010.
