In the heart of the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains, the Elk Valley is a hidden oasis of verdant landscapes, charming towns and abundant recreation. For over 100 years, pioneers have travelled to the region, first in search of valuable minerals, and now seeking a sanctuary focused on family, community and the beautiful outdoors. Mining still forms the base of a thriving economy that has now diversified and welcomes a variety of artisans, small businesses, and an active year-round recreational and cultural tourism industry.

FERNIE is the largest and oldest of the 3 main communities in the Elk Valley. A town rich in heritage, award-winning architecture, and spectacular scenery, Fernie charms and delights all ages. Whether strolling century-old Historic Downtown, exploring the unique geography, visiting artists and artisans or revelling in the packed cultural calendar, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Pop: 5,249 | Founded 1898 Incorporated 1904

SPARWOOD lies in the middle of the valley and is the first community reached on entering from Alberta. The town’s name is derived from the local trees that were used for manufacturing spars for ocean vessels. The town was founded as a new home for the residents of the temporary communities of Michel and Natal. Several art murals can be seen here, depicting the strong connection to coal mining, with some by Michelle Loughery who was born in the area and went on to become a world-renowned muralist.

Pop: 3,784 | Founded 1966

At the head of the valley is ELKFORD, a small town with a passionate arts community. Writing, painting, photography, and pottery are among the popular endeavours, and well-known glass artist Katherine Russell has a working studio here. Elkford is the gateway to the Elk Lakes Provincial Park, a remote protected area bordering Alberta’s Kananaskis Country.

The energy of Shred Kelly’s music is firmly tied to Fernie’s landscape and small town spirit. Since the skibum bar days of 2009, the band have distilled the grand scale of the surrounding Rocky Mountains into resounding anthems of play hard, work hard, and never give up.

Hailed as ‘stoke folk,’ Shred Kelly easily bring crowds to their feet, building energy at venues and festivals across the country and at international appearances including Australia and Germany. From early banjo-fuelled outlaw tunes like Ghost inside My Head and Fish (Goodbye July, 2010) to the haunting melody of Rowed Away (In the Hills, 2012) to the feel-good Sing to the Night (Sing to the Night, 2015), the band have kept their fans close and their secrets closer. They sing of cabin life and the strings that bind hearts and minds, regardless of time and distance.

Archipelago, 2018, is a coming-of-age album, a collaborative effort built on a decade of experience. More layered and focused, it has a new maturity without losing any of the band’s signature energy. Rhythms of the road and ocean

are interwoven into the starry skies and mountain peaks of past work for a depth and clarity that only hints at how far this group can go.

Collected accolades – including a Western Canadian Music Award, CBC recognition and 5 Kootenay Music Awards– point to popular appreciation that will only grow with the years. Following a 13-date European Tour in Spring 2018, Shred Kelly will be back in Canada to hit the festival circuit. Along with Wintersleep and Elliot Brood they return home to headline at Wapiti Music Festival in Fernie’s Annex Park on August 10-11. Shred Kelly are Tim Newton, Sage McBride, Jordan Vlasschaert and Ty West.

bACkROADS bC IN THE GALLERY JUNE 15 – SEPTEMBER 16, 2018

Explore the backroads and wild places of British Columbia with artist Michael Hepher in his visual record of a summer family roadtrip. As wildfires impacted much of BC in the summer of 2017, Hepher and his wife and two children spent 7 weeks in their 1971 yellow Volkswagen van, Truman, camping, exploring, and touring from Fernie to Vancouver Island and north to Terrace. For much of their trip, Hepher’s mother joined the family in her own camper, Hyacinth. Together they played music, hiked, enjoyed laketime and relaxed into the simpler way of life where little matters except the rhythm of the road.

The exhibit of 30 original oil paintings along with mementos, photographs, diaries, and family recollections will open on June 15 with an free evening reception. Throughout the duration of the exhibition, special events allow visitors a chance to meet the artist and understand the process from inspiration, to journey, to creative expression, to finished exhibit. As World War I was drawing to a close Elk Valley residents were eager to build for the future. The spectacular surroundings provided much inspiration to locals, and photographer JF Spalding was actively documenting and promoting the valley as a tourist destination in the early 1900’s. Inspiration led to many recreational pursuits including the Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Company providing land in 1918 for a golf course at the current site of Prentice Park. The same year also brought forth the Michel-Natal Rod and Gun Club and the first women’s hockey team.

The Superintendent of the Crow’s Nest Coal Company was so keen to see the course built, he provided part of the funding himself to supplement other donations and membership fees. Volunteers cleared the land and started with just a few holes, but by 1921, a further 9 holes were added. The club was renamed the Fernie Golf & Country Club when it combined with the local tennis club in 1928. In 2018, the club has once again reverted to the original name of Fernie Golf Club.

The original greens were a mix of sand, oil and sawdust and a greenskeeper was employed at a rate of $100 per year plus accommodation in the clubhouse. Grass greens were first laid in 1968 but it wasn’t until 1986 that the club finally achieved 18 holes, the current clubhouse and support buildings followed shortly after.

To celebrate this important landmark centenary, the Fernie Golf Club will hold celebrations July 3 - 7. Events begin with a Ladies Tournament on Tuesday, a Mens Tournament on Wednesday, and the Tony Servello Senior Open on Thursday. On Saturday, a full day of festivities is planned including Golf Games, hosts in historical dress, displays charting the Club’s progress and development, and a BBQ dinner with legacy awards.

Learning of a sense of isolation of her community’s elderly while meeting local citizens, school teacher Yvonne Prest formulated a plan to introduce her Grade 11 (2017) students to the residents of Lilac Terrace in Sparwood. Through a series of interviews and social sessions over cookies and games, the teens and seniors found a common bond. Prest says the meetings were invaluable in bringing to life the hardships and challenges faced by young immigrants escaping war-torn Europe over half a century ago. By sharing these first-hand stories with her English class, the seniors shared not only their own lives, but the foundations of the pioneering communities of the Elk Valley.

Untold Stories of Sparwood is a truly collaborative effort spanning generations. The piece was typeset and prepared by Randal Macnair of Oolichan Books and features original portraits photographs by Kyle Hamilton and a cover image by Mike Cotton, and is available in paperback for $15 from

the Sparwood Library. This year’s Year 11 students are working on Volume II of the initiative. The result will be a 2019 calendar featuring original poetry and photographs and will be available for purchase from June, 2018.

Inspired by the upcoming 50th anniversary of Elkford in 2021, the Living History Project is recording oral histories and collecting artifacts to mark this important milestone. When the local Heritage Association disbanded several years ago, they left only a small collection of boxes of records and objects by which to mark the small town’s history. Recognizing that much of the history was still available through residents’ memories, the Living History Project was established to record and memorialize voices, personalities, and stories.

The Living History Project is presented on a series of digital tablets with complimentary artifact displays. View the collection at the Elkford Visitor Centre Monday to Saturday, 9am-5pm.

Step outside this summer and explore a wild world of nature – the unique flora and fauna of the Elk Valley is right outside your door waiting to be discovered. From the cool, clear waters of the remote Elk Lakes north of Elkford, along the meandering Elk River and up to the highest peaks of the encircling Rocky Mountains, every part of this valley is connected through the spectacular diversity of species that make their home here.

Inspired by the simple beauty she sees at every turn, Lee-Anne Walker has made it her life’s work to understand the biodiversity of our region. Fuelled by a passion to protect natural environments, she shares her comprehensive knowledge through ongoing work with the Elk River Alliance and Wildsight Elk Valley Branch through a series of winter snowshoe tours and summer interpretive workshops.

Since 1981, Walker has worked as an interpretive naturalist and holds

a Degree in Heritage Interpretation and Masters in Environment and Management. She has been a natural history instructor with the College of the Rockies’ Mountain Adventure Skills Training (MAST) program for the past 22 years and started Wildsight’s Education in the Wild program in 2001, sharing the wonder of the outdoors with over 70,000 youth to date. Pondering questions and searching collectively for answers she maintains an enthusiastic outlook, leaning away from rote lists of facts and data and instead looking deeper for identifying patterns and relationships in nature on her tours.

“It’s as simple as getting outside and playing in the wild.” she says. “Just by being ‘out there’ every explorer finds the spark that ignites their passion, and this hopefully stirs people to want to protect what they see and experience.”

In all her work she seeks to inspire others to leave their environment

FEATURED INTERPRETIVE NATURALIST

LEE-ANNE WALKER CONNECTING PEOPLE TO NATURE

a better place and find a personal connection with the living world.

This summer, join Walker and other naturalist interpreters on a Wildsight Wild Nature Workshop and discover your special connection to our unique ecology. In Fungus Among Us on May 30, learn about the all-encompassing threads that connect different species to fungus, and how ecosystem health and our wellbeing depend on this intricate relationship. In the Watershed Tour on September 29, explore the streams and rivers that make up the Elk Valley watershed, and learn where our water comes from, how we use it and practical ways we can care for it. In all workshops, hear about the large mammals that migrate through our valley, amphibians and insects that make their homes here and the incredible birdlife that thrives in our short summer seasons. Watch for beavers at work and majestic blue herons probing along the river’s edge; indicators of thriving riparian ecology.

Also this summer, pick up two local mini-guides to help you interpret local wildlife and nature on your own self-guided tours. One will focus on local birding and wildlife and will provide wildlife viewing locations and species to look for. Another will feature the Elk River Alliance Geocaches – 14 stations spanning the 220km length of the Elk River from the Elk Lakes to Lake Koocanusa, each featuring an engaging challenge and information on the local watershed.

As if alighting from an arriving train, begin a walking tour of Fernie at the former CPR Station, 501 1st Avenue, now the Fernie Arts Station. This tour visits 12 of Fernie’s most iconic Historic Downtown buildings and features a variety of architectural styles and photo opportunities. Beautiful deep gold and rose-tinted brick and sandstone buildings line 2nd Avenue and are unique to Fernie. Look for evidence of the 1908 fire in the form of soot and smoke residue on the brickwork.

A DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR OF FERNIE

CPR STATION601 1st Avenue | Now in use as The Arts Station

As use of the automobile grew, rail travel declined and so did use of this Second-Class station that had once been the centre of activity in Fernie. Although passenger services were discontinued in 1964, the train tracks are still in daily use carrying the freight trains that regularly pass through the Elk Valley. Since 1987, the Fernie &

District Arts Council has used this facility as a performing and fine arts venue. Dine trackside at the Blue Toque Café and imagine yourself arriving on the platform for the first time 100 years ago! See P28 for more.

2 HOW FOON’S LAUNDRY491 1st Avenue | Now in use as Fernie Elks Lodge

The Chinese entrepreneur How Foon established several businesses in this building constructed in 1908. He ran a café, laundry and shoemaking shop on the main floor and rented apartments upstairs. The Fernie Elks Club purchased the building and removed the dividing walls to open the interior for use as a hall. The exterior surface, though, retains its original outline and the original advertising mural for ‘Royal Crown Soap.’ Across 5th street at The 1909 Royal Hotel, note the tops of the filled-in windows along the base of the building indicating that the street was once lower than it is today.

3 THE HOME bANk491 2nd Avenue | Now in use as The Fernie Museum

This highly decorative building was constructed in 1910 to house a branch of the Home Bank on the main floor and the Herchmer-Mitchel Law Office on the second floor. Except for the paint, the exterior is in its original configuration making this a significant heritage building. The failure of the Home Bank in 1923 cost Fernie depositors $800,000 and led to a re-writing of Canada’s banking laws. These new rules prevented the widespread bank failures in the 1930s.

4 THE IMPERIAL bANk 1909401 2nd Ave | Now in use as The Brickhouse Bar & Grill

On August 1, 1908, on the corner of 2nd Ave and 4th St, the members of the Fernie Fire Department made their last stand in the fight of the catastrophic fire that would consume Fernie in just 90 minutes. The Imperial Bank of Canada built a new bank here in 1909, using a standard small city branch design. The company merged with the Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1961 and closed the branch in 1963.  Although some features have been altered, the brick and sandstone exterior retains many of its striking original features. Step inside for a taste of today; the Brickhouse serves up a large selection of Fernie Brewing Company Beers, BC wines and a tasty pub menu. The original bank vault is still in use as the chef’s pantry.

5 THE COURT HOUSE401 4th Ave | Now in use as Fernie’s Government of BC Offices

Built between 1909-1911 and lauded as one of BC’s best buildings, the Court House is a spectacular chateau-style building rarely found in the area. The majestic courtroom with stained glass windows is still in use today. Enjoy the grounds and beautiful views.

6 HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC CHURCH 521 4th Avenue

The history of the church dates back to the beginning of Fernie when Father J. Welsh was sent from Cranbrook to hold masses for approximately 200 miners in 1898. Some of these miners donated one day’s wages every month towards the construction of a place of worship and volunteer parishioners completed this church in 1912. It was and still is home to Fernie’s largest congregation.

7 THE CROW’S NEST PASS COAL CO. OFFICES 501 3rd Avenue Now in use as City Hall

In 1905, the Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Co. constructed this building as the head office to manage its expanding coal mining operations. It also housed the offices of the Crow’s Nest Pass Electric Co. and the Morrissey-Fernie-Michel Railway, subsidiaries of the coal company. Constructed in cement blocks, the building survived the 1908 Great Fire and served as a place of refuge during and after the fire. It has served as Fernie’s City Hall since 1984. Located on the grounds, the Miner’s Walk is a fascinating glimpse into Fernie’s coal mining heritage with interpretive panels, sculptures, ironwork art, benches and more.

8 THE FERNIE POST OFFICE AND CUSTOMS OFFICE 492 3rd Avenue | Now in use as the Fernie Heritage Library

This imposing Romanesque Revival building reflects Fernie’s importance as a government centre for the region; the engraved stone signs above the entrance to the Post Office and Customs Office are still in place. The building, for a time, served as the US consul office for the region. Built in 1907, the building was gutted but not destroyed in the 1908 Great Fire. An exhibit on the 1908 Great Fire is located on the landing of the main staircase. See P12 for more.

9 SALVATION ARMY 260 5th Street | Now in use as Eye of the Needle Studio

In 1904, William Eschwig of the Northern Hotel made a trade in which he secured the Salvation Army this site in exchange for the Victoria Avenue location, where they had been operating since November 3, 1900. The original building was lost in the 1908 Fire. The replacement building, seen here, was the Salvation Army’s

home until 2001 when they moved to their current location on Victoria Avenue. Step inside and discover a working felting studio, beautiful antiques, and unique artisan crafts including Katherine Russel glasswork and ironwork from the Fernie Forge. The Fernie Meat Market next door has antique tins and some of the best jerky in the Kootenays.

10 ISIS THEATRE 531 2nd Avenue | Now in use as Nevados

In 1910, Wm. Eschwig began construction of the building next to his Northern Hotel. Known initially as Eschwing’s Hall, it was remodeled and opened as the Isis Theatre in 1911. The theatre was again remodeled in 1930 and reopened as the Orpheum Theatre. Moving pictures entertained Fernie residents here until 1949 when the Orpheum was bought by Sam Rossell, proprietor of the Vogue Theatre. At that time, it was agreed there was not enough business for two theatres and the Orpheum closed. The Orpheum is fondly remembered by Fernie oldtimers as the site of Saturday afternoon entertainment.

11 FERNIE CARTAGE COMPANY701 2nd Avenue | Now in use as Urban Settler and private residences

Unlike many businesses in Fernie’s Historic Downtown, the Fernie Cartage Company rebuilt its livery using rubblestone from the banks of the Elk River, rather than brick, following the 1908 Great Fire, making it unique in downtown Fernie. For many years before automobiles were commonly used, the company delivered milk, coal, and other goods with a fleet of horse-drawn drays. In the 1920s, it was “The Up-To-Date Garage,” servicing a number of makes of early automobiles, and owned by prominent Italian entrepreneur, Al Rizzuto.

12 FERNIE SECONDARY SCHOOL 901 2nd Ave | Now in use as 901 Fernie & Spa 901

The Fernie Secondary School operated here for 89 years from 1909–1998. Early photographs show that the original façade looked much as it does today, however it was covered with stucco from 1978 until the time of the renovations in 2006. It was then that Parastone developed the site; revitalizing the original school and gymnasium and adding 2 new condominium buildings. Inside, the 16ft ceilings, craftsman finishes, and granite fittings make this one of Fernie’s most sought after properties, while the award-winning 6,600sq ft Spa 901 offers the ultimate in urban relaxation.

After the tour, stroll down 2nd Avenue to enjoy local shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants, pubs and attractions.

FEATURE BUSINESS

FERNIE DISTILLERS In Historic Downtown Fernie, the local food and beverage industry is expanding with the opening of Fernie Distillers in spring 2018.

Although this is a brand new start up, the company has strong legs. Co-owner Jillian Rutherford will be taking the production lead and has put her Engineering degree and experience in the O&G industry to good use, selecting and installing the distilling equipment with a meticulous eye. For two years she has honed her skills, taking courses and building experience and relationships with distilleries throughout BC. She plans to start simple with ‘No. 9 Mine’ vodka, made with local organic Bishop wheat from Creston and Fernie water, purified using reverse osmosis. Other products including a ‘Fernie Fog’ liqueur and ‘Prospector Gin’ will soon follow, also focusing on local produce when possible to build the flavour profiles. The company’s branding was created by Lisa Holst of Fernie-based My Friend Pike.

A bright and airy tasting room will offer retail sales, tastings, and cocktails in the lounge 3 evenings a week. The sunny garden patio will be a popular spot in the warmer months. The tasting room is a work of art in itself, with shelving and a custom bar-top made from reclaimed wood and accents including an original leather panel from the Legion next door and a bar-front made from a brewery bottle conveyor belt.

Seeking a lifestyle that reflected their passions, Jillian and husband Andrew (who will advise on business development and sales), along with their two kids and 4 year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Crush, have found their home in Fernie. They celebrate 1 year living in the mountains in June, after visiting for 20 years to enjoy the year-round activities and social scene.

The Arts Station Where Art, Culture & History Converge

A vibrant and engaging space for the creative community in Fernie featuring all disciplines of the arts for visitors and locals alike. The Arts Station has a varied program of entertainment and activities throughout the year including live concerts, film screenings, pottery workshops, community theatre, gallery shows, and creative classes for all ages.

LIVING HISTORY IN A HERITAGE bUILDINGFrom 1898 to 1964, the Canadian Pacific Railway station was the economic and social hub of the community. The current station building was completed in the spring of 1909 after an earlier incarnation burned down in the Great Fire of 1908. The CPR donated the disused building to the City of Fernie and in 1987 the Fernie Arts Council began the four-year process of moving the building onto a new foundation and completely renovating the dilapidated structure. The former waiting room became the foyer gallery and every other space found new life as studios, event space, and even a restaurant. The Arts Station opened in 1990 as an indispensable base for artists in the Elk Valley.

PUbLIC ART

This spring, the grounds of the Arts Station will see a new feature in the form of a dramatic sculpture commemorating the 1908 Fire. A Hardy Town is a collaborative effort from Michael Hepher of Clawhammer Press and metalwork artist Paul Reimer. Although the devastating fire of August 1908 razed the town in just 90 minutes, no lives were lost. The artwork reflects the impact the fire had on Fernie’s architecture and the City ordinance that followed, directing all future construction to be of fireproof material. This commemorative sculpture is a testament to the tenacity of the people of Fernie who rose up through the ashes to rebuild and endure.

Art comes in many forms and suspended art brings added dimension. Collaborating through a shared love of three dimensional art, Brina Schenk and Michelle Galway formed Annex Suspended in 2017. The pieces they create favour organic themes and geometric shapes, a mix of materials and a light touch. Through simple combinations of subjects, textures, and arrangements, they hint at stories of family, nature, and worlds beyond imagination.

Brina Schenk has a background in illustration and graphic design, evident in her confident use of line, colour and negative space to add weight and texture. Her story ‘The Traveller’ was featured at the 2017 Wapiti Music Festival and played out through a series of original paintings. Michelle Galway has studied, among other things, horticulture and textiles, and has a skilled approach to woodworking. She produces the sewn and felted pieces in the collection, often favouring the animal kingdom – whales, bighorn

sheep and birds have featured in past works.

Having first collaborated on a project for the Fernie Lantern Festival, the pair continue to draw on the diversity of their local environment for inspiration. With 4 young children between them they also have an endless source of wonder through the unlimited imaginations of young minds. Their mobiles often feature local cedar, local aquatic life such as bull trout, bicycles and space themes. They recently joined forces with Wild Wolves Design to add laser cut hangers to their work. In addition, Brina creates paintings to hang with the pieces – by combining two pieces, the story develops as it catches the breeze and pulls influence from its surroundings. The creations are a unique and inspired look at family life in the Rocky Mountains.

Find Annex Suspended online or watch for them at local craft fairs.

The distinctive façade of the Livery Building sits on the northern boundary of Fernie’s heritage commercial district at 701 2nd Avenue. In 1907, Alex Rizzuto and J. Crawford purchased the Fernie Livery, Dray and Transfer Company from William Handley and set about modernizing and expanding the business. The partners suffered a huge set-back when the wooden structure was razed in the fire that swept through downtown Fernie in 1908, but with $3,000 in insurance money (half of what they had claimed), they began to rebuild. Following the town’s new directive to build in fireproof materials, the current two-storey facility was erected with rubblestone from the nearby Elk River. Structurally, it has changed very little in its 110-year history.

The Fernie Livery, Dray and Transfer Company utilized a fleet of horse-drawn drays to deliver milk, coal, feed and other goods in Fernie for many years. Stump-pulling, lot clearing, and sales of ice in summer were also among the many services offered. With the arrival of automobiles in the Elk Valley, the business was proudly advertised

as “The Up-To-Date Garage” for servicing vehicles, and briefly served as a Chrysler dealership in 1925.

In 1926, the garage closed and the building became the home of the Scott Fruit Company. In September 1933, the Fernie Cartage Company moved in on the main floor and operated out of this location until 1979. Over the past 40 years, the Livery building has housed an antiques store, two restaurants (The Wood and The Livery) Grow Children’s Store and is now home to the Urban Settler retail space (the second furniture store to feature here) and a private apartment. The ground floor was also the popular Eldorado nightclub for many years.

GHOST TOWN OF COAL CREEKThe Coal Creek Heritage Trail is an easy to moderate seven kilometer trail that begins at the gazebo by the Fernie Aquatic Centre. The trail follows an abandoned railway line and road grade to the ghost town of Coal Creek, a once bustling mining community of up to 1,000 residents from 1898 until 1958.

Walk, jog or mountain bike this trail and enjoy the splendor of nature while discovering the rich heritage of the area. All that remains of the town site are ruins to explore, as many of the buildings were either burned down in a fire or moved to Fernie after the Coal Creek mine shut down. For the full story visit the Fernie Museum.
