FINAL EDITION

WELCOME TO THE FENLANDERS 25TH EAST OF ENGLAND RALLY

2

I for one cannot believe another year has passed

and after twelve months of planning, we would like

to welcome friends old and new to our 25th

anniversary event.

We have a fantastic line up of entertainment, live

music, superb ride outs and lots of fun, and if that

wasn’t enough, we are delighted to also welcome our traders, food

stalls and of course our dealer Newmarket & Norwich Harley -

Davidson who have supported our Chapter and our Rally.

This is our biggest budget rally to date and with your fantastic

support and patronage we will reinvest to put on an even better

show next year! A huge thank you to my Chapter officers and all

the volunteers from the Fenlanders too, without who's invaluable

support this event would not be possible.

As a H.O.G. event coordinator and Chapter Director it is my

pleasure to invite you all to get the party started, roll up to the bar,

grab some refreshment and relax into the rally. If you see me come

and say hello, I’d love to hear about your Rally experience.

And remember – we are a H.O.G. Flag event, with

an award for best Chapter attendance!

Neil Billig, Chapter Director

Nor th Nor folk

North Norfolk is renowned for its spectacular coastline,

fantastic wildlife, miles of glorious beaches, seaside

communities and a beautiful hinterland of rolling countryside

and picturesque market towns and villages. North Norfolk must

be the birdwatching capital of the UK, and you can even take a

boat trip to see the seal colony at Blakeney Point.

Between the lively seaside resort of Hunstanton and the pretty

town of Sheringham is a spectacular coastline, most of which is

designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here the

landscape of tidal marshes, creeks, shingle spits, and sweeping

golden beaches is backed by Christmas-scented pine woods. It

includes the Holkham Estate, and its beach at Wells-next-the-

Sea, voted the best beach in Britain.

Further to the East is the imperious clifftop setting of Cromer,

with its Victorian pier striding proudly out to sea. The coastline

then meanders southward to the secluded beaches of

Mundesley and Happisburgh, and inland to the traditional mar-

ket town of North Walsham.

The North Norfolk Railway begins and ends at genteel Holt, a

fabulously handsome market town which has become a mecca

for discerning visitors looking for independent shops. Most of

Holt was burned in its famous fire of 1708, and in its place

rose a splendid Georgian town focusing on an appealing

Market Place. Just outside the town is Letheringsett Mill,

lovingly restored to former glory on the River Glaven.

This is also Deep History Coast, where the biggest and best-

preserved mammoth skeleton was found, along with a

prehistoric flint axe and 850,000 year old human footprints.

Saturday Rideout to Sher ingham

Via Holkham Hal l

We are thrilled to yet again be welcomed back to Holkham Hall in

this our special anniversary year. There we will witness the breath

taking spectacle of hundreds of Harley Davidsons lining the Long

Ride. Then we make our way along the highways and byways of

scenic north Norfolk.

If this is your first visit, Holkham Hall is an 18th Century mansion

built in the Palladian Style and continues to be the ancestral and

family home to the Earls of Leicester. The first Earl of Leicester

conceived its design but sadly died in 1759, five years before it

was completed. Our route around this iconic estate is not to be

missed.

Our ride then follows the coastal road taking in the villages of

Wells-next-the Sea, Cley (pronounced locally as Kli – emphasis on

the ‘i’), Blakeney, home to a huge seal population and Stiffkey

(pronounced Stewkey), famous for its cockles and for being the

parish whose rector, Harold Davidson, faced charges of immorality

and was defrocked in 1932 and was then, rather bizarrely, killed

by a lion!

Sheringham will again rumble to the sound of many Harley

Davidson engines as we enter the town. Welcoming spectators will

be thronging the streets, all keen to see the spectacle of custom

and chrome in this most British of seaside towns and the Mayor of

Sheringham and the Town Crier will greet our arrival.

Take time to absorb the atmosphere, enjoy some traditional

seaside fare, and be ready to join the ride back to site leaving at

2.30pm

Fr iday Rideout to K ings Lynn

King’s Lynn, originally known as ‘Lin’, is thought to have derived

its name from the Celtic word for a lake or pool, and it is

recorded that a large tidal lake originally covered this area.

In 1101 Bishop Herbert de Losinga of Thetford began the first

Medieval town by building St. Margaret’s Church (now King’s

Lynn Minster) and authorising a market. A small prosperous

town grew up quite quickly and, in 1204, following a charter

from Bishop John de Grey of Norwich, the town became

Bishop’s Lynn (Lenne Episcopi). By the late 12th century, a

further period of expansion began, with wider straighter

streets and a much larger market place, known as the second

Medieval town.

Bishop’s Lynn grew rich on trade, both within Britain and

abroad. The Hanseatic League, a powerful German trading

organisation made up of merchants from North Germany and

neighbouring countries contributed greatly to this prosperity.

The legacy of trade can be found in the many merchant houses

and other fascinating buildings. After the dissolution of the

monasteries by Henry VIII, Lynn changed its name to Lynn

Regis – subsequently King’s Lynn – remaining an active port

to this day.

The town has so many fascinating secrets to discover

including the carving of the ‘witch’s heart’ on one of the

buildings in the magnificent Georgian Tuesday Market Place,

one of England’s grandest town squares which also houses

the Alive Corn Exchange, now a thriving concert hall as well as

the elegant Custom House overlooking the original medieval

harbour.

Line-up outside the main rally field gate at 10.30am as

directed by the marshals for an 11am departure, arriving at

Kings Lynn just after mid-day and departing for the return

journey at about 2.30pm
