TO THE VIRGINIA CENTER FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS

WELCOME

Since its founding nearly fifty years ago, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts has hosted thousands of writers, visual artists, and composers in residencies that have advanced their practice, given time to specific projects, and allowed new ideas to flourish. The impact of VCCA’s “creative space” on the cultural life of our nation and world is seen in museums and galleries, heard in concert halls and performance spaces, and read in publications too numerous to mention. I hope that your time will be productive, refreshing, and energizing.

Since I first became involved with VCCA, I have been trying to define it’s special magic. One aspect is certainly the year-round beauty of place – the sweeping Blue Ridge views, specimen trees, boxwood-lined paths, and the starlit skies provide daily inspiration. Another is the devoted, passionate staff whose commitment to “creative space” and to artists shapes the experience.

The other, and perhaps most powerful contributor to the magic, is the community that springs up here from the un-choreographed, random assembly of gifted people devoted to creative work. New Fellows arriving without preconceptions mix with returning artists who transmit knowledge, memory, and, I have come to believe, a strong and pervading culture of artistic freedom and mutual support. We hold up that sense of community, more important than ever in our rapidly-changing world, as a hallmark of VCCA.

VCCA thrives as a result of the strong partnership between the artists who benefit from its service and others who affirm the creative process through their support of VCCA. Please let us know what you find special about your experience here and what we might improve. Your advocacy, ambassadorship, and support put wind in our sails!

Yours,

THE VCCA STORYThe Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) is a unique Virginia-based organization of national stature and international impact. In service of a clear mission of providing “creative space for the world’s best artists to create their finest literature, visual art and music,” VCCA hosts over 400 artist Fellows each year at its Mt. San Angelo facility in Amherst, VA and the Moulin à Nef in Auvillar, France.

Mt. San Angelo was not VCCA’s first home. In the late 1960’s, Elizabeth Coles Langhorne, a Charlottesville writer, was convinced of the value of artist retreats and began to look for ways to pursue the idea of an artist colony in Virginia. Her longtime friend, Edith Newcomb, graciously offered her farm Wavertree as well as financial support for the establishment of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

A Board of Directors was immediately organized and efforts begun to raise funds for the project. Betty Langhorne served as President of the first

Board with William Massey Smith serving as Vice-President and Alex von Thelen as Treasurer. Edith Newcomb was the Resident Director of Wavertree. Authors Nancy Hale and

Peter Taylor, along with George Kendall, the former and longtime Director of the MacDowell Colony, served as Directors.

The first Fellows began arriving at Wavertree in June of 1971, and the VCCA operated year-round and through the fall of 1973.

In the spring of 1974, Mrs. Rosamund Frost Lowell offered to purchase historic Prospect Hill in Louisa County and give it to VCCA over a five-year period. Faced with financial difficulties, the limited capacity of the estate and the stumbling blocks of renovating within historic guidelines, the Board made the decision to close Prospect Hill in the fall of 1975.

Reluctant to give up her dream of a Virginia arts colony, Betty Langhorne shared her enthusiasm with William Smart, VCCA Fellow and professor of English at Sweet Briar College. She proposed negotiating with the College for a trial summer residency program on the College campus with the possibility of a permanent year-round retreat on Mt. San Angelo, an estate owned by Sweet Briar. Smart was enthusiastic and supportive. Accepting the position of Director of the VCCA in 1975, he and Langhorne worked diligently with Sweet Briar College on a plan.

Mt. San Angelo opened to Fellows on January 1, 1978, after initial renovations to both the 13,000-square foot 1930s-era Normandy-style barn and the 1850s era Italianate mansion. Tragically, a year and a half later the mansion burned to the ground while undergoing renovations. The Fellows moved into their studios to live and continue working. A design was begun on a new residential building with the assistance of John Owen, an architect serving on the Board, and the Fellows Residence was completed in 1981.

In 2004, VCCA acquired the Moulin à Nef in the village of Auvillar in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France. Here, VCCA Abroad hosts around 50 artists a year–four at a time–through residencies lasting two to four weeks. VCCA also has international residency exchange programs with organizations in Austria, Germany, and Ireland. The international opportunities are available to VCCA Fellows who have had a residency in Virginia.

1810-1830 Vermont native Elijah Fletcher moves to Virginia and purchases a house with roughly 1,000 acres which he names Sweetbrier because of the lands abundance of wild roses. Used as a summer home until 1841 when he permanently moves from Lynchburg to Sweetbrier.

1858 Fletcher’s two daughters, Indiana and Elisabeth, inherit Sweetbrier. When the estate is divided, Indiana drew the portion of Sweetbrier Plantation, purchases Elisabeth’s share and renames the plantation Sweet Briar. Elisabeth and her husband move to the adjoining tract and begin the plans for Mount St. Angelo including the 27-acre lawn that was planted with more than 70 varieties of trees and shrubs.

1870-1880 The two-story brick Italianate villa with gable roofs and tower is completed, yet neither Elisabeth nor her husband live to see it finished. The property is bequeathed to the Catholic Sisters in Lynchburg who refuse it, and Mt. St. Angelo reverts to Indiana Fletcher Williams, becoming part of the Sweet Briar holdings.

HISTORY TIMELINE OF VCCA

1901 Sweet Briar College is founded upon the legacy of Indiana Fletcher Williams who died in 1900. The college is designed predominately by architect Ralph Adams Cram.

1906 Sweet Briar College opens.

1908 Sweet Briar College remodels the villa into a much larger Georgian Revival mansion and sells Mt. St. Angelo to English physician and research chemist George E. Walker. The Walkers hosted many social events at Mt. St. Angelo for Sweet Briar students. It was an important social center for the college.

1915 After Dr. Walker’s death, Alfred C. and Ethel Barrow purchase Mt. St. Angelo. The Barrows construct a lake and add extensively to the gardens including a sunken boxwood garden centered with a pool filled with water lilies and edged with peonies, iris, boxwood and roses. They border the drive with boxwoods and plant flowering crabapples and cherry trees.

1932 Mr. and Mrs. Holland Reavis purchase Mt. St. Angelo renaming it Mt. San Angelo. They add a 13,000 square-foot Normandy style barn, a swimming pool, an overseer’s cottage and tennis courts. Extensive vegetable and fruit gardens are also added. 1968 Mt. San Angelo is re-purchased for Sweet Briar College with funds from an anonymous donor.

1977 The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) acquires use of the central grounds and buildings of the 445-acre Mt. San Angelo through a long-term lease with Sweet Briar College. 1978 VCCA opens on the grounds of Mt. San Angelo and begins full-time operation as a working retreat for writers, composers, and visual artists.

1979 The Mt. San Angelo mansion is lost in a catastrophic fire while undergoing renovation. A large number of plantings and formal gardens remain.

1981 The VCCA Fellows Residence is completed. It is designed by Clark, Nexsen, Owen, Barbieri and Gibson, the same firm that designed the 1933 barn.

1989 VCCA begins a partnership with the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus, its first international exchange partner.Later exchanges are added with other artists communities in Germany, as well as with programs in Ireland, Austria, and Malta.

2003 The Overseer’s Cottage is remodeled and enlarged to accommodate the VCCA offices.

2004 VCCA acquires the Moulin à Nef in the village of Auvillar in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France.

2006 VCCA France is incorporated as a French nonprofit organization.

2011 Celebrating its 40th year, VCCA at Mt. San Angelo is considered one of the foremost international artist retreats and is the only artist retreat with direct ties to a college or university.

GOOD TO KNOW FORGET SOMETHING?There are a variety of items available for check out in the office and VCCA also provides weekly trips into Amherst for Fellows. See Doing Business on page 15.

PREPARING FOR YOUR RESIDENCYClothingYou should bring clothing for informal country living and occasional parties. Rainwear, including all-weather shoes (and boots during the winter) are needed throughout the year. July and August are usually hot (85°-95° F, 29°-35° C). September and early October are often warm (70°-85° F, 21°-35° C), but nights may be considerably cooler (40°-50° F, 5°-10° C). Since it can be cold in late fall and winter (November through February), you should bring warm clothes. Spring weather usually begins by mid-March.

Laundry and LinensVCCA supplies clean towels and bed linens each week. If you plan to swim, you should bring extra towels of your own. Coin-operated laundry machines are provided for personal items.

Useful ItemsThe beautiful grounds and walkways to and from the Studio Barn and the Langhorne Residence have uneven surfaces: gravel, grass, and uneven asphalt. There are no covered walkways or sidewalks. You may want to bring a flashlight and an umbrella for your walks to and from your studio.

VCCA offers WiFi in the Langhorne Residence and the Studio Barn but given our rural location there are limits to the bandwidth we can provide. If your work relies on internet access, you may want to consider bringing a

hotspot with you for use during your residency.

ARRIVALWhen you arrive at VCCA, proceed to the Langhorne Residence for Fellows. In the foyer of the building, you will find your welcome packet on the top of the mailboxes, next to the stairs. This packet contains your bedroom and studio assignment, VCCA ID, keys, and important paperwork for you to complete.

You may arrive at any time on the first day of your residency. Please let us know if you plan to arrive before 10 a.m.

If you would like help moving into your room or studio, please be here by 2 p.m. as our facilities staff leaves at 3 p.m on weekdays. They are not available on weekends.

If you arrive on a weekend, after 5 p.m., or on a holiday, Resident Director David Garratt (434) 946-9557 or (434) 851-7318 can answer questions and assist you in locating your studio and bedroom.

If you will be arriving in inclement weather, please use the back entrance to the property. Directions to this entrance are on our website under Travel Information.

You may park to unload at the Residence and at your studio. Daily parking is in the lot near the Residence, on the edge of the property facing the highway.

For your convenience, there are additional toilets located in the Fellows Residence: off the living room, in the laundry room, and at the end of the upstairs N/S wing hallway. If there are plumbing issues, please notify a staff member. If it occurs on a weekend, a “plumber’s helper” is located in the Laundry Room.

In order for our housekeeping staff to stay on schedule, please vacate your bedroom by 9:30 a.m. on the day of departure.

GREEN TIPPlease keep the transom open above your bedroom door, this improves air circulation and takes the strain off of the HVAC system.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIESA medical emergency is defined as a serious medical condition resulting from an injury or sickness, which arises suddenly and requires immediate care and treatment to avoid danger to the person’s life or health.

Paramedics will always be called in an emergency situation. If the individual does not want to travel to the hospital in an ambulance, VCCA policy prevents a VCCA employee from transporting a Fellow to the hospital either in their personal vehicle or a VCCA vehicle. Another Fellow may offer to drive the individual to the hospital.

HARASSMENT ISSUESVCCA’s community of artists is based on a foundation of respect, cooperation, and self-regulation. Discrimination or harassment towards any member of the community will not be tolerated. Fellows are expected to adhere to all federal and state laws and regulations while in residence. Please bring any concerns to the attention of the Director of Artists Services without delay. VCCA reserves the right to ask any individual to leave the residency for behavior that, in the judgement of the Director of Artists Services or Executive Director, contributes in any way to the disruption of the creative process or residential life at VCCA.

VCCA GROUNDSMt. San Angelo is a pastoral, inspiring place and we encourage you to wander the property in any direction. There are hidden gardens, woods, and a pond to explore. During hunting season (September through January and April through May), please be aware and wear bright colors or blaze orange when walking. There are a few blaze orange vests available for check-out in the office. Flashlights are available for Fellows who would like to borrow one for the duration of their residency.

OUTDOOR SCULPTURESA map of our sculpture collection is available in the office.

LOCAL WILDLIFEThere is a lot of wildlife in our rural location, including different types of spiders, snakes and insects that you may have never seen before. Do not be alarmed if a black snake crosses your path or if a big hairy spider shows up in your sink, they are harmless. Three animals that you may find on the grounds are poisonous: the Copperhead snake, the Black Widow spider, and the Brown Recluse spider. If you come across any suspicious wildlife please notify the office immediately. For more information about Virginia wildlife visit www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife.

WALKING TRAILThe trail head is located just beyond the pool on the far west side of the property. The white-blaze trail and the red-blaze trail make a 1.5 mile loop through the woods. Follow the white blazes down the hill, over the creek bridge, alongside the lake and up through the woods. Along the way you will find several benches, ideally situated for sitting and thinking, reading, or enjoying a picnic lunch. (At the second bench you can cross the creek and follow the red blazes.) At the end of the trail you will find yourself in the field located just to the west of the Studio Barn complex.

While you enjoy the tranquillity of the trail, please be cautious and tread carefully. The trail is a single-file dirt path that can become muddy and slippery at times. Paths may also be blocked by fallen trees. Please wear appropriate shoes and watch your step to avoid tripping over rocks, tree roots and other similar impediments. During hunting season, September through January, and April and May, please be aware and wear bright colors or blaze orange when walking.

The woods are home to such wildlife as deer, wild turkeys, woodpeckers and other birds, tree frogs, Canada geese, ducks, harmless black snakes, and, unfortunately, ticks. An insect repellent is suggested, and please check yourself for ticks after your walk! Please report any problems or hazards to the staff. Happy Trails!

DOGS ON STAGE ROADAmherst County does not have a leash law. As a result, dogs roam free on Stage Road, which runs behind VCCA and is a popular walking spot with Fellows. We urge you to take a walking stick when you amble through the back gate. If a dog harasses you, please inform a staff member as soon as possible so we may take the appropriate action.

IN THE STUDIOTHE STUDIO BARNTwenty-three of our twenty-five studios are located in the Studio Barn complex. Two additional writing studios are located in the Cottage, next to the Langhorne Residence.

In the Studio Barn you will find 3 kitchens, 5 bathrooms, and a storage area for the VCCA art collection. The Resident Director also lives in the complex.

To reach the barn, we recommend you use the walking path or the roadways located at the perimeter of the lawn.

A map of the barn is available at the back of this handbook.

STUDIOSStudios are equipped with furnishings that are inventoried to each studio. If there is something that you need but don’t find in your studio, please notify the office manager during office hours. Please do not move furnishings, equipment, or fixtures into the hallway or from one studio to another. Otherwise, the studio is yours to arrange as you see fit.

Studios are cleaned between residencies but will not be cleaned during your stay. Cleaning equipment and supplies are located in the Fellows kitchens.

You are welcome to stay in your studio as late as you would like on your day of departure, but you will not included in the count for lunch or dinner on that day. Please inform the kitchen staff if you will be staying for those meals.

STUDIO ETIQUETTENoise travels easily throughout the barn complex. Please keep your studio door closed and use headphones if you plan to listen to music while working. If you are speaking in the halls, please use your “library voice.” If you leave your studio late at night, please check the kitchen closest to your studio to make sure the stove, oven and lights are off.

VISUAL ARTISTSPlease help us keep the studios in good condition for all Fellows.

• To avoid damage, please cover the working walls and adjacent floor with inexpensive plastic drop cloths, available for sale in the office and at local hardware stores.

• We ask that you use odor-free turpenoid or non-toxic paint thinners.

• Oily rags and turpentine should be disposed of properly. Located just outside of C3, next to the silo you will find a can for used rags and marked containers for turps.

• Wall and table surfaces should be left in the same condition in which you found them. If needed, please request paint and painting equipment at the office several days before your departure.

• Please be sure to pick up trash and sweep your studio at the end of your residency. For more departure information, see page 15.

GREEN TIPPlease help us conserve energy by turning the heat or air-conditioning down when the studio is unoccupied (except in the composers’ studios).

FELLOWS READINGS, OPEN STUDIOS, AND PERFORMANCES

Fellows often wish to share their recent work by offering performances, readings or open studios. These informal gatherings are scheduled individually and are a source of great pleasure, but as a rule attendance at any of these gatherings is optional.

Readings may be given in any of the common rooms of the Langhorne Residence.

A WORD ABOUT YOUR RESIDENCY PAYMENTS

VCCA is supported through the partnership of the artists it serves and the donors who are committed to advancing creative work. In order to make VCCA sustainable, we depend on all accepted applicants to help offset the cost of their residencies to the best of their ability.

The cost of a VCCA residency is $150 per artist/per day. While Fellows are accepted regardless of their ability to pay, your residency payment is a necessary part of the long-term success of VCCA.

TECHNOLOGYCELLULAR PHONESVCCA is a quiet and contemplative environment. To avoid disturbing others, please use phones only in your bedroom, in the phone room of the Fellows Residence, or outside.

TELEPHONE USEA phone is located in the phone room off of the living room at the Fellows’ Residence. Another, in the main kitchen at the barn, can make outgoing calls only. Phone cards are the best method of paying charges. You may purchase phone cards at the local pharmacy.

INTERNET ACCESSNetworks: Residence or StudioPassword: @vcca154

We have wireless Internet access across much of the VCCA property. There are access points in the Studio Barn, the Cottage and the Langhorne Residence. There is also a wired computer station in the library.

Everyone at VCCA shares the same bandwidth. We ask that you refrain from downloading large files or streaming movies, tv shows or music, as this impacts all other users on the grounds.

Computer stations are also available at Sweet Briar College in the computer labs and the library that Fellows may use when available.
