RULES FOR THEMIDDLE YEARS(4G3a) DRONE SPEEDS: All drones have a speedof 16 during the Middle Years. This makes drone-armed ships somewhat less effective in combat asdrones can only hit targets which are slow-moving orcoming straight at you. During the Middle Years, drones were mostly used to influence enemy move-ment away or to pick off cripples and stragglers. Whenfaster drones became available in the General War,ships mounting more and more drone racks becamecommon.

(4J4) PLASMA CARRONADE: This function is notavailable during the Middle Years as it had not beeninvented. Since its invention was primarily in responseto increasing defenses against plasma (defenses notavailable in the Middle Years) that should be less ofan issue.

(5L1) ORION WEAPONS: Plasma-S is replaced byplasma-G. Plasma arc FP becomes FA, LP becomesL+LF, and RP becomes RF+R.

(5M3) WEB SNARES: This function is not availableduring the Middle Years because the Neo-Tholians(who brought that technology to the Milky Way Gal-axy) had not yet arrived here. Web boxes are simplyweb generators, and more or less useless except totrap a slow-moving or crippled ship or to defend aplanet or base.

(5N2a) EXPANDING SPHERE GENERATORS:These systems do not have power capacitors duringthis period. The only time energy can be added to anESG is at the instant it is activated. Up to five pointsof power can be used, but it cannot be stored andmust be used immediately. This is one example ofthe “refits” during the General War which made shipstake less thinking to actually fly. In the Middle Years, you will actually have to plan your ESG usage a bitmore in advance, as you cannot simply dump unusedpower there for possible use at some future moment.

(5Q) HYDRAN STINGERS: During the Middle Years,Hydran ships carried Stinger-1 fighters, which haveonly one phaser-3 (not a Gatling phaser) and fewerdamage points. Stinger-1s cost eight points each. These fighters were far less dangerous (and some-what easier to kill) than the Stinger-2s seen in DistantKingdoms.

(7D) KLINGON DRONES: Most Klingon ships canonly launch one drone from each pair of two droneracks during a given turn. This is noted on the shipcards. Ships with one rack launch normally. Certainships are exceptions to this (they do not have the note)including the G2 police cutter (which mounts its dronesin the hull rather than the shuttle bay) and the F5C(which is a command ship with better systems).
