The Sports and Recreation Program for Children with ASD is Off to a Wonderful Start

We are really grateful to the wonderful volunteers that made our first program such a success. Our Aquatics sessions had the St. Peter’sswim team members, Connor, Matt, Kevin, Rich, and Joe, taking time out of their busy schedules to give our participants 1:1 instruction.Basketball was supported by Tottenville High School’s basketball team members Brandon and Mike who got up early every Sunday morningand helped every week. And Yoga/ Movement had 2 inspirational yoga instructors, Jen and Agnes, who led our sessions.I can tell that our program is making a difference in our participants’ lives by the feedback I receive from their parents. The children are

thrilled to be there each week and the parents are thrilled with the results. As we look towards the spring and warmer weather, we willcontinue with our swimming program and are working on putting together a soccer clinic.

This month’s spotlight shines on our Infant Room at the NorthShore. Our beautiful infants are ready for their very busy, excit-ing day. They play with their friends and head straight to the mu-sical instruments. Climbing over the foam shapes is a challengethat they love to do.Toys and music always fill the room. Then itis story time, where the infants sit in awe, listening to the won-derful stories that their teachers read to them. The smiles andgiggles from our cute little infants makes the day oh so special…this is where it all begins…this is where friendships are made….asthe spotlight shines on the infant room.Teachers: Miss Joan, Miss Helen, Miss Lubna, Miss Liljana

Dear Fit Pro’sI feel the Staten Island Chuck Groundhog has more energy and moti-vation than me to exercise! Help… how do I add some instant energyinto my day?

Signed,Chuck

Dear Chuck, A few lifestyle changes can help you sail through your schedule withstamina to spare. Something as basic as adding protein to your lunchor taking a 10 minute power nap (not at your desk, of course) can makeyou feel energetic in an instant. • Drink enough water- The reason you feel run down may simply be that you are dehydrated. Keep a bottle in your desk or car and aim for 8 eight ounce glasses a day. • Eat breakfast in the afternoon- Your second breakfast that is. As a before-dinner pick me up, enjoy a bowl of whole grain cereal with skim milk and a few slices of banana. All three foods are high in B vitamins, which your body uses to make energy. • Go green- People who work in windowless offices are more produc-tive when they put plants in their work space.• Light a scented candle- Grapefruit has been linked to an increase in energy and a decrease in anxiety.
