St. Patrick’s of Tekamah:

Stewardship Thoughts: “Brothers and sisters, I should like you to be free of anxieties.”

-1 Corinthians 7:32- How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this- use the word “pray” instead of the word “worry” in the future.. Children’s good deed: “I helped clean up the Art Room after class; I took my dog for a walk.”

Prayer by St. Bernadette Soubirous Teach and strengthen us- Christ Jesus, we ask not that

you would spare us affliction, but that you will not abandon us in it. When we encounter affliction, teach us to see you in it as our sole comforter. Let affliction strengthen our faith, fortify our hope, and purify our love. Grant us the grace to see how we can use our affliction to your glory, and to desire no other comforter but you, our Savior, Strengthener, and Friend. Amen

From Your Pastor… Human responses to a tragedy or some great trial might be this: “It just does not seem fair! I have not done anything wrong or evil to deserve this kind of suffering.” Job’s sentiment is one that we can all relate to for we read: “So I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me….I am filled with restlessness until the dawn….Remember that my life is like the wind; I shall not see happiness again.” Honestly, there are days, weeks and sometimes years when any person can experience great hardship, illness, loss and challenge. We are never fully prepared for the trial, but God desires that we persevere in faith and prayer. The Scriptures this weekend offer inspiration by the examples of Job in the first reading and Jesus in the gospel about how unexpected circumstances unfold in life. Blessed with courageous faith in God, Job endures his losses and misery, and he never rejects God. The end of Job’s life is overflowing with abundant graces and blessings from God, as he persevered through the very difficult times. His experience is worthy to remember. In addition, Jesus reveals God’s care and healing power again as we listen to Mark’s account. The amazing thing that surfaces at the end of the passage is that after Jesus healed people, he still was committed and disciplined with his prayer life. He knew and showed us that true spiritual wisdom and power arise from a solid, faithful prayer life. It is through prayer that we too can stay focused on God, who may not appear to be near but is always with us through it all.

LENT is near, starting on Feb 18th! Ash Wednesday Masses will be 5:30PM @ St. Patrick and 7:00PM @ Holy Family. St. Patrick Fish Fry Fridays will begin on Feb 20th!

FAITH FACT What Makes a Person Spiritually Mature?

From a magazine article, there are five traits mature

Christians demonstrate including behaviors, insights, and

beliefs which help them navigate life with a reliable compass.

For the next few weeks, we will review them. The first trait is

a relationship with Jesus Christ. The second trait is

commitment to a kind of prayer that moves beyond simple,

devotional practice and incorporates Holy Eucharist every

weekend along with other sacramental celebrations. The third

trait is to appreciate growth that comes through pain. As

humans who live and love imperfectly, even the most mature

people can experience times of disillusionment, sin, and pain.

The Gospel reminds us that we are more than sinful creatures

and that virtue can offer healing and grace. The fourth trait is

the capacity to develop deep reservoirs of compassion. When

life itself incorporates suffering and death, Jesus invites us to

pick up the cross. Acknowledging our limited abilities, we

realize that we can never fully relieve another’s suffering, yet

our desire to listen and walk with them is a gift that offers

reassurance and awareness that at death, life is changed,

not ended.

The Lighter Side The lawyer wrote a note to one of his clients: “Thought I saw you on the street the other day. I crossed over to say, hello, but it wasn’t you, so I went back. One-tenth of an hour, $25.”

Kill two birds with one stone this year. Give up your New Year’s resolutions for Lent.
