Letter to an 8th Grader

I came across this beautiful letter that a father wrote to his daughter upon her graduation from 8th grade.

“I feel that it is the responsibility of parents not to pave the road for their children but to provide a road map. Therefore, your Mom and I decided to write for you a few words of counsel that have served us well in life. As you go through life add to the list, then pass it on to your children."

Compliment three people every day. Look people in the eye. Tell the truth. Say "thank you" and "please" a lot. Don't expect life to be fair. Don't be afraid to say, "I'm sorry." Never cheat. Keep secrets. Live beneath your means. Treat everyone you meet as you want to be

treated. Make new friends, but cherish old ones. Admit your mistakes. Don't gossip. Have good posture. Enter a room with purpose and confidence. Never underestimate the power of forgiveness. Don't spread yourself too thin. Learn to say no politely and quickly. Pray every day. Pray not for things, but for wisdom and courage. Never take action when you are angry. Watch a sunrise at least once a year. Choose a charity in your community and support

it generously with your time and money. Be willing to loose the battle in order to win the war. Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all he or she has. Be bold and courageous. When you look back on

your life, you'll regret the things you didn't do more than the ones you did.

Call your mother. Don't procrastinate. Do what needs doing when it

needs to be done. Get your priorities straight. Balance your life between faith, family, exercise and work.

Siempre Adelante, Fr. Mike

Retirement Fund for Archdiocesan Priests

This weekend all parishioners throughout our Archdiocese will be asked to give generously to support the Retirement Fund for Archdiocesan priests via a special collection.

Currently, the fund provides for 153 priests who are retired. During the next 10 years, an addi-tional 207 priests, who are actively serving in the Archdiocese today, will turn 65 years of age or be newly retired.

Many of the retired priests are well known in the parishes. Each parish has most probably had the experience of a priest retiring from active ministry. Some of our retired priests have stayed very active in the parish where they retired, or for other parish communities. Most have simply retired from admin-istrative responsibilities (as health requires), not from serving the people.

The primary source of income for retired priests is the Priest Pension Plan, which was for-mally established in 1993. Like the Religious Or-ders of men and women, so little was put into Social Security, very little is received each month by way of a Social Security check.

Did You Know The USCCB Child and Youth Protection Of-

fice 2012 Annual Audit Report is now available. The Stone Bridge Business Partners 2012 Audit

Report to the USCCB Child and Youth Protection Of-fice has just been released in May, 2013 and is now available online. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is proud to be one of the 20 dioceses who participated in the live Safe Environment Parish Audit process listed in the report. We' believe that our parishes and schools are the most important part of audit methodology. Without their efforts and commitment to protecting our children and young people, the progress we have made these past 11 years would not be possible.

Bible Question of the Week: In our Biblical Walk through the Mass, what is

the last segment of the Liturgy of the Word?

Last Week's Answer: In our Biblical Walk through the Mass, why is

the Gospel reading so significant? We believe that the Sacred Scriptures are inspired by God. So in the Gos-pel, God Himself is speaking to His people and Christ is proclaiming the Gospel to us. It is in the Gospel readings that we can hear Christ telling the apostles about the love, mercy and grace of our God. We can mentally sit at the feet of our Lord and listen as He teaches of these things in His parables. During the proclamation of the Gospel, we are not hearing about what Jesus taught, we are hearing Him speak to each one of us. If we listen with an open spirit, His words have a specific and unique meaning for every one of us. The Wednesday night Bible study is open to all.

The Italian Catholic Federation would like to invite you to attend our first course in Conversational Italian.

Franco Giangualano will be instructing partici-pants on the art of Italian conversation

The classes (for adults) will be held weekly on Saturdays from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. starting June 15th, the course is six weeks long.

The cost is ICF members $10 for class material and $30 enrollment plus $10 class material for non ICF members.

Mission Appeal By The Syro-Malankara Catholic

Apostolic Exarchate in USA On July 14, 2010, the Holy Father Benedict

XVI established an Apostolic Exarchate for the Syro-Malankara Catholic Faithful in the USA. The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church traces its origin to the preaching of St. Thomas the Apostle who is believed to have made his missionary journey to India in the year 52 AD. The liturgy used by this Church is one of the oldest in the Christian tradition, founded by St. James the Apostle. There are around ten thousand Syro--Malankara Catholic faithful in the US, spread out in the different States of America. The Holy Fa-ther established the new Exarchate in order to enable this community to live its Christian call and mission in the specific ecclesial tradition of its own.

Though we are deeply constrained by the limitations of infra-structure, personnel, etc., we are trying our best to give the best possible Chris-tian witness in this great country as an ancient apostolic Church with its own specific liturgical and spiritual traditions. We are hopeful of having a few more vocations to priesthood and religious life in the coming years. We are badly in need of a Center for our seminarians. This is one of the specific needs for which this mission preaching is undertaking.
