A Message

from

Fr. Tony

Herold

Lent is late this year … it be-gins this Wednesday, March first. Having said that, it sure did sneak up on me! Please take time to look at the Lenten activities that are planned beginning this Wednesday. We will have the usual — Stations of the Cross, Rice Bowl, and times for extra prayer. Next Saturday we also are encouraging all of you, particularly families, to come to Church sometime during the hours of 9:30 and 3:30 PM to spend a half hour or so in prayer as a family. The Blessed Sacra-ment will be exposed on the altar. I can’t think of a better exam-ple for parents to set for their children than to bring them for a special time of prayer in the church. Yes, there may be some resistance, but I would suggest you make it an “event” ...do something special during that time. Prepare the family by talk-ing about some special intentions to bring to this time of prayer. Think of family members or friends or those outside of your family group who need prayer. Also next weekend we will have special exhibits in the Gath-ering Space showcasing our new initiative in Haiti. Don Blough,

Deacon Bob Shaw and Tara Greufe traveled to Haiti within this past year and started laying down a relational foundation for us to twin with a parish in that impoverished country. More than lending these brothers and sisters a helping hand, however, we will have an opportunity to share the way they live their faith in very different conditions than we have here in the United States. What a beautiful way to start our Lenten journey!! I am sure that by now you have heard about Fr. Bill Kneemiller’s accident. A week ago last Friday as he was coming into church he fell and broke his knee cap in three places. Ouch! He will be out of commission for a few weeks and we (I) will take up the slack as he recovers. Please keep Fr. Bill in your prayers. Leave it to Fr. Bill to encour-age the doctors and nurses in the hospital as well as the X ray tech-nicians to join him in praying the psalms as he received treatment for this break. He is a great ex-ample of prayerful invitation and evangelization. Perhaps we could say a psalm for his intention and I would suggest the familiar good shepherd psalm … Psalm 23. May the Lord shepherd all of us during this upcoming Lent!

QUESTIONS BASED ON OUR READINGS: The Lord has forsaken me.” Did Jesus say this? Did he endure it? Who can relate to such misery today? How do you think God comforts people in 2017? Do the motives of our hearts relate to being good stewards of the gos-pel? What motivates your heart?

Last weekend, we promised that we would let you know about our visit to the primary school that

is near our sister parish, St. Francis.

In January, St. Paul School students wrote brief pen pal letters to the students in Courette. Parish-

ioners Don Blough and Ben Jones, along with other Serve Haiti volunteers, visited the school to

get to know the students and to deliver the letters. The visit was very fun, but more than fun- it

was uplifting! Imagine 200 students, ages from 3 to 15, and five teachers, squeezed into 600

square feet, sitting hip to hip on crude benches, most turning sideways just to fit. Sounds pretty

tough to teach and learn, right? It happens everyday in Haiti, but despite the crowded quarters, the students were happy

to be there, eager to learn, and looking great in their matching uniforms.

The younger students, dressed in bright yellow, sang a very spirited song as the older students, in navy uniforms, read

the St. Paul School pen pal letters, and then took some time to write response letters. Photos were taken of everyone.

Teachers and students alike seemed very excited about becoming friends with, and learning more about, the students of

St. Paul’s.

These eager students and their parents greatly value education and often make a great sacrifices to ensure that their chil-

dren are able to go to school. In Courette, the average yearly salary is around $300 and school can cost from $100-$200

per child. It truly is a universal desire for parents to want what is best for their children.

As a sister parish to St. Francis parish in Courette, which is just steps from this school, we hope to positively impact the

lives of the students and their families. Our most important step of building a relationship with these beautiful children

has just begun and we look forward to getting to know them all better! We will be telling you more about these special

kiddos at the Masses on the weekend of March 4th and 5th. If you’d like to hear even more, we would love to share our

stories with you, your families, study groups, businesses, or just anyone that would like to listen!

Please feel free to contact Don Blough 320-7265 or Tara Greufe 340-5704 for information or to let us know that you,

too, want to help us in building a relationship with the special people in Courette.

Jesus, I Come to Thank You

The following is a prayer is taken from

Adore My Son with Your Heart, written by Father Slavko Barbaric.

Jesus, I come to thank You

Jesus, I Adore You, because You constantly thanked the Father.

Jesus, I love You, because You taught me how to thank.

Jesus, I believe in You, because You have the Word of Eternal Life.

Lent will begin soon, and with it, there will be an additional opportunity to quiet our hearts and to

place ourselves in the beautiful and Holy presence of Our Lord in Adoration. As we commit to

offering prayer, penance, and almsgiving in this upcoming Lenten Season, we will create more

room within our hearts for Jesus to enter, to heal us and to shower us with His Loving Mercy as

He wishes to do.

You are invited to spend time with the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament on Saturday,

March 4. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the 8:30am Mass and Adoration

will end with Benediction at 3:45pm that afternoon. We are genuinely excited to offer Adora-

tion on the weekend, hopeful that families may have the opportunity to attend together. Please go

to the sign-up genius to volunteer for a particular time slot. The Blessed Sacrament cannot be left

unattended and we need adorers throughout the day. However, even if you cannot commit to an

hour, please plan to stop in whenever you are able. Parents are encouraged to bring their children

to spend a “holy half hour.”

There are many ways to spend time with Jesus during Eucharistic Adoration. Sit quietly with Him.

Thank Him for His Sacrifice. Simply tell Him you love Him. Some people find that prayerful

reading helps to them to draw closer to Jesus. There will be some reading materials provided dur-

ing Adoration. They will be on a cart near one of the entrances. Please feel free to use them during

your visit.

The law of abstinence binds all Catholics fourteen years of age or older. If members of the Faithful are unable to observe this regulation because of ill health or other reasons, they are urged to practice others forms of penance and self-denial suitable to their condition. Currently serving as Artist in Residence and Re-search Fellow in Catholic Studies at the University of St. thomas in St. Paul, MN. Author and co-author of 6 books and over 250 articles and reviews. In June, he will be honored with the Pax Christi Award from St. John’s Monastery and University, College-ville, MN, along with Marty Haugen and David Haas. His compositions are sung by congregations, choirs and ensembles around the world and across a wide variety of Christian traditions. His most well-known hymn is “On Eagles’ Wings.”

Hosted by St. Paul the Apostle Church - Free Will Offering

Since 2012, St. Paul’s parishioner Tom Brooke has been launching his faith into action by recruiting groups of volun-

teers to help build and repair homes for partner families through our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Tom is well

aware of how blessed he is by being able to share his time serving. He says “having worked occasionally in construction

and other carpentry-related jobs, I've always enjoyed applying my skills to projects, where I can learn and do some last-

ing good.” He is also grateful that the volunteers who help don’t need professional building experience to participate.

He enjoys working side by side with them and learning new skills together by swapping building knowledge.

Tom shares that “The most enjoyable part of working on a Habitat build is meeting and visiting with the homeowners to

hear their stories firsthand. These are people, who started out with very little and have struggled to just get by – But

through faith and the support of a motivated Christian community, they have overcome their setbacks. It’s inspiring to

see their strength, determination and joy as they work on building something amazing out of what they have been given

from God, like a living example of the parable of the talents.”

If you’d like to learn more about volunteering for Habitat for Humanity or are interested in joining Tom on a build this

spring, please contact him at (563)650-2389 or via email at [email protected].
