A wreck waiting to happenThe wind was whipping and they were trying their best to catch up with their flying minnow bucket on ice that could rival the slick, smooth surface of the rink at the Valley Event Center. Although only one fish was caught during the 18th Annual Glasgow Chamber Ice Fishing Derby on the Old Trout Pond this past Saturday, those who attended had a good time despite the well-below wind chills. After a nice day yesterday, the deep freeze is settling in again today with a wind chill advisory in effect (values well over 20 below) from 6:00 tonight until 11:00 a.m. Thursday. But hey, we’re almost through February — just a couple more days of it and then spring is right around the corner!

That’s not a fishing pole in his hand... just doing what it takes to stay warm!

You knew it was coming President Obama vetoed a bill yesterday that would have approved the Keystone XL pipeline, making good on a threat to reject a proposal embraced by Republicans as a jobs measure but opposed by environmentalists as contributing to climate change. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the president vetoed the bill almost as soon as it arrived at the White House, “without any drama or fanfare or delay.” Terry O’Sullivan, general president of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, called the veto “disgustingly predictable.” An override of the Keystone veto is unlikely. The bill passed the House 270-152 and the Senate 62-36, margins well short of the two-thirds majorities needed to override. Says House Speaker John Boehner: “... the president is sadly mistaken if he thinks vetoing this bill will end this fight. Far from it. We are just getting started.” Without Keystone XL, U.S. refineries are forced to use other methods of transportation — the rail road — which is making billionaire Warren Buffet even more fortunes. But even he believes the Obama administration should approve TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline. “There’s a lot of the ‘not-in-my-backyard’ problem, but I think, by and large, Keystone should be done,” Buffett said.

Floyd L “Shorty” Doke was born in Glasgow on October 10, 1944, as the fourth child to Elmer Floyd Doke and Mary (Pointer) Doke. Shorty grew up on the family farm west of Glasgow and graduated from Glasgow High School in 1963. After graduating, he left Glasgow to work with his brother-in-law as a crane oiler on the Minute Man missiles in North Dakota and western Montana. He then went on to Columbia Falls to work construction on the aluminum plant there. From Columbia Falls, he travelled to Libby to work construction on the dam. After he left Libby, he continued his work in construction on the Rexford Bridge in Eureka. In the early 1970s, he returned to Glasgow where he began working at the water treatment plant at the Glasgow Air Base. Soon after, he began his career at the Valley County Road Department where he spent many happy years doing work he loved. One of Shorty’s favorite past times was operating “his” blade and he had no interest in ever retiring. He always said he had a “retirement job.” In 1977, he met the love of his life, Laurie (Hoyt) Doke, and they married soon after on May 27, 1978. They were excited to start a family and had their first child, Tanya, in 1979. In March of 1981, they had a son, Travis, and in January of 1983, they had their third child, Alicia. Shorty very much enjoyed being a father and his children were the center of his life. He loved the time he spent volunteering as a coach and a Scout leader. If one of his kids was participating in an event or game, he was in the stands cheering

them on. Later in life, he was always ready to jump in the car for a family trip to Billings. Shorty was a life member of the following: North Star Lodge No. 46, AF&AM, where he served as past Master, secretary/treasurer for many years, and was currently the present Master; Scottish

Rite of Free Masonry, SJ, in the Valley of Billings, Montana; Al Bedoo Shrine of Billings, Montana; and was a Past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star. Shorty also served on the Nemont Manor Board of Directors for many years. Shorty very much enjoyed being social, especially when he could talk and visit with friends and family for hours. He was an optimist, was generous, kind, and sharing. His good spirit was contagious. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Shorty peacefully passed away at home from natural causes on February 22, 2015 at the age of 70. He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Floyd and Mary Doke; his brother, Pleas Alan Doke; and his niece, Mary Rae Sherwood. He is survived by his wife, Laurie; his children, Tanya (Benjy) of Billings; Travis (Jessica) of Billings; and Alicia of Glasgow; his siblings, Clifford (Deb) Doke of Manassas, VA; Doris (John “Bud”) Sherwood of Spokane, WA; and Loretta Doke of Glasgow; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2015, at the Lutheran Church in Glasgow. A luncheon will follow at the VFW. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to donate to the charity of your choice in honor of Shorty.
