Welcome to our February edition of the Monthly Munch! We hope you all had an enjoyable festive season and are ready for a action packed month ahead.

With the new year comes some new QCWA Country Kitchens Team members! Welcome to Connie Conyard and Jodie McHenery who have joined our team. As the girls settle in and hit the road, be sure to make them feel welcome. The team have started the year in the kitchen testing new recipes to freshen up our Hands on Nutrition Work-shops. After two busy and exciting years, next stop was the Far North! Based in Cairns, Connie had the opportunity to explore from Ingham to Thursday Island while working as a dietitian. Country Kitchens Facilitators in the Spotlight! This month we feature two of our very dedicated, enthusiatic facilitators who have successfully hosted the Hands on Nutrition Workshops, and are doing a tremendous job engaging their community toward healthier activites.

Judy Stubbs - QCWA Nambour and North Coast QCWA Country Ktchens Division Facilitator, Maleny Branch President

I am a former teacher, demonstrator and promotion officer and am passionately interested in community service through the QCWA in the Nambour North Coast Division.

Our Country Kitchen's Program has given us a much needed new activity to add to what we can offer in supporting women and children, benefiting the family as a whole. The interest and support of the public, other community organisations, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the University of the Sunshine Coast are great indications that the message of nutrition and learn-ing to make good food choices is being well received. Branch and community members have shown great support for our Nutrition Workshops and are to be thanked for their enthusiasm in supported the Program, making new friends at the same time.

Linda Schneider – Northern Division QCWA Country Kitchens Division Facilitator I was one of the first group of facilitators that began in January of 2016. I met quite a number of like minded women who wanted to change our way of eating. My father was a diabetic for probably all my young life and mum struggled in keeping his blood sugars in control. Back then the diabetes education resources weren’t available like today. So, as a child I grew up with the diabetic diet. We didn’t suffer in fact we ate pretty healthy. Our treat of take away was fish and chips and that was a rarity. No maccas, pizza or red rooster at that time. I joined the Army Reserve in 1980 and did 23 years of soldiering. I dedicated my part time career to the Australian Army Catering Corps. We cooked in all types of conditions, dust, flies, heat, under tents, in camp off the back of a truck on the road. As the senior caterer my responsibility was to keep the troops on the ground sustained. Our biggest exercise we ever catered for was Kangaroo Exercise 1988 in Weipa. We were cooking and preparing 3,000 meals a day and did that over 9 days with 15 cooks along with the dust, flies, heat and under tents and dicky fridges to boot. As a Caterer, I was always passionate about the qual-ity of the food the soldiers were getting and the quantity. I am hoping that we can involve the Young Leaders which we are working toward encouraging new young ladies to attend and see if we can garner more interest in that group.

The QCWA Country Kitchens team is getting back on the road in February 2017! We are visiting a number of communities this month so be sure to check out where we are off to next…

WORKSHOPSIt’s a New Year and we have a number of new communities running the Hands on Nutrition Workshops in their branches. Chloe and Connie will be heading to the Central Highlands and Port Curtis visiting Emerald, Gladstone and Tannum Sands branches. They will be talking all about the Australian Dietary Guidelines, salt and hypertension. Participants will be treated to a demonstration from the team and then it will be their turn to get in the kitchen and whip up some delicious dishes. Jodie and Alice will be running the same workshops in three branches across the Darling Downs and West Moreton (Goombungee, Rosewood and Toowoomba City Business Women). Chloe and Connie will also be making the short trip to Yandina for workshop 1.

Jodie and Alice are very much looking forward to heading back up to the Northern Division. Abergowrie Longpocket, Forrest Beach, Magnetic Garbutt and Alligator Creek branches will be hosting their second workshop. Workshop two covers everything from sugar and diabetes to fat and cardiovascular disease. There will be plenty of cooking involved with some tasty muffin recipes being prepared by the team and participants will learn how to whip up some mouth-watering veggie side dishes!
