APPLIANCESIt’s really important to decide on your appliances before designing your new kitchen. Your designer needs this information so they can allow enough space for things like a French door fridge or large freestanding cooker, and your style of appliances will have an influence on the overall look.

APPLIANCES

An essential part of every modern kitchen, a good oven should give you and your family years of well-cooked meals. With so many different brands and types on the market, The Good Guys are here to help you work out which oven is right for you.

SIZE AND TYPES OF OVENSBigger may not always be better, particularly if you have a smaller kitchen and need an oven to fit within the available space. There are typically three types of oven: built-in single, built-in double and freestanding.

OVENS

BUILT-IN SINGLE FREESTANDING COOKERSA built-in single model oven needs to go in an oven housing, whether this is at eye level or under the worktop. Single multifunction ovens usually have a grill included, which saves space but means you can’t use the grill and oven functions at the same time.

Unlike built-in appliances, freestanding ovens are designed to fit into the space between two cupboard units. They are either fitted with brackets or are freestanding and come in a variety of widths depending on the capacity.

PICS TBA

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER• Capacity• Cleaning• Kitchen layout• Oven doors• Control settings

BUILT-IN DOUBLE As with built in single models, these need to be installed in an oven housing, although they boast a bigger capacity than their counterparts. They will require more space, but have either a separate smaller grill oven or two large oven cavities, making them ideal for people who are cooking big meals.

INDUCTION ELECTRIC GASInduction cooktops are the most expensive, using magnetic field-based heating rather than applying direct heat to the pan. Not only do induction models have the fastest cooking times, they are the most energy efficient and you can set your dishware anywhere across the entire surface.

The temperature on electric cooktops is slower to change, making on-the-fly cooking a bit more difficult. However, they are cheaper to install than their gas counterparts and they have no risk of gas leaks or open flames. Purchasing a model with a ceramic surface also makes cleaning easier than if you buy a traditional product with coil burners.

Many chefs prefer to use gas cooktops because the heat can be instantly modified when cooking. Food is also likely to cook quicker because the flames heat up the sides of pans as well as the bottom. This means they are often more energy-efficient to run, although they are pricier to get installed.

Cooktops come in a variety of types and sizes, giving you the flexibility to choose an appliance that matches with your kitchen decor. Cooktops have come a long way since the introduction of the traditional four-burner models, so The Good Guys are here to help you work out which cooktop is right for you.

TYPES OF COOKTOPSThere are three standard types of cooktop: gas, electric and induction.

COOKTOPS

APPLIANCES

UNDER CABINET HOODSAs the name suggests, these attach to the underside of a cabinet above your range.

ISLAND HOODSThese rangehoods hang from the ceiling over a cooktop island, meaning they need to connect to the exterior vent through ductwork in the ceiling.

DUCTLESS HOODSRemoves smoke and odours away from the cooktop, but doesn’t remove them from the kitchen – instead recirculates them.

CHIMNEY HOODSMounted to walls above the cooker, these models function with a flue that goes up the wall to the ceiling for ventilation.

DOWNDRAFT HOODSDowndraft rangehoods attempt to reverse rising smoke and exhaust fumes through ducts underneath the floor. They have the benefit that they can be used anywhere in the kitchen, but are less effective because they perform a more difficult function.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER• Size and space• Power settings• Useful extras

Check out the complete buying guide for your

new rangehood atbuyingguide.thegoodguys.com.au

While you may want your kitchen to be filled with the delicious aromas of the foods you’re cooking, you’ll still be producing lots of heat, moisture, grease and smoke. Not only will this damage your cabinets and walls over time, it’s not great for your health. Rangehoods provide ventilation and remove bad odours, replacing fumes with fresh air.

TYPES OF RANGEHOODSChoosing the right rangehood will depend on how your kitchen is set up. Here are several of the rangehood types available.

RANGEHOODS

SIDE-BY-SIDESide-by-side refrigerators provide freezer and fridge compartments that are adjacent to each other. Great for galley-style kitchens, they usually don’t need as much door clearance space (despite having greater capacity than top and bottom-mount fridges) and if you’re feeling flash they can come with a variety of gadgets such as TVs and ice makers. However, be prepared to pay out a little more than you would for top- and bottom-mount options, plus they tend not to be as energy efficient.

This fridge has been a mainstay in kitchens for decades and remains one of the most common designs. Fitted with a freezer compartment above the fridge that takes up around one-third of the size of the unit, this model is the most cost-effective, but still offers the functionality and shelf space required from a modern refrigerator.

TOP-MOUNT REFRIGERATOR

As the name suggests, this is similar to the top mount model – only in reverse. Here the fridge sits above the freezer compartment, meaning the most commonly used items tend to be at eye level.

BOTTOM-MOUNT REFRIGERATOR A combination of the side-by-side

and the bottom-mount fridge, this model is compartment heaven for any budding chefs out there. Two doors swing outwards, while the freezer is located underneath with either one or two drawers, depending on the product chosen. These fridges can store goods of all sizes, with wide shelves that can fit pizza boxes, lamb shanks and whatever else you want to keep cool.

A refrigerator may not strike you as one of the most glamorous additions to your home, but a fridge is an absolute necessity and these days they have lots of cool new features – so be prepared to do some research before you take the plunge on a new model.

SEMI INTEGRATEDPerfect for modern kitchens they are fitted with a door panel for a seamless look, so you only see the control panel.

Dishwashers can make the chore of washing your pots and pans a thing of the past, while also ensuring your kitchen doesn’t appear cluttered and untidy.

TYPES OF DISHWASHERSThe size of your dishwasher will be closely tied in with what type you end up buying. There are traditionally three options: Full Sized – 12 to 14 place settings, Slimline – 9 to 10 place settings, and Compact – 6 or less settings. Aside from size, there’s also choice regarding the style of dishwasher you want.

Many people want to buy the best coffee machine for their home, not only for the quality of the coffee, but also how the machine will look on their benchtop or integrated with their other appliances.

TYPES OF COFFEE MACHINES Selecting the type of coffee machine for your kitchen comes down to personal preference and how you like your coffee.

COFFEE MACHINES

Most models use a motor driven pump to force the exact amount of water needed through a thermos block, creating coffee to your specific taste. While they require slightly more work than an automated machine, you have a lot more control over the final product.

MANUALThese machines fit in perfectly with your other appliances for a sleek look and generally have a variety of settings to allow everyone their perfect cup of coffee.

INTEGRATED Often more expensive than manual models, as well as slightly noisier, they are the ultimate appliance for people who want quick coffee with little hassle.

AUTOMATEDPods or capsules are inserted into the machine, which then pierces the pod and forces hot water over the contents to create an espresso. Extremely fast and easy to use, although the capsules are slightly more expensive per cup than the equivalent in beans.

The right layout for you will depend on the size of your kitchen and household, as well as your personal preference.

When considering which kitchen layout option works best for your space you need to keep the work triangle in mind – this refers to how the three key kitchen zones work together – your food prep, cooking, and clean up areas – so you can work as efficiently as possible in your kitchen.

Once you’ve decided on your overall kitchen style, choosing the colour and style of your cabinetry will be much easier.

Think about how the colour and style of your cupboards and drawers will enhance the look and feel of your kitchen. Light coloured cabinetry makes small kitchens feel bigger, and dark cabinetry with a glossy finish adds bold kitchen drama.

All of The Good Guys doors and drawers are soft-closing and the cabinetry range represents the most popular Australian colours and the latest in global trends.

Once you’ve picked your doors, choosing handles for your cupboards and drawers is pretty simple.

Look for handles that match your style and overall kitchen design. A modern kitchen will suit sleek integrated handles like the Hestia or Marq, whereas a bar handle or cup style will be better for a traditional kitchen.

Also think about how easily you’ll be able to open doors and drawers, and how comfortable they’ll feel in your hand. Remember you’ll use them a lot!

Buying a washing machine is often one of the first items on the agenda when moving into a new home, but there are just as many people looking to update their existing model.

TOP LOADER OR FRONT LOADERAn important question to ask yourself is whether you want a top-loading or a front-loading washing machine.Top loaders come in two types:Agitator: Clothes are moved around by a central pole in the middle of the drum.Impeller: This whips up the water to move clothes using a propeller-like device at the bottom of the machine. With front loaders, clothes are piled in at the front and then jostled around by a spinning drum.

CONDENSER DRYERS No outside venting is needed, so they are more expensive than vented dryers and great for rental homes. Some models have a water container that needs to be manually emptied after each load, and some have a hose that drains the water automatically.

With the lowest prices they are the most affordable to buy but they generate a lot of warm, moist air so need a ducting vent installed to pump the hot air outside the house, or need to be in a well-ventilated room to prevent mould forming.

VENTED DRYERSSmart sensors save energy by detecting when clothes are dry then switching off, which also prevents over-drying damage to clothes. These need a ducting vent that pumps the hot, humid air outside the house, or to be in a well-ventilated room to prevent mould forming. Sensor dryers are more expensive to buy than timed vented dryers, but they cost up to 15% less to run for power bill savings.

SENSOR DRYERSThe most energy efficient type of dryer and requires no venting. Heat pump dryers don’t create hot air or moisture so they are perfect for apartments. They use less than half the energy of a vented or condenser dryer so the higher price is recouped on power bill savings over the dryer’s lifetime.

HEAT PUMP DRYERS

LAUNDRIES

Clothes dryers can significantly speed up the laundry process, meaning you don’t have to rely on good weather or plenty of hanging space.

HEAT PUMP, CONDENSER, VENTED OR SENSORDryers are one of the most expensive appliances to run so energy efficiency is extremely important. Look for the energy star ratings when comparing different models. More stars = more power bill savings! There are four different types of dryers:

DRYERSOTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER• Energy efficiency• Capacity and size• Dimensions• How long does

it take to dry?• Lint filter• Display and cycle
