Quaker February 2016 Term 1 Report Cards Home Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 On February 5, 2016 all students will bring home their “pay cheques” for first term! Students have been working hard, and the Term 1 Report Card will share with you what your child is doing well, and areas that they will need to focus on for continued growth and development. Learning Skills and Work Habits are an important focus of this report card. These are critical life skills that students will work on from Grades 1 to Grade 12. Teachers evaluate how well students are achiev- ing these skills for their grade level and include a comment about each student's strengths and some next steps for continued growth. The development of these skills is crucial to creating the conditions for future academic success for students and for developing those attributes that will help promote leadership, respon- sibility and positive relationships. For each subject being taught this term, your child will receive either a letter grade (Grades 1-6) or a per- centage grade (Grades 7 & 8). If a subject is only being taught in Term 2, then the teacher will check NA (not applicable) for that subject on the report card. For each subject, there will be a comment that de- scribes your child's strengths and some next steps that will support learning in Term 2. Communication between teachers and parents/guardians is an important support for student success. We encourage all parents/guardians to discuss the report card with your child. While interviews are not mandatory for all students, the teacher may request an interview to discuss some specific needs or next steps for your child. If you have any questions or comments for your child’s teacher, but an interview was not requested, you are invited to contact the school or teacher to schedule an opportunity to discuss your child's achievement and next steps for learning. Term 1 Report Cards Home Friday, Feb. 5, 2016

On February 5, 2016 all students will bring home their “pay cheques” for first term!

Students have been working hard, and the Term 1 Report Card will share with you

what your child is doing well, and areas that they will need to focus on for continued

growth and development.

Learning Skills and Work Habits are an important focus of this report card. These are critical life

skills that students will work on from Grades 1 to Grade 12. Teachers evaluate how well students are achiev-

ing these skills for their grade level and include a comment about each student's strengths and some next

steps for continued growth. The development of these skills is crucial to creating the conditions for future

academic success for students and for developing those attributes that will help promote leadership, respon-

sibility and positive relationships.

For each subject being taught this term, your child will receive either a letter grade (Grades 1-6) or a per-

centage grade (Grades 7 & 8). If a subject is only being taught in Term 2, then the teacher will check NA

(not applicable) for that subject on the report card. For each subject, there will be a comment that de-

scribes your child's strengths and some next steps that will support learning in Term 2.

Communication between teachers and parents/guardians is an important support for student success.

We encourage all parents/guardians to discuss the report card with your child. While interviews are not

mandatory for all students, the teacher may request an interview to discuss some specific needs or next

steps for your child. If you have any questions or comments for your child’s teacher, but an interview was

not requested, you are invited to contact the school or teacher to schedule an opportunity to discuss your

child's achievement and next steps for learning.

We are looking forward to a

great Term 2 here at Quaker !

CANADIAN ANIMALS

My name is Parker Koch and I am in Mrs. Shannon’s

grade 1/2 class. Our class did an animal research re-

port on a Canadian animal. I chose the porcupine.

Here are three interesting facts about porcupines:

1. porcupines hum and dance to get a girlfriend;

2. sometimes porcupines fall out of trees; and

3. porcupines give three warnings before they

quill a predator—clack their teeth, give off a

bad smell and make their quills stand up to

show a white stripe on their back.

If you have any questions come and get me out of Math

class. ;-)

come to the office to share their projects with him.

Mindful Parenting, Mindful Kids

Mindfulness involves being fully present and accepting of our moment-to-moment experiences, without be-

coming lost in thought about the past or future. Life as a parent is busy and as a result it’s easy to operate on

auto pilot. Being a mindful parent means taking the time to enjoy the everyday moments with your children. As

parents, mindfulness is especially important because it allows you to role model mindfulness practice, allow-

ing your entire family to reap the benefits.

Some examples of daily mindfulness activities you can do with your children include:

- Going for a walk and giving everyone the task of finding 5 things that they hear, see or feel touch during

the walk and reporting back to the family upon return

- Spending time unplugged and together as a family. Take turns sharing stories about your day and listen

to each with kind attention.

Practicing daily mindfulness activities prepares you to respond thoughtfully to situations rather than react to

them. For example, if your child is showing signs of anger, rather than reacting with discipline, take the time to

think about why they are upset. Connecting in this way, with compassion can help defuse the situation.

Dan Siegel, best-selling author of several parenting books, co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Re-

search Center and executive director of the Mindsight Institute, offers a wonderful description of what it means

to be a mindful parent in this short video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXxrJEnIboM

Being a more attentive, mindful parent can help you feel more confident and content within your family!

SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES

The future is NOW! It has been a great month get-ting to see all the learning that has taken place in our grade 7/8 Geography class. Students were tasked with designing their own communities that included examples of sustainable development and ways to promote an eco-friendly balance with na-ture. From maps and physical models to 3D cities constructed in Minecraft it has been a pleasure to witness the amazing ideas that have been present-ed by our students. Great work 7/8's!

Go-o-o-o-o Cougars!

On Thursday January 14 the grade 7/8’s went to Welland Centen-

nial Secondary School to watch the “Jr. Cougar Classic” where the

Centennial Cougars fought against the Beamsville Buccaneers in

an awesome basketball game. At half time the cougars had a free

throw competition and two people got to go up from each school.

The students who got to go up from our school was Abby D. in

grade 7 from Mr. Carnegie’s class and Nick U.

in grade 8 from Mr. Bootma’s class. They did

not win but they did a great job. I can’t wait till

next year to go back! Yay!

Grade 1’s Explore an Arithmetic Rack

Ms. Mackenzie (Brock Student-Teacher) and Ryder R. are explor-

ing the arithmetic rack and sharing strategies during a Math Con-

gress (sharing of strategies used by students). The grade ones in

Ms. Bernard's class are using arithmetic racks as a powerful

model and tool to act out a story and explore Number Sense. The

arithmetic rack is a calculating frame consisting of two rows of

ten beads with two sets of five in each row. The unit is designed

to encourage the development of cardinality the number you end

on is the number of objects in the set), one-to-one correspond-

ence (there is a corresponding object matched to each object in

the set and these sets are equal), hierarchical inclusion numbers

grow by one and exactly one (six includes five, plus one: five in-

cludes four. plus one etc.) and compensation and equivalence if

you lose one (from five, for example) but gain it (onto the three),

the totals stays the same.

DELICIOUS MATH LESSON

Stack it up!

Students from the grade 5/6 class collected data to calculate the mean, median and mode, for how high each student could stack Oreos . Each student found the following and it was agreed: the mean was 21, the median 22, the mode 24 and range was 16. After they evenly divided the Oreos. Yum!

As part of our Safe School Pro-

tocol, we ask you to report

your child’s absence or late promptly so we can

ensure their safety and identify where they are.

The answering machine is available 24/7, so

you are able to leave a message even after

hours. Students who are absent and we have

not received notification of their absence must

be located through phone calls to your home

or place of work taking valuable time.

Students who arrive at school late are expected

to report directly to the office where they can

be signed in and given a late slip.

At this time I would like to thank all those par-

ents and guardians who faithfully call the school

to report absences and lates. It is very much

appreciated!
