! January has now come and gone. 2014 has brought interesting weather for our area. The temperature has fluctuated from very cold to warm. Unfortunately, there have been more cold days than warm.

! Because of the cold weather, the district did not have school on Monday, January 6th. Although a majority of school districts in the state were not in session, the Governor will not be forgiving this day. The district will need to make this day up. School will be in session on Monday, February 17th.

! The district will have an early out on Friday, February 14th. This will be used for a professional development activity for our staff. Buses will leave Central School at 12:30, and 12:45 from the Middle School for their routes.

! The district has recently posted the School Board Policy Book to our school website. The policy book can be accessed under the Quick Links tab located on the right side of the school website. By clicking on the School Board Policy Book, you will be taken to a screen showing the categories of the School Board Policies. This will give patrons easy access to the school districts policies. I hope everyone will find this very useful.

! In November, the district mailed a survey to everyone who voted at the Special School Board Election on a school bond for a new PK-5 school. The results and comments are now available on the school website. I would encourage patrons to take the time to read through the comments and results. The response was tremendous. Out of the 1050 mailed surveys, the district received 606 responses. I would like to express my appreciation to everyone completing the survey. The school website is www.bottineau.k12.nd.us.

! On Wednesday, January 22, the Bottineau Public School Board met in a special meeting to discuss the future building project for the district. The board also had a special meeting on Wednesday January 15th. This meeting discussed the results of the survey and comments.

Page 2: February 2014 - Bottineau Public School

From the January 15th meeting, the board narrowed down the options to building east of town (voted on November 5) and placing all grades K-12 under one roof. The board set their next special meeting on January 22nd. The board discussed the pros and cons of each of the options. After much discussion, the board voted to move forward with the option bringing all grade levels under one roof at our current 3-12 building. At this time, the date of this special election has not been set. The district will be scheduling Public Forums in the future. Dates and times will be advertised.

! I would again remind everyone school will be session on Monday, February 17th due to the school not being in session on Monday, January 6th.

Notes from Mr. Palmer, Elementary Principal

As we embark on the second half of the school year, I want to take this opportunity to discuss the importance of school attendance. Some studies have indicated that excessive absenteeism in Kindergarten and/or first grade can substantially impact a child’s reading ability as well as other academic and social areas. With this being said, the school board will be setting the 2014-15 school year calendars within the next month of two. I ask parents to please obtain a copy of the calendar so that doctor’s appointments, family trips, etc. can be scheduled on days that school is not in session. I understand that this is not always possible, but every day we have your student in school is another day of knowledge that they will gain for the rest of their life.

Band Conducting Annual Magazine Sale The Instrumental Music Department is conducting their annual magazine sale. The students are selling new and renewing current magazine subscriptions to over 700 of the most popular magazines published today. In addition, they will also have CDs, DVDs, books, and computer software available. For every dollar sold, the band gets to keep 40 cents...making this a very important fund raiser for us. Not only do we make money for our program, many of these items are at great savings to you, and most are at the same price as the renewal notices that you get in the mail. We kicked off our campaign on January 20th. Please check all of your current subscriptions to see which ones you can renew with us. If you get a renewal notice in the mail, consider renewing with us instead – our prices are usually the same as your mailed renewal offer plus we are able to make 40% for the music department instead of giving it all to the magazine companies!!! Don’t forget to think about magazine subscriptions as gifts for people. We’ll even give you a gift card to present them! If you are not contacted but would like to help us out, call Nancy Olson at 228-2266 by February 12 and she will put a student in touch with you. Thank you for supporting the band!!

our annual Easter Butter Braid & Puffins Sale, our annual Cookie Dough Sale, and possibly a Jerky Sale that the parent of one of our students runs. We are also checking on dates to run an On-Line Schwan’s Frozen Food Sale to co-inside with the Lenten Season. Details for all projects will be sent home with you child as well as being posted on my Power School Lesson Plans. Lastly, I am waiting to hear if we will be able to work a night of concessions at the district boys’ basketball tournament. If we do, we will need workers, bars, possibly pies, and other things to provide more options for those attending the games and for us to make more money. Stay tuned! June 6-15 Band Tour!!! The concert band is gearing up for our tour to Florida this coming June. The students have been working hard on fundraising the cost of their trip and we are really excited to go! Band parents, please refer to the lavender sheet that I sent home with your child’s latest band tour statement. On it I have payment dates and amounts. Please plan ahead so we can make our payment obligations to the tour company. We still have room on the buses so if you would like to come with us, please let Mrs. Olson know by February 3. It will be a fun, memorable trip so you don’t want to miss it. In addition, you get to travel with some of the best kids around!!! !

28 Days to a Healthier HeartFebruary may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s enough time to achieve some bigimprovements in your heart health. Now is the perfect time to get started on a new, heart-healthy game plan. Think about making one small change each week to lower sodium, getactive, quit smoking, and control blood pressure to boost your heart health this month.

Halt the SaltMost American adults (and children too) are eating too much sodium. In fact, we are eatingabout 3,400 mg of sodium a day. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend reducingsodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day. Eating too much sodium increases your risk forhigh blood pressure, a major contributor to heart disease and stroke.

Week 1

Read Nutrition Facts Labels. Processed foods account for most of thesodium in our diet, not the salt shaker at home. When shopping at the grocery store, look forthe lowest sodium options of your favorite foods. You’ll be surprised to see how the amount ofsodium can vary in the same foods depending on the brand. http://www.cdc.gov/salt/pdfs/Sodium_Tip_Sheet.pdf [PDF-177K] (http://www.cdc.gov/salt/pdfs/Sodium_Tip_Sheet.pdf)

Week 2Eat more servings of fruits and vegetables a day to ward off heart disease. A dietrich in fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables can help lower sodium. If you’re not sure howmany servings you should be eating, visit the Fruit and Vegetable Calculator (http://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/everyone/fruitsvegetables/howmany.html) . Here you can calculate your fruit andvegetable recommendations based on your calorie needs for your age, sex, and activity level.

Week 3Eat out less, cook more at home. One restaurant meal can easily add up to more than aday’s worth of sodium. Try making some of your favorite dishes with lower sodium ingredientsat home. If a recipe calls for salt, use half the amount. You can also experiment with fresh herbslike cumin, basil, rosemary and cilantro to wake up your palette and enhance the taste of your

food. To get you started on some heart-healthy recipes, check out the DASH eating plan.http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/hbp/dash/index.htm (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/hbp/dash/index.htm) (http://www.cdc.gov/Other/disclaimer.html)

Week 4Eat less of the Saltiest Top 10 Foods. Knowing the foods that contribute the most sodiumin today’s diet can help you make wiser, healthier choices. Here are the common foods that canlead to sodium overload: bread and rolls, cold cuts and cured meats, pizza, poultry, soups, sandwiches, cheese, pasta dishes, meat dishes and snacks. http://www.cdc.gov/VitalSigns/Sodium/index.html (http://www.cdc.gov/VitalSigns/Sodium/index.html)

Get Moving

Regular physical activity is a must for having a healthy heart. Commit toexercising 5 times per week or 150 minutes per week. Schedule your workout days on yourcalendar and treat them like an important appointment you can’t miss. In addition to helpingyour heart, exercise will give you more energy and reduce stress.

Week 1Aim for 30 minutes. Moderate-intensity exercise for 2 hours and 30 minutes every week is agreat way to lower your risk of heart disease. You can even try breaking up your workout into10-minute intervals throughout your day. If you don’t want to go to the gym, try taking a briskwalk around your neighborhood or at your local mall to kick off your new fitness habit.

Week 2Build Muscle. Pumping iron can help your body’s most important muscle—your heart. Youcan begin slowly, increasing the weight and repetitions as you progress. Adding resistancetraining to your workout has other benefits too, including increased bone density, coordination, and keeping a healthy weight. Here’s a sample workout to get you started: http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/adults.html#Musclestrengthening (http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/adults.html#Musclestrengthening) .

Week 3Take a class. Try salsa dancing, yoga, Pilates, or kick-boxing to add variety to your fitnessroutine. It’s a great way to try something new and keep your body moving. Take a friend withyou and have fun exploring new activities.

Page 14: February 2014 - Bottineau Public School

Week 4Go High-tech. Try one of the many fitness apps available on your smart phone to help reachyour fitness goals. Think of it as a personal trainer in your phone ready 24/7 to give youtraining tips and motivation when you need it. Many of these apps are free and can log yourworkout progress.

Kick Butt

Tobacco is still the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S.More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. So now is the time to quitfor good.

Week 1Change your routine. Do things and go places where smoking isn’t allowed. Visit libraries, museums, or even a department store. If you try to be near non-smokers it will help in yourresolve to kick the habit.

Week 2Talk to your health care provider. Your doctor can help if you’re considering usingmedication to help you stop smoking. There are prescriptions and over-the-countermedications that can help reduce your cravings and withdrawal symptoms so you can focus onchanging the behavior and habits that trigger your urge to smoke.

Week 3Let others help Tell family, friends, and co-workers that you’re going to quit and you needtheir support. Sign up for individual, group, or telephone counseling. Studies have shown thatyou have a better chance of being successful if you have help. Free telephone counseling isavailable at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).

Week 4Don’t give up. Don’t let previous attempts to quit sabotage you now. Think about your pastattempts to quit—what worked and what didn’t. Keep trying to quit methods until you findwhat works for you. Find more resources to help here http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco(http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/) .

Lowering your blood pressure or maintaining normal blood pressure cangreatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Nearly 1 in 3 adults (about 67 million) hashigh blood pressure and more than half of them don’t have it under control.

Week 1Check it. It’s important to know your numbers and what they mean. A normal reading isunder 120 systolic (top number) and under 80 diastolic (bottom number). Track your bloodpressure and discuss your readings with your doctor, pharmacist or other health care provider.

Week 2Take prescribed medicines. Remember to take blood pressure medications daily andfollow the directions on the bottle. Use notes, pillboxes, and other reminders to take yourmedication.
